Schulzies Bread Pudding

Although a high-​end bread pudding joint screamed «gentrification» in more ways than one, I’m still sad to see such a unique shop bite the dust. Even if the prices seemed just a bit steep, I enjoyed the fact that they had quite a few flavors to choose from, and that you could customize your cup with an array of add-​ons. Service was always fast and courteous as well.
Alas, maybe it was just too unique to justify having a bricks-​and-​mortar shop. Here’s hoping we see Schulzie’s stick around as a food truck or a farmers’ market pop-​up, perhaps?

Very disappointing. $ 5 for a small scoop of cold bread pudding that’s been sitting out all day… not really my thing.
I came here with the fiancé as we were making our way over to the Opera House for a ballet. We were hankering for dessert and it seemed like the perfect solution! Sadly not so. After looking over the selection I actually decided not to order anything at all. The fiancé ordered one scoop of chocolate and one scoop of blueberry. Both were… edible, but certainly didn’t inspire my taste buds. I didn’t like that it was cold and the portion sizes seemed very measly for the price.
All in all, I’d say an ice cream shop is a better choice!

It’s a travesty that Schulzies is closing their doors today. This shop offered something completely unique and will be sorely missed. While I believe some of the products will still be available via online shopping or in a few cafes around town, it won’t be the same as coming in and ordering bread pudding like you would at an ice cream shop with tastings, toppings and sauces.
It may not have been the best bread pudding I’ve ever had, but it certainly had the most variety. I’ll definitely miss getting a warm bowl of whiskey bread pudding with whiskey sauce topped with toffee bits and graham crackers. This was «as good as it gets.»

It is such a shame this place is closing. I really hope they open in another location in San Francisco.
It is a great option of dessert for sure. You get scoops of bread pudding of your chosen flavor (you can ask for it to be warmed up or eat it chilled), then you get the toppings (lots of options like almonds, crackers, strawberries, chocolate chips.), and then you chose your sauce (like caramel). Simple as that.
One scoop is actually a lot of product, so $ 4.50 is a great price. Plus, you can get as many toppings as you want.

Purpose: Heard about the closing on April 14, 2015. In the area swing by for one last time.
Set-​up: Located in the Hayes Valley area tucked inside a space adjacent to furniture consignment store. When walking in you must make a sharp left turn to enter the place. Once inside pretty basic simple place. Marble counter with stainless steel containers and high partition glass. Walls are marble brick design matching part of the floor. Behind counter sit grinder, espresso machine, three panel menu board, drip machine, loose tea canisters. Utensil station is right outside next to restroom. There’s no seating in/​out however you can grab one of the cement seaters outside if any available. Its really a place to order and take out or home to enjoy.
Staff: Young girl about early 20s with blue/​greenish hair. Warm service explained what’s the newest and popular. I shouldn’t even ask that as I try every flavor there is ever since they open. I had to tell her to give me couple of minutes. She then brought over a bucket of spoons for sampling. Very attentive never left me out of sight.
Cleanliness: Grade A, impeccable clean as day one as expected for a place with limited offerings.
Eats/​Drinks: One single scoop of raisin rum with whiskey drizzle topping $ 4.50. What can I say? Tasty? Yes! Worth it? I’m divided on this subject. All I can say is flavor listed use to be there. It wasn’t runny or dense just perfect. Light and airy is whats best describe the bread pudding here. With drizzles of whiskey sauce it taste even more boozy with the alcohol part soak in. However, when you guys first open there was this taste that I had memeorie of. This time around the taste wasn’t there anymore. What happen? The pudding balls looks tired now.

Punch Lines: Modest cost, pleasing flavors, drool-​worthy, no seating, imaginable toppings, clam vibe, well-​prepared, friendly, zippy service, can’t go wrong, casual and delicious, worth the wait, crowd pleasing.
Tradeoffs: It’s just bread pudding made in a form of ice cream scoops pass off as a new novelty.
Final Thoughts: Now to be honest even I didn’t see this coming. It has been two years knowing you. Everytime when I’m in, you provided me with great CS and zippy service. For what ever the reason is, I hope one day you will return somewhere in the bay area perhaps another trend will sprout up. Till we meet again! Good luck and best wishes on your next project.

