Patisserie Philippe

The Patisserie’s retail front may have closed, but they still serve wholesale and deliveries over $ 50.
I am usually a clean eater, but we have this delivered 2x a month to my office and have to get some croissant on. Bring on the gluten and dairy! The last few times the croissant has been almost burnt on the outside and doughy, not flaky, on inside. Disappointing.
The pros are how inexpensive the products are. With a $ 50 order, it includes several dozen huge items, so if you need to feed a crowd affordably with decent quality, this is a good choice.
The order system, at least for us, is a bit archaic. We have a stack of forms that is basically a copy of a copy (of probably more copies) with tiny writing, and then you fax it over and hope and pray he gets it.
We also have to do cash on delivery, which is a pain, as he requires multiple social security numbers to set up an account. For $ 100/​month, the office did not feel it was worth it, so twice a month petty cash has to be scrounged up.
I also got some French attitude once with an order I placed. Phillipe told me that I didn’t order a minimum of something, which, okay, with the tiny writing on the form, I do not doubt, so he told me a new amount. I dug around in my bag and the smallest I had for a $ 3 dollar or so charge was a $ 10, and I realized after the fact that a) I did not get enough change back, and b) the amount did not even total correctly, as in the bill was an overcharge.

GOOD NEWS!!! Phillippe is baking again. We picked up a package of his Diamant Cookies at Coffee Bar on Montgomery Street. My partner recognized the trademark pink Patisserie Philippe label. I recognized the Philippe touch after scarfing down half the bag with my caffe latte.
We googled the phone number on the label and found an entry for it in the on-​line yellow pages. Looks like the next incarnartion of Patisserie Philippe is going to be in Dogpatch. Check out

In a quiant neighborhood sat a cute patisserie awaiting people to have some amazing croissants (gruyère, bacon onion were both flaky and delicious), lovely bowl style of cappuccino, and a striking attractive and mouth waiting more plum bigger size macarons. They did run out certain flavors. Espresso, passion fruit, Earl grey, pistachio were all very good.
On the other side is a cute dresser drawer like with lots of coconut cookies and meringues, pan style pound cake style sweets.
This place is actually much more known for their celebration cakes where you can see them taking out different cakes and bite samplers from the giant fridge sitting in the seating area, all for delivery and couples trying for the wedding reception.
A relaxing patisserie that you can enjoy sweet service while soaking in some easy listening and some eclectic mix of other types of music.

So it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that in order to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you consume. And while people go to the gym to stay fit or lose weight, I’ve been waking up at the crack of dawn to go to the gym before work just to pile it back on during dinner or the weekends… all so I can feed my Unilocal ADDICTION. :X
I’m not much of a sweet tooth, but sometimes I need something sweet in my life. This is where Macarons have come into my life. They’re simple, yet decadent and one little cookie does the trick to satisfy me.
On Saturday, 7.9.11, my friends and I came to Patisserie Philippe for their Macarons. Upon walking in, my eyes immediately fixated on all the eye-​catching, beautifully created cakes and pastries in the glass case. I saw a creampuff cake that looked absolutely divine and contemplated even buying it though I don’t know who would have helped me eat it. I had to tell myself to stay on track and to get what we came for… MACARONS!
A rainbow of Macarons ($ 1.75/each) were on display with an assortment of flavors including Rose, Lavender, Strawberry, Raspberry, Hazelnut, Espresso, Mango, Earl Grey, and Pistachio. Although some flavors were sold out, I still couldn’t make up my mind on what to get. This is where Leo, the owner’s awesome brother came to the rescue. With his help, I choose the Caramel, Lavender, Hazelnut and Earl Grey Macaron. While my friends and I were done selecting our flavors, Leo says, «Ohhh, and we have Coconut!» My friends and I looked at each other and were probably thinking the same thing, «I WANT THAT TOO!» Leo must have read our minds because he ended up just giving us the Coconut Macarons to try. SCORE!
As we plopped our hiney on the table to eat our Coconut Macaron, I couldn’t help but notice that the Coconut, Earl Grey and Lavender all had a sprinkling of its flavor namesake which I thought was a nice touch. Wonderfully crisp on the outside from the almond glaze, the Macarons had a toothsome moist and chewy bite. The cream was thick, creamy, and sweet. My favorites were the Earl Grey and the Lavender. The Earl Grey had a subtle bitterness which offset some of the sweetness while the Lavender had a nice floral aroma with a hint of woody flavor. One thing to note are the Macarons varied in temperature as some were in the glass case and others were just taken from the fridge. The ones from the fridge had a harder texture but still maintained its softeness. The biggest difference was the cream filling which had hardened, making the Macaron like eating an ice cream sandwich; best described by my friend.
While we were slowly devouring our Coconut Macaron, Leo graciously offered us some Black Carrot Ice Tea which was refreshingly light with floral notes to it. It perfectly complemented the Macarons helping to balance some of its sweetness.
After one of my friends and I finished our Coconut Macaron, we looked over to see that our other friend had devoured ALL five of his Macarons. He said if he had a dozen with him at work, he would polished them all off in one sitting. I guess he can agree with us that Patisserie Philippe’s Macarons were THAT good! If I only had his metabolism, I wouldn’t have an ounce of guilt feeding my Unilocal Addiction, though my credit cards would be double flipping the birdie at me.

