Grand Pu Bah

Will be honest. I come here at least once every two weeks. I keep coming back because the green curry is delicious. Seriously, one of the most yummy in the city. That’s close to my house but always consistently good.
Also, awesome lunch specials! If you want a good amount of food maybe opt for the meal-​size portion and skip the appetizers that come with the lunch special. Great place to have near work too!

Overall pretty good, I had the pad thai and was tasty. The service was quick and the price is pretty average for San Francisco.

One of the better Thai food experiences I have had in a while. Good tastes, Nice variety, clean and nice ambiance. We had the green curry, red curry, the eggplant plus potato and coconut samosas and fresh rolls. The appetizers were a little skimpy but the main enters were adequate in terms of quantity and of course quality.
Ill be back — I hope my next experience is just as great.

Had two great experiences with the green curry, but not a good one with the third one. The third curry was not the same quality as the first two.

I think the place is everything you’d expect from a Thai restaurant. We ordered the fried beef and pad see you. It was delicious. It was served on big plates so it didn’t appear to be a lot of food.
And maybe I was just really hungry but my friend and I finished the food and we walked away satisfied but probably could eat a little bit more.
The food was a little bit on the salty side.
The service was attentive. The staff was quick to seat me and ready to take my order. They also came back to refill my water cup. All the waiters and waitresses were helpful even though they didn’t wait on our table
They didn’t have enough condiments to go around so they passed it around the tables.
This place was really clean — they wiped up every spill and made sure the condiment tray was well stocked and wiped clean.
it is a good place but nothing that stood out. I will be back to try the other items on their menu and maybe I will update my review then.

Got carryout the pad Thai, ribs, spring rolls and ribeye kebob all of it was amazing the delivery took a long time but it was worth the wait

What a find! Fabulous green curry and prawns. The stickie rice came in a banana leaf. The bloody margarita was fresh and unique. We also loved the Thai iced tea crème brûlée. Staff and manager were delightful and polite. When I told the owner this was perhaps the best Thai food we’d ever had, she did a half curtsy/​bow.

I have loved this restaurant for nearly 10 years. This restaurant got me through two pregnancies, two infants, and two maternity leaves. I have been an undying fan. Even when the pad Thai price rose to a ridiculous $ 14, still I came. And loved.
Until tonight.
I ordered 4 dishes tonight, and rice. Out of 5 things, 4 were unacceptable.
1. The green curry was as fabulous as ever. Love.
2. The cashew nut beef used to be loaded with lovely sliced, gently sautéed beef. Tonight, it came with nasty, deep fried crispy beef that was more breading than beef, and a tiny quantity of deep fried crispy beef at that. Way too much oil, breading and no flavor in the beef. Gross.
3. The basil leaf chicken, which I have always gotten with sliced chicken, came with the tiniest amount of chicken I have ever seen out of this restaurant. The sliced chicken used to look like the chicken in the curry. This looked like white meat chicken bits.
4. They did not pack the jasmine rice in the container. When I got it, it was ¾ full. I mean, rice is sooo cheap. Why skimp on this aspect of an order??? Makes no sense.
5. And the worst of all… my beloved pad Thai, which was always hands down the best pad Thai in the city due to it’s lovely delicate lightly citrus flavor and elegant sauce, was coated in a layer of peanut butter. Ugh! My first cut of any Thai restaurant is whether it uses 1. ketchup, or 2. peanut butter in its pad Thai. Neither ingredient is in traditional pad Thai, and neither ingredient should be in any pad Thai in the city that costs $ 14!!!
Grand Pu Bah, I was loyal. But no longer :(

Have been here 3 or 4 times now, and every time it’s been just horrific service. The reason I finally decided to review this place, is because my colleague just came back from lunch here having found some kind of roach in his noodles!
A ROACH!
Anyway, the service here also sucks. They never bring out the right food at the right time — once I was still waiting for my appetizer while my group was well into their main course. Very awkward — I tried canceling my appetizer at that point but they wouldn’t let me. Every time I’ve been one or two people are left waiting for about ¹⁵⁄₂₀ mins longer than everyone else.
The waiters are all snarky and seem like they really don’t want you to be there.
Also, my friend got the Pad Thai and the serving was so small but they had compensated it visually by adding a million bean sprouts. I have a picture, it was that funny to look at.
Anyway, the roach did it for me. Won’t be back.