Oh… I guess I didn’t review this either. Luckily, I just went back here last week, as this is a spot that we like taking out-​of-​towners. This little place can be found right outside of Maker & Moss on Hayes.
First off: I do not like bread pudding. Please read my review as if you are someone who has either never had bread pudding before or will only eat it under certain circumstances.
Bread pudding is often warm, I am told. I am also told that whiskey sauce is a necessary part of the dish. I do not like whiskey sauce, so I’m already out of this game. But wait! No, actually, I’m not, because you can customize the hell out of your bread pudding!
The way it’s set up is that they basically have tubs of the stuff, and they scoop it out like ice cream. Most of the flavors are cold, and there are a set number of them that are served warm. The texture of this is a lot like eating ice cream that somehow got oversaturated with all the mixins. If you like ice cream with mixins mixed in thoroughly, then you will probably like this bread pudding.
The boyfriend loves this place, because he is a bread pudding addict, and not the type that is picky about how traditionally it’s made. I very rarely try a bit of his because he always gets whiskey sauce. As for me, I get the s’mores flavor with graham crackers, vanilla sauce, and whipped cream. It’s just a good time, really.
Note that this can get a bit pricey; for one scoop, it’s a little more that what you’d pay for, say, Cold Stone or something. Or Smitten. But if you are open to a different kind of bread pudding, try this place out. If you’re a die-​hard bread pudding enthusiast that does not like the sanctity of bread pudding ruined, perhaps you may want to go elsewhere (and please let me know where I can find good bread pudding so I can surprise the boyfriend).

Room temp bread pudding? I don’t know. It’s not my thing. Even warmed up in the microwave, I don’t think it’ll stand against a bread pudding that’s hot out of the oven, with a crisped top, and drizzled with a nice warm whiskey sauce.
My friend and I stopped by this place for dessert after dinner at Arlequin, as she had always wanted to try their bread pudding here. I had the Timeless Toffee Crunch and she had the Caramel Charisma. The texture and temperature were all wrong for me. In bread pudding I love the contrast between a crisped top and a soft and flavorful middle with a drizzle of warm sauce, just like I’ve had at Angeline’s Louisiana Kitchen. There was none of that contrast here. And I’ve always served and been served hot off the oven bread pudding. That I think is another crucial element that’s missing in the way they serve bread pudding here. If they made them baked/​broiled on top to order (don’t mind waiting) in small ramekins to achieve the crisped top and serve it warm, it would taste so much better. The mushy texture is not very appealing.
As much as I love bread pudding and think it’s a cool idea to have a dessert place dedicated to serving different flavors of bread pudding, I don’t think I’ll be returning to this place.

First of all… I love bread pudding. I literally waited for Schulzies to open. When they came out with a Groupon, I knew it was fate. Sometimes you want something sweet, but not chocolate, ice cream, or candy… you want something like cake… something like a piece of pie, but not really and bread pudding fits the perfect criteria. They have a couple flavors both for hot and cold bread pudding. The bread pudding is very rich for my taste… it’s way too sweet. This store is more like a ice cream shop where you can choose a number of toppings to go with your flavor of pudding to make it even sweeter. I tried the cookies and cream and the smores flavors and could only take about 3 bites because of the sweetness.

Delicious breadpuds, my faves were the blissed out blueberry and celestial chocolate chunk so far.
I didn’t get to try all the flavors as I usually like to do before making these important informed decisions, but line here was pretty slow so I limited my samples as a good samaritan. No need to get your bread pudding warmed just because you can asshold up the line, the pudding tastes good chilled anyway.
Kind of pricey at $ 6.50 for a double scoop.