Finally came back for their deli and pastries after my initial reviews for their French macarons. As you would have guessed 5 stars update, they were truly expectational.
Their Salmon Quiche was amazing. Every pieces of salmon in the quiche was cooked the perfect succulent texture. The quiche was creamy and luscious.
We waited a bit for the Panini to come out of the oven. Our patience paid off. I enjoyed every bite of the soft crust and I almost licked all the crumbs off my plate. The chicken fillings was lovely grilled.
The Apple Frangipane was the most scrumptious thing I have had. I do not know how they managed to make it so rich and sweet while still not leaving any deluged sugary aftertaste. The balance between the crust and the filling, the sweetness and the tartness, the crispiness and the moistness… I can’t seem to find any flaws. Everything was perfect.
I absolutely adore the ambiance and the service. The staff are extremely helpful, friendly and non pretentious. There were no pressure, no rush, just good old service with a smile. Didn’t hurt that they are also very reasonably priced for the quality.

One word, C R O Q U E M B O U C H E.
I’ve had a fascination with croquembouches for as long as I can remember! As a kid (a fat kid at heart or just a fat kid period, I’m not saying), I always wished we’d have a croquembouche for Christmas because that’s what it looked like — a Christmas tree. A tower made from cream puffs, held together with caramel then drizzled or draped with sugar string. Appealing to the eyes and taste buds!
Well back to Patisserie Philippe, they make croquembouches! A French bakery can’t get any more authentic, at least in my book, cause I haven’t seen it anywhere else. They also make French macarons, my faves are the Hazelnut and Chocolate. Tarts, cookies, breads, cakes and truffles galore!
I’ve yet to try any of their sandwiches or salads, but the aroma of everything from the baked goods to the food is quite inviting when some of the staff don’t seem to be. Oh well, croquembouche, macarons, frangipane over friendly staff for me!
Try to come in early… midday after lunch, the tarts, cookies, breads, cakes and truffles galore are pretty lacking in the display case.

