Specialties
Lean fresh Italian sausage (around 88% fat free), all natural, with no preservatives and NO MSG. We only use trimmed cuts of meat, and grind it coarse, so that it doesn’t look like a hot dog. Keep in mind that the average sausage anywhere else has three times the amount of fat that ours does. We currently retail our Mild, Garlic, Hot, Extra Hot, and Wine & Cheese sausages on a regular basis.
Our other specialties include pasta plates, ravioli plates, fresh peppersteak sandwiches, Italian marinated tri-tip sandwiches, garlic bread, gourmet desserts, reasonably priced bulk olives, and HUGE sandwiches. Most of our sandwiches include well above a quarter pound of meat in them, and they are made to order with all the fixings.
Our sausage sandwich is our most popular item. Our flame grilled zucchini sandwich is a favorite among vegetarian customers.
We also carry a selection of niche Italian food items, imported wines, Peroni beer, and reasonably priced vinegars and oils.
History
Established in 1908.
Chiaramonte’s was founded in 1908 on 13th St., and it is still family owned and operated. This makes us the oldest retail foodservice business in the county and one of the oldest family-owned Italian delis in the entire country. Five generations of Chiaramontes have been involved in the business, with the fourth and fifth generations currently running the business.
Salvatore and Alfonsia Chiaramonte founded the business 101 years ago. Salvatore was a butcher by trade and had immigrated here from Sicily only four years earlier. He brought with him the sausage recipes that we use today – recipes that go back several hundred years.
Currently, Chiaramonte’s is undergoing an expansion phase. Chiaramonte’s Sausage and Deli in the Cupertino Square Mall food court opened in March, and Chiaramonte’s Pizza is due to open next to that venue in the next month or two. Chiaramonte’s is also scheduled to open a deli with full bar at the SJC airport by Feb. 28, 2010.
Meet the Business Owner
Louis C.
Business Owner
I’m 27 years old and proud to be the fifth generation in our family business. The business has been witness to a lot of changes over the last century, and I my goal is to make sure that it lives to see many more in the future. I own the business along with my parents, and we deeply care about our customers and the quality of the food we serve them.
We are all thankful, that my wife, Lt. Col. Gwen Chiaramonte, is safely home after spending nearly a year in Iraq with the 1352nd combat stress brigade of the US Army Reserves.
