Business Owner

Dr. Helena Nguyen started Optima Optometry nineteen years ago with a single purpose of providing the best eye health care to her patients under the same philosophy of her alma mater, Southern California College of Optometry.

Dr. Nguyen practices full scope optometry including comprehensive eye exam, expert contact lens fitting, diagnoses eye and systemic diseases thru the eyes, effective treatment of contact lens complications, licensed in CRT (Corneal Reshaping Therapy), comanage glaucoma, lasik surgery and cataract surgery.

Dr. Nguyen has worked at various optometry clinics, including Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic in Los Angeles, the Fort Ord Army Medical Center, the Allergan Research Clinic and the Optometric Centers in Los Angeles and Fullerton, California.

Dr. Nguyen is a member of the American Optometric Associations (AOA) and a TLC Affiliated Doctor.

I have been coming here for almost 8 years. Ive always come back for the great experiences I’ve had with the staff. But you were going to charge me 50% more than ive ever paid. I’m sorry to say but you lost a customer today.

Shout out to Dr. Tina Doan! I just saw her for the second time and she is just awesome! Dr. Doan is personable, patient and good at what she does. She’ll take the time to talk to you, listen and answer any questions or concerns you have. She is so sweet and I always feel comfortable.
All of the staff are also very friendly and helpful. If you wear contacts, order here tax-​free! I’ve been ordering from Costco for the past year thinking, «Well… it’s Costco. How could it get any better?!» It can. In addition, it seems like they have most prescriptions ready and in stock so no panic in waiting when you’re running low.

I’ve been wearing glasses for pretty much my entire life, and obviously have been to many opticians. This shop is by far the best of the dozens of other places I’ve been to! Good selection of frames, quick service, but the best part — very nice, courteous people! This was the most friendly experience I’ve had at an optometrist shop! I will most definitely come back here again, when the time comes to get a new pair of glasses.

Optima Optometry didn’t ask me to write a review for them but I wanted to since I had such a wonderful experience there today getting a pair of glasses.
The front desk girls were very friendly and nice. The guy who did the pre eye exam was very professional.
The best part was my time with Dr. Doan who was just very nice and personable. She even helped me fix the eye pads on my old glasses and gave me a free bottle of eye drops when I mentioned to her my dryness with the contacts.
The lady who explained to me about my coverage and what I can get with my coverage was focusing on my benefit rather than on their profit. The front desk girls even helped me decide which pair of glasses looked good on me since I don’t have much sense of fashion.
They’ve all gone above and beyond my expectations!
So if you’re looking for personable eye care experience, look no further and this is the place… at least when this team is around in the office.

Super nice front desk ladies! Didn’t get any eyecare here. Just dropped in because I was looking for screws for my cheapo sunglasses and couldn’t find them anywhere! They had me sign a waiver and then did their thang. 5 minutes later I had my glasses with screws. courtesy of optima! Awesome. I should say if the front desk is nice enough to do that for me, it should reflect the rest of the business. Thank you Optima :)

Only went here because I did not have a car at the time and it was within walking distance. After the fact would have rather walked around blind until I had my car fixed.
Extremely overpriced though that was expected, the main problem was that they refused to give me a copy of my prescription so that I could go elsewhere — so that was $ 129 in the toilet. Charged me just under $ 400 for what Costco could give me for $ 150. Woman behind counter where you place your order — not the optometrist — talked to me like a child and a fool, telling me it would be «easier just to leave my prescription with them». Realized the only way they were going to give me a copy of my prescription was if I made a scene so I quietly left and later filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.
Avoid this place like the plague.

I have been a patient of Dr. Nguyen’s for many years. Having been a long time soft contact lens user, my eyes developed vascularization due to the lack of oxygen reaching my eyes. Past optometrists continued to prescribe the same contact lens brand I used previously, which did not improve nor alleviate my condition.
When I found Dr. Nguyen, she was concerned about the vascularization and had me switch to another brand of contacts, which allowed more oxygen to pass through. It took a few days for my eyes to become comfortable with the new lenses, but the vascularization improved to the point of being difficult to detect.
I am also so appreciative of how her team takes care of me. I had taken a bad fall during a hike and completely tweaked my prescription glasses. When I dropped in, Dr. Nguyen’s husband immediately recognized me and sat me down to take a look at my frame, which could hardly be worn at this point. He adjusted my frame, and I was so happy with how much better they felt!
I happily recommend Dr. Nguyen and her team!

