History

Established in 1983.

Back in 1977 my partner, John Carroll, and I opened St. John’s Bar & Grill in Cupertino. In 1980 we opened the 2nd St. John’s on Lawrence Expressway in Sunnyvale where we are now celebrating our 30th Anniversary.

In the early years of St. John’s, Sunnyvale there were not a lot of folks living nearby and we had specials to attract people in at night — Seafood, Pasta, Barbecue — the barbecue took off and they rest is history. We spent months traveling around Texas, experimenting with barbecue sauces, cooking with mesquite, hickory, and oak, perfecting our recipes, and finally opening the first Armadillo Willy’s BBQ in Cupertino in 1983. We have been striving to serve up the best barbecue west of Texas ever since. We now have eight locations around the Bay.

Business Owner

John has been cooking barbecue for almost 30 years but will never stop trying to make it better. John founded Armadillo Willy’s BBQ in 1983 and still creates all the recipes used in our eight restaurants. John grew up in the Bay Area but has traveled all over Texas eating barbecue and claims to have eaten in more Texas BBQ Joints than any native!
