I have been a client since I moved from NYC over twenty years ago. I will not allow anyone else to touch my skin. The staff is professional and know skin! Their approach is clinical and they do an amazing job of cleansing the skin of impurities.

I used this spa just for cleanings, and it was fine, before I decided to do some treatments .What a mistake!!! She literally ruined my décolleté area. She burned me so deep, my skin now after 6 months is very uneven, have VISIBLE scars and just looks ugly. I have holes in my skin! I can’t wear open neck/​shoulders outfits anymore! Right after they burned me, i went to see Mary. She looked at me, and said she can suggest free make up to cover the burns, What?! They never suggested anything to help me to heal better. It also turns out the person who worked on me was not a RN, it was aesthetician, who hardly speaks english. Im not sure, but procedures they offer, must be be done by professionals, not aestheticians.
I learned my lesson, but the attitude of this spa is beyond irresponsible.

I have been going to Mary The’ for over ten years now. I have consistently gotten great service and have a wonderful rapport with my esthetician Sarah. She is the best! The salon is clean and conveniently located right off the Bay Bridge. Sarah offers deep cleaning and gives honest advice without pushing product unnecessarily. Did I mention Nita, the front desk gal is the sweetest? If you are looking for a quality facial, choose Mary The’ :)

Mary has been doing this work for 38 years and knows more about skin care than any person I’ve ever known. I started seeing her when I was in my mid-30’s and now, in my 70’s, I still consider a visit to Mary the best thing I can do for my aging skin. She can tell at a glance exactly what procedure to use on me that day – and because she’s always learning new techniques and ever up on the latest improvements in her field, I know that when I visit her, I’m getting a state-​of-​the-​art professional care. No one is as good, here or elsewhere. I’ve sent my children to Mary; I’ve sent my former husband to Mary; and if I could, I’d send my dog to her! She’s that good! I only worry that she won’t still be doing skin care when I’m an octogenarian.

I have used Unilocal for years but never wrote a review on Unilocal.However, after reading all the Unilocal review on Mary The Skin Care, I felt that it is time to pay it back.
Being a overworked professional, I have to take extra care of my skin. I am in my mid 40’s and people aways ask me what I do to keep my skin looking so young. Mary The is my skin care secret. Mary The is not just a spa where you get your facial. They take a clinical approach to skin care and really cleans your skin and more importantly, teach you how to take care of your own skin. I have been a client of Mary The Skin for 16 years. Most of their clients have been clients for a long time and this says more about this business than people who visit Mary The once during Spa Week.
If you are looking for a spa to pamper yourself, this is not the place for you. If you are serious about skin care and want to look better and healthier, this is the best place for you.
My routine is a facial every other month with Microdermabrasion. Cindy is my aesthetician and she is excellent at extractions, which I need a lot of. Make sure you meet Mary as you can learn a lot from her, as I have over the years.
There, my secret is out. and I am setting the record straight for the unfair reviews.

i’m all about the maintenance. i don’t just start taking care of things when they start breaking, i make sure they dont break. so yeah, having clear radiant skin all the time is key. getting the best facialist is a crucial part of that. I go to Deborah at Mary The Salon. My biggest fear used to be her retiring. in fact, i sometimes feel like i moved to nyc so i could leave her before she left me. And for the first two years, i flew back every month to get a facial with her. I swear within 3 facials she can give you clear skin. At least she did for a few of my friends and me. And then on top of that she can help give you beautiful skin. The post facial recovery time with her is 3 days on average.

I won’t deny she gives a great facial. There is no timer, she just goes until she’s done. You skin is beautiful after. She sells great products. But seriously, it’s HELLA expensive. I had a friend tell me its cheaper for her to fly to NYC and get a facial and fly home than go to Mary. And I kinda believe her…