We saw Schultzies on Shark Tank– the idea of a bread pudding shop sounded brilliant and we had to check it out. When we went, there were 3 warm options (chocolate, banana and apple pie) and 8 – 10 cold options (which you can ask to have warmed up). Some of the cold options were quite inventive (props for that). Toppings included chocolate syrup, whiskey syrup, vanilla, caramel, strawberry various nuts. Between the three of us, we tried a number of permutations. And I personally found them mediocre at best. My main issue was the bread pudding was too mushy and lacked the toasted texture and various layers that come with a real baked bread pudding. Also despite the pudding supposedly being warmed, the bread pudding was on the cold end. I thought the whiskey syrup would go perfectly with the warm apple pie bread pudding– but between the cold-​ish pudding, mushy (but not gooey) inside and too booze-​forward whiskey syrup, I found myself only eating half my pudding.
The staff was friendly and let us try a number of flavors. The space was also nicely set up: open, inviting and orderly (although it lacks sufficient seating!). But at $ 5+ for a small scoop, I’d rather throw in a few extra bucks and get a real bread pudding elsewhere.

Cup of love for dessert! We came here after our dinner at Monsieur Benjamin. It was getting towards the end of the night and the guy working there was so friendly by giving us a handful of samples. We loved the banana and caramel but went with the caramel as that was my favorite out of all the ones we sampled. We shared the one scoop cup which was a good size. I like the process of Schulzies because you pick your base flavor and size and the price includes toppings. We stayed simple though and just left it alone with the toffee toppings.
The bread pudding here is a little different as it’s a little soggy where if you get bread pudding at a restaurant you actually see more of the bread pieces. It’s still a good comforting dessert perfect for a cold night. The caramel flavors stuck out more than the flavors of the other bread puddings we sampled, but wasn’t overly sweet. I say, save yourself some money, by skipping the dessert at nearby Monsieur Benjamin & head to Schulzies instead. 3.5 rounded up.

Finally! Someone has applied the Froyo business model to bread pudding!
Around 10 different flavors of bread pudding, your can get it warmed up or cold (go for the warm), and add all sorts of interesting toppings. You can even get it sauced. (

If I could give this place ⁶⁄₅ stars I would.
My friend and I saw Sarah Schulz on Shark Tank and were impressed at how all the Sharks LOVED her bread puddings. We noticed she was in SF, very close to us, so we visited the city and stopped at Schulzie’s for a try. We were thrilled when we saw that Sarah herself was there and we stopped in for some bread pudding.
The instant she saw us Sarah lit up and greeted us with a smile and offered us samples of anything we’d like to try. When we told her «it all looks so good, what would you recommend?» She again looked excited to give us the rundown and let us sample every flavor and told us what’s in them and what she prefers and let us know she can warm up the puddings for us. She was beyond polite and friendly. She reminds me of one of those sweet, motherly «beaver cleaver» types — so nice and friendly and makes delicious bread pudding your mom used to make.
To say that the bread pudding is delicious is the understatement of the century. The puddings are so sweet and tasty and they can be served warm or chilled and with any topping or sauces you want. I will be coming back every time I visit SF which is about once a week. If you have any doubts about this place give them a try and you won’t regret it.
The best dessert I’ve ever had in my life, made by a friendly, wonderful owner who loves her customers as much as her business. This place deserves 6 stars but I guess five will have to do. Thank you Sarah, your dad would be beyond proud of you today

Anyone who knows me knows I’m OBSESSED with bread pudding. (as a quick aside, if you want to know what the best BP i’ve had is, it’s Anita Lo’s lemon poppyseed bread pudding at her West Village restaurant Annisa. I’ve baked it twice now from her cookbook – still trying to perfect it.)
So I was super excited to hear about this concept of a retail store serving bread pudding like it was scoops of ice cream. Unfortunately I learned that they only serve «cold» bread pudding as opposed to warm/​fresh from the oven. ugh – crushed.
Still, gotta give them credit for the novel idea, and don’t get me wrong the product isn’t bad at all – just not what I had hoped.

