Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation – Lawton

So let me start how disappointed I am but let’s go on the list all employees staggering in the halls laughing not doing their jobs second they visit patients like every two hours third this is a rehabilitation center so in a lot of cases infections are being treated I can’t tell you how dirty was it under patients beds I don’t know how this place is being ran but it is horrible from my experience visiting my relative

Horrible experience here.
My elderly uncle, who is weak from previously suffering heart problems, came here after being discharged from a hospital with a bone fracture. Originally we picked this place because through word of mouth we thought it was a good place. Little did we know how disappointed we would be.
The exercises the rehab center put my uncle through made him worse. His mood fell into depression and he felt miserable all the time. He actually lost what mobility he had left after the fall. Even worse, on one occasion they let him fall out of bed, landing on the floor.
After only a couple of weeks with his recovery still not complete, the rehab center said they have to kick him out to shuffle in a new patient. Our pleas for him to stay longer fell on deaf ears.
Never recommending this place to anyone ever.

My wife fell, fractured her hip, surgery requiring two rods pinned. After surgery she was sent to this rehab center. You should know that she is an Occupational Therapist and has been the director of the OT department of San Francisco Laguna Honda Hospital for at least 25 years and has been an OT for over 40 years. She wants me to express her total satisfaction with Kindred-​Lawton Rehab Center. It is excellent and superb for the care and attention given to her. The Rehab Center is very caring and efficient and she received excellent care at this facility and highly recommends it.

Reading over the reviews for Lawton Healthcare I notice there are good and not so good reviews, but the majority seem to be written by people who have had loved ones at the facility and I could not find one from a resident’s point of view. Well, I am currently a resident of Lawton Healthcare and I could not be more satisfied.
I am recovering from a below the right knee amputation and have been at Lawton since June 12^th; roughly almost 2 months. As the EMTs gurneyed me into the facility, the front desk staff smiled and waved. I’m sure they see many a frightened or worried expression; I guess I was in a daze. But my first impression was the brightness of the place (more lated). Once placed into my bed I met my CNA Ofelia, a very kind a nurturing woman who I know look as a sister rather than a CNA. She was the first staff member I met and I thought if the staff is anything like her I have come to a great place.
The next day a therapist came to my room to evaluate me; I got to stand for a couple of minutes and I felt good, and then of course realized «sheesh, I’m already undergoing therapy!»
Before delving to the other staff, let me talk about the therapists that work here… AWESOME men and women who use tough love to make their patients get better. I have been fortunate to work with Joe– a humorous, music loving young man who does not baby me at all. He is very careful and supervises but makes sure I do the exercises correctly. And if they are improperly done, he takes the time to correct or even demonstrate. The same with Ernie– with her infectious laugh– she is a tough cookie but wants nothing but all of us to get well. Kelly is my occupational therapist and she is also tough but with a sense of humor. Thanks to therapy my upper body strength is improving. Frank, Paul, Ashka have also worked with me and have made me sweat… but all worth it! Lastly, the «Reverend Mother» of the therapy department, Cathy, is kind and wants her therapists to be the best of the best and I think she has that already.
The nurses and CNAs are amazing… very kind, giving, caring and so busy. Lia, Baby, Jinky, Emily, Matt, Rosario, Elizabeth, Jocelyn and Nana– professionals all of them and compassionate. My CNAs are many. Rebecca, Rafael and John– happy to help and always with a smile or even singing a song. Lalaine and Myrna have become my «Lucy and Ethel» as we laugh about many things and I appreciate them when I transport to a bathing chair– they are ever so careful as I get into it. Always there when I need them, even for something trivial. Trudi is wonderful and kind and is attempting to teach me how to say «thank you» in Burmese. Bob, Alex and Jose are super men. Jose weighs me and I love it when I learn I have not gained weight! There are others who are part of the nursing staff who also take time to say hello… Amalia, Nayleen, Bo. BTW, Jose and Bo are accomplished musicians who on occasion play the piano and sing for the residents.
Housekeeping? Incredible men and women who keep Lawton spotless– Lito, Aida, Zenaida, Chandra and Ken. I try to say hello to them because they work here and if it were not for them the place would be a mess. It is nice to greet them and they look surprised when a resident greets them.
Saroj is the activities director and truly an angel. She makes sure her residents are happy and eat healthy. She reminds some of us that we cannot eat certain things, but always with humor and not condescending. She is one of the reasons I am enjoying my stay here. Cory is the activity director on weekends and is hospitable and ever most friendly and just very caring to all. Al is the concierge; actually he does many things that amaze me. He has us laughing if someone leaves the front door open with his now iconic «do they think we’re in a barn?» Beth is my «angel.» The «angels» are men and women who are assigned rooms and they visit to ask how everything is going– whether good or bad. Beth visits everyday and is always smiling and in a great mood.
I’d like to mention and commend the administrative staff. Salam is with the nursing staff and we can talk to her about anything… from her work to her favorite food. She will come and chat if she is not busy, even if it’s for a few minutes. Lastly, Melissa is the director of Lawton. She is energetic, always smiling and genuinely concerned about her staff and residents. I am happy to say we converse about many things. I’ve yet to be in a place where an administrator circulates among the facility (no matter how large or small it can be). She personally brought me my mail one day… with her wonderful smile and cheery voice.
So there you have it– from a patient’s point of view. Upon my return home I will probably write a final summation of my stay. I am looking forward to returning home to my doggie and my bed– thanks to Lawton Healthcare it will be a wonderful transition!

