My family has gone to Cathy’s Bakery for years and my sister and I pretty much grew up eating her crispy sponge cake. So when it was time for my wedding, this was definitely the first bakery on the list. We ordered a three-tiered sponge cake with fresh strawberry and mango filling. I was a little worried because the way I wanted my cake decorated(a simple, «rustic» style to go with the rest of the wedding décor) was a bit different from how the other cakes in the store looked. I sent their head baker Mary a few pictures of how I wanted to frosting to look; she told us she would practice a few times with the pictures as guidance. With the addition of some lavender and olive leaves from our wonderful florist(flowersbyladybuggs), the cake turned out absolutely beautiful and exactly as I had pictured. So please do not feel like you are limited to the style of decorations they have on display in the bakery, because Mary is amazingly talented and will really work with you to create the cake of your dreams. They also delivered the cake to our venue miles away and perfectly on time for our reception. And of course, the taste of the cake(the fluffiest sponge cake you can imagine, fresh fruit, and whipped cream) was unbeatable and we got so many questions from our wedding guests about what bakery we had used. Thank you again Cathy’s and Mary for being such an important part of our wedding!

This place has limited cake, it is cash only. I bought the mango cake and really the pricing for that little cake was expensive. It was light and Like a Chinese cake. It is suppose to be a famous place«how?»

The bigger lady messed up my son’s birthday cake and even though I already paid for my son’s cake she said I did not. Then she writes the name wrong and happy birthday backwards, didn’t want to give me the toy topper after arguing and wanted me to pay extra. Wtf cathys… I have a paid receipt to pickup the cake. The lady keeps going on telling other customers how bad was so asked for a refund… Then she’s like take the cake.

I like the bread – Cheese and Ham bread and pineapple bread. I feel that their bread is better than J.J.‘s Bakery. They are fresh and tasty. Although I am always on the low-carbs diet, I just can’t reject this bakery’s product. Cakes are very good too! My weekly must-do-routine is buying a bag of different bread for my breakfast. One more good thing about this bakery– with only $ 10 you can take home a big bag of varieties of bread! Applause for its high-quality bakery and affordable price!

Good pastries, but very rude service from the grumpy old cashier. Service in their Arcadia location is better.

We ordered a ¼ sheet strawberry cake for my grandma’s birthday. Their cakes are spongy and moist and FRESH. I love how they layer their strawberries. Each of them are thinly sliced, ripe, and sweet. Their whipped cream is pretty good too. For the taste, it’s well worth the price. $ 25 for a ¼ sheet. My only thing is their English writing. I think it doesn’t look nice. They are also known for their crispy cake. It’s pretty good, but too plain for my taste. One last thing, some of their cake designs are so cute. We have had the teapot cake and the«long life bun» shaped cake and they turned out great. Don’t know the price ranges for those, but the taste and design should be worth it.

My coworker introduced me to this cake so today the 1÷3÷16 decided to come buy the sponge cake one review wrote 7 days ago that it was 13.50 and when I came in the lady said it was $ 15.00.I wonder why to me she charged me so much. This review is about customer service, there sponge cake was delicious. would rather go elsewhere not worth my time to get ripped off.

I have moved out of SGV but this is the place that keeps calling to me. Their $ 13.50 sponge cake with a layer of filo in the middle is so simple yet so good. At the end of the day all I want is a nice piece of cake without all the added calories from frosting that I would scrape off anyway. To make up for all the saved calories — I eat the entire thing by myself =)

We were at a restaurant across the street and the person who was supposed to bring cake showed up without one. We panicked because we didn’t not want to have cake to celebrate my uncle’s 60th birthday. A quick Unilocal search showed this was close by. We walked in 10 min before closing and bought 28 inch cheesecakes and candles for a whopping $ 23. The cheesecake did not taste like normal cheesecake, but we found ourselves strangely addicted to it. Someone compared it to a moist blondie, which I felt was a pretty spot on comparison. Thanks for saving the day Cathy’s!

Came here today to get a Thanksgiving cake for our family’s Thanksgiving dinner. We were able to find a cute looking cake with a turkey as its shape. Found that to be super creative. However in terms of service, do NOT expect much. They are NOT friendly at all. We basically come here twice a year, once during Thxgiving and once during Christmas when we need cakes.

Love their Crispy Cake — Su Pi Dan Go… but their individual cake slice sucks! I got a Strawberry cake slice to go, and for $ 3 — not worth it. The top portion was good. The strawberry flavor and icing was great and not overly sweet. However, the last two bottom layers were dried and gross. I do not recommend this slice. Bleh! Also, comes in a small brown paper bag with no fork inside.

