Established in 1989.

After completing his surgical residency on the East Coast, Dr. Marino moved out to California and established the office originally at 430 Davis Ct. in Golden Gateway Commons in San Francisco. The main office moved into its new location in May 2009. Dr. Marino also has offices in Sacramento and Novato. He specializes in medicine, surgery, and sports medicine of the foot and ankle with sub specialty in Arthroscopic Ankle and Foot surgery. He gets referrals from all over northern California.

Dr. Marino is possibly the best doctor I have ever had. Two years ago, I rolled my ankle at the Tough Mudder and foolishly decided to finish the 10 miles to the base of the mountain (making the injury worse). Over the course of the past 2 years, I saw 3 doctors, went through PT, and had countless x-rays…everyone told me I had a bad sprain and it would take 2 years to heal.
This year, I experienced extreme swelling, aching, and my gait and posture started to suffer. It was getting worse. After finding a specialist and demanding an MRI, I was finally told that I not only broke my ankle that day… I tore a ligament and a tendon. I was then told I waited too long and there was nothing to be done due to my age and limited options for surgery (I should add that I am mid-​40s). I continued to search for an ankle specialist and found Dr. Marino. After looking at my MRI and assessing the situation he assured me he could fix not only my ankle… but my big toe which was suffering from arthritis. He said my age was not a factor (yet!) and that with his help, he said my chances for a full recovery were quite good (no guarantees… but very positive outlook).
Dr. Marino performed a very intense ankle and toe surgery in late November. I was back on my feet a month later… and now… two months later, I am back to hiking, swimming, biking, and pilates. My ankle is no longer swollen and for the first time in 2 years, I do not have pain on a daily basis. I am amazed and delighted at the outcome and while I know it will take a few more months to heal, I am well on my way to a normal active lifestyle.
I highly recommend Dr. Marino for ankle and foot issues… and if you are needing a skilled surgeon who can do what other doctors can’t — look no further. He will change your life… he changed mine for the better!

I give a star to Dr. Marino, who got some custom orthotics done for me.
I give the worse review to his staff. I got my orthotics done February 2014. Over a year later and I have yet to be reimbursed for a deposit I put down to get everything started. The process has taken so long partially because my insurance, United Healthcare, went head-​to-​head with Dr. Marino’s office, stating orthotics weren’t covered by myinsurance. This is counter to what I was told by Marino’s staff.
Here’s what you need to know:
— The office outsources their billing to an office in Central California. This means that if you’re trying to talk to someone about say, why you haven’t gotten your deposit back, you’ll end up having to deal with an ignorant staff in the main office and a third party elsewhere. In my experience, the outsourcing only fostered confusion and lack of efficiency.
— By far, the worse person to deal with is Audrey, the office manager. I don’t know how many times I called and she’d say she’d look into my file and call me back, and simply never did. She doesn’t seem to get anything done in a timely manner.
Honestly I wish I had never gone to this office. I would stay away unless you’re paying cash.

I have had a few appointments with Dr. Marino so far and I’m really pleased with the care I’ve received, his patience and willingness to answer questions, even unrelated to the reason for my visits. His staff is friendly and courteous and have made me feel welcomed. I’d definitely recommend giving him a try… I don’t know why I put off seeing a podiatrist for so long, it’s much better than I’d expected.

Dr. Marino himself is a nice and competent doctor. What he lacks in being thorough he makes up for in being ridiculously quick.
I had a tremendous amount of trouble with their front desk. They ended up charging me over $ 750 for something that should have cost me less than $ 100 (three office visits and a pair of orthotics). I actually had to go so far as to have my insurance company directly and explain that they should have been billed for almost everything. I was left with the impression that they were hustling me out of my money, but it could have just been massive confusion on their part.
A month later I was reimbursed. A week after that, I got another bill for an appointment I never made or went to.

He’s the BEST, I’m a big fan of Dr. Marino. He always makes you feel as comfortable as possible (cause I’m such a big baby when it comes to pain). His office location is a 5 minute walk from my work, which made it totally convenient for me. I had a bunionectomy on my left foot. The surgery and back to work time was 3 weeks. Now it’s time for my right foot to be done and Dr. Marino is the doc I will call on to take care of it.

