Specialties

We will often combine the ash scattering with a sailing tour of the bay. Our guests have found this combined approach makes the whole event more memorable and enjoyable. Families appreciate that the ashes are scattered from a fine racing yacht and feel this type of ceremony is very appropriate. We can provide food and drink along with the memorial service.

We can accommodate up to 25 people for ash scatterings.

We are licensed with the California State Cemetery and Funeral Bureau (Lic # CRD878). We will handle all of the required paperwork and filings.

History

Established in 2003.

Neptune Memorials offers private scattering of ashes & memorial services from our luxury yacht on San Francisco Bay. We provide dignified, affordable services for over ten years.

The San Francisco Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, Angel Island and the Pacific Ocean have special meaning and a beautiful place to release ashes into the sea.

The Santa Cruz 50 — Bay Wolf is an excellent yacht for scattering ashes. She is stable and comfortable. There is plenty of room to move around and people enjoy the ride and the sights and sounds of San Francisco Bay. Setting the sails as we sail back under the Golden Gate Bridge has been a special occasion for many families and friends.

Business Owner

I have been sailing most all of my life. My father built a 25 foot boat when I was a kid. In high school and college I spent lots of time playing around with boats.

Stanford — I came to California to complete my graduate work in Engineering at Stanford. I then worked in the US and overseas for 20 years and still stayed active with sailing — racing and cruising in San Francisco Bay, Carribean and East Coast.

In 2002 I decided to form the sailing business and have enjoyed the transition. I really enjoy sailing in San Francisco Bay and the enthusiasm and two excellent yachts make for a great charter experience. I enjoy getting people out on the water.

Long Voyages

I completed a trip across the Pacific in April 2002 — from the Galapagos to the Marquesas (3000 miles and 22 days at sea). It was a great experience.

From October 2008 to June 2009 I completed a 5000 mile trip to southern Mexico and back aboard Bay Wolf (our Santa Cruz 50). Another great experience.

We had a wonderful group tour of the San Francisco bay about a week ago. Captain Kirk made a special arrangement to accommodate our short schedule. The tour was operated by Captain Sparky. The whole event was organized seamlessly. All 12 of our guests are very satisfied with the experience.

Neptune Memorials provided a perfect sailing expedition for our ash scattering ceremony. They were incredibly respectful, sensitive to our family’s emotional needs, expert conductors at sea, and the exact kind of professional we needed in a time of grieving. We did add on the catering option and the food was tasty and a nice addition to have with the experience. The Captain’s and crews vibe was supportive and reminded me of being among sea angels. Thank you for providing such a beautiful experience for us to celebrate the lives of the two people we lost.

Neptune’s Memorials was by far the best choice! Captain Kirk and Captain Joe were great. It was our first time doing an ash scattering but they made the process easier and more calming. I highly recommend their service and will definitely use it again for other types of events. Captain Kirk has many years of experience and both gentleman were very personable and helpful in carrying out our loved ones wishes.

My mom’s cancer presented itself and challenged us in a way that life never teaches us to be prepared for. The cancer quickly appeared just as fast as she passed away, but she did manage to escape long term suffering and pain. Being able to settle ourselves with knowing she is free flowing in a place we knew that made her truly happy helps us celebrate her life and not morn her death.
In preparing for my mom’s burial at sea, I contacted 5 organizations to assist my family with the services. Neptune Memorials was the only company that was reasonable, helpful, and quick to respond. I appreciated their commitment to helping people like us in these situations along with their professionalism, knowledge, and patience. Everything from my first phone call to their office on a Sunday, to the sail boat, Captain/​crew, and private scattering was a positive experience and will always be a good memory of how we were able to say goodbye to my mom.
Captain Kirk helped me over the phone making arrangements and was very thorough with explaining the process and patient with my (repeated) questions and concerns. Captain Dogen and crew member Jeff picked us up on the sail boat and helped us feel comfortable and secure. Within minutes I knew I made the right decision choosing this company to be with me and my family to share such a personal experience.
A few days after the scattering, I had even more questions about the service and both Captain Kirk and Dogen were quick to respond and continued to be helpful. Good ol’ fashion customer service is a rare to find now-​a-​days and now I realize how much I took it for granted in the past. I also found out that they regularly donate portions of trip fees to non-​profit organizations and charities.
I look forward to going on a future sail with them on one of their regular charters, under different circumstances of course… maybe even sail lessons? I guess the real test is if they could tolerate me… :)

These people were awesome. We chartered the Bay Wolf for an ash scattering for my Mother who passed away last summer. Jason was a captain and he was just wonderful. A couple family members were running a bit late and he was very patient with us over it. His assistant was also wonderful. I think her name was Shawnace but I could be wrong. Either way she was very helpful when it came time to get the ashes ready. I would highly recommend them. Even the lady who answers the phone, Sue, was awesome. Can’t wait to charter a tour of the bay.

Neptune Memorials is awesome.
Mom died last year without warning, and it was quite a shock to my family. Sure, she smoked three packs a day for over 60 years and didn’t take care of herself, but other than that, she was in reasonable health.
Her last wishes for her burial was to be cremated and given a burial at sea. Thankfully, she didn’t say exactly where or when that should take place; my brother and I would have failed on both counts. We figured that given her lifestyle, her favorite resting place would have been in the pool at the Bellagio. Yeah, she was that kind of mom. Since that would have been tacky even for us, we decided to look at the coast.
We found Neptune Memorials through a random search of sea burials. Since I’m from Sacramento, any coastal area would have sufficed, but Neptune Memorials seemed to be reasonably priced and had a choice of vessels. I don’t think I’ve ever been sailing, so that wasn’t much of a concern; to me if it floats, it’s a boat. All boats are the same to someone as inexperienced as I was.
I wasn’t sure what to expect as I’ve never had to arrange a funeral before. Turnover is relatively low in my family, so it’s not every day that I’m having to say goodbye to a loved one.
We sailed out with Captain Doug and his crew member Dogen. They were very professional, attentive, and made my family welcome and at ease. They appeared to know exactly what they were doing (ie, we didn’t die and they used nautical sounding terminology when speaking). My young children didn’t truly understand what was happening, but they did have a great time, and both Doug and Dogen were able to patiently answer all their questions. The boat we sailed on, the «Bay Wolf» was a super nice sailboat, and we were told was designed to race between California and Hawaii.
I’m not really sure what that means, but even apart from the burial and somber words we shared, we had a lot of fun. My brother and I joked that we can’t wait for the next family member to die! Just kidding, Dad. :)