1 Star for the Dr Helena — She is very nice dr., her voice was soft and explained to me very detail throughout the exam.
The receptionist girls weren’t very friendly or rude, just BLAH…
I only found out the negative experiences when i picked up my eyeglass.
***NEGATIVE– for the consultant eyeglass*** They quote you one thing and charge something else and it was not very cleared of what you are getting. Keep in mind, your customer doesn’t know the medical term «ITS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO EXPLAIN TO CUSTOMER». Once you get the glass, it wasn’t full of what you wanted; then they only wanted to charge $$$ more and didn’t agree to their fault but fight back with the customer. HORRIBLE
Also, its clearly that my insurance card show $ 0 copay for eye exam; but the consultant was saying that my insurance only covered $ 60; and their eye exam costs $ 120; they would have charged me for the difference, but no they waived. WHAT A B.S. «PLEASE READ CAREFULLY ON MY INSURANCE CARD — $ 0 COPAY FOR EYE EXAM». I dared you to charge me for the difference. I would have disputed these charges with my insurance.
Secondly, the dr.‘s HUSBAND, such an annoying guy and doesn’t know how to treat a customer nicely. YOU should have ask your employee of what they did to customer before confront the customer. FIRST RULE of CUSTOMER SERVICE.
SHOULD HAVE BELIEVED Unilocal VIEWERS – the negative review was truth at least to me for now.

Last time I visited an optometrist was 2 years ago in San Diego. Before that, it was 2000. Fourteen years later, I decided to come back to Optima Optometry. Surprisingly, they still had all my records on file from when I was a little 10 year old.
After my eye turning red and not getting better for 2 weeks, I scheduled an appointment and paid them a visit. Janine at the front desk made everything seamless. Quick appointment scheduling, a few questions regarding my eye history, and I was set. She is very friendly, efficient, and professional.
Dr. Doan started off by doing all the necessary tests to make sure my eyes were in good condition. Then the typical letter reading, lens choosing, etc. Eventually, she determined that it was an inflammation of the outer layer of my eye, but everything else was fine. She prescribed Naphcon, which alleviated the problem within 2 weeks, but only after I stopped taking it. Strange, but it worked! Very knowledgeable, professional, and caring. She even checked up with me 2 weeks after the appointment to make sure everything is ok. That’s rare to come by these days.

They just want your money. I used to go when I had medical and once they didnt get much from the state they denied seeing my children. Eyetopia down the road at san tomas is much nicer, professional and down to earth.

The good — Dr. Helena gave me a thorough examination and answered all my questions. She informed me that I had high blood pressure and showed me the pictures of my retina and the blood vessels. Sure enough I was later diagnosed with VERY high blood pressure. She may have saved my life! I’ve had many many eye exams over my 60 years and NONE were as complete as Dr. Helena’s. The service is very professional and courteous.
The bad — Prices are waaaaay high, in orbit, out of sight! Ouch! They have lots of designer frames with crazy high prices. $ 900 for just the frames?
The ugly — THEY WILL NOT PUT YOUR LENSES IN A NEW FRAME, EVEN IF YOU BOUGHT THE LENSES FROM THEM!
I broke my frame and need a new one, but when I called they told me they would not put my lenses in a new frame. I guess it is not worth their time to do it. One must buy the lenses and frame from them. What the heck kind of policy is that?
The glasses I’ve gotten here are very good and the script was spot on, but I did have to buy a new set of lenses with a script that had changed very little. Grrrrrr. When I pick up the new pair, I will get a copy of the script so I can get another shop to replace the frames if and when needed.