I am a big fan of Dr. Marino. I have been to him a few times, and he has always been helpful, knowledgeable, personable, and cured all of my issues. The first thing I went to him for was a running injury that I had. I am completely obsessed with working out, and run 4 – 5 miles every day. If I can’t run, it really makes me unhappy. About a year ago, I started having this pain on the side of my left big toe. It would hurt to run, and would ache all night. I was starting to limp around, and didn’t know if it was the beginning stages of getting a bunion or not. I went to Dr. Marino, and he made me some special orthotics, which made the pain go away in just a few days. The next time I had to go to him was when I got a piece of glass in my foot at the «Opening Day» festivities in Tiburon. It must have been from the dock, where there was a bunch of broken glass. Although I had been wearing sandals, it was very clear by the next day that something big and sharp was somewhere in my heel. Dr. Marino had me come into his office that same day (he somehow fit me in), numbed my foot, and took it out. I was back to normal that night.
I also had a friend that had bunion surgery by Dr. Marino, and she was very pleased by the outcome.
I have had some bad experiences with doctors throughout my life. On the contrary, Dr. Marino is a very detail oriented, thorough, and compassionate doctor from what I have seen. I would highly recommend him to my friends and family.

I agree with the last reviewer — Dr. Merino is my foot savior as well!!!
Last year I was unable to walk and had to give up walking my dogs, walking on the beach, hiking, all the things I love to do. My foot pain was so intense, it took over all aspects of my life.
I was referred to Dr. Merino because of his expertise in complicated surgeries. I put my future in his hands and so very glad I made the right decision. After an eight hour surgery where Dr. Merino practically rebuilt my foot — and 10 months of recovery and rehab — I’m now back to walking a couple of miles without pain.
Dr. Merino was incredible. He invested the time in doing the surgery the right way — not the quick way. He also told me that it would be a long recovery time and what post surgery would involve. He was on the money — except I think I have done better than expected!
Thanks to Dr. Merino I have my quality of life back and continuing to work to build back my muscles and endurance to be even better than before my foot problems.

Unbelievable. A doctor — who is NEVER available to speak with me regarding this money I supposedly owe his office — finally takes the time to respond and it’s on Unilocal and it’s full of lies and it makes claims (I was turned down for a credit card? Nope.) that are untrue — but if they were true — would be a complete invasion of my confidentiality. There are plenty of great doctors in town — do yourself a favor and never go to this doctor or entrust his office with your personal information. For my part, I will be investigating what steps — if any — I have regarding filing complaints against this doctor with the insurance company (ies) and the AMA. Dr. Marino — you should be ashamed of how you operate your practice and treat patients.

Dr. Marino my foot savior! Let me put it this way, he has practically rearranged both of my feet from goblin ugly to cinderellaesque. I started with my right foot almost 5 years ago then just had my left one done. Hammertoes, bunionectomies, all kinds of things I can’t pronounce on both sides. Major surgery — WHOOH they were ugly, but he worked magic.
He is very caring and sympathetc and really wants to make sure you are as comfortable as possible.
His front office was helpful working with my HR dept with the paperwork that needed to be filed as well as EDD. I was dissapointed that their charged to complete the Disability/​HR paperwork ($ 60) was not covered by insurance and thus out of pocket.
I am actually going to miss him, but it’s nice to be cured!

After a night out dancing I was experiencing numbness in one of my toes which was affecting my balance and comfort. It persisted, and being both a runner and a woman who loves shoes I was rather alarmed. Enter Dr. Marino, as referred by my insurance provider. He was able to schedule a comfortable time within a week even though he works two office locations.
The only reason this is a four star review is that the day of I received a call from the receptionist asking to reschedule as the doctor had a lecture that conflicted with my appointment time. Although I consider the circumstance very unprofessional, I told her I would reschedule if necessary and she proceeded to verify. I never received a confirmation call afterward and was unclear whether I still had an appointment or not. When I arrived at the office I was indeed still on, but waited over a half hour for 10 minutes of the doctor’s time.
Luckily, this also means a quick diagnosis. Dr. Marino is very personable and knowledgeable. The majority of his practice is sports medicine related, but he approached my concerns with every level of attentiveness. After analyzing the problem he pulled up a 3D computer model of the foot with every system color coded and drawn in great detail, able to be turned on or off to isolate information. As an architect this was a huge bonus! He then explained that I should recover within 6 weeks and even told me I could continue wearing high heels (just not the pair that did the damage) as often as I wished!
Sure enough, in just 4 weeks all was back to normal. Now that’s a visit to the doctor that will set your feet dancing again.

