Local Cellar

Good selection of local wine and beer as well as some spirits. The wine selection is definitely different than most of the usual stuff you see around. I have had some good wines and beer from here.
The staff is also very friendly everytime I have gone in. It is kins of off from the main paths travelled in the mission, but you should stop in if nearby.

So happy to have this corner store just blocks from our place. While some of the items seem to be just a bit over-​priced, overall the prices they offer are fair and reasonable… even for items with a higher sticker price, it’s worth the «convenience fee» in my mind. The place is not huge, but it offers a great selection of quality liquor choices and reasonably priced wine and beer.
I love that their focus is on «local» products. They particularly do a great job selecting and featuring local wines. We were pleasantly surprised to find that they carry Field Recordings wine, as my husband and I have been on the look-​out for this reasonably priced, but quite tasty full-​bodied red (if you haven’t tried their Cabernet Franc, I’d suggest doing so… a pretty decent wine for the reasonable $ 17−18/bottle price). We’ve popped in so many wine stores during our strolls through SF on the weekends, but this is one of the very few places we’ve found that carries that wine.
They also offer a small selection of other «snack goods»…I recommend trying their ghost pepper sausage that is on display on the counter. Perfect amount of heat and very tasty.
The staff is very friendly and always very welcoming. We are so happy to have this store in our neighborhood, and hope it does well so it’s able to stick around despite the outrageous rent prices of SF!

Very friendly and helpful staff, with a decent well-​curated selection of wines for this rather small shop. The prices were surprisingly reasonable. Glad they are in the neighborhood!

Good selection of Californian/​local wine and spirits. They actually keep JARDESCA Apertiva in the cooler so big plus for that!

We recently moved into the ‘hood and I love this shop. Every time I go in, the staff is knowledgable, warm, and helpful. I totally nerd-​out on their selection of small, local wines and spirits, most of which is priced in the ‘everyday drinker’ range. I’ve purchased many bottles here (wine, ciders, spirits), and every single one of them has delivered, so it’s clear they’re putting some effort into their selection. They’ve earned my loyalty.

Time: 1:19pm/68°F sunny
Purpose: Thought I would make a second visit before doing a review. Put place up more than a year ago and it has 3 reviews ever since. Not sure why?
Set-​up: Corner store located in a mostly quiet neighborhood surrounded by more laundromats than eateries/​cafes. The shop carries mostly craft beers and wines no food just snack bites. Inside all wooden paneling with a older run down look and feel. Upon entering you’ll notice cement floors with rugs. Deli case converted for storage with blackboard menu covering the front. Wooden wine shelve holding bottles two deep. Inner back four door vintage cold fridge and another stand alone for white wines. Couple of barrels here and there use for display purposes. Feels like it was a small corner deli of yester years.
Staff: A guy name Ben, older early 50s. Was a pleasure to work with. Told him I came here last year, but forgot what I bought before. We went through each section of the store with him explaining the craft beers and wines. I narrow it down by telling him I wanted local beers.
Cleanliness: Grade A, in a business were cans and bottles are its main business. Even little dust or particle would still be consider clean. Everything is either package, bottle, or in cans. Run down looking, but its the uniqueness of the place that brings in a value too.
Bagging It: 6pk Drakes $ 9.99 and a Regrained Eat Beer IPA bar $ 3.25. Drakes of San Leandro IPA was just your local beer. Now the bar really had me curious as to will I be drunk? Does it contain beer? In the end just think of it as a Nature Valley granola bar with grains left over from brewing. Half pieces of almonds embedded on bar gives it this nutty texture. Flavor wise never had anything like it. Whole bar only 180 cal./ 16g of sugar and 5g protein.
Products/​Services: Local beers/​wines, snacks, mixed case, 6pk, case purchase, wine/​beer kegs available, tote bags, 10% of solid or mixed cases, distilleries, lemon/​limes. Manual/​brochure and articles on wine. Most wine are under $ 15 a bottle. Over 30+ microbrewery brands and 14+ wine brands represented. Takes plastics, check-​in with Unilocal and get 10% off case.
Punch Lines: Residential neighborhood, corner shop, mostly local brands or in state, inexpensive, knowledgeable, friendly, special bargain, budget watchers, wood paneling, calm vibe, devotees, kitschy décor, hard to find brands, street parking.
Tradeoffs: Since most wines are listed $ 15 or below. For those hovering around $ 17 – 18 just $ 2 – 3 over may not get their limelight here. This resulting you to go elsewhere.
Final Thoughts: The shop offers a good selection of local and regional microbrewery/​wine/​distilleries. Great for people on budget that may want to host dinner without breaking the bank. Not too shabby of a deal here, are others around, but if your budget doesn’t allow you to go any further. This is a good neighborhood alternative to two buck chuck, IMO.

Given the excellent quality of many shops around town (Coit Liquor, Noe Valley Wine Merchants…), I was very disappointed by the service at Local Cellar. I came in one evening to check out the beer situation. The shopkeeper and his friends were drinking wine and hanging out, and they ignored me in such a way that I felt I was awkwardly interrupting their party. The person working at the shop appeared to have very rudimentary knowledge of the available beers, and he was completely clueless about sours. Even so, I ended up buying one of the stocked sours after he pretty much encouraged me not to purchase what he essentially thought was an odd, overpriced beer. Okay then. The inventory was alright and I would probably give this another try to see if customer service has improved with more knowledgable and friendlier staff. But honestly if I didn’t live in the neighborhood I would never return. There are just too many better options throughout the Bay.
