Helene Rene Hair and Make-​up is a hair salon within a salon specializing in having a relaxing, rejuvenating experience for every client.

Offering hair services for all hair types, hair cutting, Keratin, Brazilian Blow Out, Express and Split-​end Treatments, hair styling and up-​dos, hair coloring, including corrective coloring, permanent waving, make-​up and wedding parties

Each visit begins with a consultation which leads to an agreement between the client and myself. I provide you with the education necessary to know how to style your hair at home and what products will be the best for you.

Would you like to add a little mini Spa experience with your visit? I use my signture skin care and make-​up line to add a little color to your face or relax with a masque on your face. Of course you can buy these products to take home too.

During your visit in the salon you will enjoy refresments, use wi-​fi if you wish and have peace.

I can also travel to your location for hair, make-​up, special events or to teach a class for one or perhaps you will have a makeover party.

History

Established in 1986.

I owned a sucessful salon on the 1900 block of Union St.

Recenty, the building was sold and I had to leave. Union Street has been my home, as a resident, business owner, and serving on the board of the Union Street Association. It has been a great location for my clients. I am pleased to have found another location within Ringolevio Salon and Spa just two blocks away. I am an independent salon owner. I am as unique as my space is.

Helene Rene’s career as a hair designer and make-​up artist has been taking care of people so that they will feel they look their best.

Education is continuous as there maybe another technique product or better tools to be used to make a clients hair and skin radiate. It is important to me to be innovative creative and on the edge. I have been fortunate to travel the globe to educate myself as well as an educator to teach other hairdressers and make-​up artist. I have been on TV, radio, wrote a book «Never Have Another Ugly Day.» I have taught blind women how to do their make-​up. I donate my hands to worthy causes.

I had a groupon for a haircut and partial highlights with a complementary glass of wine. There was no glass of wine. That aside, I was not very impressed with the highlights. This was only my second time getting my hair highlighted so I was not that comfortable with the process yet. I felt very rushed since she said she had an appointment after mine and she only had an hour to work with me, which I did not know upon booking the appointment. I had to help her section my hair to select the right parts to color. She also asked me why I didn’t stick with the same colorist who originally did my hair, which I found to be a strange question. It sort of implied she didn’t want my business. The answer is that I had a groupon for her services instead…
There was basically no discussion of the color of the highlights and I think we both assumed we were on the same page. I wanted them to be the same color as before, which was growing out– a caramel color. The color came out much blonder than I wanted, and it looked unnatural against the rest of my dark brown hair. By that time we were out of time though, so she said I could come back another day to have the color fixed.
I was glad she offered to do that, but I ultimately did not take her up on the offer because I didn’t want to go through the whole hassle of booking an appointment, fitting it into my schedule, parking in that area, and being rushed through the coloring process again, especially because I was not confident that we would get it right a second time and I didn’t want to further damage my hair. I’m planning to dye my hair all back to its natural color.

Helene is a rare gem of a soul and stylist!
Keratin smoothing treatments done by her could not be done any better or with more personal a touch.
I was going to Rome for a month and realized my curly hair was needing a new treatment before those hot Italian men laid eyes on me.
I called asking for an appt but she was fully booked till nov!
I asked to be on a wait list if anyone canceled.
The hair gods shined on me– 3 days later she got me in.
My usual stylist is in LA — so I turned to Unilocal for help.
Thanks to so many of Helenes customers for all your reviews.
Thank you Helene– it was a relaxing and lovely experience to spend my Saturday in your arms, chair and presence.

I just had a keratin treatment done with Helene and I couldn’t be happier. She was super informative and on time. She also gave me a lot of beauty tips :-) My hair looks great and I definitely will be going back to her in three months.

My review is nearly identical to valentina x.‘s below. Helene is a very warm person and I so enjoy chatting with her during my appointments.
That said, I just went to Helene for a Keratin treatment at Groupon price. She’s done one on me before. The first time it worked fine, faded a little earlier than other treatments I’ve gotten (about 5 – 6), but it stuck for the first month. (Note I have thick but very fine shoulder length hair.)
This time, I washed my hair for the first time after ~ 72 hours and it was much wavier than I’ve ever seen before. I contacted Helene and she said we both «did our best» and this treatment «isn’t guaranteed» and that there was nothing she could do to about it. She offered to do it again at the Groupon price, but I’d rather not pay another high dollar amount for a treatment that isn’t guaranteed. I’m not sure what went wrong, perhaps I needed more Keratin product in my hair as valentina mentioned below.
I really enjoyed getting to know Helene and it’s hard to write this review, but I won’t be going back to her.

