What A Room!

Ken and company were outstanding — taking time on a busy holiday weekend to really listen to what we wanted, and ensuring the custom sectional would fit in our space. Using a tape measure and his sample couches, Ken showed us what it would look like and described how it would fit in our room. He was incredibly patient and helpful as we and our energetic toddler tried out different seat sizes, cushion firmnesses, and fabric /​microfiber and bonded leather choices.
The quote we got for this great custom sectional was very reasonable. And it wasn’t some secret backroom «based on the customer’s zipcode & car style» pricing — the basics are written right there on the wall, along with many options and their prices!
Ultimately we chose a more mechanical /​modern style /​top grain leather option from a different place. For anyone looking for fabric sofas, I’d enthusiastically recommend What A Room!

The staff is rude. I bought a sofa from them but they did not give us the pillows. After calling and visiting them many time they made pillows which were huge for my sofa. They themselves agreed that the size is not appropriate. After calling and visiting them again many times I still haven’t received my pillows. Also, they don’t care about the customer. I will not recommend this place to anyone.
Update: The owner called and apologized and he promised for the pillows and remedy. So I am updating this review. I hope he stays onto his words now.

Update: I went back the following day and the service was outstanding!
Really disappointed. Left work early and drove down from San Francisco so I could buy a couch but I’m standing outside the door at 6:24pm that shows they’re open until 7pm…

Original «I went to the shop early December in 2015 and we ordered a customized sofa along with extra pillows. While we were ordering it, the owner was really nice and friendly. So we immediately ordered everything. And after they delivered the sofa, we realized the customized part was not there, it was the original sofa we saw in the store. So basically, the notes we left got completely ignored. And after many rounds of painful phone calls, we decided to take the sofa and accept the $*** remedy for that. BUT we never received anything!!! And the extra pillow we ordered, we also never received them. I called and the owner said like «:oh, can you confirm your address in email? I am sending it. «And then i sent everything via email and got ignored one more time. Now I just feel like nothing will work and I waste lot of time on this. At this point, I really do not know when he will respond to me. It has been a month since we talked, I feel helpless at this point. I just want write this email to remind everyone.
Be careful of this place, they looked friendly and warm in the store. And if anything happened after you paid, it’s another story.»
Update: «everything finally got resolved. I guess they do care about their customers, but it seems that they do not have enough resources to execute them perfectly. I hope it’s just miscommunication. In the end, I got what I ordered. And nice thing is that he doubled the remedy for us, so I do appreciate that.
They do have lot of affordable interesting furnitures I do not see at other places, so it’s still a good option.»

We needed a new couch. My wife had a vision for what we needed. What a Room had great recommendations on Unilocal so we went with them and I’m glad we did! The salesman worked closely with her to make sure her vision was realized. We love it! The shape, the color, the height, all perfect. And comfortable!

I getting tired of visiting different furniture stores and was recommended this place by an relative.
It has been almost an month since I got my sofa. No problem so far and I am happy with what I got, exactly what I ordered.
The showroom was nice and I didn’t feel rushed by any pushy sales people. Olivia was patient and provided a lot of advice.
Of course, when you order something custom it does take time. On the other hand, you get exactly what you ask for. Things like style, color, length, height, depth, firmness etc…
Next time looking to get more furniture, this would be first place I would check out first.

I did my search on the custom sofa thing and this place has a very good pricing on it as well as great customer service! I didn’t get their names but there is a man and a woman I believe it is a mom and her son and they own the store. While choosing, they give you great advice and they do have an eye for it too! I tried to visit other places like that and got little to no help from the sales men and just felt like they just trying to sell me rather than giving a sound, professional advice. What A Room did none of that! They were so, so helpful and honest!
They have a ton to choose from! Not only the things they have in the showroom but also catalogs!
We got the sofa in about 2 weeks! With really nice, efficient and clean assembly team that brought it into our house (less than 10 minute assembly!)

Who knew there was a place you could get custom furniture in San Jose? I certainly didn’t.
For Christmas, I was looking to replace my parents’ cheap, rundown, 10+ year old, China-​made love seat and couch with something that would fit their long, narrow living room. It was about 9 days out before Christmas. I couldn’t find anything at Living Spaces or Ashley furniture that would fit the space or come before the 25^th.
My cousin introduced me to Daniel and I gave him the measurements of the room. He directed me to the perfect size couch and from there I was able to pick the style of the pillows, firmness, couch frame, and fabric. Everything is made by the store so you know it is American quality. He was very knowledgable and helped out a great deal. The main reason I went with them was because he could guaranteed it to come before Christmas.
The price of the couch was very reasonable in my opinion since you are getting something that will for sure fit the space, that is custom, and came when I wanted it to. I added a matching ottoman to complete the look.
When the couch came, it was perfect. They even threw in a three throw pillows. It was an L-​shaped sectional with a chaise at the end of it. My family loved it! It is such a nice, cozy addition to their home.
My only gripe was the delivery part of it. I chalk it up to the Christmas time rush. Make sure you secure the date and time of delivery. The receptionist called me to tell me a certain day and time (1 – 3). Then Daniel called me that he couldn’t do it until a later time (4 – 6), which I couldn’t do so he said he if couldn’t do it between 1 – 3, then he would deliver Christmas Eve morning. On the day of delivery, 1−3pm came and went and then I receive a phone call with the delivery guy around 3:30 saying that they were on their way. I didn’t want to miss the delivery so I had to call someone to rush home by 4 to receive it. Since they were able to make it in such a short time period, I let that slide for the most part.
In terms of the quality of the product, it is great. You can tell the difference between the foreign made stuff. They have a lifetime guarantee on their frames and a year warranty on the fabric.
Thank you so much for the wonderful end result! I would definitely come back for another one for my future home!

