Sam’s Downtown Feed & Pet Supply

This place is awesome! My boyfriends family got chickens and we needed some hay and feed so we hit up this place because they sell the hay in bigger sizes than an-jan’s.
Let me tell you, this store is awesome!!! So much variety. My favorite is organic so j always try to get that when possible. If you have pets or even animals, I recommend hitting this store up

Wow! great service, honest advise. They’re competitive with their pricing. I love the old country flair that you get on your visit. I highly recommend if your pet (dog, cat, chicken, horse) needs that special care or quality food. If wonder how customer service is suppose to be ask for Ericia

Wonderful service and great place to go if renting hay bales. We had a special pony party for my daughter and glad we could rent them for $ 5 instead of purchasing for $ 11. They also rent horse saddles and sell horse shoes. And not to mention, it’s a really cute vintage store!

I really like this store and try to support local businesses when I can. The couple, whom I assume are the owners, are extremely friendly and helpful. However, I have found, on a number of occasions, the other staff to be rude and unfriendly. These are the ones I also seem to deal with when I am in the store and when I call to place orders which also makes me not interested in returning. Where local businesses often can’t compete on price, they can compete in customer service. I would urge the owners to remind this to their staff.

Love this place! Everyone is super helpful and they have things you can’t find anywhere else around here.

Update: In search for a special outdoor mat (with no luck at general hardware stores), I started reaching out to feed and pet supplies. Upon calling Sam’s, the person who helped me was extremely nice, friendly and accommodating. When I arrived at the store, I realized that I had been here once before… When I got inside, I wasn’t greeted, or assisted by anyone (there were a few people around the sales counter), BUT when I did get to the sales counter, he (the same person who I spoke with earlier) remembered that we had spoke over the phone and said he didn’t hear me come in, otherwise he would have helped me.

As a taxidermist I need to purchase salt in bulk, 100 pounds at a time. Sam’s Feed Supply has been my go to supply house for several years now. Great prices, friendly staff, and easy access from the freeway. I highly recommend you stop by Sam’s Feed for all your animal needs.

I just recently started raising chickens and stopped into Sam’s today to buy straw and chicken scratch. Not only did they have an organic version of what i was looking for (Score!) but the man who helped me was very nice and answered all my questions. He wrote down a bunch of information for me on where to buy pullets and gave me some advice on purchasing chickens. He even loaded my truck after my boyfriend said he could do it. EXCELLENT SERVICE. I will definitely be back!

This is a great resource, being near downtown and having a decent pet supply selection as well as things for the urban farmer. Their prices are good, considering they are an independent store than can’t buy at the low prices that the big chain stores can get things.
The employees are all quite possibly the nicest retail workers you’ll ever come across.
They sometimes sell a few hyper-​local goods like Veggielution plants and Henninger honey. Too cool!
As far as feed stores, in central San Jose there are also Dave’s Hay Barn and Ganado’s, they may have what you need depending on the animal.

I came here to get an ACME industrial strength cat carrier for my beloved Romeo, who is a large, powerful beast of cat. We had a little «incident» with Romeo when we first got him. We tried to drive 2 blocks without a cat carrier. We rescued Romeo, so he had never been in a car before… he completely flipped out, and jumped on my BF who was driving, causing my BF to jerk the wheel and crash into a parked car. Yeah.
Let’s just say that my Saab was totaled. It was not a happy day. [Everyone was fine, including Romeo, and I upgraded to an Audi, so it’s all good] But I digress!!! ;-)
Sam’s has awesome cat carriers! I got a SERIOUS one for a good price. I took Romeo to the vet in it, and he was an angel. They also have a nice cat treat selection. The staff people were helpful and friendly too.

We’ve never been disappointed with the selection or advice. Sam & his staff are very knowledgable & willing to take time to answer questions. Also appreciate that there are a lot of Made In USA pet food choices.

I know Sam is a very sweet man with an honorable work ethic. However, he obviously wasn’t there when I visited the store. The employees stood behind the counter with their backs turned toward me. I asked one of the duck dynasty looking dudes if they sold hay and he told me that he was on his lunch. He was in the doorway, it’s not like he was sitting outside. Maybe just an off day?

I come here to spend money on my dog and chickens. The staff is generous and on-​target with recommendations and they carry some hard to find brands (like Fromm dog food).

Great place for animal supplies!!! Friendly staff and they usually have what you are looking for in stock. I like the vast selection of equine supplies they carry and the prices are very competitive in the area. Support a local business and go to Sam’s!

I came here a couple of months ago asking if they were selling chickens. Sam gave me directions to around 5 different places that raise chickens, and gave me very thorough information on what to look for and the different types of chickens. For someone who has never had chickens before, this was very very good knowledge to have.
Last week I finally got around buying 5 chickens (from somewhere else), and had to get the feed/​scratch/​feeder etc. Sam walked me around the store for 30 minutes at least, telling me about all the ins-​and-​outs of owning a chicken and taking care of it. The best part was the prices! Everything was so cheap!
This is by far the best customer-​service I have EVER received by any place. I have never felt like such an important customer. I will definitely come back here for more, and I certainly will recommend this place for anyone who’s looking for not only chicken feed and supplies, but any pet/​farm needs. This place got everything!

I stopped here during my lunch break because I needed a couple of burlap sacks. They were just $ 2 each, and customer service was friendly and helpful. The end… I thought.
Upon returning to the office, I realized I had lost my work badge. I called Sam’s to ask them to keep an eye out, and they went the extra mile:
1. They checked if anybody had seen it.
2. They looked around where I had walked. (Unfortunately I had wandered pretty much the entire floor.)
3. They took down my information in case it should turn up later.
I was really impressed that they’d go to so much trouble. Thanks Sam’s!
… I later realized the badge had hooked onto my seat belt and fallen off in the car. smh.

I have chickens. I’ve tried multiple places in the Bay Area and keep coming back to Sam’s. They have great prices and more important, knowledgable staff. It’s really nice coming in here and knowing that i’m going to get good service and feel comfortable with my purchases.
TL;DR: Everything a feed store SHOULD be!
