Sparky’s Fun & Joy began with a dare. A dare to become a business owner in San Francisco that supports its community. For over 5 years, we have turned this dream into a reality.

«Joy is increased by spreading it to others.» It all started with a dare. A dare to dream big and make a difference in our community is how Sparky’s Fun & Joy all began. It was 02⁄2010 when Ryan asked Salvador if he would consider opening a balloon shop. Salvador, thought he was nuts, «Why would I ever do anything with balloons when my degrees are in Information Technology?» That’s when it happened… Ryan knew his friend very well and knew he would not pass up an opportunity for a challenge. Ryan dared Salvador to split the expenses for a tank and balloons and sell balloons on Sunday Feb. 14 2010. Of course Salvador took the bait. The next thing you know it was Sunday and both Salvador and Ryan were rolling their laundry cart up to 16th St and Market in San Francisco. The rest is history.

Salvador enjoyed the opportunity because he was able to help put smiles on people’s faces. While Ryan enjoyed adding the fun to then Sparky’s Balloons. And now Sparky’s Fun and Joy!

Ordered 100 balloons for my son’s first birthday party. The delivery came late, only an hour before the start of the party, and the color of half of the balloons was wrong. We had already confirmed which shade of green and which shade of blue via email but they messed up, in a big way. I complained in person and over the phone but no one took responsibility. Every person I talked to apologized and promised to tell the owner who would get back to me about a partial refund but that never happened. No way am I ever going to give my money to this shady business again!

went here to buy my son some balloons for his birthday. The staff was incredibly courteous, customer service oriented and very helpful! the prices seemed very reasonable and they had a good selection of balloons. Also had some nice party supplies. It is actually a pretty large store. I will definitely go here again.

I walked in to Sparky’s on a Saturday afternoon, and was out the door in 15 minutes with a delivery set up for exactly what I wanted. It was super easy, and the people working at the store were helpful and friendly. I ordered 100 balloons, and not only were they delivered, I wasn’t there to receive them, and Sal waited for the person who was supposed to be there to show up, and then arranged them in the room for me. Through all of that, he was sweet and kind, and even sent me a picture of the balloons in the space after he was done. I couldn’t have hoped for more! I feel like these days it’s rare to experience such amazing customer service. Party planning can be stressful, and the ease of working with Sparky’s made such a difference! Thank you to Sal and everyone else!

For the past 8 years, I’ve wanted to have balloons on my birthday. Not just any balloons. Balloons that float to the ceiling with their streamers brushing the floor. My guests and I would walk through a gentle rain of streamers, like a jungle. Since we are in such a drought, I envisioned a rainstorm of silver streamers with grey and silver and blue balloons representing clouds. I thought I could have a birthday/​rain-​wishing party. I imagined my guest’s delight and perhaps, a little rain magic might come from it.
This year, I could finally afford to do this slightly extravagant thing. I called Sparky’s on Friday and spoke to a very nice person, Jose, who asked if I needed the balloons that day. I replied no, Sunday afternoon would be preferred. He said the business closes at 2 on Sunday, so they would deliver my 100 balloons with silver and grey ribbon streamers, on Sunday, (today), between 1:30−2pm. They charged my credit card and emailed me a receipt.
For my birthday, my family and I made plans to go to a museum, have lunch and come back in time for the balloon delivery. By the time we got out of the house this morning, we realized we’d be pushing it to get back by 1:30 if we went to the De Young (our first choice as one family member has never been there.) So we went to the Legion of Honor, had lunch and rushed through the exhibits to make sure we got back to the house by 1:30 to meet the balloon delivery person. Who. Never. Showed. Up.
At 2:15 I left the business a voicemail. At 2:18, I emailed them. At 2:20, I messaged them on Facebook. At 2:25, I sent them a message on Twitter. It’s now 4:30 and I have not heard from them. I called American Express and disputed the charge, but that doesn’t exactly decorate my house for a party. I was so looking forward to having these pretty balloons to mark the day as a special one. It sounds a little first-​world-​y, but this has been a very tough year for me, and I was really looking forward to those balloons to lift my spirits.
I have guests coming at 6pm and no decorations. Sparky’s, you have provided neither Fun nor Joy.

These are the best balloon people and the nicest group of folks I’ve ever met! They did the balloon decorations at the LGBT Center for the Atmos Queer Spring Fling and not only were they the most creative displays I’ve ever seen, but they were so friendly and nice. Think of them first for all your balloon and party needs!

I love the people who work here — they’re helpful and friendly. I also like the toys and selection for balloons… But I never had good luck with their helium balloons. They never lasted long enough (not more than half a day) to enjoy them for a party. And they’re expensive! Last time, I splurged on a mylar balloon because my daughter saw the Elsa and Anna figures on them. Anyway, after $ 12 (for 1 balloon only!) it started deflating in about 2 – 3 hours. Next morning it was dragging on the floor. And they specifically told me that it would last a week. I would shop here again but not for balloons.

