JW Marriott San Francisco Union Square

I park here fairly often when I work in Union Square and I LOVE this place. I found this parking spot on ParkWhiz (you need this app too btw, download it) when everyone wanted to rack their prices up for Super Bowl and have their parking be $ 50-​$ 70 A DAY. I park here all day for $ 12 and its valet. If you don’t book through the app then parking will be more. I also like the fact that you can text the number on your ticket and they will have your car ready for you by the time you get there (otherwise it’s usually a 5 – 7 minute wait). I also want to add in that the guys who work the valet are awesome! They’re all so friendly and very quick to get you in and out, I like that. Will continue to park here even when Super Bowl is over.

Terrible service and they gouge visitors. We came to have a drink in the bar at 5 pm on Jan 11 (a Monday) with 5 business associates and they wanted to charge us $ 80 for the «rental» of the table in the bar. It wasn’t even in the bar (it was a converted part of the lobby) because it was during the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference, which we aren’t even attending. Our business associates didn’t have a lot of time so we stayed. Service was TERRIBLE and the Chianti had gone bad and I had to send it back. On top of it, they were only half full (now we know why!) I am a local San Franciscan and do not like supporting businesses that take advantage of customers and treat them poorly. Don’t go here!

This was NOTHING like the other JW Marriott I have stayed in. The Rooms are much Smaller. The Shower was very tiny and don’t allow you to move around. Parking for your vehicle is $ 61 but across the street you can find it half that price.

The location is great, check in process was pleasant and was even greeted with a cup of warm apple cider. Our room was immaculately clean & spacious with a very comfortable bed. The only drawback was that I could hear the construction and street commotion from our room. I could even hear housekeepers talking very loudly in the hallway in the morning so I wish the walls were a bit thicker. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and will likely return; will just ask for another room if it gets too noisy.

Just spent Christmas Day at the JW Marriott. It’s a beautiful hotel with great service. The room was clean, modern and comfortable. The bathroom was big and spa like. Nice stocked amenities in the bathroom and comfortable terry robes. The bar downstairs was nice and well stocked. The only complaint is wifi was an extra charge. Parking is expensive but we were able to leave our car to go shopping the next day at no additional charge. Other than that we had a great time. We were able to walk to shops at Union Square the next day. I would definitely stay again!

We spent the week here at the JW Marriott over the Christmas Holiday. Had a great time and even built ginger bread houses in the club Kevin with the fam. We had brunch coupons that we used almost every day. Rooms are nice and cozy and the Windows actually open up to the fresh outdoors! Conveniently located a few blocks from Union Square, shopping, food and sights this is a great place to stay.

Quiet hotel in the middle of a busy and noisy area of San Francisco. Easy walking distance to everything you want to see in Union Square. Also easy walking distance to several good restaurants and bars.
I knocked a star off because the concierge lounge doesn’t serve any kind of breakfast meat on the weekends, only during the week. I’ve never seen another Marriott property do the same thing. I’ve seen a few that aren’t open at all on the weekends, but never one that limited the breakfast menu on weekends. Strange.
The concierge was very helpful on several occasions and the doormen were always friendly. The price was surprisingly low for a JW property for a weekend stay.

Back some years ago this was just a regular Marriott.
So how do you transform a regular Marriott into a swanky upscale hip JW Marriott?
1. Change the name in the front.
2. Remove the ice machines on the floors so you have to call room service to have it delivered
3. Charge $ 69 bucks for overnight parking!!!
I stayed here a couple of years ago and I can’t really tell if the rooms have changed. Same paint colors, not huge rooms at all. Maybe the bathrooms got spiffed up some…
With that being said. No problems with the experience. What you would expect at a Marriott.
If your company is paying for it — no problem.
If you are paying for it (which we were this weekend) So many better and somewhat less expensive choices (The St Francis one block over only charges 30 bucks for overnight parking) for example.

