History

Established in 1973.

More than 40 years ago, a Swedish couple living in Marin opened Clogs Unlimited, and it has been serving the Bay Area providing the finest selection of clogs ever since. Most recently, in 2008, after retiring from teaching, Jennifer Z. took over and has since worked tirelessly to improve, update, and refresh the store. For a shoe store with so much history, that is no small feat.

Meet the Manager

Andy Z.

Manager

My mother bought the store in 2008, and soon after, I hopped on board as manager. Since then, it’s been a whirlwind, and certainly a learning experience. There are many influences on my decisions for the store, ranging from living in Germany when I was young to my time spent in fashion school, and even my retail experience with GAP. I am dedicated to this established San Rafael shoe store, as is my mother, and together we aim to make it better than it has ever been.

I bought a pair of clogs in 2007, I returned them unused & in the original box. The person Shevaun only gave me a paper written with Shevaun Store Credit, so they kept the shoes & my $127.74 dollars. I hope they go bankruptcy cause they like the skills to be in business by deciding to keep their unsatisfy clients money.

I recently came here to purchase a pair of Danskos (the brand of clog I was most familiar with). As I looked around the shop I also decided to try on a pair of wood sole clogs as well for a comparison (I have worn clogs for work for around 15 years). After trying on the wood soles… I knew j would never go back to Dansko or anything else like it.
For me, they are much more comfortable and I like the idea of having something more natural as a shoe.
I ended up buying 2 pairs and I know I will be back for more!

Wow, lots of haters and spoiled online shoppers in this patch of reviewers… I have purchased shoes from this store and am a zappos shopper as well but when I need clogs I really prefer to support this local business. I think everyone needs to take a deep breath and think about why this store has such a strict returns policy (which I believe is posted somewhere near the cash register, if I’m remembering correctly). Clogs Unlimited is a small, local shop and they are doing their best to stay in business and we, the public, are all too snookered by the deluxe «customer service» policies of colossal big box stores (zappos included) that only push us to make more purchases than we need or can afford because «we can just take it back». I’m old enough to remember when returning something to a store was rarely allowed and you had to make a good, solid purchasing decision when you shopped. There’s nothing wrong with this business being allowed to have their own policies. They have a great selection and their discount section often has some great buys.

So, if you buy anything from this store Do not ever assume you can exchange your clogs a week later, unworn, in the original box with the labels, etc. because everything was marked down by a hefty 10% off. Now you can’t return or even exchange your purchase. I was happy to leave all my money behind-maybe more if the replacement clogs were more expensive. Nobody would be disappointed. But No. Policy is policy.
Nice selection, knowledgeable shop owner-but once you leave its bye bye.
Now this is just bad business. I was happy to patronize a small, local business, but frankly Zappos and 6pm have great service, a large selection-prices are about the same. Here is an idea, try them on at the Clog store-but order them ONLINE. Isn’t that sad?

This was the absolute worst experience I have ever had in a store!
I went in on Friday, August 14^th, 2015 to inquire about my options regarding a pair of Dansko clogs, I purchased there, whose staples were coming out. I assumed that a refund or store credit was out of the question, considering I purchased the shoes more than a year prior. My reason for going into Clogs Unlimited was merely to ask for help with how to reach the manufacturer regarding their warranty and/or faulty product.
I clearly and kindly explained as much to the employee. She then immediately accused me of being aggressive, and walked away form our conversation as we were still speaking. When she returned I explained that I wasn’t asking her to do anything for me except help figure out the next step since I believed the product, which had only been worn twice, was falling apart,
That is when this woman lost it. Her chin started to quiver, her eyes got misty and she started talking ca-ray-zay! She said we (me, my husband and two-year-old) were «very defensive» «aggressive» and «rude». When in reality, she had just described herself.
Long story short, turns out, she is the owner, Jennifer Laenglen. I told her that I was really and truly sorry that she was having such an intense reaction to an inquiry regarding a return, but that her behavior was appalling and incredibly disrespectful.
If you are bored, and want a transformative experience; buy a pair of clogs there, get stoned and then try to return them.