My boyfriend’s grandma was here for a little over 2 weeks after a weeklong stay at the hospital for a stroke. When she was admitted to the Lawton rehabilitation facility, my boyfriend’s mom was there to discuss her health conditions with the nurses to help them establish baselines.
We were impressed by how the social director, Serocj, proactively came to meet with both of them of them to find out how she could help make grandma’s stay more comfortable. She asked about what grandma’s interest were and what she liked to do before the stroke. After being made aware that grandma liked to dine in the dining room and interact with other patients, she made sure to take grandma to the dining room for lunch and dinner. The social interaction she had during her stay seemed to make grandma happy and helped her feel more comfortable.
The team at the Lawton rehabilitation facility really took the time to make sure grandma was comfortable. Chris, a nurse at the facility, noticed grandma’s poor skin condition on her heels that was causing her pain. He immediately recommended her to wear pressure relief boots and subsequently recommended to have a pair for her to take home. Thanks to his attention to detail and caring, she hasn’t complained about pain since then.
Both groups of physical therapists and occupational therapists did an excellent job; they worked with grandma daily to help her regain her strength. They welcomed us to visit and be there while they were working with grandma so that they knew how grandma was before the stroke and what they needed to work on with her. The Social Service Director, Sean, proactively got in touch with his family to discuss plans for post rehab and helped us set expectations. Now that she’s home, we’re thankful to the team at Lawton for showing us how to continue her rehab at home.

I miss getting up in the morning going here. My father has stayed here for over a month for rehab after a stroke; being physically impaired on his right side and his speech was slurring and was not able to talk much, he needed a lot of care. Our family members are really close, so we were able to be by his side every minute. The Kindred staffs were really accommodating to our needs and wants. Going here was becoming a routine for us – we knew the staffs like members of our family. The front desk, the nursing team, and especially the CNAs and the therapy team (OT, PT, speech therapist) worked really hard to help assist and improve my father’s condition. I can’t recall all the names of these helpful staff members that I met, but Selam, the Director of Nursing, was really helpful from the first day I met her when she gave me the tour around the facility. «Al» was great with all the residents – he always came by to greet us with a smile, asked how we were doing, and made sure that we were getting all we needed for our father. Chris and Terry, the nurses whom I remember seeing a lot of, were really prompt with medications and always asked how my father was doing. Merna (?) and Rosa, the CNAs, were also prompt to assist. Lawrence and Assika (?), from the therapy team, helped him improve so much physically – from not being able to get up from bed to sitting down and standing up all by himself, and now he is able to walk with a walker with our assistance. Beata, the speech therapist, was very patience and knowledgeable about my father’s condition. He is home now, and we are continuing to help him improve further ourselves. Overall, my family and I really appreciate and thanks all the staffs at Kindred Lawton for all of their counted efforts – my father got the care he really needed from them while he was a resident here!!!