There are some things in life that are totally worth feeling sick. Like going on roller coasters that drop really fast and have you wondering why you even went on in the first place (Drop Zone at Great America. twice.).
The other is the salted chocolate and caramel tart from Patisserie Philippe. Holy cow.
Chocolate makes me feel ill because of the caffeine. Chocolate is also too sweet for me for the most part, and I’m not a super huge fan. I don’t know what possessed me when I decided to order, at the last minute, this delectable creation. After all, I was really only there to get a pistachio macaron.
I’m not sure if it’s always this busy, but I happened to go on the Bay to Breakers Expo day, and it also was some academy’s graduation right around the corner, so it was packed inside. The line system is confusing; you order bakery goods at the same place you order sandwiches, so there were lots of people wondering who was going to take whose order. I just stepped up to the cashier and the girl said that even though she wasn’t technically supposed to get stuff for me (I was supposed to order from the line, then bring my order up to pay at the cashier or something), she’d do it because I only wanted two items.
The pistachio macaron was yummy, but I wish it would’ve had more pistachio flavor. But the chocolate/​caramel tart really took the cake, no pun intended. It was a rich, buttery smooth dark chocolate in a pastry shell lined with salted caramel, and there were dark chocolate shavings on top. Definitely a must for any chocolate-​lover.
The best part was that because I could only eat a little at a time, it held up really well sans refrigeration for almost a week, just sitting in a dark corner of my kitchen.
I’m totally a fan of this cute little place, and I definitely want to go back to try their other things when it’s not so crowded.

I’d heard some great things about Patisserie Philippe and it was great to finally go there. There were some very impressive looking items in the counter, but I finally chose the following:
Tarte Tatin — a French «apple pie» with caramelized apples that were sweet and rich and perfect. The pastry was buttery and soft and the entire thing was a nice decadent dessert.
Macarons (Cassis, Passion Fruit) — I’d never tried Cassis before and it was great — sweet with a bit of tartness and somewhat earthy. On the suggestion of Unilocaler friend Michelle T., I tried the Passion Fruit macaron and it was incredible… I loved the perfectness of the tart, which went so well with the sweet flavors. The macarons were perfect and just like what you’d find in Paris: the slightest and thinnest crispness on the outside, with a soft and chewy center.
Excellent sweets, excellent service… yeah, I’ll be going back again.

I come here for lunch on occasion, for my last sitting here I ordered:
— Chicken Tarragon
Organic chicken and fresh tarragon salad with lemon mayonnaise on sliced brioche.
— Pasta Pesto Chicken
Roasted organic chicken and tri-​color pasta with a creamy pesto dressing.
— Macarons
Famous French almond and egg white cookies. Assorted flavors.
The Chicken Tarragon sandwich served with a side of salade with a light vinaigrette was just delightful and fresh, verrry good. As for the Pasta Pesto Chicken, with tender pieces of chicken, perfectly cooked pasta with pesto… sooo very tasty/​flavorful. I crave for this when I’m there from time to time. Of course I couldn’t end the meal without any dessert and had to get one of my favorites my Macarons, the delicate soft tender cookie with a melt in your mouth filling, I had the Pistachio and Hazelnut, Tres Delicieux! Just a heads up, when you buy the Macarons here you might want to eat them soon after you buy them because I found out from a past experience that the filling melted when I took it to go.
This place will never disappoint! Lunch was Delicious here as always =) Walking into Patisserie Philippe you are tempted by all the wonderful French pastries laid out on the counter to all the mouth watering goodies savory and sweet behind the glass case. Service here is excellent, attentive, very friendly, and quality food you can taste that is just DELICIOUS =)

Hmm, I never wrote a review for this place?
We stumbled upon this place kind of randomly. I think we were driving by Adobe and were looking for food and noticed this little pastry shop and decided to walk in. That’s when we saw the beautiful macarons.
We bought a few, and walked back over to have food at some other place (which was not too memorable). Then we ate these as dessert. That’s when we realized we had found a gem!
Delicious.

A freak-​ing AMAZING.
I was brought these fine pastries after losing a competition and dude did they CHEER up my face.
1) the fruit pastries are not only DeLiCiOus but they smell like a FRUIT garden … ever so that everyone on the airplane wanted o know what was in my box
— Freshness, the fruits were PERFECT I got the apple and strawberry pastries! Sadly to say that the strawberries one are now out of season BOO! So on subsequent visits to northern california i couldn’t get my hands on one
2) Macaroons! I went back for the macaroons and rose just leaves me all giddy and feeling like i am a meadow with hundred of roses! I also love their other flavors: pistachio, coffee. My friends family basically DEVOuRed all of them by the time i came back from putting my stuff down
3) this minicake that is cooked till the outside is crispy is also filled with deliciousness: D
a GO to place if ur giong to SF to visit or if ur a local. Come early b/​c as the day winds down unfortunately there is less variety and pastries such as the yummy fruit tarts
Parking can be kind of tricky on the street and limited! So off peak hours are recommended.