Dr. Marino did a great job on my ankle. I was referred to him by Jenny Sanders. I had had chronic spraining of my ankle for about ten years. I had seen a multitude of different doctors, all of whom recommended radical surgery (e.g. taking tendons from other parts of my body; breaking and reseting foot bones). Marino recommended a less invasive Brostrom and my ankle is finally tight again. No more walking down the street and steeping on a pebble and blowing out my ankle. He did a great technical job.
I also found his staff to be high quality (e.g. Elaine (sp?) and Audrey) — they follow-​up on billing issues, get you the appropriate information, and help you change appointments.

I was referred to Dr Marino for help dealing with multiple sports injuries to both ankles. He and his office staff have been great. He was extremely thorough and patient with the pre surgery evaluations. He made sure we knew exactly what was going on before opening my ankle up. Even though i am a EMT and Web research junkie, he answered all my questions, did not rush into doing the surgery, and made me feel very comfortable with the procedure. Did i mention that his office staff is really cool? They have been really helpful with all the paperwork hoops and hoopla
His predictions of what the recovery would be be like have been quite accurate as well.
He knows what he is doing and seems happy to be doing it. I would recommend him.

Dr Marino is a very nice person, easy to talk to, friendly. I went to see him after running the san diego marathon, he diagnosed that I partially tore my plantar facia, told me to rest a couple weeks, and then created custom orthotics for me to use when I run that caused new pain and problems with my feet and ankles. He had me walk across a pad on the floor that diagnosed how your feet hit the ground, and maybe this is how a lot of doctors prescribe orthotics, but the orthotics I got as a result of this diagnosis caused more pain in my feet and ankles. When I came for a follow up visit he said this was normal and was just my feet getting used to my new running stride, but after a couple months I moved on to another podiatrist, who I feel more properly and adequately addressed and solved the problem. Despite his convenient location I would not go back to Dr. Marino.

Dr. Marino has been great. I had an old snowboarding injury from 3 years ago, and I’d seen 3 different doctors and physical therapists about it. I had almost given up on getting it fixed when I found Dr. Marino. He diagnosed the problem after the 1st visit and MRI (ruptured ligament) and told me what type of surgery I’d need to fix it. Well, I went ahead with the surgery, and my ankle is in great shape! Dr. Marino did a great job. As an added bonus, his staff is extremely friendly, professional, and accommodating. I highly recommend Dr. Marino =)

Appointments not posted in his calendar. Twice. Waste of time and had to return at later dates for the appointments. Watch out for charges. He charged my insurance company over $ 300 for a leg brace that was under $ 50 on the manufacturer’s web site. I was never cured of the broken metatarsal bones, so he just blew me off.
My advice: see an orthopedic surgeon for any foot problems other than in ingrown toenail. Do not see a podiatrist for a broken bone.

Came in with a sprained ankle and terrible pain. Doctor spent about 10 minutes total with me and didn’t even take x-​rays. He said it was very minor sprain and didn’t even prescribe pain killers. I went to a different doctor after that, who, discovered some complications I had to undergo a much more serious treatment. Although my ankle is not the same aver since. If only this doctor noticed the problems on my first visit may be I could be in a better shape now.

After competing in my first triathlon, I got a foot infection which Dr. Marino was able to treat effectively. Upon later visits, he helped me get fitted for custom orthotics which have substantially improved shin-​splint discomfort I was experiencing from all the training I was doing.
Dr. Marino’s office was a convenient walk from the Financial District, and I would recommend him to others. My only complaint was the feeling that he scheduled unnecessary follow-​on visits just to run-​up his tab with my insurance company. I ended up canceling my last follow-​up which seemed unnecessary.
