Specializing in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, a research-​based method for helping couples to go beyond their painful, stuck patterns and to establish bonds of deep affection and support. Research studies find that with this method, 70−75% of couples move from distress to recovery and approximately 90% show significant improvements.

In working with individuals, Mara draws from many psychological and wisdom traditions including psycho-​analytic, Jungian, dreams, movement, and art therapy.

Established in 1982.

Mara has had a private practice in Santa Cruz for over 40 years. In addition to her work as a psychotherapist with couples and individuals, she has also taught classes in meditation, «The Work» of Byron Katie, parenting teenagers, communication and counseling skills for bodywokers, transpersonal psychology, and acupressure therapy.

Mara brings warmth, compassion, and skill to her work with individuals and couples. Her graduate degree was from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, an innovative and ground-​breaking educational program which emphasized not only intellectual growth, but also physical, emotional, and spiritual growth. This education has shaped her life and her practice as a psychotherapist.