The macrons here are fresh and consistently delicious. They have a variety of flavors including pistachio, early grey tea, raspberry and hazelnut. My favorite is the pistachio but they are all heavenly. The texture and size of the macron is perfect. For Halloween, I bought a special larger sized macron that had pumpkin filling, whipped cream with cranberries and it was to die for. Probably the best macron I’ve ever had. I wish I lived closer so I can keep coming back to try the rest of their pastries.

I was excited to try Patisserie Philippe because one of my favorite things to do when I was in Europe was stuff my face with their baked goods *confession*
The selection was a bit lean last Wednesday, but the staff said they had been unusually busy due to the holiday season. Still, I was able to score:
— Frangipane: Amazing! Moist and eggy with a slight glaze. LOVED this.
— Cranberry crumble cake: The fresh cranberries added a tartiness that contrasted nicely with the soft, crumbly cake
— Macarons: Pistachio and Early Grey tea! Must try other flavors next time.
— Fruit Tart
— Cinnamon raisin glaze roll

I like that the café had plenty of seating and fairly easy parking. They also sold pre-​packaged cookies and shortbread. Service was friendly and helpful. I’ll be back for more of their macarons and another slice of their oh-​so-​heavenly frangipane.

First time to Patisserie Philippe. I walked from SFMOMA which is a long walk, even from Civic Center Bart it’s far, but walkable. It’s a small bakery — maybe 7 tables and not too many chairs.
Everything looks good! I got a few things:
Canele — $ 1.50 — YUMMY. Get this! A bit crunchy, chewy, & creamy inside. Awesome!
Hazelnut macaron $ 1.75 — too thick, Pass. I like Paulette’s better.
pistachio macaron $ 1.75 — too thick, Pass. I like Paulette’s better.
Big giant Raspberry macaron $ 5.75 — lots of raspberries inside, 2 gold edible leaf on the top, buttercream inside, 2 cookie. Just ok.
My total $ 10.75. Credit cards taken. Parking in the street (metered) or parking garage next door (not sure how much). I didn’t see a bathroom for the public.
I’ll be back one day. Only 1 block away from Concourse Exhibition Hall.

There is so much good stuff at Patisserie Philippe. If one counter doesn’t charm your lunchtime palette, never fear — there is another counter of croissants, bread pudding, tarts, and many more baked goods. And then there’s ANOTHER counter of deletable macaroons and more.
I need to come back here MANY MORE TIMES to finish eating the whole store. For now, the bread pudding with chocolate chips and blueberries made my day. Month. Year.

Patisserie Philippe is a pastry shop in SOMA next to Adobe. It is a nice, small shop with a little dining area and a counter displaying several nicely presented baked goods. We went at breakfast time and they had a decent number of breakfast pastries (mostly sweet but a few savory ones as well). They also had a few cakes available.
I saw them putting out more stuff as the morning went on so you may need to come later in the afternoon to get the full selection of what Philippe has to offer. Their photos on Unilocal showcase a lot of stuff that we did not see when we went.
I went with the apple tart, which was pretty big. The apple tart’s puff pastry was kind of a mix between a puff pastry and a good pie crust. The puff pastry was crisp though maybe a tad too crisp and hard (there was a slight burnt taste to it). The puff pastry was topped with some good powdered sugar.
The apples were evenly sliced and topped a sweet caramel glaze. I would have preferred the apples warmer though and with more of a caramelization.
Service was friendly and good. Prices were reasonable. I think the pastries were under $ 3.
I liked Philippe enough to come back and try some of their other stuff if I was in the area again. Though I wasn’t a huge fan of their apple tart, a lot of their sweets looked good enough (especially that Pear Frangipane) to give this place a second shot.

