We specialize in ammonia free hair color. Salon Basinger was an early adopter of ammonia free technology and uses it exclusively for hair color. Our commitment to beautiful hair doesn’t stop with hair color. To support and build strong, shiny, attractive hair (color treated, or not) we have sought out hair care products that utilize essential oils and plant extracts with minimal parabens, sulfates, sodium chloride or other, often unnecessary ingredients.

Salon Basinger is just steps away from Union Square. Our stunning view overlooks downtown San Francisco, nestled 16 stories above the pulse of the city in a comfortable, relaxing space with a contemporary old world charm. The salon is a place where men and women can steal away, relax and recharge while receiving top-​of-​the-​line hair care.

History

Established in 2009.

We first opened as Anthony Basinger Hair Studio. In January of 2013, we moved to the current Union Square location expanding the space and evolving into Salon Basinger. A primary motivation for this move was to create a broader base from which to share an ammonia free hair color salon environment with other stylists and offer ammonia free services to more clients.

Business Owner

Anthony was a very early adopter in the ammonia free hair color revolution. He began using INOA hair color as soon as it was introduced in early 2010. Always eager to continue his professional education, Anthony participated in a number of classes in California and New York City learning the new chemistry and mastered the nuances of the unique oil delivery system. He fully embraced INOA as his only permanent hair color line, abandoning 100 years of ammonia-​based hair color technology forever. Prior to opening Anthony Basinger Hair Studio in 2009, Anthony was a top stylist at Festoon Salon in San Francisco and Berkeley.

Constantly active in expanding his professional knowledge, he has traveled around the world to participate in workshops and classes by Vidal Sassoon, L’Oréal, Bumble and Bumble, Karg and Blackwell Academy and the Alexandre de Paris Academie in France. He has also taught haircutting and coloring to emerging stylists as an instructor in Festoon’s apprentice program.

Almost 2 years later and my hair just keeps getting better. Anthony always finds the perfect balance between what I want (blonde) and what will actually look good. My hair is healthy, shiny and perfect even when I wash and go. It’s the perfect balance between blonde and brown and looks completely natural. Thanks Anthony for several years of great hair!

Hunter Treadwell has left a big impression from the first day I met him at a Thai restaurant in the Lower Haight. He was waiting for pick-​up, as I was. We hit it off! He gave me his business card, n although he was working for Salon Festoon at that time I never got to calling till a year later. He has the most amazingly positive energy, and spirit! Simply put, Anthony is a genius with hair. His cuts and color are as good as it gets. He can change his style depending on what I’m looking for in a cut/​color, moving seamlessly between edgy and conservative. I am in awe of his abilities. He has been cutting my hair for 2 years and I can’t imagine going anywhere else.
What’s more, it is really pleasant being in Anthony’s presence. He chats just the right amount. His beautiful salon is a perfect size (quiet and cozy) and has a great view of the city skyline. He is also flexible with scheduling and works with me whenever I have a last-​minute change of plans.

I have been going to Anthony since his Festoon days and would follow him anywhere in the Bay Area, and beyond if it came to that! He is a seriously excellent colorist and superb with curly hair. Highly, highly recommend. If you haven’t had ammonia free color before you are in for an incredible treat, it will change your life (and your itchy amonia covered scalp). My hair has gotten softer and silkier in the past few years, and don’t skimp on the treatments Salon Basinger offers. Save and protect that color and invest a few extra bucks on this, it’s worth the money and he’ll customize to what your tresses need and want.

Nobody does a better job than Anthony on my hair. I can be picky sometimes, but there’s nobody else who can better translate my incoherent ramblings into styling and color that knocks socks off the way he does.
I’m always stunned by his technical skill and how much he stresses education. He’s highly knowledgeable of any product or process, especially color and highlights. That level of professionalism is rare.
This was my first time at his new location. And what a neat location it is! A really fun space, where we can talk, figure out just what I want and need, and make the magic happen.

I have difficult hair. It’s very fine so when it gets too long it hangs down like the ears on a basset hound and I have funny swirls and cowlicks so when it’s cut short it sometimes sticks out all over the place. For years and years I have been relying on the neighborhood barber or hairdresser who usually always used clippers. Then I was introduced to Anthony and he has made all the difference. He’s very patient and very thorough. He only uses scissors on my hair and even four weeks later my hair looks good. Damn good if I may say so. The shop is in a newly refurbished building that’s easy to get to and is clean and bright and he plays good music. And since I can honestly say this is without doubt the best haircut of my life I am hooked on Anthony. Check him out.

Anthony is the best. He is a brilliant stylist who can make even the most difficult hair (mine) look amazing! He is talented, precise and professional. He cuts hair to flatter your face and is remarkable with color.
By the way, he can fix even the most impossible hair disasters (you know, like when you’ve waited too long to get it cut and busted out the bathroom scissors. .. or when you thought it might be a good idea to get your hair at the mall). Go see him!

Anthony has been my stylist since first coming to San Francisco last year and I have never been happier. For me, finding and keeping a stylist is a very important and personal thing and Anthony has been a God send. He knows I am a regular motorcycle rider and my long hair gets beat up as it flaps in the wind but because he takes the time to know each of his clients on an individual basis he has a plan to keep my hair healthy and looking great, and it does look great! I love Anthony and you will too.
