Dr Hagan Optometrist

Dr. Hagan has always been a great optometrist as far s I am concerned. He sent me to have Narrow Angle Glaucoma checked out (which was treated). That particular diagnosis lead to my having cataract surgery and insertion of Torvic lenses to address my astigmatism.
Now, I only need to wear glasses for reading.
I have been wear glasses for 42 years.

I visited Dr. Hagan at the Hayward Costco. This doctor would not admit he gave me the wrong prescription. I came in to get a new prescription because my old glasses were blurry, and I walked out with the same prescription for myopia and a slightly different astigmatism prescription. I thought it was strange that my prescription hardly changed despite my blurry vision, but I figured the blurriness might be due to my astigmatism, so I said nothing of it. After I got my new glasses from Costco, I realized that my vision was still blurry. I gave the new glasses a week in case my eyes just needed some time to get adjusted. But nope, STILL blurry. Why? Because he gave me the wrong prescription!
I went back to get my eyes rechecked by Dr. Hagan. After the whole 1,2,1,2-drill, he insisted that what I felt made my vision clearer was too strong a prescription for me, and that the prescription he gave me before was the correct one. He kept saying (in a rude, condescending manner) if I choose the prescription that’s «too strong» for me, I’ll end up with headaches. Yes, I understand strong prescriptions will give you headaches, but the problem is that it isn’t the wrong prescription if I can actually see with it. A prescription that helps me see clearly is not the correct prescription? Are you kidding me?! I gave up trying to talk to him. I won’t be seeing this ridiculous doctor again.
After reading all these negative reviews similar to my situation, I feel it’s a good thing he’s not a surgeon — he’d have malpractice suits all over the place.

The California Board of Optometry had a complaint section. It is made for horrible bad doctors like this one.
This guy botched a prescription for me so bad that I cannot wear the glasses. An older expired prescription from Kaiser was shown to Hagen who did note that his method examination was different. He told me to have the glasses remade as the lab had made an error. Well after paying for the second set of glasses and still having one eye so bleary I could not wear the set, that is no change, I made an appointment and had to wait three weeks to see him. He demanded I pay him, I requested a free recheck and did not pay the secretary at the desk when I checked in. After checking into his horrible small cramped office 15 minutes early and watching every drop in patient taken in after me for an exam ahead of me I politely stood up when the doctor came to the door to pick up the Manila file folders put in the rack there by the secretary which by the way are different every day which should say something about the stinky cubicle office or him and what he pays anyone. Any way the doc just picked up my manila file folder held it out and placed it at the end of the other folks who had just dropped in. So this guy plays games with people, wastes their time, does not honor appointments and charges to recheck his bunk work.
Go anywhere beside this jerk when you want a decent doctor. Bring a gas mask for the office, it is a wretched stinking s-​hole too.

I don’t know how other people experiences with Dr. Hagan was so bad BUT mine was pretty darn good.
The first time I went to costco optometry to get a new prescription I was seen by another doctor, I don’t remember her name but I did not like this doctor. She took a look at my eyes and told me that I had an infection and that I needed to go see another doctor about it. This scared the crap out of me because I had an infection a long time ago and it was terrible and I didn’t want another one. After she told me I said ok. She referred me to see a specialist. So seeing her cost me what I think round $ 70. I went to the specialist thinking that something is really wrong with my eyes, but hie takes a look at my eyes and tells me that I don’t have an infection but my eyes aren’t producing enough liquid. He charges me $ 100 plus. So I’m mad because I just spent roughly $ 170 for one doc to say that I have an infection (appt lasted like 5 mins) and the other doc to tell me that I don’t (appt lasted about 15 mins).
So I still need new glasses and contacts so I say okay let me try going again. I call and got an appt with dr. Hagan. This was the BEST decision that i made. Went in to go see him he looks at my eyes and asks me if I have ever had an infection and I then told him yes and the story about it. He listened told me that I had scarring on my eye and a couple other things. He said I couldn’t get contacts or a new description at that time because I need to let my eye heal more and that I needed to deal with a couple other things. All in all I had to come back to see him a couple more times doing the things he asked me to do but I was very happy that he took the time to see me all this time. It definitely did not cost as much as I thought it would. I didn’t feel rushed for time or anything. He made conversation so the whole experience was not awkward. Explained everything in detail for me. Gave me a couple of extra trial contacts at the end. SUPER AWESOME EXPERIENCE. Would definitely recommend him and go only to him in the future.