Wow! Could not have asked for a better hotel! Recently stayed here on a trip to San Fransisco and it was an easy 5 stars. First off, the hotel is lovely. The lobby is gorgeous, my room was clean and looked recently redone and the 21^st floor views are hard to beat! Every staff member I encountered during my stay was friendly and eager to help. Really could not have asked for a better experience all around.

This is about the concierge breakfast…
The breakfast here was buffet style. There was a large selection of foods to choose from. The eggs were very tasty. There was shredded cheese and salsa on the side to accommodate the eggs. That was all I had, I’m sorry to say.
Will I go back? Yes.

The JW in SF is a great property with tons of amenities and a fantastic location amidst the hustle of downtown San Francisco. This place pretty much treats you like royalty especially as a platinum Marriott guest. I have stayed here on multiple occasions and have been impressed with the service, room size, views and overall ambiance. This JW chain of Marriotts tend to be pretty consistent as to meet or exceed your expectations no matter where your staying and this particular location is no different. Overall, not a bad spot to stay if visiting SF for leisure and/​or business.

My husband and I always say that regardless of the Marriott brand level, the niceness of a hotel really depends on its age. This hotel appeared to be a little older and was a bit dated. The ceilings in the rooms were low and the bathroom had purplish/​red tile. The bathroom did have a separate tub and shower which was useful because the shower head had such poor water pressure that I had to wash my hair using the bathtub hand held shower head! The room was clean though.
The lobby of this hotel was nice and the hotel has a good concierge lounge with breakfast 7 days per week. We appreciated the breakfast availability as most Marriotts only have breakfast on weekdays in the concierge lounge. Hors d’oeuvres are only available on weekdays which is pretty standard at Marriotts.
The concierge left much to be desired. I would’ve expected at least 2 people at the concierge desk but there was only one person who was frequently not manning the desk. This resulted in a front desk employee giving us our tour tickets and giving us bad information which sent us on a wild goose chase for our Alcatraz tickets. Additionally we were told our tour tickets would be there when we checked in and they were not there until the following day which made them useless as we relied on receiving and using them on our first day.
We are loyal to the Marriott brand and typically have good experiences but the experience with this hotels concierge left much to be desired.

I sat in the lobby with a friend here and sipped on hot tea. It’s a little outdated. Could use a facelift.

I’ve stayed here twice now… and both visits were lovely. You can’t beat the location and the hotel is clean. I’ve stayed here with points both times and they still upgraded me as a Gold member, which I appreciate, since other hotels treat you a bit shabbily when you’re not «paying» (but I paid in the long run, oh believe me, I’ve paid for that «free» stay, Marriott).
The valet is astronomical (around $ 60), so don’t bring your car! But the bathroom is ginormous, which is unheard of in San Francisco. Actually, I was leaning towards three stars (well more like 3.5), but now that I’m talking about how spacious the rooms are (and I’ve stayed in A LOT of San Francisco hotel rooms), I’m going to bump this review up to 4 stars. Especially because everyone who works there is positively lovely — attentive and friendly.
Sure, this isn’t the fanciest place in the world, but it’s certainly not common, and therefore deserves four stars.

Everything done well. From the bellman at the door, the staff at the desk, food and drink at the restaurant, concierge lounge, everything.
Rooms are clean and spacious (and well-​appointed). There were a couple of very minor maintenance issues, but not worth detailing.
Restaurant felt like it might be a little stuffy (and pricey!) But we went down for happy hour and had several delicious tapas dishes and a couple of good drinks and didn’t have to go to the bank for a loan afterwards.
In a great location, close enough to Union Square to be convenient, yet far enough to be out of the well trammeled tourist/​shopping areas. Can walk to several of the theatres and nice restaurants.