Three words! Crispy Sponge Cake Cathy’s specialty is their crispy sponge cake sheets cutting into 20 or so pieces! This cake is made of 2 giant slices of sponge bread with crispy napoleon like crisps in the middle… soft first bite until you reach the slightly crunch middle! As for their bread. tried a few but wasn’t overly impressed… as for service, let’s just say that this is a traditional Asian owned joint… want service, go somewhere else… Just a simple in and out bakery to get my sponge cake! Tip: Enjoy the sponge cake ASAP! 1) The top of the cake turns hard overnight! 2) Crispy filling will become un-crispy overnight! So just enjoy this delicious cake early and quick!

Crispy sponge cake!!! OMG so yummy! It’s not your usual cake, its basically 2 layers of sponge cake with a thin layer of sweet cream on each side and in the middle crispy filo layers. I love the simplicity of this cake. I guess it’s a pretty traditional cake in the chinese culture. Not many asian bakeries make this also! I think the price is $ 12 for a box!

I reserved a half sheet cake for my grandmother’s birthday at Cathy’s yearly. It is fresh and tasty, and it’s so affordable for such a large cake. I’ve always default coming here to get her cake. Usually, their designs are well done. HOWEVER, the design for the cake this year was so sloppy this year. The swirls on the sides were so uneven. I could have done a better job and that says a lot by a person with uneven shaky hand. Please, please PLEASE stop doing those uneven swirls on the sides! I looked through other cakes on this Unilocal page and noticed that a lot of the cakes have uneven sloppy swirls on the sides of cakes. I am not imagining how sloppy the cakes are. Ugh. Hope next year’s cake will be better.

Why I love this place: You get a ¼ sheet cake of crispy cake for only $ 14. It’s delicious, simple, and addicting. It’s honestly a crispy layer of phyllo dough smashed between two layers of lightly creamed sponge cake. It is the most simple cake yet with a great complexity in texture. It’s cheap and quick. However, I do not recommend having them write anything on your cake as they seem to do a hasty sloppy job. You’re better off buying plastic decorations. Overall, if you’re having a party or potluck and need something to bring to share. This takes the cake!

Bought $ 24 of the taro crispy sponge cake(1÷17÷15) for my husband because he loved it so much from the last time he had it but this time it was such a big disappointment! He had one slice and the taro was sour. He thought maybe it was just that slice and he tried another one but it’s still sour. He told me about it and I tried some myself. Indeed, it was sour!!! Would of brought it back but I live an hour away so it’s not even worth my drive back! All going into the trash!

This place is great for those who need some cakes fast and economical. I always come here and get cakes between $ 15-$ 35, depending on all fluff and extras of the occasion. Parking is usually not a problem but beware it’s cash only!

Once I saw one of those cheeseburger cakes, I knew I had to buy it for someone I knew. That cake was great, fresh(we had to pre-order it of course), looked wonderful and was super tasty. So why am I giving the bakery only three stars? Well, the next time I got cake from this bakery, it was very bland. If I were to compare the two blindfolded, like in those soda commercials, I would have thought they were from different bakeries.

Pros: Fresh mango cake is a must try! Soft Chinese sponge cake with whipped cream and sweet fresh mango inside n out. It was so delish my BF niece and I had 2 slices. Happy birthday Jill:) Cons: They always run out of ham and cheese toast. Small selection of bake goods. Cash only! You can call in advance to check if its available and they will save it for you.

January 19, 2014 I’m so used to buying cakes from 85 Degrees, Diamond Bakery, JJ Bakery, NiNi and KiKi Bakery, but Cathy’s Bakery… wouldn’t have thought of coming here if it weren’t for my mom and siblings. Well, mom’s big 50th birthday was on the 20th(aka MLK day) and my brother wanted to get something different for our mom for her birthday. Mom did say that she doesn’t want a birthday cake, so he thought… HEY! WHYDON’T WEGETTHEPHYLLOCAKE! It’s not frosted with milk cream and such, so [to us] it’s not a cake-cake. My sister was awesome enough to drive to Cathy’s before it closes at 8pm. We wanted to keep this a secret, so my brother asked my mom if she wanted to go to the casino at 6:30pm. Sister brought back the cake, and it was just as good as we remembered it. Love Phyllo! In the end, mom loved her cake, along with a fake dud cake and my freshly made bread pudding. HAPPYBIRTHDAYMOMMY!