My mother was in this facility. She had a stroke in this facility, neither the Doctor nor the staff detected this fact. She entered the Lawton from St. Mary’s Hospital for physical therapy due to a fall. The physical therapy was unaware that her inability to walk was a direct result of a stroke she had while there. Her speech was slurred and she was confused, along with other stroke symptoms. I asked for the Doctor, whose name they told me was Doctor Eng (Sp?). He called me 24hours later, to tell me that she is fine, just not responding to treatment. I told him that I was going to call 911 and have her removed from the facility. He assured me that she was well, but that he will go check her out. He immediately called me back to tell me she is being transferred back to St. Mary’s because they don’t have the proper equipment to adequately treat her condition.
I do realize that it is a matter of economics when faced with coming to a place like this, and the general care and condition of this place is deplorable. The specific care in regard to a handful of medical professionals is something different, they do try, yet it is the Lawton hierarchy that has allowed piss-​poor care to be as it is.
As you walk up the ramp, you should notice the window curtains, one sign that they have not been cleaned or tended to for years. Horrid place!

this facility is a cash cow facility, i agree with another Unilocaler. my mother was there for rehab after a major fall. we were told that she would be getting rehab 3 times per week-​that was all her insurance allowed. come to find that mom never went into their tiny rehab room. most of mom’s rehab was to sit in a wheelchair for hours. no one bother to come and bring her back into her room. after awhile, she just sat inside her room in the wheelchair, their reason was, mom has a urine bag and that would be too much trouble for them to sit her in the nice lobby because if she made a mess, it was hard to clean and the workers would have a hard time moving her back into her room. wow! i guess the trouble of cleaning mom outweighs the level of care she needed to get better.
after 21 days, mom was moved to long term facility. when we requested more rehab, her insurance said they will not pay for more because mom was having rehab care at lawton. LIES LIES LIES!!! yes, they would come inside the room and move her limbs but that was about it. we were told in the beginning, they will get her into the rehab room but that never happened,
the workers all smile at you and act like they are so sympathetic but i wonder. when i asks questions, they answer in a very gruff manner. i am aware these places are short on staff but i come to find that everyday, the morning shift just sits in the back lunchroom by the time clock machine as early as 2:45 and just wait until their shift comes to an end at 3:15. they couldn’t do more until it was time to clock out.
the administrative team isn’t any better. they want to make sure the service is getting paid. they talk a good talk but i can see they are just making sure the money is generated.
be very weary of bring your loved one here.

Do NOT send your loved ones here if you value their health and recovery! This place doesn’t care about patients at all, other than as cash cows through which insurance reimbursement can be milked.
A family member was transferred here from St. Mary’s Hospital without her or our consent (that’s a whole other story), even though based on Unilocal reviews and horror stories from family friends, we never would have agreed to have her stay here. All the negative comments you see on this site about this facility are true. It would routinely take half an hour for the CNAs to respond to a call button, which is a very long time when a patient is in pain. Then, even though my relative had just had hip surgery and couldn’t walk, the CNAs would try to make her walk to the restroom before we screamed and stopped them. This happened repeatedly, because there was nothing posted in her room that alerted them that she couldn’t walk. The CNAs, for the most part, work as hard and fast as they can, but the place is so severely understaffed and poorly organized that they can’t keep up.
We spent 2 and a half days trying to get our relative transferred to a better facility, but Lawton stonewalled us, first by saying they can’t do so without a doctor’s permission, and they have no doctor on site, and no doctor could be reached by telephone. Really? And this is a medical facility but there’s never any doctor?
They agreed to transfer our relative only when we refused to leave the premises, and threatened to sue them unless they complied. They were then suddenly able to reach a supposedly «unreachable» doctor. But by the end of that 3^rd day, our relative had 2 enormous, untreated, unbandaged bedsores. And even though she was admitted for physical therapy for a hip fracture, she had received NO therapy. Zip.
Avoid this horrible place at all costs. Our relative received 1000% better care at Pacific Rehabilitation and Nursing, where we transferred her to.