This place is so confusing to me. I have a love — strongly dislike relationship with Grand Pu Bah. Recently ordered a pick up with the «OrderAhead» app and went to get it — they were so crowded that they couldn’t get me my pick up order, which I could see on the bar, near the kitchen. So for 10 minutes I stood there, looking at it, looking at the incredibly busy staff and willing them to bring it to me, when they kept signaling to me that they’ll be right there. Finally I just walk right up and point out that I think my food has been sitting out for a while, then they quickly gave it to me. It said Thai Spicy on the receipt on the bag, and I was like «oh noes I ordered extra hot, hopefully I can eat this.» But, it ended up being mild. Like it usually is when I order pick up.
When I eat in this restaurant, probably once a month since it’s next to my work, they quickly want to take your order, bring your appetizers and food at the same time or at least overlapping. For a restaurant with average of ~$ 18 lunch entrée, you don’t necessarily want to be in and out in 20 minutes. All that being said, the food is great, and the restaurant is a nice place to sit and eat.
Because I eat here so often, I have a long pros and cons list that ends up being pretty consistent:
Pros:
— The food tastes great and is of high quality
— Service when dining in the restaurant is usually prompt
— Food is authentic Thai — came here with a Thai friend and she commented on this
— Cocktails are yummy, especially the «Sly Thai»
Cons:
— Feel a little rushed in the restaurant
— Expensive for thai — I don’t want to say overpriced because the quality is good, but it’s more expensive than your average Thai meal
— Spice inconsistency — I’ve ordered Extra Hot a couple times and it had literally no heat (this is better than too hot but I’d still like some spice!)
— Underserviced during busy times, like today (Friday) at lunch
I will continue coming here for excellent food, but not on days when I’m hell bent for spicy.

I give it 5 stars cause for me Thai food means Yellow Curry with brown rice. and no one makes better yellow curry with brown rice than these guys.
I tried the same thing at all the restaurants in SF. (nearly) and the top 3 are:
1. Grand Pu Bah
2. Siam Lotus (Haight St)
3. Thep Phanom Thai (Lower Haight, although a bit high on spice).
The yellow curry I get is customized:
1. Vegan
2. No potato or kombucha squash
3. Add Mushroooms instead
4. Soft Tofu
5. All kinds of green veggies (broccoli, asparagus etc.)

My girlfriend had her birthday dinner here last year. We had a huge group, probably about 10 people, so we were able to sample a bunch of different dishes.

The food is similar to upscale Asian fusion. My favorite dishes were the two dungeness crab ones. The meat was sweet and tender. Out of the apps, I liked the carpaccio. The yuzu ponzu added a great citrus kick. The angry bird was also really cute and playful. And the prawn in clay pot was delish. I love clear noodles. The dessert was also really pretty. I adore fresh fruit!
For drinks, I tried the Bah Bah noom ($ 10)
. It was refreshing but also had a spicy kick. Actually complemented the food well.
Service was great since we had a huge party. The staff kept the drinks flowing and the food coming. Everything was paced well. Ambiance has a slightly modern upscale vibe, but manages to still feel casual and comfy.
Great place to have a group dinner. We felt taken care of and had a wonderful time.

Went over for a team lunch on a Wednesday.
Nice atmosphere and quite crowded for a sit down restaurant setting during lunch hour so it must be good, right?
ITS AITE.
Service: Waitress was nice, but because of the architecture/​set up of tables of the restaurant it was extremely hard to hear/​understand her. We didn’t all get our food at the same time so it was a bit awkward waiting an extra 15 minutes just for the last dish to arrive. The waitress noticed and made sure to rush that last dish though!
Food: I ordered a Thai-​tea, was pretty good but not enough flavor and overwhelmed with too much sugar. Everyone on the table seemed to think that my dish looked the most delicious but I found some issues with it. I ordered Pad Ke Mao with seafood added in for some protein, but when I they say its an addition to the dish they LITERALLY meant boil some seafood and dump it into the mix. The flavor of the noodles were spot on, but flavorful taste did not penetrate the seafood AT ALL. I felt like I was eating decently cooked boiled seafood with no flavor. =/​
Overall, pretty solid dishes and service but could definitely use some improvements.

