He is the best doctor I’ve ever known. I had acnes all over my face. After 7-​month-​treatment, my acnes are disappeared. No more acnes right now.

First visit to see Dr. Luu and my last! Office staff was lovely, especially Vera, but Dr Luu’s obvious knowledge was enormously overshadowed by his rude demeanor. I was told I was OLD (and yes, I’m 65, but am genetically blessed, but 65 is still not old) at least 4 times and he walked in without a single pleasantry. When asked for his recommendation of a sunscreen, he recommended zinc oxide or long sleeves for an upcoming trip to Hawaii. Seriously??? Socialization skills are certainly needed.

This review is actually written on behalf of my husband who went to Dr. Luu several months ago. My husband has suffered from cystic acne since adolescence and every doctor he went to prescribed antibiotic after antibiotic and accutane. He had been suffering from this condition for over 25 years and no one was able to offer a permanent solution. In fact when we met 6 years ago he was having really bad scalp outbreaks on a weekly basis and we tried everything from more antibiotics prescribed by another dermatologist and his primary care doctor, to changing his pillow case on a daily basis, to topical ointments and cleansers to tea tree shampoo and even shaving his head! NOTHING worked. His outbreaks were painful and would bleed and so he finally ended up in Dr. Luu’s office. He listened to my husbands history, took cultures of the acne and prescribed some medication that is used to treat tuberculosis and I swear on my life his problem completely DISAPPEARED! In six years I have never seen his scalp acne free! And what’s amazing is he has not had an outbreak in over 6 months! Amazing! Dr. Luu was incredible and we are so grateful as no other doctor was able to help in all these years! Thank you Dr. Luu

The Unilocal description, «Eek! Methinks not.» applies perfectly — after trying to sift through United’s providers in network, and then looking them up on Unilocal,I thought, Mychael Luu will do (hadn’t read all the reviews mind you, just wanted to find a doc with a high rating and more than 4 reviews). Anyways — the woman who picked up the phone did not even ask what the appointment was for. What she did say: 1. what insurance do u have? 2. the next available appointment is September 11. Honestly, anyone who needs a derm now — you can drive a few miles up one of the nearby freeways to a doctor who will do a good job and you won’t have to wait a month for them. Read the other reviews — he has a good rating but there are some awful reviews, BEWARE of anything whose reviews have this kind of extreme! Clearly, he is good with some areas of dermatology and doesn’t even know the basics about others, like good patient-​doctor relations.

I have been going to Dr Luu off and on for many years, whenever I need a mole, wart removed or bumps on my skin zapped. Have always been satisfied with the care he provides. My friends remarked that my skin looks nicer too. I, for one, am thankful I found a Dr who is competent and whom I can trust.

*****WARNING****** Do not see Mr. Luu should you need to have any procedures done to your skin! He doesn’t listen to the patient nor does he consult your charts prior to doing the procedure. He removed the WRONG thing from my skin, when my charts clearly stated the removal of a MOLE and had a picture of the mole attached. When I told him he removed the wrong thing, he tried to then talk me out of removing the original mole that was supposed to be removed! We are talking about a surgical procedure, I now have TWO bloody incisions on my neck, instead of one. He also advised me that if I knew anyone with a medical background they could remove my stitches, what kind of doctor doesn’t want you to come back for a follow up to check for infection and remove their own stitches!!! I am beyond MAD and disgusted that some so NEGLIGENT practices medicine. GO at your OWN RISK!

I have been having some skin problems for a few months now and my Physician was clueless giving me some hardcore antibiotics and shit (for which my stomach lining got messed up and now I gotta see a Colon specialist but that is another story).
So anyway, I found Dr Luu on Unilocal — ratings looked good enough. I got an appointment for 4 weeks down the road (need to be taking a star off for this but he is a busy guy for a particular reason). So I show up. He met with me and immediately took some samples off my skin by scraping it off a little and said he would let me know in 3 minutes whether it was fungus or bacteria or whatever. He comes back and says, neither but I have eczema. I was surprised but my son has similar problems. He gave me a steroid to use for 1 day and some other regular ointments. Dude, got cured in 2 days and not only me but my long suffering son got his skin problems taken care of cuz I used the same stuff… awesome Dermatologist! You got skin issues, he is the dude.
next stop — Colon specialist — gotta try to keep away from my regular doctor, I think he is trying to ruin my life and succeeding.

He is great! Everyone on his staff is very professional and friendly. He is very patient and explains everything very clearly. I would highly recommend Dr. Luu.

Recently, my acne started flaring up again, so I immediately started searching for dermatologists. I moved to San Jose from Fresno where I was seeing another dermatologist. The waiting time was only twenty minutes, whereas in Fresno I had to wait an hour to two hours. In comparison, Dr. Luu’s office was way more friendly and personal. I left with a prescription and will be seeing him in another month!