Their skill, creativity and attention to detail have really made all our events all the more memorable from walls of balloons to table decorations, special figurines, and balloon drops. Your rebuttal doesn’t make sense or you didn’t actually read my short review. You charged me $ 15 to fill my balloon and I was quoted $ 4 – 6 by another store. That’s the definition of a scam.

I think I just got haggled by them. First of all, they have all their balloons at child’s height which inevitably is enticing for a child to put the balloon in his or her mouth. Once they do, of course, you buy it. I am okay with that but I was just charged five dollars for a latex balloon with helium. I’m confused. I said «wow that’s an expensive balloon”— and the store employee said «oh yes, we have a shortage of helium» … Huh? We had just spent $ 50 on merchandise from their store when this happened. When I’ve been there before and at other toy stores, they happily throw in a free balloon for the child. I guess hard time have hit sparkys– hence, the five dollar balloon. Sorry sparkys you just lost any future business from me at your store.

Was NOT impressed with the customer service at all. We came into the store about 10 minutes before closing. Once we walked into the store the girl working there rudely informed us that they were closing.
Obviously we knew that and we were trying our best to get in and get out. The girl had her purse on and was on her phone the duration of our time there. Making it very clear we were not wanted there and that she was ready to go home. Aside from her rude comment telling us they were closing. We were not asked if we needed help.
We found what we needed and we had to ask someone for pricing. So the guy working there answered our question and rung us up. He’s the only reason they’re getting two stars instead of one.
We were done in less than 10 minutes. I will not be coming back here.

Easy to work with, delivered exactly what I wanted, great customer service and friendly, helpful delivery guy who arrived on time despite the rain, the early hour, and the hard-​to-​find location. Price was lower than similar services I’ve used in LA and SD. Strongly recommend. Thanks Sparky’s.

I really wanted to like this place because it’s close to my house and I’ve had several occasions lately where I’ve needed balloons for parties. They have some cute stuff and a few friendly staff but but I’ve been disappointed with the service on numerous occasions.
I haven’t had any problems when I’ve gone in to get balloons blown up that same day — although I have to say, last time the person who was helping me seemed really bummed about it. I don’t expect a hug and a cuddle when buying party supplies but can you at least act like I’m not totally putting you out?
A couple times now I’ve picked out balloons and paid for them to be set aside and blown up for an event a couple of days later. That has never worked out. Not only was my order not ready when I arrived to pick them up but they had «lost» the balloons I had picked out (and, again, already paid for). In each case I was told they sold out of many of the balloons I wanted, and then I barely received a shrug when I said I had actually picked out and had set aside those balloons. It’s not the end of the world or anything but, seriously, did you just use up my balloons that I had already bought because other people came in and wanted to buy them? Or did you actually just lose them? Either way, that’s not very good service, is it?
I gave this store multiple chances but I’m done. I’ll be going elsewhere from now on. I’m surprised by all the good reviews. Maybe it’s just me but this place needs to seriously get it together.

I ordered balloons from Sparky’s on a Thursday afternoon to be delivered the following Sunday for a special event my church was having. I ordered online, which their website needs a lot of work, and called to confirm my order. They were very easy to work with once I called. The balloons they delivered looked absolutely awesome! They did a great job. They were about 15 minutes late to the delivery and it took a few days to get a receipt but besides those two issues Sparky’s was great. They have great pricing and lots of options. I definitely would work with them again.

Uninspired small toy shop with some things placed here and there. They were gearing up for Halloween so there was an uninspired small costume area staged in the back.

I originally popped in to see about party supplies. They have neat stuff but it wasn’t the large selection that I expected. They did have neat stuff for birthdays and common occasions but I’m one to throw parties for less frequent events, like the Olympics. Then again, it’s a balloon shop — it says so right in the name. I made a mental note to come back when I needed balloons.
About a month later, I needed balloons. I came back, ordered a quantity of balloons, and was reassured that they would fit in my car. On the day I went to pick them up, my friend stayed with my car while I double parked to run inside. In hindsight, I could have probably fit in another ten balloons or at least another friend, but that’s what I get for fussing.
Trust them on balloon quantities and whether or not they will fit in your car. Quick double parking may be necessary.

What gem of a little local party supply shop! I came here in need of a mylar balloon and candles for my mom’s birthday that we just celebrated this week, and Sal was an absolute sweetheart. Right when I walked in, I was cheerfully greeted and asked if I needed any assistance, to which he was kind enough to give me his suggestions on the various types of candles that they provided and the different balloons that were available for blowing up.
I decided on some cute numbered candles, and a candle that says «Again». It was so fun, and my mom sure had a nice little laugh.
I also chose a single simple polka dot Happy Birthday balloon, and had informed Sal that it was going to a restaurant, so to make sure that the string wasn’t too long. Sal took it one step more and made the single balloon extra jazzed up by adding a couple of little latex balloons at the bottom near the weight. It was just too cute, and I loved this little extra touch that was added. Single mylar balloon was $ 5.00.
Sparky’s also has an upstairs section of Bachelorette and Bridal Shower favors and goodies. Good variety of latex balloons, and even pinatas.
As a small business owner myself, it’s important to remember to SHOP SMALL! Thanks to Sal… and to Sparky’s!
