21st Amendment Brewery

PSA: THIS PLACE DOES NOT HAVE INDOOR BATHROOMS! ONLY PORTA POTTIES! To be honest, I really like this brewery but had I known of the bathroom situation, I might not have come and would’ve just gone to Drake’s. I’m pretty sure Drake’s has a bathroom, from the one time I went there a few months ago. I think. Being a beer lover and small bladder owner, as well as being a princess, I really can’t frequent a place with porta potties. it’s just unacceptable in this day and age. :(
Okay, now that I got that rant out of the way, this place is pretty cool otherwise. It’s a spacious warehouse with minimal decoration, including a cute «San Leandro» banner and lots of «topless and empty» beer cans lining some of the walls (I giggled immaturely at the bartender’s description). It seems like a pretty family friendly place, since there were lots of kids running around when I came here, and there’s also a bocce ball court and corn hole. I still don’t know how to play bocce ball so I didn’t try, but it was fun to play corn hole. Good way to kill some time trying to sober up from their beers, especially since February is strong beer month!
I got the blind lust, which is a Belgian strong raspberry ale, and damn, it almost took me down, but years of beer-​loving and borderline alcoholism prepared me for this brew. The raspberry adds a nice sweetness to the beer. My bf got the morning after pilz (hehe), an imperial pilsner which was the strongest pilsner I’ve ever had at 8.8%.
There’s a food truck outside – not sure if it varies, but when we went, there was a Mexican truck. Decent Mexican food, not the most amazing I’ve ever had but it does the job. We got nachos and a quesadilla, which was pretty spicy.
As a beer lover I’d definitely come back, but please, add a bathroom soon…

Finally made it to 21^st Amendment and loved it. Got there around 9 on a Friday and it was super chill. I’m not a huge beer drinker but it was good. Great spot to hangout with friends or date night.

This place is HUGE. The East Bay is slowly creeping up as a solid California beercation destination. We decided to take a trip out to the 21^st Amendment’s new location in San Leandro and sample out the beers on tap.
We both decided on a sampler and sat on the patio trying out the different brews. There is a food truck parked outside with cheap eats for under $ 5. I wasn’t too hungry and my snack hit the spot. After a little while, we decided to move inside to a large table. I was so impressed with the overall location, I sat there day dreaming about how big they will be and how many events/​people the place could hold.
Cheers to 21^st Amendment beers!

We got here really accidentally… wanted to go to Drake’s brewery, but it was closed. Someone from Drake’s staff told us to check this brewery (it’s really close).
Frankly, I like Drake’s more, but nevertheless need to admit that place is great (especially late Friday nights — looot of people), beer is yummi (I prefer the Belgian style beer) and now they have some active games. Nice and fun!

The place is huge! They have bocce ball and corn hole, along with very friendly staff. It’s a little bare inside now, but according to staff, they are going to add a restaurant in early 2017. For now, they have a food truck right outside.
And of course, I almost forgot, the beer is yummy.

Pretty chill environment. Empty warehouse, very spacious!, with tables and chairs, a bar and corn holes. If you go at night, or when its cold outside– bring a jacket! It gets pretty cold in there. Bartenders are super chill and friendly.
Cons– no TV! Went in expecting to watch the Warriors game, but that didn’t happen. There is free wifi, just ask the bartenders for the password.
Be sure to try the High Watermelon! $ 7/​cup. The prices are really reasonable.

I love that they now have this location, in addition to the one near At&t park.
Hell or High Watermelon is by far their best beer and what got me into liking this place to begin with.
I also just tried the «He Said» Porter that has the tastiest hint of pumpkin.
We went here at night, so definitely bring your jackets, as it stays freezing cold inside. They also had a good food truck out back that served mexican food.

Sooooo glad they opened a brewery in San Leandro! The warehouse that 21^st Amendment is in is huge, it’s really spacious and honestly when I first walked in I was taken aback by how many cans of beer there were in one place. Honestly, amazing and a thing of my beer drinker dreams.
If you’re an IPA fan, this just may very well be your haven. During my visit, there was an abundance of IPAs to choose from and while I have grown to love IPAs and they’ve become some of my top beer choices — I cannot wait to try some of 21^st Amendment’s stouts! However, if you’re not a fan of IPAs… the choices for you are pretty slim tbh, but maybe it’ll grown on you hehehe or you can just take in the ambiance of all the beer cans around you. Ouuuuu, ahhhhhh! But it is noted that the beers on tap do change with the season, as all breweries tend to do.
One of the downsides is that despite how spacious this brewery is, seating can be limited — especially during peak hours. The seating is a picnic-​table style and there’s seating inside and outside of the brewery. So depending on your mood (or how nice the weather is), you have an option to sit inside or outside! They currently don’t serve food themselves, however, during my visits there has always been a food truck outside. So if your tummy starts to rumble, you do have options.
Customer service was present and awesome. The staff were all really patient with me and my friend & answered any/​all questions we had and even game some suggestions too :)
Note for bathrooms… if you have a thing against port-​o-​potties. This brewery is not your haven. I personally really hate going, but you gotta do what you gotta do esp when the beer is flowing. What I actually found nice was that they were actually pretty clean and well-​kept. But even with the outside sinks, I would suggest bringing your hand sanitizer with you, if you’re planning on visiting!

