Dougherty Valley High School

Administration here is HORRIBLE. They care more about reputation/​image/​money above their own students. No wonder the principals change here about every 2 years. Administration is also very discriminatory as well as rude.
Case in point: they charge over $ 40 extra each for AP tests ($ 125 per AP test) and say that they don’t make any money off of it. However, they make an INCREDIBLE amount of money off AP tests (profiting off students), and I think that is absolutely despicable. I confronted them to release their financial information about AP tests my senior year, and they refused. They also wouldn’t refund me for 6 AP tests that I would not get credit for (~$ 800).
Cafeteria food quality is also despicable. Don’t know how they can serve the food that they do here. Lines are also incredibly long — by the time you get your food, lunch is almost over.
Teachers here have also not gotten a raise in TEN years, while other teachers in other school districts nearby get a 4% annual salary increase.
The only thing good here are the teachers, and they aren’t even respected here. Some of the most lovely human beings teach at this school, yet they are well under-​compensated for their hard work.

awfully SMALL campus, students are forced into tiny halls and classrooms, multiple teachers share a single classroom, inadequate one-​on-​one time, most students rely on themselves rather than the teachers to get things done. administration is unprofessional and discriminatory. campus security is strict on the kids and punishes them if they do not follow the complicated sign in/​out procedures but I’ve seen plenty of people (adults) walk into campus without being questioned. There are also many (4+) large back doors and fences unlocked during school hours. They don’t provide enough food, many students starve because the lines are too long = food sells OUT within 20 minutes. Parking lot exists are often blocked on purpose by admins, expect to take 45 min to pick up your kid from school. DV academics only seem «good» because 90% of students are asians who spend lots of money and time to study outside of classes. as a college kid, I am prohibited from visiting the campus at ALL, but either way I’m never going back.

I came here for the traditional Dougherty Valley High School/​Dublin High school football game. The hospitality here was stinky! Taunting, teasing, rude… not your typical experience for a football game. And the rudeness came from all levels: students, teachers, those aiding with the football game. Very poor hospitality, indeed!
For instance, towards the end of the game many of needed the restroom. The response? «Go out a different gate, sir, we need the restrooms for Dougherty Valley only!»
Ah, rudeness has reached new levels!

My four year experience:
Environment:
–some teachers have a certain bias/​favoritism towards students. it makes you extremely uncomfortable in a classroom setting.
–The front office staff are really rude, and unprofessional.
–It’s hard to do well when the students are extremely competitive, and many students as well as myself suffered from this.
–students who like it here… are the ones that do well in a competitive setting and can handle the environment with no problem
Teachers
–English department is great, willing to help you after school, at lunch, etc
–History teachers also have some great teachers, but only one of them truly helps their students after school, lunch. Some of the teachers in this department are too «busy» to help their students during lunch/​after school. *fail to meet students needs*
–science department– great AP Chemistry teachers, always willing to help you and go out of their way to help you after school or lunch. Other teachers should learn from this and be open to answer questions.
–Math– the best teacher in this department is the AP calculus teacher. Other teachers should constantly review the material and be able to solve each problem that is asked of them… some fail to solve some problems. The Math department needs to hire better teachers and replace the ones that fail to teach! Math is extremely important!!!
–AP Teachers– are really awesome. No further explanation needed.
–language department– some teachers… need to control their temper in the classroom, especially the Spanish department. However, there are really good French, korean teachers.
Students
–extremely competitive
–doesn’t really help each other… in order to be the top student
–many are extremely friendly and easy to get along with
Just to warn you, it will be hard to do well here and stand out because there are a lot of amazing smart individuals. and if you cant take this kind of competitive environment or handle the huge stress. don’t come here. The four years is pretty gruesome and stressful.
Overall, there are very few teachers willing to help. Students should be taught not to compare one another with their grades, and teachers should help each individual in a classroom and to teach without bias. Students need feel comfortable in a classroom, and teachers should try their best to make sure each student is emotionally/​mentally well.

The school is in Danville and the grounds are better than some college campus. Not bad for a public school.

Lost a star. Teachers don’t respond to student/​parent email and when pressed by administration, still do not. Unprofessional conduct. I cannot go into details as I’ve retained my lawyer to get involved. Poor show, that’s all I can say right now.

Don’t send your kids to this school. The staff doesn’t care about student success, and cares about how good their school looks. There’s a reason this school changes principals every year (total of 5 different principals now).
Oh and if you have a child who has trouble in school, this is the last place to send them. Only send your kids here if they can get by highschool with very little help and support.
I’ve seen better schools in Oakland (the bad parts).

Ok. You have to come here to see this place. It looks like a Jr. College campus. Very nice facilities, with the main administration and classrooms lined up next to each other, the sports fields located in the rear of the school. The football and baseball fields, swimming venue are just awesome and first-​rate. The best facilities of all high schools I have seen. Nice views of Mt. Diablo. Everything is brand new and state-​of-​the-​art in this school. Huge student parking lot, which was empty during the first inaugural year as there were no seniors. The district was smart in having sophomores and freshman in the first year, so those students got to spend at least three years here. The administration staff works hard to establish new traditions and standards for the students at DVHS. The envy of all the other HS in the Bay Area.