Let me just say, I came in for the macarons, but I walked out with a bag full of carbs. The french accents do add a certain je né sais quoi to the place. Very charming shop.
I love love love the berry brioche. My friend gave me a reality check that I am probably loving a stick or 2 of butter and sugar, but I dont care. I swoon for the berry brioche packed with blueberries and just the right amount of sweetness and creaminess. Butter and sugar never tasted so good.
The baguettes and almond croissants were delicious as were the berry and chocolate madeleines. I was somewhat disappointed with the macarons though. IMHO, the pistachio was the best. Subtle and smooth, and not overly sweet. The passionfruit was a bit too tart for my liking. The espresso may have been old, but it was crazy dense.

This place is dangerous, even for someone without a sweet tooth.
Charming bakery café with big tall windows. Ample lighting creating a bright and lively atmosphere. Walk through the doors, a table of baskets filled with different assortments of madelines, merguines, and macarons. As you walk further into the café, displays of delectable pastries and cakes.
Besides sweets, Patisserie Philippe also has a menu of salads, sandwiches and other savory offerings.
Quiche Lorraine (
): A delicious quiche with bacon, onions and gruyère cheese. Reheated, the crust was warm and flakey. The egg was soft. The rest of the ingredients added nice textural and flavor components. Served with a simple green salad, what a great lunch!
St. Honore Cake (
): I couldn’t help but to satisfy my curiosity with this cake. Filled with rum custard, the puffs were crunchy due to its thick sugar glaze. Don’t be fooled, this individual size cake can feed more than one.

Feeling just a bit bakery deprived recently I’ve been visiting Patisserie Philippe more. As some of you may already know I work dangerously close to this French bakery. So close, in fact, that as soon as I step out the front door of my workplace I can almost smell the delicate scents of fresh baked French goodies whiffing by in the air.
A recent review by Unilocal friend Patty P., a French pastry expert in her own right, got me to try the Pineapple Upside-​Down Cake (
). The dessert was amazing as promised. The dense buttery cake is topped with strips of sweet pineapple in a brown sugary glaze.
Evelyn’s Cake (
) called out to me simply by her lovely appearance. If you like dark, rich, bittersweet chocolate and crunchy walnuts this is a dessert for you. I’m not much of a walnut fan, and I still loved it. The cake is a dense but moist yellow cake, and the dessert is dusted in powdered sugar and cocoa. With that it might leave you just a bit messy but oh so satisfied.
On one of my visits one of the workers threw in a free Financier. These are individual sized strips of hazelnut cake topped with a little fruit and some powdered sugar. Whatever his objective it worked because I was hooked. The Blueberry (
) is my favorite, but I have also had the Raspberry (
) and the Blackberry (

I noticed the Clafoutis (
) for the very first time yesterday. After purchasing one I returned to my workplace and found myself researching the dessert during my break. I learned that in the traditional Clafoutis’ the pits in the cherries are left intact as they emit an almond like flavor as they bake. Patisserie Philippe’s version is pretty authentic. The almond flavor in the lightly-​sweetened, gritty textured, custard-​like cake is very distinct, but the more I ate the richer the dessert seemed to get. Topped with slivered almonds and a sweet glaze be very careful when consuming this dessert because the pits are definitely intact within the big, robust cherries found throughout this dessert.
There’s still much that I haven’t tried at Patisserie Philippe, but one thing is for sure. Mostly everything I have tried I have found myself buying a second, third or even twentieth time. This place might be dangerously close to me, but it’s also dangerously delicious.

Great place to satisfy your sweet tooth with many pastries like madelines, palmiers, eclairs, fruit tarts, cookies, and yummy macarons!
The menu includes sandwiches (Café Madeleine is better), salads, and a few other savory items too. It’s a nice place to enjoy a latte with a decadent pastry. But the few available seats are usually taken, so I always order to go.
Great friendly and courteous service. Shop closes at 6pm, not open on Sundays.