Lots of parking, huge warehouse to sit with friends and/​or family and drink some delicious brews. You can also buy growlers and beer to take home if you can’t stay and drink. Food truck/​s are outside next to the porto-​potties, and they’re surprisingly pretty clean!
Saw a couple of families playing corn hole while the kids were playing with something else. Very laid back and fun environment.
Just wish they had a restaurant that served up some good food like their location in SF.

Background — Starting our vacation in San Leandro as we have an early flight tomorrow morning. Our friends surprised us with taking us here.
Atmosphere — This place is huge warehouse, and the tanks in this brewery are huge. The space for drinking is wide open with picnic tables for you to sit at and enjoy your beer. They had corn hole for you to play even. They also had a food truck out the one door.
Drinks — They had 9 taps going tonight. One of them blew right before we got there. But that was not an issue it was back up and running and the beer was delivered to us. I went with a beer I was unfamiliar with, Down to Earth, a session IPA. It was a solid IPA.
Service — It was good but not great.
Future — Yes please.

I’m really happy that San Leandro has three breweries now! We have been to Drake’s many times now, but this is our first time at 21^st Amendment. We tried to go to their grand opening night, but we could not find it in the dark. It’s located in an industrial park where there is very poor street lighting that it was almost impossible to find it in the evening! Or maybe we were just too tired. Anyway, second time’s the charm and we were able to find it easily in the afternoon light.
We went in the middle of the afternoon, and while there were people there, it wasn’t crowded at all. The beertenders where in costume as it was Halloween. We approached and got our drinks very quickly. I settled for their Belgian Style Tripel called Good Things. It was good, not the best tripel I’ve had, but at $ 6 a pint, it’s nice. My husband had their flagship IPA (what else?!) and he enjoyed it.
I was so glad they had a food truck there (La Poblana)! It was nice to have some food with our beer as we had not eaten since 11. The nachos went perfectly with our beers. We drank our beer inside as the afternoon sun was a bit harsh outside. Note that there a lot of large tables inside, so they can certainly accommodate large groups and a few tables outside. If you don’t like to use Porta Potties, then you’re out of luck. That’s all they have right now for guests.
We plan to come back and try their other beers. I’m not a fan of their seasonal Watermelon beer, but I do like their Back to Black. Will be back for that I’m sure! Cheers!

Hmmm. Came here to continue Porsche’s b-​day celebration and I must say, I was expecting a bit more out of this place. Perhaps a better ambiance and a piece of watermelon with my beer, but I got neither of the two.
I can’t knock down too much though because they did have a lil style and great pricing on their beers. My favorite decorative piece was the brown bottle with the sunflower on the table! Super cute! Beer isn’t my go-​to drink, but I did enjoy their famous watermelon beer. I would drink it again; however, their beer flight look good too, so I may have that next time =).

How the hell did two of my top 10 favorite breweries end up in podunk San Leandro? With 21^st Amendment moving into the same neighborhood as Drake’s, San Lolo is becoming a craft beer hotspot.
For the longest time, I didn’t even realize that one of my favorite Bay Area beers wasn’t even brewed in California until I looked at the back of one of their cans of Black IPA. Brewed and canned in Wisconsin? Say what?
This building is freaking massive! It looks like they went huge with plenty of room to grow and expand. It feels like you’re in an airport hangar when you walk in.
For as large as the space is, the picnic table seating can disappear quite quickly.
They have big plans for all this space including a restaurant but for now, it’s strictly a bare bones operation. The port-​o-​potties most likely won’t please female guests.
While the brewery is in an unfinished state, their beer is five stars all the way
I don’t know about you but not only do I cheer for the guy that brings the watermelon wheat beer, I also cheer for the company that produces the best of the bunch. Hell or High Watermelon is one of the most drinkable «fruity» beers that you’ll find. No worries about losing your man card while sipping this bad boy. Suck it Budweiser!
Their Black IPA is one of my all time favorites yet I drink it so often, I was looking to try some new stuff that you can’t find on the shelves. Hop Crisis aged on oak chips is a very unique and delicious IPA. Fireside Chat is an excellent winter seasonal sipping brew.
21A is playing off the fact that this massive brewery used to be a Kellogg’s facility. Toaster Pastry is a nod to that heritage. The name may be a gimmick but the medal winning beer is not. A great IPA that’s meant to be savored.
All of their experimental and one off beers I tried were outstanding. Beer tours to San Leandro are suddenly a viable opportunity. And that’s a good thing!

