Rolling Out

No matter how many times I come in, I’m always welcomed with the scent of fresh baked goods. The owner is also especially kind and always has a smile. My favorite is pineapple coconut roll!

Such a quiet place to read a book and also the owner is very friendly person i can tell from the way he talked to customer and he got alot compliments from his pastry

Woke up extra early to grab pastries for some coworkers. Arrived a little after 7 am. They had no pastries and were just setting up. A bit of a bummer. I do appreciate the owner apologizing.

I would love to come here to study more often. It’s great if you have a group of less than 4, but you’ll want to consider other places if you have more people. There are only two people working a time but they’re very fast and friendly.
There’s a second story with bigger tables. Unfortunately there’s only two and those who come alone often take them up with all their notes and electronic devices.
I had an iced vanilla latte for $ 4. To me it seems like a lot but I suppose that’s average nowadays? I shared a classic deli turkey club with a friend. The menu said $ 6.75 but it turned out to be roughly $ 8 after tax. Damn! The bread was waaaay too thick for my preference. I pretty much had to remove half the lettuce and turkey to eat enjoy the sandwich. It’d be nice if they could serve thinner bread and perhaps a side fruit or cookie?

Holy crap, this is amazing. I don’t know how this place isn’t jammed all the time*.
I was just here because I needed a place to chill and work on stuff without the cats bothering me, and at first it seemed like it would fit my expectations: a few specialty pastries that were pretty good, and mediocre coffee, plus a nice neighborhood vibe. The pastries (over the course of the day I had a Hawaiian roll, a sweet potato roll, an Irish sausage roll, and a slice of quiche) were on average a little better than I expected, and the coffee& tea about the same as I expected. And I don’t want to undersell any of that — I was judging on my most challenging ‘San Francisco restaurant’ scale, so ‘mediocre’ is not a nice word for bad. It’s just nothing special. And the pastries, instead of being ‘pretty good’, they were ‘very good’. Not ‘the best I’ve ever had’ or even contenders for the crown, but definitely something I would enthusiastically recommend.
Then I ordered the veggie pot pie. It was gorgeous, and somewhat larger than I expected; it’s really a meal unto itself. It was also totally fresh and very hot. The sauce had a nice mix of spices and can be ordered to taste. For example, it’s not ultra-​peppery, but if you’re like my wife and don’t care for black pepper, ask for the baker to go light on pepper — since it’s fresh-​made, it’s easy for him to do. The puff pastry crust went fantastically with the creamy sauce and vegetable filling, perfectly balancing crispiness and chewiness for ideal mouth feel. It was off the charts compared to my expectations. And only $ 9.
I haven’t had a chance to check the rest of the menu out (even I can only eat so much in a day), but I look forward to it. It’s definitely worth riding the L-​Taraval a few extra stops to get to this place.
A few other positives: good wifi, a power strip if you’re working on your laptop, but also some good group tables if you want to eat lunch/​dinner as a group. It’s not normally what I would think of as a ‘meal’ restaurant, but the menu totally justifies it. The bathroom was clean and stocked. The compost and recycling are handled properly. There’s a cool lie shelving unit with a kind of lending library on it. The little upstairs area is cool… There’s really a lot to like about the place.
*Okay, I do know why it’s not jammed — it’s pretty far out in Parkside. Still, it’s not that much further than 19^th and Taraval, which is pretty trendy and on the same corridor.

I have mixed emotions here.
PROS: I like that there’s plenty of seating, the iced coffee is ok, the pastries are interesting and tasty, and the breakfast sandwiches are big and filling.
But…
CONS: The coffee itself is only so-​so, there’s only one type, and there aren’t many options for fixing it the way you like (you can choose cream, sugar or brown sugar). The interior is kind of dark and dingy. There is usually only one person on-​duty, and having any more than one person in line puts them in a rush. I’ve seen them scramble to attempt to multitask and it ends up feeling very disorganized and haphazard. Also, they sell out of stuff sometimes — I’ve seen empty or near-​empty shelves more than once.
Overall worth a stop for the hawaiian roll or the sweet potato cinnamon roll, but there are also better coffee shop options.

