History

Established in 2001.

Outspoken started as a coffee shop and smoothie bar but has since grown into a great place for lunch. It is evolving into a full service café after being taken over in January 2010 by Chef Victoria Metzgar. We still have all the great smoothies and the infamous «Diva’s» a low calorie and scrumptious blended drink.

We offer morning coffee/​juice/​pastry service that can be altered to meet your needs. A great way to say thank you to friends and business associates.

Catering for your luncheon, dinner party, cocktail party or any event is now also available by Chef Victoria

Chef Victoria has a long history working as a vegetarian chef at world famous Greens Restaurant in San Francisco. This has enhanced her belief that using local, fresh ingredients you can make a healthy and delicious meal that is satisfying not just to the palette but to the stomach as well.

Outspoken compost’s all their waste through Cal Poly. Give back to the earth and it shall give back to you.

I love outspoken!!! The lady who owns the place is so friendly, I’ve been there so many times before school that I walk in the door and she knows my order. Being such a small place, it’s easy to make yourself comfortable and service is quick and efficient.

I was super excited for this place because of the good Unilocal reviews, but I was pretty dissapointed with the coffee quality. I got the iced vanilla latte and it was super watered down. There was way too much flavoring and it tasted really artificial. I would not recommend this place if you like good coffee.

Super friendly and patient staff. It’s really cute and cozy here, they offer smoothies, blended drinks, coffee, espresso and tea. There is a small selection of food as well– salads, pastries and soup. This is the perfect stop on a rainy day. I ordered the strawberry angel smoothie… it was very tasty. Love it.

Two words: Almond. Milk. And not just cold almond milk that you can pour into your coffee… Every hot/​cold espresso beverage can be made with almond milk. Every. Single. One. I am in heaven right now as I sip my frothy vanilla latte that tastes like it was made by Santa’s magical elves.
Also, the food is awesome so far… My new favorite in SLO.

The coffee at Outspoken is some of my all time favorite! Especially if I buy the illy espresso (reminds me if Italy). The owner is the sweetest woman who succeeds at making everyone feel welcome, especially because she is amazing at remembering names! I used to go I weekly with my girlfriends and one of their dogs; it was easily that one morning I constantly looked forward to. Love love love Outspoken!

The staff and owner, Victoria are so welcoming, we keep coming back! Try the Fritata if you are watching carbs, it’s a treat. Peaceful, comfortable outdoor spaces to relax in. The coffee is great too!

Good quality coffee and bagels, but excessive wait. It took over 20 minutes to get my coffee and bagel from the time ai ordered it!!! 25 minutes total. What blew my lid off was how some owner-​looking guy came in and instead of helping his staff, fixed himself some tea!!! It wasn’t even busy but they were in the weeds! If not for the high quality of the food, it would be 1 star.

I wrote a review (now curiously missing) of Outspoken in December 2013, with a picture (also curiously missing) showing their ever-​fluctuating hours during the holidays. They posted their homemade new business hours sign on the door, and then changed the hours on a whim (stuck a little piece of paper over the previously posted hours). I tried three times to check out Outspoken, interested in this chai they serve. After three times of «Tricked you! We’re not open again!» — I’m over it. This made it impossible to arrive when they were open, since they were closed more than open!

One star for their coffee beverages. I have tried several espresso drinks and the milk is so hot that all the natural sugar has been scorched. When the boss is away the drip coffee is weak and full of grounds. Yes, grounds are possible in all drip coffees, but there should not be so many in one cup of coffee.
I love small business, but if I could combine the previous owners understanding of espresso drinks with the new owners mastery of food this place would be great. I don’t want to go to Starbucks; however, they do have a temp they top out at before it becomes dangerous.

As others have noted, the chai goddess is the best chai drink I’ve ever had. The orange carrot smoothie — the «beta blast» was also tasty in a healthy way. Both iced drinks were cold and blended all the way through with an amazing texture and consistency — much better than say something like Jamba Juice. I love the ma and pa non-​corporate atmosphere. Greeted with a smile. Drinks are $ 4 – 5 each, one size.

As an avid coffee shop goer, I feel qualified to say that Outspoken is among the very best in SLO. Victoria, the chef, is one of the kindest souls I have ever encountered and always makes me feel valued and cared for. I had only been in twice or three times before she learned my name and she always makes genuine conversation when she sees me. Knowing I would be in today, she saved me one of her delectable soyriso breakfast burritos behind the counter. The food and drinks are relatively inexpensive and delicious and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. I look forward to my afternoons there and highly recommend it.

One of my favorite places to just get an amazing cup of brewed coffee. I like well flavored coffees and they always have something I will enjoy. My personal favorites are the Carmel & Hazelnut. Make sure you have some cash or your check book, they unfortunately do not accept credit.