What is there not to like? Great beer, open space, chill people and local.
I have been here twice. Once inside for a visit with friends and during their official grand opening.
During the visits there were food trucks. Good thing since guzzling brews goes well with food.
Prices are affordable and lots of brews to choose from. And seems to be family friendly.

Whoohoo! Finally a popular brewery that isn’t located in the city, where parking is literally 99% impossible to find. Came here on a Sunday afternoon (wasn’t here for their grand opening, which I heard as crazy in terms of watermelon races & food trucks; wild party fasho) around 3:30PM. It was pretty empty (and lots of parking !! :) :)), but gradually started to fill up with a variety of folks. Some were here to celebrate birthdays (grown up drunk galore ya hear me?!) and some were just there to catch up with old friends (like me and my crew).
I haven’t been to the SF one so can’t compare but this brewery was perfect for me. We first got the 6 beer sampler to start with. We got the hell or high watermelon beer (must get, its delicious — tasted kind of like a watermelon jolly rancher beer), the toaster pastry, mocha stout, fireside chat, kristal, and batch cool. At first sip, I liked all of them besides the toaster pastry. It was slightly bitter at first, but after a couple more sips, you’ll love it. FUN FACT: It’s the first beer that was brewed in this brewery btw, since this place used to be the old Kellogg’s plant :)
A couple downsides … my friend had to ask for the watermelon to come with his watermelon beer each time, while everyone else did not seem to have this problem :(We think the bartender just doesn’t like him very much, lol? Also, we tried attending the tour at every hour and each time, there was no tour? There was a sign that said to «sign up here» but it wasn’t there each time. Other than these two downfalls, it definitely is a fun place to catch up with friends/​hang out/​and drink some delicious beer for cheap!
Not sure if I’ll come back, since San Leandro is about a 45 minute drive from where I live. But I did have a lot of fun!

MUST GET HELL OR HIGH WATERMELON WHEAT BEER. Freshing and so delicious! (especially with a fresh slice of watermelon! Come on, who can beat that.)
Seriously, since when has it actually been cool to hang out in San Leandro? But thank goodness for all the breweries popping up! My friends and I went on a Friday evening, and it was already pretty packed! I recommend getting a flight of 5 sample beers for $ 8! Garlic fries on the food truck is probably the best drunk food combo ever, but it comes out a bit cold.
Service was the best! Everyone there was helpful and smiley. Jess was extremely friendly and lead a very late and short personal tour for my friends and I!
Go to the grand opening opening on Saturday, September 29^th! They are introducing a new beer homage to pop-​tarts! (Toaster pastryyyy)

21^st Amendment is a great addition to San Leandro.
Five IPA’s are currently offered, so you’re in luck if you’re an IPA fan. Three ales, two wheat beers and a stout beer is offered too. Pints range from $ 6 to $ 7, most beers are $ 6. I wanted to start off with a beer that I haven’t tried, and I was recommended Mr. Poom’s wheat beer with Thai spices. No, it’s not like drinking Pad Thai in liquid form. The spices come as an aftertaste and hit your palette after the sip. Hell or High Watermelon is one of my favorites, so I couldn’t come here without having a pint! I wish they offered more wheat beers (they’re my favorite), but I’m looking forward to what they brew up in the future.
The brewery is located in an industrial area and there’s plenty of space for parking. I came on a Friday night and expected a crowded house but this place is huge. There’s a patio for your outdoor drinking pleasure as well as communal tables inside. Drunk munchies? They got you covered with food trucks. Be aware that there aren’t any indoor restrooms, port-​a-​potties only!
The staff is more than happy to make recommendations and they offered small tastings so you’re sure to pick a beer of your liking. I didn’t get to do the tour, but I would definitely do it next time. Word on the street is that you get to keep a pint glass?
This location has so much potential and I’m looking forward to see what becomes of 21^st Amendment. (Restaurant please!)