Dr. Hagan is rude and made us feel as if we were below him. I have never been to a doctor before that has spoken to me in such a demeaning way. My husband had received the wrong prescription (too strong) and when we went back to fix it, Dr. Hagan wouldn’t. My husband now has glasses that make his dizzy and unable to focus. Dr. Hagan literally made us feel so stupid. From what I understand, doctors are suppose to make you feel comfortable, he does the exact opposite.

Dr Hagan is a great guy. Hes very thorough, professional and pleasant. I have been to see him over several years and he has never failed. He is a Costco setting but never rushes you. Always greets you pleasantly and remembers you. Has the previous exam handy as a reference. Its a bit cramped in the office but thats the nature of the space. Fees are reasonable.
The best part is that the exam is first rate and not rushed or compromised in any way. I have been to many Optometrists over the years and he is among the best. He doesn’t sell glasses so there is no pressure to buy. Finish the exam and you get handed your prescription. You can fill it at Costco or where ever you like.

I had a terrible experience with this doctor. He was condescending and curt. So much so that I did not return for my follow up visit and paid a different doctor for an eye exam.

I had a great experience with Dr Hagan. He was knowledgeable and went the extra mile. My experience in past with eye doctors was purely transactional, didn’t get that feeling from him at all.

Dr. Hagan and his receptionists are the best. I’ve been going to the office for more than 6 years, and it’s been great every time. Even though I could get my eye exam at Kaiser with nembership, I go to see him because I trust him and I’m very satisfied with the service. Now, my sisters and my parents are his patients. They like their service as well. Please do not listen to the negetive remarks. Yes, he’s busy, but he gets his job done thoroughly.

I agree with the other complaining about this place and, in particular, this doctor.
I had the same sad situation where it was like pulling teeth to get an RX out of this doctor (and, by law, they are required to give this to you without you requesting it!). Several visits later and still no RX, with him telling me my RX had changed! WTH?
Felt as if I was being rushed through some kind of cattle sale… for all the doctor seemed to care about was getting out of the office so he could take home a pair of contacts to his wife (who called with the request while he was seeing me). He didn’t really pay attention to my needs or comments and your eyes deserve more than this!
You could tell his help wasn’t too happy, either, which is always a bad sign (as they say, everything trickles down?)
I’m amazed some authority governing this industry hasn’t shut him down.
Never again! I’ll walk around blind first than return to this unprofessional person!

went here recently, terrible experience.
felt i was getting rushed out for the next patient — this place is like an assembly line.
dr hagan was extremely rude about stating his opinions for me, & completely disregarded anything i had to say about my optical history
called back a few weeks later to inquire about getting my prescription faxed to a different dr., and the receptionists were absolutely useless. long hold times, transfers, etc. could never get a solid answer on anything.
you get what you pay for. never again.

i had the complete opposite experience as the first reviewer.
i’ve been to my childhood optometrist since i was ten, and one day I decided to try Costco out because it was much closer to home and cheaper.
THANK GOD Dr. Hagan took me off gas permeable lens! i wanted to get those suckers off long ago and find no use to even wear contact lens that you keep for TWO YEARS!!! talk about sanitation! after switching to soft lens, i will NEVER EVER switch back to gas permeable lens… soft lens are much more comfortable and SAFE! imagine driving w/​hard lens, rubbing your eye and oops!!!
i believe Dr. Hagan was only concern about his patient’s eyes when he strongly disagree against RGP lens. i mean, you keep the same lens for TWO years! and it’s uncomfortable! now why would anyone want to go through that torture. I’m sure there’s more chance of getting an eye infection wearing hard lens over soft lens.
anyway, i had other optometrists from Dr. Hagan’s office and thank goodness with their care and precise examination, they were able to find out i had lattice degeneration. my childhood optometrist didnt even catch that. well, thank goodness i know now because lattice degeneration can cause blindness if symptoms occur and no treatment was done.