Very reasonably priced, with a coffee averaging $ 2 – 5, pastries under $ 5, and sandwiches roughly $ 8.
I won’t lie– at first glance, this place was a little deceiving. It’s a little run down and cluttered looking, with somewhat cramped seating. However, there is space to sit down, open your laptop, and enjoy your coffee. There’s also an upstairs where you can spread out your work and get away from all the Taravel hustle & bustle.
The selections are great but slim– ranging from breakfast pastries to lunch options. Make sure to get there earlier in the day, as there wasn’t much to refill the display case towards the late afternoon.
The owner is a funny and very hospitable guy, who is definitely helpful in terms of ordering and suggesting items. He even was nice enough to pass out free samples of his holiday pastries. He seemed to be the only worker there on my visit, so the wait was a little longer than expected but totally understandable.
Suggestion: Homemade Meatloaf Sandwich– perfectly moist… with tomato, lettuce, and melted cheese to complement the savory flavor. Placed on fluffy homemade bread that had the perfect consistency of crunchy and soft. Not spicy at all!

The sweet potato tarts are incredible. They feel like mini pumpkin pies.
The breakfast sandwich is made with their homemade bread that’s super soft and porous. I had the breakfast sandwich with egg, tomato + greens, and cheese. The cheese was melted over the egg which was scrambled to perfect consistency — not gooey but not dry.

Yummy snacks made by an awesome passionate guy! Walking in here feels like visiting a friend’s house filled with treats.
He has custom order items and is always experimenting with new desserts. Me likies!

Good pastries in a relaxed atmosphere. Get the bacon morning bun or a sweet potato cinnamon roll and you can’t go wrong. I think their sweet pastries are great but could improve on their savory ones (they’re decent, but given the choice, I’d come here for sweet goodies).
Friendly service and a nice place to watch the world go by (or at least Taraval Street).
I have not tried their sandwiches but will do so in the near future. Rolling Out is a good bakery offering yummy treats and I love supporting local businesses!

This coffee shop/​café has some of the most delicious baked goods. They have this hawaiian sticky roll that is AMAZING.
The service here is great too. The owner is super friendly and many of the baristas here are personable.
I enjoy their lattes and mochas!
Their veggie and turkey sandwiches are yummy too. The homemade/​baked bread is soooooo good.
Only thing is that this café can get kind of warm, even for the Sunset District. I think they need a little more air flow but it’s not a deal breaker.
They also have plenty of seats downstairs and as well as upstairs :)

Are you looking for a decent study place while having a cup of coffee and pastry on the side? Then I think Rolling Out is perfect for you. It’s a cute little café with couple tables and outlets. They have free wifi, too! No more seats downstairs? Well, they have an upstairs too. Although I didn’t check it out, I think there’s like room for 7 with also, outlets. Their style of arrangement reminds me much of my UCLA days when I would study at this Japanese place. Oh, the memories.
I decided to get some studying done on a Saturday morning. Staff were friendly and nice. Tables were not occupied, but there were abundant of people that ordered take outs. I ordered a caramel latte and a breakfast sandwich (Egg, Cheese, Salad and Tomato). I wasn’t fond of the caramel latte cause it had a bitterness to it. However, as simple as the sandwich was, it was REALLY tasty. Their homemade bread definitely out wins any bread I’ve ever had. Ingredients were fresh and a light vinaigrette touch to it.
I stayed quite a bit. I had slight distractions here and there from their pastry temptations. Cinnamon rolls were what I heard most and started to crave.
Great place for studying as it doesn’t get loud. High ceilings, so the lighting isn’t that great which means place is not as brightly lit as I would like. Tables are decent, but smaller than I would like. Ideal for single or pair studying, not for groups.

There weren’t that many pastry selections available since I was there super early, like 7:30am on a Saturday. I really wanted to pick up some Portuguese tarts but they were not available yet. Bummer. Decided to go with the ginger cream morning bun and a breakfast sandwich.
Morning bun was good. Moist and not too sweet.
The breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs, tomato slice, lettuce and cilantro aioli on sliced bread was DELICIOUS. It looked like a regular breakfast sandwich but man after 1 bite I devoured the whole thing in 2 mins.