OH MY Schulzies! I’m a sweet tooth and love my desserts, and Schulzies makes some tasty bread pudding.
It’s a small mom and pop sweet shop, and not open super late, so this is not a place to go after a long night of drinkies! From their website, here are their sweet hours:
Mon-​Thu: 1 pm — 9 pm
Fri: 1 pm — 10:30 pm
Sat: 11 am — 10:30 pm
Sun: 11 am — 9 pm
There are so many flavors, try 108! AND you have the option of having them served cold or warm! Yay! Some flavors are seasonal, so check the board for availability. Oh, and there are toppings too, from caramel to chocolate sauce, etc., Did I mention there’s ice cream, too? Oh my diabetes!
The ones I tried were brown sugar bravado and salted caramel! Solid and delicious flavors! Can’t wait to try more next time.
Loving the Hayes Valley hood, and my Schulzies! Prices are reasonable, staff is friendly and efficient, and such a great location. Only drawback is the lack of seating. Give ‘em a try and your sweet tooth will thank you for it!

Not the best bread pudding I’ve ever had, but it was still delectable. I have a crazy sweet tooth so I can never say no to sweets ^_​^. I stumbled upon this place walking around Hayes Valley and of course, a huge Shark Tank fan I am, I just HAD to help myself with a heaping bowl of bread pudding from Schulzies.
I got the Dulce de Leche and toffee, which were both delicious. Partway through I wished I got a fruity flavor since they started tasting the same. I originally wanted the raspberry one but they sold out :(
A bit pricy for what you get… I’ve had better bread pudding, but if I were craving something sweet in Hayes Valley, I’d come back.

Background — I saw this place on a ROTD, so I had to try it. I went last night and could not find a parking space and frustrated me. The Ballet/​Opera was going, a Jazz thing too, plus construction under streets. So I came back the next day.
Atmosphere — Best way to describe this place is that they are a small ice cream parlor. But replace the ice cream with bread pudding. This is to key to understanding as you need to treat this business the same way as a small ice cream parlor. You are not going to get a porcelain ramekin of hot bready goodness personally made for you. This place is for the masses.
Food
Drinks — none.
Appetizer — none.
My Main Course — I am here for a hot gooey dessert.
Dessert — They had three hot bread puddings and nine chilling for you. They will warm up any of the chilling bread puddings if you would like it that way. You can sample any of their bread puddings. I love blueberries so I tried a sample of their Blissed Out Blueberry served on a metal coffee spoon. That is all I had to have. I went with it served hot with a whiskey sauce, was there a choice when booze is involved? They even serve it like it is ice cream; they use an ice cream scoop to dish out your bread pudding into an ice cream cup. They use a syrup bottle to apply your syrup. Then the only difference is you get a plastic spork instead of a spoon. The whiskey took the bread pudding to another level of deliciousness.
Service — A couple guys working behind the counter. Friendly helpful and even laughed at my bad jokes.
Future — I still need to hit Smuggler’s Cove, so I can see having some drinks and mopping up the booze with some bread pudding.

How often do you come by a bread pudding shop? Hardly ever! Which is why this place is unique and a nice little treat in SF.
SF is just full of cute and adorable shops and this is no exception. It’s small, only enough room to wait in line and order your bread pudding. They have a large menu for you to look at as you wait and you can try free samples! They have over 100 different flavors but only about 9 of them are available at a time I believe. You can get toppings and sauces with your bread pudding as well :) They have a small drink menu that you can order from so you can sip on something as you eat. There is seating available outside by the storefront window. The shop is located in a building shared by Schulzies and a furniture store so don’t walk into the wrong entrance.
My boyfriend and I tried their timeless toffee crunch, apple in the sky, blissed out blueberry, dreamy dulce de leche, celestial chocolate chunk, and smore for me. I enjoyed them all but my favorite was the blissed out blueberry! It was tasty :) I’m used to having my bread pudding served warm so it was weird that it was cold. I think that might have been why I didn’t enjoy it as much but the taste of the bread puddings were great! we also tried their whisky sauce and caramel sauce, we asked for it on the side. The whisky sauce was amazing! It’s definitely something special so I would recommend trying it when you’re here. They also have a number of toppings to choose from but we got the pieces of waffle cone. I usually love this topping but this time the waffle cone were stale from sitting out in the open air i guess so it wasn’t crunchy at all :(
Overall I think this place was worth trying and I definitely enjoyed their bread pudding. Just some things here and there that would have made it awesome. But I’ll definitely come back to try again!