Good lunch spot and happy hour spot. Once they had pork belly apps and those were my go to but no longer. Other apps are good and they don’t skimp on spice. For lunch, get one of the soups, really flavorful broths and filling meats.

Atmosphere is very nice, modern, clean and upscale (square plates etc). Has a very nice large bar. Service was decent but seemed as if they would have been overwhelmed if the restaurant were crowded.
Food is quite good but not amazing (Cha Am is still the best Thai in the city). Prices are reasonable (about $ 30 per person… slightly higher than typical for SF, but average for the neighborhood).

OK, so their menu has basically been overhauled since my last review… and there are some new winners and losers. Right to the winners:
Roti! (Listed as a «small plate» but get it as an appetizer.) Yes, roti is good at lots of places. And damn good here. My fellow diners had not had this before and they were all blown away by it. Fried bread + yellow curry = magic. Yum.
Sizzling Spicy Prawns appetizer: yum, but eat them right away. They come out sizzling hot and lose a bit of flavor if you let them sit.
Buddha’s Belly! This entrée was vegetarian, and included at least four varieties of mushroom, at least two of which managed to soak up tons of flavor from the broth. It surprised all of us by being fantastic and probably the most popular entrée overall. Damn that was good… I want it now.
Lychee Duck — still amazingly rich fatty boneless slices of duck with some yellow curry sauce.
We also had a couple beef dishes that suffered from overcooked, dried out beef. Can’t recommend those.
For drinks the Rainforest seems to have gotten much sweeter than last time (but it was still really good) and of course you can’t beat Singha for the easiest smoothest beer in the history of ever. Also they have a «double chocolate martini» which is exactly what it sounds like (recipe: 1:1:1 chocolate liqueur (18%), Bailey’s, and vodka). And the gunslinger was utterly delicious: whiskey, ginger, D. benedictine, Peychaud’s bitters, lemon peel).

Came here on lunch with some coworkers. We had a reservation and they were great about having the table ready. It’s got the standard thai menu. But the very nice part is there lunch combo. for 13.95 you can get TWO appetizers and a entrée with your choice of meat (they do charge more depending on chicken/​fish/​tofu). I was expecting two tiny apps but they brought out a nice plate with the two entrees in the beginning and then my lunch. It was quite a lot of food for the price.

3.5 stars for the food. They have really fast delivery. We got our food in 35 mins on a Saturday night! Half a star for the fast delivery!
Here’s what we ordered
. Pad thai w. Prawns. Just ok. Pretty average. I feel like it didn’t have enough flavor. Not bad just not impressive.
. Sizzling beef. This dish was really tasty. You can really taste the flavors from the herbs and sauce. Good portions for the price!
. Eggplant dish with duck. This dish was also good. Full of flavor and oily but you would expect that when eating duck.
. Pineapple fried rice. 4 stars. Good flavor but not overwhelming flavor like some fried rice I’ve had. Try this if you like fried rice.
Overall I would order from here again if want good take out at a reasonable price! This place is worth a try!

We came here for a baby BDAY. Grand Pu Bah is such a nice spot, spacious, airy, and chic. I like the bar, good selection, even wines and bubbly. It was nice to see Moet & Chandon by the glass, much needed for this girl.
We ordered quite a bit of food because it was 30 of us. Grand Pu Bah was accommodated nicely the whole evening. The food was Thai, Singaporean, Malaysian, fusion style. The dishes were all decent and generous portion.
Service was nice and they were always checked up on our group, from refill the water, to get us more drinks.
We would definitely check back for happy hour and more dishes at the bar.

Just had drinks and a calamari appetizer.
The cocktails were good. Calamari was horrible. Overcooked and tough.
Service at the bar was a bit slow.
