Tony’s Market & Liquor

I went here on Saturday in a rush before a party. I needed to buy the host’s favorite whiskey, which is a slightly less common scotch. I had remembered they had a larger selection than the other bodegas, and I was correct — they had the scotch. As I hadn’t bought it before, I didn’t know how much I should expect to pay. She charged me $ 80 for the 12 year.
The next day I stopped in at K&L liquors on 4^th and Brannan. They charge $ 45 dollars for the same exact scotch.
I expect a $ 10 markup for convenience at places like this. not a $ 35 dollar markup. Horrifying.

I bought 6 bottles of wine from here… and they were all bad! The store has no climate control and is always open to the elements… so no wonder the wine went bad. Disgusting and a complete waste of $ 100. I literally poured it all down the sink. They have a very nice array of whiskeys and scotches, but given that they basically have the store open to the elements at all times, I would buy your expensive liquor elsewhere.

Wtf. An ice cream cost me $ 5.99+tax. This shop is incredible expensive and black heart!!!

Two Teachers accosted at Tony’s Market for browsing. My partner and I are teachers and were house sitting in the mission district during the holidays. We took muni to the dog patch area to buy cheese at La Froomagerie Cheese shop (5 stars) for a dinner we were having for friends on New Year’s Eve. On our return we jumped off the bus to purchase wine at Tony’s and after a minute of browsing we felt the wine was over priced.
We started our walk up 24^th street when an angry man stopped up and addressed us with hostile words. Our immediate reaction was that we were engaged with an emotionally deranged individual. He got with in four inches of my partner’s face and yelled at him to back away from her. I realized he may be the owner of Tony’s Market. We went back into the store and he demanded to look into the pocket of my shirt. He accused my partner of putting an item in my shirt pocket. Yes she did, she pulled out my bus transfer sip because she thought I would loose it. I told this man we took nothing and how we were only in the wine section by the window. He got more hostile and the situation was getting more volatile and we walked out before he got physical.
I am astonished how a shop owner or clerk could react with such incivility two two teachers browsing in his market. Or even how I could steal an item and put it in my shirt pocket like a bottle of wine.
Caution, if you enter the market keep your hands in plain sight at all times so you are not accused of theft and the clerk or owner gets in your face and you have to tell him to not grab you.

I needed to find Cutty Sark scotch, which very few liquor stores seem to carry, and a small bottle of Grey Goose mandarine vodka in time for my family’s visit for Thanksgiving. Tony’s was able to special order both for me and had them ready for pickup at the store within 24 hours the day before Thanksgiving. It wasn’t cheap, but the great customer service and timeliness made it worth it!

The best Bodega on 24^th street. Diverse selection of beer (including limited runs), liquor and wine. Great snacks, well priced kitchen staples, and the staff is incredibly friendly. Oh, and it also houses Pal’s takeaway.
Worth moving closer to 24^th and Hampshire just to have Tony’s as your go to corner store.

The wine guy knows his stuff! Wanna impress your boozjie friends with a killer, affordable rosé? Check. Wanna get a little something for yourself and like trying new wines? Nailed it. Definitely the best wine selection on the 24^th street strip and most cost just as much as the overpriced chuck grabbed in desperation from the corner store at midnight. Now if only they were open 24hrs…

Let me tell you about this unsung hero.
Largely known for being the place where Pal’s Takeaway used to operate from, Tony’s has a great lot to offer on its own. They have a huge wine and beer selection, and a lot of snacks to go with it – popcorn, cookies, deli meats. I even snagged a jar of Greek taramosalata here once. They also have a pretty good selection of ice cream. This is where I first discovered Three Twins, a locally produced organic ice cream brand. Get the lemon cookie flavor. You must try it! You’ll thank me later, I promise.
Tony’s is always clean, the staff is friendly, and it’s right around the corner from where I live. For a corner convenience store, I couldn’t ask for more. (Oh look, I rhymed!)

I love this place! BEST WINE SELECTION ANYWHERE! They offer a lot of small independent vineyards, that are really awesome. They have great chocolate selection too! They will always take the time to talk to you. They truly appreciate your business and are fun to deal with.

Tonys is one of the nicest things about my neighborhood. The owner is very sweet, and also concerned about making the store better and better. Pal’s Takeaway is awesome. So are the changes the owner is always making to the store– places to sit, new and exciting stock (artisanal beer!), fancy cookies!

Tony’s Market & Liquor: Came for Pal’s, stayed for Tony’s.
As a proud patron of Pal’s Takeaway, Tony’s Market has always been a part of my lunchtime routine without actually being a part of the routine. I’ve always seen it as «that one liquor store that somehow housed Pal’s». It was nothing more and nothing less. Luckily for me, a few days ago, I decided to take off my blinders and look around Tony’s while waiting for Pal’s.
Holy. Crap.
Clearly, I was a fool for ignoring all of Tony’s offerings: craft soda and pop, higher end beer and liquor, and all sorts of exotic snacks. Clearly, the man behind Tony’s thought long and hard about what to carry. For instance, Tony’s has more than half a dozen varieties of ginger ale/​beer. Can you say Dark & Stormy party? Or how about picking up a six pack of craft beer that doesn’t revolve around «drinkability»? Or maybe dip into their selection of finer wines if ambrosia tickles your fancy? Basically, this liquor store isn’t a liquor store. Maybe if the fine purveyors of libations at the other establishments on 24^th took a lesson from Tony’s, I wouldn’t be so hesitant to walk into their stores. I’d much rather be greeted by a selection of awesome, interesting beers than a 36 pack of Bud and Swisher’s.

24^th Street isn’t lacking in terms of liquor stores, but Tony’s is far and away the best of the bunch. Start with the outside. While most liquor stores don’t bother to take down the security gates over their windows, even when open, Tony’s owner invested in nice roll down doors that leave all the windows clear and welcoming when the store is open. Inside, the store is kept very clean and well-​lit. The owner is incredibly friendly and helpful, and the other people that work there have been great to me, as well.
Their selection of beer and wine is fantastic, and while they don’t have a massive array of hard liquor, they stuff they do have is generally better quality.
They also do a good job with all the non-​alcohol provisions, from ice cream and popcorn to bacon, toilet paper and cereal. They even have a nice little selection of cheese and cured meats.
The kicker, of course, is Pal’s Takeaway, the specialty sandwich shop located inside. Only available during the day, but well worth it.
Whereas other stores on 24^th focus on blunt wraps and 40s, Tony’s focuses on being a nice place to shop.