I love when Spa Week comes around because $ 50 is such a great deal for pampering. What gal doesn’t like to be pampered? Not I! I took the day off from work and went with Tammy N. to get a facial. We ran late but luckily it wasn’t a problem. What’s even better is that they didn’t end our treatments early. As a matter of fact, it even ran longer than 50 minutes. The place is really nice and clean. It had the comfy feel of a home with sleek, modern décor. The entire staff is very friendly and welcoming.
My aesthetician, Sarah, introduced herself and had me fill out a quick questionnaire before bringing me to the room where all the (facial) magic happens. She was very professional and knowledgeable and kept me informed of what was happening. She used 2 different products on my face and at the end of my facial, pushed me to buy them. I ended up buying one of the products… I like it but I’m not too sure if it’s worth the $ 50. She wasn’t too pushy, otherwise I would’ve been annoyed and wouldn’t have bought anything.
When everything was done and it was time to pay, the receptionist informed me of the SpaFinder deal for next week. They have a micro-​dermabrasion special for only ½ off the regular price of $ 200…pretty good deal. It’s pricey here, especially if you purchase their recommended products. Because of the cost, I won’t be a regular customer but I’d come back during Spa Week again: o)

The best place for facials. Expensive but worth it. Thorough extractions.

I tried Mary The’ today for a 50 min facial as a part of spa week. Overall, my experience was okay.
What I liked about them:
Salon looked nice and clean. The people were friendly and welcoming. A lot of time was devoted to extractions though there were not enough time to do my whole face, she only did my nose and the left side of my face. My esthetician put make up on me after the facial so I don’t have to walk out looking all greasy and oily.
What I didn’t like:
The neck and shoulder massage was disappointing, she didn’t apply any pressure at all and it didn’t feel good. It was really hard to relax during the facial because the room was too warm and bright and my esthetician kept talking to me during the entire session about my skin and pushing me to buy their products. Of all the places I’ve ever tried, I feel like this place is the pushiest when it comes to buying the products after the facial.

I’ve had facials at top spas in NYC, London, HK, Tokyo, LA, SF and this one is the most effective!
My skin was clear and glowed within 3 visits! Cleared up all the clogged pores and blackheads thoroughly. So, I am a loyal client for past year going monthly.
I don’t need expensive products or MedSpas that may make my skin ultimately weaker w/​all the intrusive machines.
Mary and team of estheticians use best method & products from all over the world that fits my skin condition — was irritated and stressed from too much work and travel. And I like that Mary seems to continue to educate herself on new methods/​products for her and her team to offer to clients.
Facial and Microderm can be a little pricey, like the other reviewer said. But I think this small investment into having beautiful skin for me is worth it.
Now I’m a believer in what an effective esthetician can do for me.

It’s always a pleasure getting personalized facials and knowledgable skin care advice from Mary. She really puts her heart in her work and does an amazing job.
The service and the products are relatively high cost, but they are also high value. I recommend Mary very highly.

A friend recommended Mary Thé to me back when the spa was on Maiden Lane. I was a regular for years, going once a month for my first 18 months for various facial treatments. Yes, I spent a lot of money, but my skin was fantastic looking.
When they moved to their current SOMA location, it just seemed too removed from BART. I mean really what is up with driving into the The City? Mass transit for me, baby.
So, three years passed and my skin looked not so good. I took a deep breath, made an appointment, and headed out. The walk from the Montgomery St BART is relatively easy and a nice bit of outdoor exercise.
The new spot is cramped, there are no private rooms as in the previous location, and the service is still expensive. Hmmm.
However, Deborah continues to deliver quality service. She is gently, adept, and isn’t pushy when it comes to product promo. My usual treatment includes the deep cleaning facial and micro-​dermabrasion. You really want someone who is an experienced clinician doing the dermabrasion because if the exfoliation is uneven your skin will come out looking like a bad map. Deborah is the best.
I am scheduled for another appointment. Love the way my face looks, but really don’t feel that the costs match the experience. Have been to Red Door and Nordstrom Spa in The City and received excellent massages, so am thinking I might switch to one of them for my facials. They are closer to mass transit and you receive private treatments, not shared room experiences.

I went for spa week. Maybe it’s because I was getting a cheaper facial that I didn’t have a good enough experience to want to go back. First off, location of the spa. I was brought down to a room that was directly facing the street and it was super bright because the windows were big. No curtains. I pretty much heard the traffic right off of third street the whole time.
Secondly, the lady who treated me seemed to have left for a long time and eat her lunch because she burped in my face when she got back and I could smell the food. It also seemed that the same microwave that they were heating the towels in, they were warming up their food in there as well.
Maybe don’t go there during lunch time?
I also felt more pushed to buy products than most other spas.

