Toasties

This sandwich shop has CLOSED, didn’t last very long. This location seems jinxed, not good for business. There’s another shop still open in West Portal. Maybe customers in this area prefer complete meals rather than sandwiches. This type of place would do well in the FiDi.
But I don’t think that the crab melt was that great, I preferred any of the meat sandos with extra avocado (+ $ 0.75). I frequented their original location a few blocks away on Irving street (now Perilla). I still have their frequent diner card.

I ordered the turkey avocado. There was barely any avocado and the turkey tasted like prepacked deli slices from Safeway. It didn’t taste bad but it was not what I was expecting. The bread was probably the best part. It was warm and fresh, delicious.
They were out of fries so I got onion rings. I agree with previous reviews that they are like the frozen kind. But they were decent.
I don’t think I’ll be back. And where were the crepes? They have it written on the window but none on the menu.

Five stars for their signature crab melt!
If you don’t get this… you’re kinda not experiencing the amazing that this delicious, juicey, cheesy sandwich holds. It’s warm ciabatta bread with this garlic mayonnaise, artichoke hearts, crab salad, and with jack cheese oozing on top… let the sandwich sit like 5 – 10 minutes before you eat it and the ciabatta soaks the bread and holey smokes… it’s like crack. LOVE LOVE LOVE the crab melt. Too afraid to try the other sandwiches because I have a feeling I’ll be disappointed. Spend the 10 bucks on this bad boy… it’s the business.

Since I was so disappointed about the Ulloa location not having garlic curly fries, I had to visit the Irving location to redo it. I actually haven’t been back since they moved to the new location. Freakin’ A… they had specials on all of their sandwiches… the crab melt was only $ 7.95 compared to the $ 9.75 that I paid at the other location (the other one came with a free can of soda/​water but definitely not worth $ 2!). Anyway, my boyfriend and I shared the grilled pork sandwich, crab melt and the garlic curly fries.
I am my half of the grilled pork sandwich first and it was to die for… the pork is very juicy and well marinated. I had the crab melt after that but it wasn’t that good because it got cold already (note to self: eat the crab melt first next time for optimal yumminess). But alas… I got garlic curly fries to go with my sammies!

After long resenting this place for awkwardly re-​purposing the space left by Café Gratitude, I finally wandered in here midday on a Sunday after shopping at the farmer’s market.
They made an okay sandwich, but no WAY was it worth the $ 9 total! The vegetarian options are meager. The sandwich I had was not remarkable in any way. Honestly, Even Ike’s — which I used to live a half-​block from and proudly patronized before the hipsters found it and caused 3 hour wait times at a sandwich shop — is only occasionally justifiable for a $ 10 sammy!
But I digress. This place is nothing great. They make a mediocre sandwich. Like so many Inner Sunset businesses, they’ve completely mismanaged space. Perhaps they’ve just moved into a space larger than they need, but there are whole regions of the kitchen that are unused. Admittedly, this is a sprawling space, but most is squandered. The quaint pass-​through and the rear dining room and lovely outdoor patio are going completely unused! I can’t imagine that rent’s free, so this is just a gross mis-​management!
So sad. This space needs to be occupied by a nice, charming restaurant again, not just some nameless, mediocre sandwich shop, taking up space (likely not enough to make rent!). However, for the time being, until the management gets a clue or goes under, such seems to be the fate of this space…
Ugh! …if walls could talk… then maybe this cheap Togo’s knock-​off would make a decent sandwich and have more than 5 customers at a time. Until then, I think I’ll save my $ 8-​$ 10 sandwich-​splurge for Ike’s!