Who needs a custom sofa? Whenever we see the word «custom» next to any furniture piece, the assumption is that you will be taken to the cleaners right? Well NOT in this case! I knew I needed something custom in terms of measurements, as I wanted to replace an old/​dated sectional in the corner of my living room. One would assume that any sectional would do, but I wanted to not only maximize the space, but I wanted the right color, material and style! This is where What A Room comes into the picture.
With all of this in mind, I was able to speak to Daniel (Co-​owner) in person. I showed him pictures of the space, and told him exactly what I was looking for. I figured that if Daniel were to actually see my living room in person, he’d be able to not only visualize what would look best, but he would also get a chance to measure the space from end to end. He mentioned that they don’t typically do that, but agreed to still accommodate my request. At this point, I knew I was in good hands.
The typical turnaround time for a custom sofa is 2.5 to 3 weeks, but Daniel was able to get it done for me in 2 weeks flat! I was a little skeptical in terms of the actual dimensions (It was longer on both ends), but I had to trust his expert opinion. When the sofa arrived, it was PERFECT!!! Based on MY experience, I can’t help but give these guys a SOLID 5 Stars!

If you are in need of a custom piece of furniture to fill an important space in your castle, stop by and ask for Daniel! He will hook you up! **You can thank me later :)**

I really wanted to love this place. Initially, I had a pretty good experience when ordering my custom couch, it was pretty seamless. However, after I placed the order, everything went downhill from there. I never had any follow up from the store and always had to reach out to them regarding the delivery schedule. The salesperson always seemed to be in a hurry and either put me on hold, call me back, did not want to converse more than 1 minute. Also, when it came down to delivery they delivered the wrong couch. I had to wait 2.5 weeks to get the correct one.
I’m all about customer service when making my purchases and was definitely disappointed. I have an empty house to furnish, but won’t be coming back here.
UPDATE: I’m revising my review since the store followed-​up with me after reading the above and tried to make it up. I felt like his apology was sincere and I believe that they really do try their best to ensure customer satisfaction.

Great selection and staff. Daniel helped me get a great deal on a sofa I wanted and for the price I paid the quality is unmatched with the other stores I checked. They were able to get me the sofa in a short time-​frame and it was custom built to my liking in terms of firmness, length, and color. There was a glitch in the delivery the first time, but they made up for it by being prompt the second time. I would definitely recommend this place for any furniture needs as their pricing is fair, the quality is great, and the staff is helpful.

Pretty awesome experience! It’s my first time not getting ikea/​craigs/​store bought furniture and we were able to order a custom couch here. The process was smooth and friendly and I felt like we were given a lot of guidance since we had a rough idea of what we wanted.
The finished product is fantastic! Delivery was smooth and quick and I am typing this very happily right now on my new couch… instead of the beautiful, cold, hardwood floor.

This place worked for us. Hubby and I went to 4 other places and were not impressed. Sure the other places had lots of space and selection but none of the pieces seemed different, unique. Checked this place out because of the reviews and yes this place is small, but the staff was helpful and paid attention. We ended up picking out a dining set from a catalog, we knew what we liked.
We love our table and chairs, and know the quality is good. It has clean lines and a basic style. Perfect. Think the delivery was longer than expected, we had to call about status. What we received was the important part so we worked thru the rest.

When I think of «quality over quantity» and integrity, What A Room! definitely comes to mind.
I was in a rush to find furniture for my new lease in San Francisco and thanks to Daniel and Ken, I am more than happy and situated in the comfort of my home. As you may know, condos in San Francisco are quite small, but Daniel and Ken both helped me pick out the pieces fit for the space and my taste. Since they have an eye for décor, their honest opinions in material, accent colors, and furniture size/​shape were extremely helpful as well.
I’ve seen What A Room’s staging at many homes during open houses or real estate advertisements and each time, the work is remarkable, tasteful, and elegant. It’s amazing what Daniel and Ken come up with each time.
Delivery is very timely as well. There are many events up in San Francisco but Daniel and Ken accomodated for a speedy flat rate delivery. The assembly time was efficient as well.
Again, thank you to What A Room for making what was an empty condo very cozy and warm for a girl that’s living alone in a great city.