I have never written a bad Unilocal review on my life, until today. I bought 5 pairs of slippers here in December for family gifts — about $ 400 in all. They all worked but one, which I attempted to return today. I was met with the news that «their policy» (an oft-repeated word the owner doesn’t seem to know almost always signals poor customer service) was credit only. I live 40 minutes away, the only shoes I needed were not available in my size, and asked her to make an exception. There was another couple in the store who also had wanted to make a return and she told me that she said no to him so she had to say no to me. Accused me of expecting special treatment for asking for the return. When both I and the other customer pointed out we both would prefer to support a local store than shop online, and that her «policy» was an incentive to do just that, she mounted an ever-louder and more shrill defense about how unreasonable it was to expect a return. I said it wasn’t a very relationship-based /human approach and her response (in a super nasty tone) was «it is absolutely human because our policy is to treat all customers the same no matter what and you are asking for special treatment». I said I wouldn’t be back and she said «good, please don’t». Ouch. Defensive, rude, aggressive and nasty. Zappos, here I come. :-(

We made a special detour on our way to the bay area to visit this store. I had been debating ordering a pair of the SVEN clogs for almost a year, but wasn’t sure about the size/fit/quality. I looked up where to buy them in Northern California and Clogs Unlimited was the only place anywhere nearby. The sales woman (possibly the owner?) was extremely friendly and helpful. I told her I wore a size 7.5−8 and she brought out a pair that fit perfect! I’m so glad I stopped in to try a pair of these on because they seem to run small and I definitely would have ordered the wrong size if sight unseen. This store had so many other clogs and birkenstocks that I liked. I will definitely be back for more!

They have clogs that have designs painted on them by a local artist that I love as well as the traditional clogs. I am a fan of this store and it is nice to shop local.

The store looks like a great place to shop. The location is central, parking is adequate, yet service was lacking. 100% lacking. I walked into the store yesterday to purchase sandals and the salesperson was on the phone the entire duration of my visit. He was contesting a speeding ticket and didn’t even acknowledge us. We left and he didn’t acknowledge that either.

This store is absolutely the reason why people shop and large retailers and online. I’m a professional chef and I’m on my feet all day, so I require a good shoe. I always wear Sanitas but this time I decided to try out the wooden Troentorps. They immediately started to fall apart and made my feet ache. Unacceptable for a 130 $ pair of shoes. Sure. Fine. That’s the manufacturers fault, not the stores. I generally try to support small local businesses as much as possible, but now we can add Clogs Unlimited to the boycott list. I brought the shoes back to see what could get resolved and the lady took my shoes and my phone number. 5 days later, no phone call. Nothing. Great. So now they have my shoes AND my money. So I went in to find out where we were at with the shoes and all I got was passive aggressive attitude from the gentleman behind the counter. So I basically could have just taken my money and thrown it in the trash. I was going to buy another pair of my usual clogs, but after the attitude and unwillingness to create a satisfied customer I told the gentleman that I won’t be buying my shoes there from here on out. «I’m good with that» the little passive-aggressive hipster tells me. So great job on the crappy customer service Clogs Unlimited. Another sale for

I’ve been shopping for kitchen clogs for 3 months now and took the chance to walk into this place to check things out. I’m unfamiliar with Marin County but decided to venture outside of my SF city limits and found this store to be a refreshing change for a retail shopping experience. I hate shopping and Jennifer took great care of me. I can’t recall when I last experienced the kind of friendly yet professional attention I received while shopping. Give them a chance. Convenient location in San Rafael and knowledgeable about all things clogs, especially maintenance and care for my small but important investment for my passion for baking! Thank you Clogs Unlimited! I bought a pair of Toentorp clogs here about 3 weeks ago. I came in unfamiliar to the experience of wearing a European style wood clog like Troentorp. I walked around the store for about half an hour asking questions and walking around in them and being reassured buy the sales person that it would take a while to get used to wearing wood clogs. After 3 weeks of wear they were killing my feet. I mean I had bruises to the touch on the pads on my feet. I called the store to try to get store credit for the shoes and not only did she only offer me at cost store credit for 50 $(keep in mind I paid 170 for the shoes) but she was argumentative and unwilling to exchange the shoes due to return policy of like 10 days or something. The sales person told me it would take some time to get used to within 3 weeks I had enough and was tired of having bruised feet. after 3 weeks. Not a good experience and I would not recommend shopping here. The shoes are made well but expensive and the return policy does not stand by there products.

This store is awful. The return policy is no returns or exchanges. Owner is very rude. Get your clogs online or at nordstroms. I bought 2 pairs of clogs and one was too wide. I had not worn them and they were in the original box. The owner would not let me exchange them and became defensive and rude when i was curious as to why that policy would benefit the store. I did not ask for a refund just an exchange for something that fit better. She would not exchange them and i left.