I heard many good things about this place and my friends and i happened to be right across the street at the dumpling restaurant. I really had to pee and was nearly going to explode and someone was already in the bathroom so i ran across the street to here. When i rushed in, i noticed no one was in the café, but the owner, who kindly let me use the restroom, without having the need for me to buy anything, but i did anyway. I got the PB&J bun ($ 3), which is tasty :3 To my surprise, he gave me the very berry (?) croissant for FREE! Very kind of him. (:

This place is perfection for studying or getting work done while you nom on delicious pastries. I’ve dropped a lot of hours studying and hanging out here and have always been happy sitting here, whether it’s been LSAT studying or studying for APs.
Reasons why Rolling Out is my favorite:
1) Bruno is simply the best! Friendly and always making all sorts of new delicious pastries and food. Chili egg tarts and wonderful homemade bread. Latest free sample today — spicy toffee. NOMS. Also, where else can you find ppm for gluten-​free items?
2) Reliable internet. Need to watch videos or send emails? No problem. This place has you covered.
3) So cozy. Tuck yourself away into one of the little corners or niches and four hours later you’ll wonder where the time went.
tl;dr rolling out is wonderful if you need noms and a place to hang out/​study/​chill/​get work done

I would move to Outer Sunset just to have better access to this place. I was in the area using a Groupon, and I don’t make it out here often from SOMA. I took full advantage — I got the Hawaiian sticky bun that everyone raves about, a Portuguese egg tart, and a sweet potato tart. Everything was delicious — the egg tarts had a light and fluffy filling and flaky crust, and the sticky bun was huge. Soft like a good bun should be, but done enough so it’s nice to pull apart and eat in small bites. I was impressed with the flavor and over quality of everything I got, and I definitely want to try the other things that are available.
Next time I’ll come in and spend some time here, the ambiance was nice with comfortable chairs available. I think there was free wifi available too. I’m sure my next visit will be 5 star-​worthy as well!

This place was pretty good for desserts. We came and had a traditional cinnamon roll and a piece of the black sesame cheesecake.
Two thumbs up for creativity with flavors, there were some really interesting flavors with the cheesecake (like black sesame) and rolls (sweet potato).
The place itself is quite large but kinda grungy and cold like a hole in the wall. From the pictures on Unilocal I didn’t expect it to look that way.
The food was good, not too expensive, a decent price. And the portions are very filling. This looks like a great place for young teens and teens to hang out after school. They have games and I think wifi too.
They all have some «real food, non dessert» items which I didn’t not get the chance to try.
The server working was very nice.

First off, this is a bakery that serves coffee and NOT a coffee shop that bakes goods. Their baked goods are fantastic!
+ Food: I tried their Hawaiian Sticky Bun ($ 3.50) which brought me back to the islands. The bun was wonderfully buttery with a nice level of cinnamon and topped with pineapple chunks.
+ Coffee: Staight answer — Don’t come here for the coffee if you want a quality cup of brew. I ordered a large latte which was nice and creamy but didn’t taste like quality beans. I suggest switching to Sightglass or Blue Bottle and it will be a world of difference. I do really like that they offer 3 sizes (sm, m, lg) depending on how caffeinated I need to be.
+ Service: AMAZING STAFF! Everyone was SO friendly. I intentionally sat downstairs (there’s 2 floors) to observe how the staff interacts with the customers and everyone was extremely attentive. I really respect places that have good service. It brings the whole experience to the next level (probably obvious).
My only complaint was that the coffee was subpar but the service and food really made up for it. The experience was around a 4 star range (would be a 5 if the coffee was better) and I will certainly come back to try more of their baked selection.

Cute and unassuming café in Outer Sunset along the Taraval vein. You wouldn’t know that some of the best pastries are being churned out here.
The owner is super nice. A chemist in his former life, now he bakes and mans the storefront. He has some interesting items on sale — bacon egg tart, sweet potato cinnamon roll, to name a couple. I asked for his recommendations and he gave me BOGO because I couldn’t choose between the sweet potato cinnamon roll and the hawaiian sticky bun. And I’m glad he did, because both tasted great. And to his instruction, both can be reheated in the microwave or oven if you, for some reason, can’t consume them right away.
If you’re waiting for some take out from one of the many dumpling holes in the three block radius, come here for some dessert! I guarantee that you’ll like the pastries here more than the dumplings ;) Because P. S. the dumplings in this area are overhyped.

I had to come to try the Sweet Potato Cinnamon roll. I mean that just sounds amazing, right? And it was! Warm, soft, tasty. Hit the spot for sure!
I should have just stopped with the cinnamon toast roll, but I got the chocolate chip cookie as well — not the best decision. The chocolate chip cookie was very dry, crumbly, and dull tasting. I honesty think that this was a bad batch that I just happened to get, unfortunately. A key ingredient was missing, like eggs or butter or something. Hopefully, their cookie is better on other days.
Cinnamon roll was on point though!