Did you feel that? I did. A disturbance in the beer Force. A big 1. Somewhere in the East Bay. Many of us strong in the beer Force had foreseen the coming of a large 21^st Amendment Brewery in San Leandro. What I was sensing must’ve been that. I hopped on the land speeder & went to investigate.
Indeed, it was 21^st Amendment’s new brewery in San Leandro. But that’s no small moon… er, I mean, that’s no micro-​brewery. That’s a 100bbl commercial brewery! The building they’ve moved into (previously Kellogg’s) is vast. & by vast, I’d say it’s about 100 yards from the front door to the tasting bar.
There’s a short tour every hour during which you can see possibly the largest craft brewery in the entire East Bay at this point.* Even with a such a huge brewing/​kegging/​canning operation, there’s still sprawling expanses of open space in there. Like I said, vast.
The largest area of open space, by the front door, is currently slated to be a restaurant. As such, the place, as a whole, is still pretty raw & unfinished. There weren’t even any public restrooms yet (what!?!). There were restroom signs… that lead to porta-​potties outside the side door.
What they do have here is beer. However, again, with the place being so new & unfinished, they didn’t have taster size glasses in yet. So, it was either full pour or ½ pour. Since it takes clear focus to wrangle the land speeder, I decided not to use my full beer Jedi powers this time.
I just had full pours of their Down to Earth Session IPA, which I took with me during the tour, & their Batch 0001 IPA, after the tour while chatting up some other patrons. Both were solid for the style. All the staff, from tour guides to bar staff, were friendly & informative.
Honestly, though, if I were to rate this place based purely on its currently incomplete state, I’d likely give it 3 – 3.5 stars. But, I’ll round all the way up to 4 stars because the potential here is as apparent as all the vast open space. Actually, all it would take is real restrooms & small glasses for tasters to elevate this place to a valid 4 stars.
I’m sure both those things will happen soon enough. Strong am I with the beer Force. I foresee a day, not too far away, when this will be a fully armed & operational battle station… er, I mean, craft brewery… fully operational craft brewery. & I’m sure I’ll be back to check up on their progress.
* bonus tip: do your history homework on the Volstead Act, Prohibition & its repeal, so you can act like a know-​it-​all when the tour guide asks questions regarding the namesake of this brewery.

Today was a Great Day for a Beer.
And I knew where to go — 21^st Amendment Brewery !!!
I’ve been waiting for them to Open up and complete the Brewery Triangle in San Leandro.
The other two Brewery’s are Drakes a San Leandro favorite and Cleophus Quealy Beer Company and Up and Comer.
San Leandro is Becoming a Mecca for Craft Brewery’s and I’m glad.
21^st Amendment is Located in the Old Kellogg’s Cereal Factory.
This is a Huge Warehouse Industrial Space and there’s Plenty of Parking in there Huge Parking Lot.
They are doing a Soft Opening and have Porto Potty’s set up outside by their Back Patio.
They have a nice Bar area setup with several large Communal Wood Tables to sit and drink at.
They make one of my Favorite Beers– Hell or High Watermelon Wheat 4.9%.
Its Summer in a Pint and I had several of them.
There was a Food Truck posted next to the Patio for your dining pleasure.

You sign up for the Tour at the Gift Shop. The Tours last 30 Minutes.
My lovely Tour Guides were Jessica and Elaine they were a Wealth of Information and were super nice.
The Brewery Tour itself was very Impressive — From the Huge Grain Silos, The Canning, Keg Lines, The Holding and Fermentation Tanks. Wow !!!
I cant wait to see the Restaurant come in to the Equation.

It’s funny as I am not a big beer drinker but yet I was anxiously waiting for 21^st Amendment to open. Maybe it was the first step to some much needed growth in my hood. I could not pass up the chance to be there on opening day even if it is just the tail end of it. I thought they were going to have food trucks (plural) there for some pub grub since their Tree House brewpub won’t be open for awhile but they only had the Burnt Ends food truck there. A brisket or pull pork sandwich would go well with the brews but a part of me was secretly hoping Bacon Bacon would be there. Salt point pretzels was also on hand with their pretzels baked with beer right into them.
Now onto the brews… They had 9 beers to choose from at the tasting bar for $ 6 and I was originally looking for Batch 0001 which is the first brew from this new SL facility. I saw a Batch 1000 but no 0001 so went for the tried and true Hell Or High Watermelon which may be one of their original flavors. Light with a slight hint of watermelon makes this one a summertime winner.
They ran out of glasses towards the end but overall, a great opening day!
