Saddle up and join us on the premier trail riding experience in San Luis Obispo. Madonna Inn Trail Rides is proud of our gentle and friendly horses. Our wranglers are experienced and safety oriented so you can relax and enjoy the trails. Grab the reins for a truly memorable experience!

Requirements:

— Minimum age for the trail is 7 years old.

— Lead around horse for children under 7 years of age is available upon reservation

— Horseback riding is NOT recommended for pregnant women, persons with back problems, certain medical and physical conditions

History

Established in 2012.

Madonna Inn Trail Rides offers guided horseback rides. Rides are available for hotel guests and open to the public as well. Our trail rides are very scenic with endless views of San Luis Obispo, Madonna Mountain (Cerro San Luis Obispo), Laguna Lake, Bishop’s Peak, and ocean views on clear days! Gaze at the deer as they prance through the hills, and catch a glimpse of horse heaven observing the Madonna Inn Quarter Horse mares and their foals grazing in the pastures. We are conveniently located right off the 101 at Madonna Road. We love our horses and we know you will too!

My boyfriend, son & I went for a horse back riding for the holidays several months ago & we were bored to death. The scenery is very «bla», the horses are old & don’t obey commands-(they just follow the horse in the front), the guide did not let us take pictures & got annoyed with us for wanting to stop & just enjoy the landscape for a short time. We will not return to do that activity again :(

I was looking for a place to take my 3 year old to ride… She LOVES horses and was just looking for some entertainment for her. The staff was amazing — be sure you make an appointment before going. We did and they accommodated us right away and Taylor, our wrangler was super sweet and engaging (or trying her best to with a shy little 3 year old) my daughter. She rode «Pancho» who was very well behaved and a calm horse. All the horses look so well cared for and healthy and are very friendly. After her ride we even said hello to some of the other horses who came right up to the fence to be pet.
I would bring our little one again when we are back in the area and would LOVE to try their trail riding if my bus an & I are ever in the area without kiddos.

It was recommended to us that the Madonna Inn had the best horseback riding in the Avila beach area. We booked an hour long ride and went up the trail. Our guide Taylor was AMAZING. She had great conversation through the whole ride and also told us lots more to do at the Madonna Inn along with some history of the area. The horses were very well behaved and the trail was beautiful. I would do it again with Taylor as my guide, no hesitation!

Beautiful location! We took our 2 year old there for a free ride around and he was having a blast! They just ask you to tip them. They provide helmets and you have to sign a form. They literally just take them around in a circle a few times.

We came here for a bachelorette party and had a fabulous time. The staff was friendly, helpful and very willing to take pictures for us. We rode for an hour and then had a picnic right next to the horses. We brought our own food, but you can also have it catered by the Madonna Inn. I definitely will come back with my daughter.

As an avid horse lover, I have ridden at several different trail-​riding establishments over the years, and this is by far the BEST one! The wranglers/​guides are super friendly and clearly love their job and their horses. The setting and horses are perfect for a first-​time rider too — the horses are calm and friendly (they are quite well-​taken-​care-​of) and the trails have no steep scary drop-​offs that I’ve experienced at some other places I’ve ridden.
The views are stunning. You can see over towards SLO, into Edna Valley, out to Laguna Lake and all the hills and peaks that dot the area, and the guides offered to take our pictures against that pretty backdrop. I was so disappointed when the hour-​long ride was over — I’ll just have to go back for another one soon!

Everyone was friendly and helped us feel comfortable and enjoy a great ride. Beautiful Saturday morning, Hattie set our family of five up with a private ride with an excellent wrangler, Moran. My horse was named Johnny Cash :) All the wranglers gave us thorough information before our ride so we had the best experience.

Haddie (sp?) and Erica were both great… knowledgable, kind, professional and friendly. My 8-​year-​old loved her ride (I did not have to go! Yay!). We stayed afterwards to visit with the ponies and goats. Great place!

We were here on our honeymoon, staying in the Madonna Inn. It was fantastic to get out on the horses. It was a great relaxing ride. Ive only ever had 2 riding lessons at home in Scotland and I didnt need them! The horses were very well behaved. The scenery was wonderful too, the great weather did help!

My husband and son went first and had a wonderful time. Their trail guide was Henry and he was great. So professional and kind and they really had a great time riding and visiting with him. My husband talked to Hattie and explained to her that I thought I would not be able to ride due to the arthritis in my knees and I was worried about some issues that my daughter has as well. She assured us that they could work around them. I was embarrassed to get on the horse because of the damage to my knees and Hattie said, «That is what cowboys are for.» And yes indeed they gave me enough of a gentle boost that I was able to get on and off without the pain that I thought I would encounter. My daughter and I had a great ride with Henry and another cowboy the day after my husband and son rode. We will all go riding together next time we go back. We had a great time and felt very safe.

An absolute blast! Our wrangler Katie was a great guide. They have bigger horses so you don’t have to worry about your weight. The owner Haddie was quick to email me back with any questions. It made for a great date. Very knowledgable staff.

We came for a 9 a.m. ride on a Saturday morning. The guide was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. There were only three of us riders and one guide, so we thought, «great, only three of us!»
For whatever reason, I got paired with a horse named Geronimo, who «doesn’t like to have horses behind him.» For that reason, I was to stay behind my husband’s horse, and we had to ride single file. The lady who was immediately behind the guide had a grand time, conversing with her the entire hour. I occasionally heard snippets of their conversation. At a rest stop at the top, the guide was able to talk to all of us and told us the about the Madonna family and the Inn’s history, and we took in a nice view of the entire area.
If we had had a bigger group, I suppose there would have been two guides, which would have made for a better experience for the person relegated to the back of the line.

Went to San Luis Obispo for a girls trip. We stayed at the Madonna Inn and decided to do the trail ride with Haddie. The trail ride was amazing! My friend and I are not experienced at horseback riding, but Haddie made both of us very comfortable on her horses. She is very knowledgeable and compassionate, and you can tell that she really loves her job. Our ride was at Sunset and the trail was just beautiful. Next time we go to San Luis Obispo I definitely plan on riding again with Haddie. It is a must do activity if you are in the area. Thanks again Haddie!

I had such a great time here out on the trails with my friends! There are a wide variety of horses that can accomodate any level of rider. The wranglers, Jesse, Haddie, and Katie, are so friendly and make sure you feel comfortable on your horse. Once you ride up Madonna Mountain, there are spectacular views of Laguna Lake and the surrounding area. We even saw a herd of mares and their babies! It was such a fun and relaxing way to spend the day.