I eat here often. In fact usually after a volunteer gardening session in Golden Gate Park I automatically walk up here to grab a sandwich and a cold drink. Toasties is less than a two block walk from Golden Gate Park. I like sitting in the covered patio section (
) in the back of the restaurant. There are steps in the patio leading up into an outside garden. I’ve never visited that garden, but I’ve often seen other patrons eating their sandwiches up there. There’s a small restroom in the covered patio area also that’s usually pretty clean where I can go in and wash the dirt away from underneath my fingernails and clean the dirt residue off my face before eating.
Many of the sandwiches at Toasties are assembled very much the same way with lettuce, tomato, red onions, mayo, mustard and olive oil vinaigrette served hot on a Napa Valley hoagie roll. Besides the few that I have provided images of there are at least another dozen choices to choose from. The menu includes salads and sides such as onion rings, regular Fries (
) and Curly Garlic Fries (
) plus crepes as well as eight flavors of Mitchell’s ice cream. The fries are of the shoestring variety and the curly garlic fries have lots of minced garlic.
A meal here usually leaves me pretty full and satisfied. The service is fast and friendly, and often if I’m already relaxing in the patio area the nice young lady who works the counter will bring all my food on a big metal platter back to me.

I have gotten the grilled pork and the chicken pesto here.
The chicken pesto is okay, it doesn’t have a lot of flavoring like the grilled pork. The grilled pork is more juicer too.
Also, I love the bread that they use. Toasty and soft.
It is a bit pricey, but at the moment they are having some specials on their sandwich. It’s a little less than the normal price, but I think they may have messed up on some of their pricing though.
I like the seating in the back, it’s indoors with lots of lighting.
And they have stamp cards!

Ordered the Chicken pesto, onion rings, and a vanilla milk shake…$ 16.50…whoa.
The chicken was tough and sinewy mostly dark meet… yuck. The onion rings were from a costco type store (frozen). The milk shake was good but came in a small cup and cost $ 4.50…I would go to Mel’s for a milkshake instead.
For my taste and money I would go to either Ted’s or Ike’s by far much better sandwiches and sides.

I ordered a crab melt for pickup yesterday. It was nothing special but nothing awful either. The bread was awesome, but something about the crab just didn’t seem right, it tasted off, and i couldn’t eat more than half the sandwich because I feared spending my Easter with my face in the toilet bowl. Luckily, food poisoning was not the ending result so I can’t give them too bad of a review,

The sandwiches are pretty tasty, price is good.
I’ve tried the turkey avocado and pork sandwich.
All sandwiches come with a free soda or fruit.
Is very convenient for people who get off at the west portal station.
Not so convenient for parking on weekends.
Really small little joint, not too many seats.

If you’re looking for a really good crab melt, I highly suggest you hit up Toasties. I haven’t had one in over a year and a half, and its deliciousness is still on my mind. I splurged for my 30^th birthday and got one, and I could only finish HALF of it (much to my fiancé’s fancy, as he got the other half!), which was more than enough. The creaminess of the crab salad, the avocado, cheese, lettuce, *drool* my mouth is watering just thinking about it!
Since I work in Golden Gate Park, I eat lunch at Toasties at least a couple times a month. I love their bread, and they are so quick! Plus, free soda with any sandwich purchase, how can you beat that?! Their curly fries are the bomb and the owners are super nice.
I’m happy they moved to a new and bigger location that has a nice covered patio in the back. The old place on Irving was way too cramped.
So if you happen to be in Golden Gate Park one weekend checking out the sites, if you’re looking for a quick and yummy bite, stop at Toasties, you won’t be disappointed! :)

My friend took me here after being 2 month away from the city. I was actually craving for some Roxie’s but, since toasties was the closest sandwich spot, my friend suggested and took me here.
When I first got here, I’m like this place looks pretty chill. There was a lot of menu selection but, I don’t know. sandwich that cost about $ 7 — $ 10 is pretty damn expensive. I end up ordering the Turkey Avocado, and oh my goodness, I just fell in love with it! The sandwich was huge, filling, not sloppy at all and of course, it was delicious! Definitely coming back for sure =D

Finally, got to sink my teeth into one of your famous crab melts!
Verdict: ABSOLUTELY huge and delicious!
I noticed a few of you complaining about the cheese to crab ratio being a bit overwhelming, well I’m not sure if this was just a really good day but I found the opposite to be true. The crab melt itself is the priciest item on the menu at nearly $ 10 bucks. But it’s a good once in a while treat, plus they do offer various other sandwiches which are in the average price range. probably not nearly as good though ;)
The garlic fries here are also pretty tasty and compliment the crab melt quite well!
One complaint: Wish they stayed open later, at least until 9pm. I think closing at 7pm every day including weekends is a bit soon.
Other than that. I shall be back!