This response from the store manager again illustrates poor customer service. I was not made aware by any obvious signs nor verbally told that the shoes I was buying were non-returnable. Your website makes no mention of this return/exchange policy either. I suggest that for the future, you revise your policies in order to retain customers and remain competitive in your market. After all, it is very easy to buy the same shoes elsewhere online, or at larger local retailers for less, and return/exchange with no trouble if something does not fit.

There are not just the ubiquitous Dansko clogs on offer here, but also lovely Scandinavian brands I hadn’t heard of until popping into the store a few days back.
After moving abroad, and, finally, doing in an old pair of work clogs (Dansko), I realised the hard way that finding a suitable replacement pair would be tough. Dansko isn’t sold outside of No. America, and, unfortunately, I haven’t had much luck in finding a clog store in LDN. Admittedly, I haven’t been searching *that* hard, but, knowing I’d be going home this year for a visit, I thought I’d hold out for a bit clog shopping in CA.
This shop is mostly clogs with a hint of Birkenstocks and Blundstone’s thrown into the mix. Even though there were a plethora of clog colours and styles, I went with the old stand by: shiny black with heel support. Instead of Dansko, I opted for Troentorp, a Swedish brand of wooden-bottomed clogs. To quote Leo R.: these clogs are ‘like tanks-sturdy, not girly’ and that’s just what the doctor ordered! (–sorta wished that I fit the steel-toed variety…)
Clog stores are going the way of the dinosaur, if they ever even were that plentiful, so to have Clogs Unlimited in Marin is a real treat.

I’ve purchased shoes here in the past, and I am all in favor of supporting local business; however, back in Feb 2011 I had a very bad experience and I need to share. 1. Beware right away that you cannot return shoes here; they only give credit to buy another pair. 2. I was trying to use my credit but they only had a few of the boots I wanted coming in. 3. I was on the list to recieve a pair when they came in. 4. Andrew called me to tell me the pair was in; I was on the freeway half way home and said, Hold those boots! 5. When I got there he had just sold them to another customer. 6. He said he was sorry, he thought there was one other pair.
So, after that I tried to find some other boot to fit, but there was nothing and they said no more boots from that company were coming. So, I was stuck wihout a pair of boots (they do have a limited selection); so I asked for a favor, could he refund my credit card. Andrew then told me his mother said we could not do that, but that they would give me an additional 10% off. His mommy, give me a break. I told him I was so unsatisfied and he didn’t mind that I’m now stuck with a credit for boots and they don’t carry boots until next year. Wow, so I said I was no longer going to be a customer. Andrew said nothing. This is the kind of customer service I don’t need.

I’m a suit and tie guy. However, I needed to get some clogs and thought that I would give this place a try, and I am very glad that I did. The people at the store have been extremely nice and patient with me as I asked a lot of questions and really took up a lot of their time… this was three years ago. I have purchased a few pairs of clogs from them since that day and I’m heading there this week to buy another pair. I live in Contra Costa County now and have yet to find a store close to home with the same knowledge about clogs and Birkenstocks.
I dig this place and will support them as long as they’re around.

I’ve been shopping at Clogs Unlimited since we moved to California in 1982.
I suppose that sums it up. There are reasons you go back to the same place time and again, which are fairly universal. Great service. Great selection. Reasonable prices.
And I simply love that they’ll let me try on every pair in my size they have until I find the perfect right and left shoe. In a hard-soled clog, this is a Precious gift.
Don’t look back out toward the front window — all of those shoes are on sale. Just when you thought you were done shopping … ;)

This store is GREAT. First, I prefer to shop locally. and secondly, as much as I love shopping online, it is nice to touch and feel, and slide my foot into a the actual shoe to try it out.
Service is great. They were extremely busy when I was in, but I still received great service — when a size was not available, he brought out a smaller and a larger size, and a similar style — very «Nordstrom-y»!
Turned out a pair of shoes I loved was not available in my size, I called a few days later, they were very gracious about ordering my size from the manufacturer… wonderful!
Prices are lower than I could find online, service is great, brand/style selection is great, a little limited on size availability, but willing to special order product for you, if available. Plenty of parking, albeit metered
If you love clogs, or stylish comfy shoes, you must go by Clogs Unlimited.
