My main foundation is nonviolent communication, a system created by Marshall Rosenberg that focuses on the fundamental needs we all share as human beings. In NVC, we believe that all actions come out of a need that is either met or unmet. This is a practice that builds empathy and self-empathy as a means of healing, and it is extremely powerful.
Aside from counseling, I also use NVC as a tool for conflict mediation. My mediations focus on making sure that both parties feel heard and understood before trying to come to creative agreements together. If you’re having an internal conflict, we can use the same strategies to work on coming to an understanding within yourself, and ultimately more peace.
NVC has changed my life so extensively that I really want to see it spread further into the world. The healing power of this practice is enormous! My goal is to see this practice taught in middle schools and high schools so that our kids learn better communication techniques at an early age. Additionally, I volunteer at San Quentin State Prison teaching this practice to inmates. I have seen and heard some amazing things, and I can’t wait to share them.