What A Weird Experience!
This experience started so strong and positive, but gradually degraded to where I am now: very confused.
When we visited What A Room! last weekend looking for a couch, we had a lovely experience. The salespeople helped us design a custom couch and were very polite and professional. They even offered us free delivery! When (what I can only assume was a manger) found out we were new to the area and had no furniture at all, he promised us a rush order and that we would have the couch delivered by the next weekend! We were so blown away by our in-​store experience. I really thought it was all too good to be true, but believed the hype because of all the positive Unilocal reviews I read…
I hate to say I was right.
My husband and I experienced a week of «customer service» that was all over the place. They never called us when they said they would to give us delivery information, and after a few days go by and we call to check status, we were told our couch wasn’t made correctly and would have to be completely redone. The lady on the phone couldn’t give me any further information as to when I could expect my couch, but said the manager would call me right back. He didn’t call until the next day, and asks to schedule a delivery for that afternoon. No mention of our couch being «damaged». We were unable to be home last minute for the delivery and requested they deliver it the next day when we would be available and were told we’d get a call back to confirm. We received no such call.
Finally my husband calls for information and was told the couch would be delivered the following day. When it arrived, the delivery guy was very rude and told us he never would have delivered to us that day if he knew our apartment complex didn’t have a service elevator. What?
Look, we like the couch. It seems to be good quality, looks great, and it fits our exact needs.
I’d recommend the couch and the in-​store service. But I can’t recommend their poor follow-​up, misinformation with no accountability, and delivery guys with crappy attitudes. They definitely over-​promise to make a sale.
I’m torn between 2 and 3 stars.
EDIT: I’m revising this review due to the follow-​up we received from the manager after reading the above. Almost immediately after posting this the manager both emailed and called us to apologize for the inconsistency in service from his employees. His apology felt very sincere and he really listened to our concerns. I’m all for businesses who accept constructive feedback for the betterment of their business and their customers. My husband and I both really appreciated the follow-​up and can believe that maybe our experience was a «one-​off».
We do really like our custom couch.

This is a bit of a different type of furniture store. Their showroom is really small, but this location is more about customizing your furniture to your exact needs. So you probably won’t come here looking for something and walk away with exactly what you’re looking for that very same day. It might be a few weeks later that you actually have what you need.
Still, the service here was impeccable. The lady at the entrance treated us with a lot of respect and was very kind and patient with explaining how this store worked. While we didn’t walk away with buying something we did feel like we learned something and would always like to experience this while shopping.
A nice little place that’s easy to overlook. If you’re interested in having a custom furniture set, then come here.

If I could give more stars to What A Room! I absolutely would! My husband and I just purchased our first home and we were obsessed with finding the perfect furniture for our house. We visited more than 10 furniture stores but always left empty handed. A few weeks ago I came across What A Room!, I was instantly excited and knew that we had found the store that would fit our needs. Our living room configuration is harder to work with because we have many openings and doors, and no matter which way we thought we could put our couch it would block part of an entrance point.
We had the pleasure of working with Daniel. He definitely knows his stuff and was very patient with us. My husband and I had different ideas of what we wanted for our dream couch. He wanted a large «man couch» with a darker color and I wanted a sleek and smaller lighter colored couch that would look elegant. LOL… My husband and I actually started arguing about in the store about which couch to get when Daniel said he would come to our house and do a consultation with us to look at our space. He wanted us to buy a couch that we would both be happy with and that would look great in our living room.
What I really love about What A Room! is not only can they customize an entire couch for your living space (the original model we liked was a microfiber fabric that was about 8 inches too long for our house), the prices are good, and have an awesome show room, but they really epitomize customer service. Daniel knew that my husband and I had different preferences for couches but he was able to create a customize our couch so that both of us were super happy.

Ken and Daniel over at What A Room are fantastic! They are very knowable in spatial awareness with your home. I wanted a custom couch and due my point of entry, they were able to recommend ways to get my custom couch without sacrificing quality. I would highly recommend them for all your furniture needs. Especially their custom couches, the quality is superb and you get exactly what you want.
Oh and I forgot to mention that they even helped move our old couch to the garage. Best service!!!

This place has great customer service. They actually listen to you and what you are trying to get done decorating your home. They have energy but also not high pressures sales people.
It’s pleasant inside, cool, comfortable and they even have a big screen tv to watch while you wait for the paper work.

Overall GOOD. We went in from word of mouth from indirect friends who ordered from here and other Unilocal reviews. Close by us and plenty of parking.
Customer service is superb very attentive and honest. Not pushy and the lady even suggested we take our time and not spend too much money at once! They give honest opinions even if it means they don’t make a sale. I heard another sales guy say they don’t sell certain brands due to low quality which was nice to hear they are honest.
We ordered a couple custom couches, dining room table and chairs (refer to photos). Competitive low prices for sure! Paying by cash is better… ask them about it. Free delivery for local customers. They call you ahead of time to let you know when to expect them.