Both doctors, are extremely nice and know how to talk to patients. The eye exam was just not about a check up but I also learned a lot from it too! I would recommend anybody to go here because everything seems to be great. Some people might be iffy on the pricing but think about it in a way of «You get what you pay for.»

I would say the technicians are helpful and that’s about it. I give them 1 star for that.
Everything is way overpriced here, nothing is marked up reasonably. It’s all ridiculously priced, but that’s not the main problem.
I was told this is the only one in my area that still did the lenses for the Oakley sunglasses. So I went here to get some lenses made for my sunglasses. My vision isn’t that bad either, it’s less than a 1.0.
The lenses came back and the the focal point was way off. They told me try it, but I scanned the glasses and moved them until my eyes didn’t hurt anymore. I found the spot. They were helpful enough to redo it at least.
A few weeks later, again I received the sunglasses, the left eye was fixed, but the right eye was still way off. The focal point was off again. At this point, they didn’t offer to fix it anymore. They said no matter, how many times they tried, it was not going to get any better because my eyes were the problem and not the lenses. What a load a BS that was…
The reason they didn’t get it right because the lab that makes their lenses isn’t the real authentic Oakley lab. I paid over $ 140 just for the lenses too and I can’t even use them.
How do I know they were lying? Because I actually went to another place that agreed to send it to the lab that actually makes the lenses for Oakley. After a few weeks, lo and behold!!! They frames came back and they were perfect! The lenses fit perfectly and it didn’t pop out like when Optima sent it out.
Everything could’ve been avoided if they didn’t cheap out and send it to the right lab in the first place. I don’t understand the reason for all the excuses they gave me. Actually, it’s just the older gentlemen who’s the owner. I totally agree with don and his previous review years ago. Seems like nothing has changed over the years.

I don’t even want to give them 1 Star! I wouldn’t recommend this office if they were the last optometrist around!
I called on 3 different occasions to see if there was anyway they could help me… my mother who isn’t well and in the hospital had broken her frames and told me this is where she goes to get her prescription filled. When I called they told me they could create a new pair of glasses with her prescription and they couldn’t just put her lenses into new frames. They said she had to come in and have a check-​up and get a new prescription. Because she is in the hospital, that is not an option at this time. My third phone call to this office, I left a message pleading for the manager to consider my dilemma. The manager never called me back! It would have taken a simple call back to let me know it’s not possible to create a new pair of glasses for her or put her lenses in new frames, but they obviously don’t pride themselves on customer service here.
I took the lenses to Berryessa Optometry and they ordered new frames and put the lenses in within 2 days with great customer service!

They have a pretty big array of glasses/​sunglasses here. Also, most of the front desk/​pretesting girls are awesome, especially Caroline T. She is super nice, helpful and easy on the eyes. They are taking their Chanel line off the floor because Chanel will only allow them in boutique stores; so hurry over and get your Chanels before they’re taken away!

I just moved into the area about a year ago, and was running out of contact lenses, so I looked up an optometrist office from my insurance’s listing and found this place.
Everyone here is very friendly, and Dr. Yili Young is very down-​to-​earth and knowledgeable. She took the time to do a thorough exam and answer all my questions. I had a great experience here and for once, going to an optometrist office is not a dread anymore. Looking forward to my follow-​up in 2 weeks.

After deciding that I should switch optometrists due to the fact that the one that I go to (which was super close to my office) didn’t offer a broad enough selection of glasses that I’m looking for. I mean, yes, you can order some from the catalog that they have in the office, but still, I want to see how they look on me right then. I don’t want to have to come back in again just to try them on…
With that being said, I called around to a few spots to find a particular frame that I was looking for. And this was the third place I called. They had the one I was looking for as well as a bunch of other nice frames just in case those didn’t work out.
The place isn’t exactly close to home, but it’s not that far of a drive. The people are all very nice and the doctors here are chill.

I’m writing a review on Dr. Yili Young.
A very excellent and compete experience. As an optometrist, Dr. Young is friendly, very knowledgeable, talks in laymen’s terms, and answered any questions I had completely. My feeling was that looking out for the patient is her number one priority and I appreciate that a lot. Will continue to see her for yearly check-​ups.