I’ve been going to Mary The on and off since 2001. I had problematic acne skins with a lot of scarring. I have to say that Mary The and my esthetician, Debbie, have done a great job and a very thorough deep pore cleansing. Especially for my wedding preparation, my skin was so glowing and all the blackheads and whiteheads were pretty much gone.
I have yet to find another one like it in bay area despite I’ve been to a lot of spas all over (from cheap to expensive).
I have to admit that the sales pitch can be pretty initimidating at times and they can be pretty pushy for certain things.
I haven’t been back to this place for about a year now. There are few reasons. First, because I no longer lived in San Francisco and it was quite a drive for me to get to this place. Secondly, the facial is definitely not cheap (though perhaps it’s worth it). So for all the gas + tips + cost, I am definitely priced out for this but if you can afford it and tell them to tone down with the sales pitch, I think you will find that this place offers the best deep pores cleansing in bay area.

I have been a client at Mary The Skin Care for 12 years. I first went to Mary The because I was just entering my thirties and my skin was changing. My doctor put me on prescription medication to deal with the acne. At the recommendation of a good friend, I tried Mary The because he told me that her skin care approach got him off all prescription medication for acne. Well, he was right. Within 3 months I was no longer using any medication and my skin was vibrant and healthy. Mary’s approach and cutting edge technology is the best in the area. All the astheticians are knowedgable and caring.
The treatments truly help promote and help sustain healthy skin. If you want serious skin care and a great education, this is best in San Francisco.

ok, so the receptionist called to follow up about 2 weeks after the facial… and I told her exactly what was going on (also mentioned that a couple of the products that I did end up purchasing were irritating my skin). She said that Mary would be calling as she was interested in my feedback.
And… well… I’m still waiting!
Hmm… why am I even surprised?

For spa week I decided to set aside my fears of seeing an esthetician since for some reason my face decided to misbehave. Scored an appointment the same day. The receptionist was warm and friendly. When I entered the reception area, I was greeted by Cindy, my esthetician for the day.
My facial lasted for an hour beginning with steam, extractions, a mask and a light massage. Of course, she recommended a slew of products to use. Now that I think about it, she was a little pushy with it. As I left, she told me that I shouldn’t have any scaring and my redness would go away within a few hours. Of course the other half couldn’t help but call me rudolph the red nosed reindeer.
The next day, my skin was smoother but there was still redness and I noticed that I was beginning to scar in some of the areas were the extractions were made. Two days later my instinct was right and I had scars… just great!

UPDATE: So 2 weeks after my experience, Mary The called me to follow up. She invited me to come in and let her make it right. BONUS points to any business person who recognizes they have an unhappy customer and want to make it right– for free! Mary spent about 3 hours on my facial and was actually very helpful and good at what she did. I felt like it should have been like that the first time I went in there… I walked out feeling clean and the appt. was actually helpful! So that was the redemption appt., I’m curious to see how my next appt. will go… will Unilocal and let you know
So I visited this spa for Spa Week and I can say that I was not very happy at all with my facial. I went in for a facial with extractions and I spent over 30 out of my 60 minutes waiting in a chair for my esthetician Cindy to return from what I assume was her lunch. She told me I needed to make another appt. so she could really do a good facial… what was I there for then? My complexion is actually pretty clear with a small problems around my T Zone. Perhaps instead of letting me sit around in a chair for 30 minutes, she could have been working. So this visit cost me $ 50 with spa week, but regularly it’s $ 135. I would never pay $ 135 to nap in a chair.

I’ve been visiting Mary The-​Skin Care for several years. The staff there is really personable and knowledgeable! I feel like I get personalized treatments every time I go. They spend lots of time explaining how their products help my skin. They don’t want you to spend money on things you don’t believe are actually going to help you.
Mary The is the greatest… my pores always feel extra clean when she works on my skin… though treatments are more expensive when she does them. Everyone else on the staff is really nice. Nita always calls to confirm my appointments and always remembers who I am when I walk through the door.
They just moved to a great new office in South Park. Parking can be a problem around there… I wouldn’t recommend making an appointment during a ballgame!
I’m more than happy to spend $ 100s every month! If you are looking for a cheap facial, this is not the place.