I felt rushed through my whole appointment and didn’t get all my questions answered. I saw Dr. Luu for about 3 minutes then he started walking toward the door about to exit the room. I then told him I still had another problem to consult with him. My appointment last approx 5 minutes. Overall, I would not recommend this place because you would hardly get all your questions/​concerns address before leaving the office because of the little time the Dr. spend to see you.

came here 3months ago. office is very nice and clean. dr. luu is very knowledgable and professional. because of him, my son’s eczema is now cured. so i highly recommend Dr. luu to be anyone’s dermatologist. His colleague (forgot her name) is very nice as well and very patient. if she doesn’t know the answer to your question, she will make sure to ask Dr. Luu and relay the answer to you.
The staff are ok. Not as friendly as others that i have encountered. Over all, i highly recommend Dr. Luu.

I have to start by saying that I really do like Dr Luu, because he never makes me feel that he is in a hurry, he’s professional and on time. His office is brand new, beautiful, and very professional looking.
Both of my thirteen year old sons see Dr Luu, and I do as well.
Had an appointment today, and have to admit that I did not have the same experience I had in the past, with the front desk staff. Today the girls were very pleasant, and helpful. So, I take back the bad previous review regarding the receptionist. Maybe she doesn’t work here any longer, not sure.

The second dermatologist I have seen in San Jose after moving here from Los Angeles where I had a fantastic dermatologist, Dr. Brian Dubow. If you are going there, check him out. Beverly Hills area.
Dr. Luu was pleasant, thorough, knowledgeable. He took plenty of time with me, spotted problem area I had forgotten to tell him about, took photos so he can progress my treatment. He did a couple of biopsies both of which turned out to be basal cell carcinoma needing surgery. I had one of the surgeries today. Dr. Luu gave me a copy of the report from the pathologist, carefully explained everything and answered my questions. I would say it would be a tie as to who is best between him and and Dr. Dubow.
His office staff was very pleasant and professional..

Dr. Luu has been my oldest daughter’s dermatologist for quite some time now and his services so far has been great. His assistant Nicole is really caring and actually takes her time to look thru everything. My daughter has had eczema since she was born so it feels good to know that there’s doctors that really do care.
His office is always looking so clean and smells fresh right when you walk in. I like the convenience of signing in thru this small electronic device rather than writing in your name, phone #, etc. It’s like «Dont you have all that info; why do you need it again?»
I love that they have a wall full of samples! I definitely recommend Dr. Luu & Nicole as your dermatologists!

had a great experience here today. First time patient and I saw Dr. Luu’s assistant (not a nurse) she was very knowledgable and patient with my questions. she photocopied some articles from a book to better explain what she was saying. She took the time to listen to everything i had to say, she zapped a couple warts, gave me some topical cream for my patchy hairloss and also something for my hand. She took the time to check out a mole i had as well and brought doctor luu in for a second opinion and made me feel assured that everything was fine.
its really really nice to feel good leaving a doctors office (fyi i hate doctors usually)

I booked with Dr. Luu based on the Unilocal reviews and things must have changed at his office.
I show up and walk up to the counter, and the girl behind the counter is wearing a t shirt, and obnoxious black eyeliner and instead of saying «hello!» and welcoming me to the office, she says «yeah?». Really? Did you just yeah me? I can only describe her at best as «disinterested» and at worst «outright rude». There is another woman sitting right next to her who doesn’t even look up at me.
After about 10 minutes I get called back, and a nurse with the same attitude as the front desk girl, and fancy red streaks in her hair, takes me back. As I explain the symptoms of what I think is a life altering skin condition she seems to be fairly bored with me/​slash her job.
Dr. Luu comes in and confirms the life altering skin condition, and while he is showing me how it is so much worse than I thought the nurse doesn’t even make eye contact. He prints up material for me, and mentions about a billion possible treatments with at most 30% effectiveness and gave me a prescription, coupon and two samples. Dr. Luu did give me a lot of information, but it was rushed, and not very clear. Most importantly there was zero sympathy or consideration by Dr. Luu or anyone on his staff. I was just diagnosed with a skin condition that there is no cure for and I can’t even get a pat on the shoulder?
I wonder if I would have been treated better if I had been there for botox instead of an actual illness? I would hate to go into that office and be told that I have skin cancer. The office staff would probably be really annoyed that you were interrupting a busy day of gum smacking and eye rolling.

My baby girl is growing up. The tween years are hard, even without the stress of having blemishes. Over the counter products were just not cutting it. I knew I had to do some homework. After reading Dan M.‘s review, I decided to set up an appointment. Dr. Luu’s office was easy to find, centrally located, and very nice. The office staff were friendly and professional. They were even kind enough to provide samples of prescription items, and more! Dr. Luu is a class act, and gets an A+ in my book!

dr. luu is a nice guy and knowledgable. however often times he seemed very inpatient and wanted my time with him to go as fast as possible so he can move onto the next patient.
he made me feel more like he was trying to sell me a product rather than truly caring for my skin health. he probably should spend more time on patient history also and customer care
on a positive, he does typically always give you a sample first so that is nice.

Mychael Luu is a great dermatologist. I have been seeing him for over a year for various problems.
He is super patient and never in a rush. He seems like just a great person you can talk to about anything.
He was willing to listen to my opinion on treatments and was able to diagnose mystery skin conditions I’ve had for my whole life. I highly recommend his services.