I would say all in all that this place is just ok, but there is some definite room for improvement. My grandmother was here for about 3 weeks rehabbing from hip surgery.
Most of the staff here do seem to care, but there is that small percentage who, alarmingly, act as if they could give a crap. Example: On one occasion, my grandmother was feeling quite nauseous and at a low point during her stay. I tried to reach out to supposed «head nurse» (what a joke) and she basically just dismissed what I had to say. Basically just told me to encourage my grandmother to stay hydrated. Well, easier said than done since she couldn’t hold anything down at that period. Really? This person may want to quit her day job and work somewhere else, because her lack of empathy was quite alarming.
Also had a less than stellar experience with the doctor as well. He basically discontinued a medication my grandmother was taking for quite some time and neglected to advise my family. The medicine should have been tapered off instead of removing cold turkey. Had he bothered to check with us, he would have been told that she always has an adverse reaction anytime she has been cut-​off this medication. Thus, this led to her feeling extremely sick and nauseous. Of course, nobody knew what was causing her to feel this way, so a number of tests were done and ALL were negative. Duh. Yep, pretty scary.
I do applaud most of the hard-​working CNA’s here, as they really do a good job and do care. Along with most of the nurses and the physical and occupational therapy staff were great.
Lawton is actually supposed to be one of the better facilities out there as there are supposedly many others which are much, much, worse. That being said, is pretty scary.

Lawton Healthcare Center doesn’t get a bad review because of bad service, but for bad business practices. My family member stayed here for a couple months with a leg brace. They said she couldn’t shower because the brace had to be on all the time, therefore she could not get her hair washed.
Everyone knows how gross it feels to not wash your hair for long periods of time. Imagine week two and no one gives any option as to how to clean your hair. They have a beautician come in every Saturday. However, they fail to tell everyone about this service or tell people there is a special sign-​in sheet for it. On top of not telling patients about the service, they don’t tell you that it costs money (outside of the normal fees).
So imagine how I felt when my family member got hit with a bill a month after being discharged from Lawton. A place like this should be very transparent with the fees they are charging patients. Next time I am doing in-​home care.

My mom stayed at this place several times. I would agree with the other review that it seemed somewhat understaffed. The care that my mom received however was good. The physical therapy was good and the CNAs that worked with my mom were kind and patient. The facility is very clean. All and all if you need this kind of facility I think it is pretty good.

It seems like i am one the only people that write reviews on hospitals and health care related facility’s. Oh well! about a little less than a month ago my grandmother was admitted here after going to the ER because she was having trouble walking and she needed to go through Physical therapy. Turns out she had Gout and Arthritis which was caused by her high blood pressure meds. We have come several times to visit her here and spend time with her. I was sad that she didn’t get to come home for Christmas :(. However the good news is she will be release by the end of next wk. YAY!
This facility has many people that have minor conditions or need physical therapy for a short amount of time. They really try to help the patients interact by scheduling dinner and lunch at the same times. Having movie showings, games and other sorts of things to bring everyone together so it doesn’t feel like a prison. I am happy that they have taken good care of my grandmother and here physical therapy has gone well. We noticed she is walking alot better :)

I did my clinicals here for my CNA class a few years ago. I saw one of the CNAs pulling the eyebrows of a patient here to annoy her, she told him to stop and he wouldnt. HORRIBLE. (his name was arnold)
The CNAs are instructed not to speak anything but English but dang all I heard was Tagalog. This place is understaffed. Some of the CNAs are super nice but they are overworked and totally burnt out. One of them is 70+ years old! The patients here were so nice though, i hope they are okay. There are only 2 nurses at a time here. All they do is give meds and do some wound care. they dont really have any time to do anything else.
all i can say is understaffed.