With a long weekend in San Francisco, I selected JW Marriott as my base. While the outside is a blah 1970−80s architecture, the inside is very nice. Being on a SF hill, the entrance is odd via the valet lobby (which is a mishmash art gallery?) and up an elevator to the main lobby. Most of the time there was an elevator attendant to help me push the button.
Check in was a breeze and they upgraded me to a corner suite with a long work top and nice sitting areas. The marble bath had separate shower & tub. My king bed was super comfortable. There was even a butler bell to ring for service (which we used to order ice). While friends stayed at other hotels, needless to say my room became the party and champagne spot!
The Concierge Lounge on the top floor had views to die for… if the fog lifted. The complimentary breakfast was typical Marriott and not quite the level of other international JWs.
Service was superb from the front desk to the bellmen who let me store my luggage all day and evening after checkout. I’d stay here again.
Marriott Rewards is a great hotel program. Besides points, my weekend stay set me back 40 cents.

So checked in here today and we had booked our room through
… Got to the front desk and as we were checking in we asked if there are any possible upgrades we can get. We were told they can’t do anything complementary but with an extra 35 dollars a day we can get a view of the Golden Gate bridge. We were of course thrilled so we decided to do that. We get to our room and guess what, no golden gate its just a city view. We called downstairs to ask them if we were placed in the wrong room and the gentleman over the phone tells us that that’s as good as it gets and the bridge isnt visible. Now i dont mind paying extra for luxury however being lied to is neither professional nor welcoming.
We have been staying at the W for years and decided to stay here for a change and now I regret that since we were point blank lied to. Will never be back again.

A quirky JW that cannot seem to decide if it is an art gallery or a hotel. The property is beautiful, the valet, front desk and cleaning staff are fantastic.
Almost every inch of public space displays art that is for sale, giving the entrance a cluttered feel. Without knowing the story behind the art emphasis, it all seems a bit out of place.
The concierge setup is not ideal. No bottled water, no cream for coffee after hours. There is quite a bit of street noise in the rooms, even if you are on a high floor.
The lack of bottled water in the concierge lounge makes no sense. They claim it is to reduce carbon foot print, but the sturdy disposable plastic cups available to drink the concierge room filtered water they provide contains more plastic than the bottles they replace and you cannot easily carry more than one to your room. So if you get thirsty at night the only bottled water option is the expensive bottle of artisan water they provide in the room for a fee that was shipped out from New Zealand (the other side of the planet I might add), at a much larger carbon cost than the bottle of local water I wish they had provided in the first place.

Apparently this JW Marriott was opened in 1986 and after several stays during the past two years I would still not hesitate to recommend this fine hotel.
First off, I would not use their valet service if it’s your own dime, try the lot literally across the street for half the price (with ins and outs), and for locals and tourists alike, I recommend you request a room as high up as possible (for the view and to also negate some of that not always beautiful city noise). Before my last stay, I installed the Marriott app to check in and the whole process went smoothly. Take note, when you walk in from the street, take the elevator and go to the 3^rd floor to reach the lobby.
One of the main selling points is the close proximity to Union Square. You can hoof it to the Embarcadero or catch an Über ride for $ 7. The illy Espresso Pod machine is a nice in room touch and the staff has always been courteous and professional.

Really great as far as SF hotels go.
VALET: Quick, speedy and you can text them so your car will be waiting for you when you pull up. Also in/​out privileges are included. It’s pricey at about $ 50 a day, but that seems to be the norm in SF.
CONCIERGE LOUNGE: now this was a ridiculous amount of fun for me. I’d wake up early and finish my workouts just so I could come in and take a stab at the free breakfast buffet. We’d also come in for desserts nightly and take food to go and eat up there– it’s just a great little spot to unwind and not be bothered.
GYM: BEST gym i’ve ever seen at a hotel outside of the St. Regis next door. Free weights up to 80+ pounds and tons of clean equipment so you can sneak a comprehensive workout in.
ROOM ITSELF: Comfy bed, AEREON CHAIRS (wtf???), but the room itself is a bit dark/​small. The bath was great and I got a kick out of the mirror in the shower– motivated me to work out a bit more during my stay.
Loved that they served illy coffee for free in the lobby as well before 10AM. Great staff, great service and had a great time! Highly recommended if you’re staying in the area.