What happened to the free Wi-​fi???
Toasties was the place I go to after school for a quick bite to eat. I used to come here all the time because of their free wifi next door but unfortunately it isn’t available anymore. (So sad :[)
They have excellent pastrami sandwiches. Huge and filling, and they are definitely not skimpy on their meats!
I also like their crab melts but be sure to tell them to go easy on the cheese because the cheese tends to overwhelm the crab so you cant taste any of it at all.
There’s also stamp cards available at the counter where you buy 10 sandwiches and get one free!

WOW just WOW! Ever since I saw this place listed on the back of Phở Phouc Quoc’s menu on Irving street, I wanted to try it. The menu sounded amazing and I am a sucker for good sandwiches. So I made the trek to Toastie’s and after a few visits and trying the crab melt, grilled pork and grilled ribeye steak sandwich, my favorite is the grilled ribeye steak sandwich. The sandwich has a Vietnamese flavor to it since it is owned by PPQ from what I have read.
The sandwich has the perfect crunch and it is not too hard or not too soft. It is the perfect texture for my braces and the flavors make me salivate. I literally want to drive to San Francisco and get me two sandwiches from this place. Did I mention they have a frequent buyer card which I have now 7 stamps on lol. Their fries, especially the garlic fries are yummy. Service is great and this place doesn’t hurt the wallet either. I cannot wait to come back and this has to be one of my favorite finds in 2009 so far.

Crabmelt and garlic fries. That’s all that is important. The crab melt is fully loaded with crab, and is O-​M-​G GOOOOOODD. It is a little heavy, so watch out for the food coma! The steak sandwich is also very goood. It may seem expensive for these sandwiches, but I think it’s worth it… Crabmelt is about $ 9, and the steak sandwich is about $ 9 also I think. I usually share the crab melt and fries with someone else, and it’s good enough to fill up til dinner time. You can also add a mango milkshake to your lunch – it’s made w ith real Mitchell’s ice cream! YuMmMM
The place isn’t really fancy, it’s more of a lunch place.

I enjoyed the crab melt, maybe a bit too much garlic but this toasty was quite tastey.
Quite nice that the fries are a free side and during the visit there, we had a nice show of Lion Dancers out front for Chinese New Years.
The cashier was courteous and nice and everything was done in a quick and timely manner. I will definitely come back to try the other toasties~

Overall, a good place for sandwiches… we ordered the crab melt and the grilled pork sandwich.
The crab melt probably was not the best I’ve ever had, but it’s good and tasty nonetheless. It is on a higher priced side, $ 9.25 for the sandwich. The cheese somewhat overpowered the crab IMO so I couldnt taste the crab all that much. They had a holiday special so they gave us a free soup with each sandwich we ordered, which was nice. We got the clam chowder and chicken noodle. Both soups are OK (since they’re free!)
The grilled pork sandwich reminds me very much of the Vietnamese sanwiches I’ve had. It was fine.
The garlic fries are small in portion — for $ 2.75 (look at the picture). It’s curly with tons of garlic on top. it gave us a very bad after taste, but that may be just the way garlic reacts.
Total tab is $ 20, which is not all that cheap, but it’s good if you’re cravinga good sandwich… muct better than say a Quiznos or a Subway of course!

Everything about this place (ambiance, food) reminds me of a subway or quiznos. I thought that I was going to get a great sandwich, but it turned out to be nasty ingredients on relatively decent bread.
I got the turkey avocado sandwich. Now, given the name, you would think that there would be avocado on the sandwich. Perhaps that’s my problem: thinking too much. What came on the sandwich was disgusting, mass produced, watery guacamole like substance that I suspect came out of a large white plastic bin.
With blocks and blocks of choices for food (most of those choices very good) in this neighborhood, I don’t expect to be returning to this chain-​like place. Sorry, toasties. If I’m going to eat a chain sandwich, I’d rather have quiznos.
