KOFY TV 20 Dance Party -80’s Style

When people ask me why I think the SF Bay area is the most disturbing area of the US in which I’ve lived, I sometimes send them a link for the KOFY TV 20 Dance Party. This shuts them up immediately, or at least it does right after they ask me if this is real and I reply that it is. People from around the globe can’t believe the stories I tell them about the 10 years I’ve lived and worked in the SF Bay area. When I send them links from the KOFY TV Dance Party, they begin to ask more questions. They ask questions like why do adults act like this? Who in their right mind would knowingly subject themselves to ridicule by participating in something so ridiculous? I often get this question from friends in NY and LA…“Are people in the bay area so desperate to be on television that they would participate in something so absurd?” To which I reply, «Sadly, yes.»
I can understand kids in high school, junior high or elementary school wanting to do this. What is disturbing is the adults, how they act, how very histrionic their behavior is, and that some producer actually earns their money coming up with ideas like this. That’s the REAL crime. Some of my acquaintances from other countries have forwarded the links around to their friends that have scheduled vacations to San Francisco and NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM thought it was fun, funny, ironic, or cool. I’ve gotten feedback using words like… pathetic, sad, troubling, bizarre, desperate, and beyond comprehension. It seems like the only people who think this is worthwhile are the very desperate attention-​seekers who waste their time participating in it.
The first few years I lived in the SF Bay area as a Cal student, no one believed me when I would tell them how immature the adults in SF behaved, how adults were obsessed with wearing costumes, public nudity, public displays of extreme sexual deviance, drug use, and other psychopathic endeavors. I actually think my friends in LA thought I was lying. My friends in NY would just look at me as though something had changed about me… in a bad way… since I’d left the East Coast. When the KOFY Dance Party started, I finally had evidence I could send them. No one questions me any further, except to ask why I still live there when the culture is so emotionally stunted.#adultclubkids

Two and a half years after my first taping experience, this FREE dance party is still a must-​do for Bay Area residents and visitors. My boyfriend’s niece had a choice between visiting the Golden Gate Bridge or being on Dance Party back in December and chose to come down to KOFY Studios with me. It’s Season 5 and the formula is the same: rock the 80s gear, dance to about 10 80s hits, cheer for game show challenge contestants, take lots of photos.
Basic info:
Tapings are held at noon, 2pm, and 4pm on Saturdays every 4 to 6 weeks during the typically five month long taping schedule. One taping is usually themed (yesterday featured the 90s. So bummed to have missed it!) Check Facebook for event details.
What has changed in two years?
You can no longer park in the studio lot, across the street (though some of us do) or on Chavez. Studio staff has gotten better at sending the stumbling drunks home (very important considering somebody left last taping in an ambulance.)
What else to know?
With four seasons under its belt, the show has its core group of regulars that stand in line for each taping. So if you really want to be part of an episode, arrive at least an hour before a taping to make sure you get a coveted taping pass. Yesterday, my friend brought along chairs to make our stay in line more comfy.