Okay now I’ve had «Schulzies Bread Pudding» bookmarked on Unilocal for several months but have yet to make a trip out to San Francisco until now. And what sparked interest even coming here in the first place was an episode of ABC’s «Shark Tank» that aired back in November 2013. Additionally, the menu of innovative bread pudding offerings convinced me to go here once and for all.
Founded by Sarah Schulz back in 2009, «Schulzies Bread Pudding» started out in Venice Beach, CA with a small walk-​up window made for ordering. And when she opened up an actual brick and mortar location in San Francisco in 2011, this is where the magic started to come alive. Keep in mind that rent here for her San Francisco location is a hefty $ 3200/​mo. The location here is at one of my favorite areas of San Francisco, Hayes Valley. And when you’re surrounded by some of the best restaurants, shops, and boutiques in the area, you know its prime real estate for this business.
I came here with my lovely lady around 7:00pm after spending most of the afternoon shopping nearby. We definitely lucked out as I was able to park only a block away; something that never happens especially in this part of the city. Once we arrive at «Schulzies Bread Pudding», we were the only customers in this charming little business. In the display case, there were nine different offerings of the bread pudding selections. Additionally, there are several various toppings (granola, peanuts, ice cream cone pieces, strawberries, and many more) to choose from. Finally, you can sweeten your bread pudding experience by adding various sauces (chocolate, caramel, vanilla, butterscotch, etc.) as well.
As they were very generous in letting us try free samples, I finally settled for the «S’more for Me!». This was loaded with sweet marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate chunks. I also added crunchy peanuts and whiskey sauce to give it that rich, decadent flavor. They also recommended in having me try it warm which I opted for. My lady orders the «Blissed Out Blueberry» complete with vanilla icing and freshly sliced strawberries. One great thing is the toppings are all free of charge with your bread pudding order and prices are very affordable at $ 4.50/each.
Once our puddings are done, we luckily find a seat directly outside the business. Now if I was eating a dessert in San Francisco on a January evening, I’d probably be bundled up with a warm coat. However, it was a balmy 68° at 7:00pm and made the whole experience even better. We almost felt as if we enjoying this dessert in Los Angeles instead of San Francisco.
After my first bite of the «S’more for Me!», I was literally in bread pudding heaven. The warmth of it definitely helped out considerably. And the light, fluffy texture made it more dense than a soufflé but less dense than a muffin. What had really sold me was the amazing whiskey sauce as it really provided a sweetened caramelized glaze to each bite. My girlfriends’ «Blissed Out Blueberry» also had wonderfully put-​together flavors as this truly tasted homemade in all respects.
So there you have it; my first actual bread pudding experience! And after seeing (and most importantly, tasting) what owner Sarah Schulz has done with her business, I highly recommend anyone who wants to try something a little different in coming here! I guarantee, you will not be disappointed!

I know I’m in the minority on this one, but Schulzies didn’t do it for me. I’ve seen a number of my Unilocal friends give them glowing reviews, but I just can’t do the same. Granted, I’m not the biggest fan of bread pudding. However, I still didn’t find Schulzies all that remarkable.
On the one hand, Schulzies deserves credit for being unique. There just aren’t many places out there that specialize in bread pudding, if any other than them. In all, they offered about 6 – 8 different varieties (both hot and cold) with an array of different toppings and sauces. With my friends and I coordinating our orders, I ended up with a Double Scoop ($ 6.50) of the SCHULZIES CLASSIC and TOFFEE FUDGE FUSION topped with Salted Caramel Sauce, Peanuts, and Waffle Cone Chips.
The peanuts and waffle chips were great and added some crunch, but the salted caramel sauce was a mistake. The taste of it was fine, but it made the already sweet bread pudding much too sweet for me to finish. Not to mention the fact it covered up the taste of the pudding itself (I couldn’t taste which was which). I guess the pudding had the right sort of texture to it, but I thought it was a bit mushy. Then again, I might not be the best person to ask.
While I had hoped the experience might have been able to sway my opinion, I’m more convinced now than before that bread pudding just isn’t for me. If anyone could have converted me, Schulzies might have been it. Despite my feelings though, they could still be worth trying for you, particularly if you like bread pudding. Personally, I’ll just stick with ice cream.