This review is for Keratin treatment.
First of all, Helene is a very kind and warm person and she makes her customers feel comfortable. So, 2 stars for that.
I purchased a groupon for Keratin. I’ve done Keratin treatment 4 times before this and this is the first time I’ve been disappointed by the results. Usually once I wash my hair for the first time, my hair doesn’t have as many waves. This particular treatment seems like it wasn’t really done that well.
I noticed that Helene wasn’t applying that much keratin product to my hair. And the flat iron part was also not done that meticulously as I’ve had done before. Usually stylists do way smaller sections of my hair to flat iron, but Helene did larger portions.
While I really enjoyed chatting with Helene, I don’t think I will go back for Keratin. I’m bummed out because this is not that cheap of a treatment :-/

I made an appointment and went in for a haircut and highlights. When doing the highlights, I noticed she used what appeared to be USED foils, crumpled and oddly shaped, rather than one size, smooth shaped pieces. She kept telling me how she was trained by Redkin colorists, so I tried not to worry.
When I got home, I examined my hair more closely and in better light. I saw spots of light and dark color in my hair. I had spotted hair! My conclusion was that this was a result of the foils that she used and that the uneven surface of the foils created an uneven application of bleach & toner. To make matters worse, the area that I asked to have colored with the lightest highlights was actually colored to the darkest shade in my hair. Furthermore, the color was not applied at the hairline but rather it was a half inch or so out from the hairline, so it gave the appearance that the color had grown out, rather than looking like newly highlighted hair.
When she cut my hair, she began cutting from the front. All other hair stylists who have ever cut my hair begin a haircut in the back, cutting at the back of the neck and going around section by section to the front. A day and a shampoo later, the problems with my haircut became apparent. Miscellaneous pieces were not even where they should have been even. I realized that she did not check the length of the cuts well or it would have been clear in the salon that the hair was not even.
During much of the time she was working on my hair, she was chatting with a friend which may have distracted her during my appointment.
When I called her to express my strong dissatisfaction with my highlights and cut, she could not talk to me. She said she would have to call me back. After waiting until 8pm for her to call me back, she said she was sorry but she was fully booked. She said that I would have to wait a full 3 weeks before she could help fix the mess she made of my hair!!!
Since I could not go that long with my hair looking so poorly, I have had to incur substantial additional expense in order to get my hair re-​cut and re-​colored by others who knew what they were doing.

I found Helene Rene online, I was searching for a salon that was familiar with people who’ve gone chemo treatment. I’m not a cancer patient myself but am on chemo medication to help with my lupus. I had lost a lot of hair and needed a hair cut badly. I was expecting to get my hair short, which I had come to terms with, but my hair looked amazing after my cut and style.
Helene Rene was wonderful, she’s so sweet easy to talk to and I really enjoyed my visit. I will return in the near future.

I just went to Helene Rene for a Keratin treatment and can tell you that she takes her time with each strand of hair (which I believe makes the treatment more effective), without rushing or scheduling other clients during the wait periods — that means her attention is on you, which I appreciate. She is easy to talk to, but also knows when to let you relax and enjoy your magazine. While her hours are flexible for those working regular business hours, book her well in advance as she has lots of regulars pre-​booked.

Helene is WONDERFUL! I purchased a Groupon for a Keratin treatment and was so pleased with her patience through the whole process. For those who have never had it done, it can take 2 – 3 hours and it is very labor intensive. She is so friendly and knowledgeable about what’s good for hair and skin. I started using her suggestions and my hair feels healthier than it has in a long time. The Keratin treatment should be done every 3 – 4 months and I plan on continuing to go to Helene every time I need it done.

I can’t say my review is about Helene Rene Hair & Make-​up services. I am sure, from reading other reviews, that they do a lovely job. I however purchased a groupon and when I tried calling at 9am (when they open), nobody answered the phone. I tried calling three times, no answer. Her voicemail stated to leave a message or text, so I texted, stating I had purchased a groupon and would like to schedule an appointment. No response to my text. So I called again, after patiently waiting, at 1130 am. Upon this time, somebody answered the phone, and I explained my situation. I was told there were no open appointments. Ok, fine. But I did just spend $ 100 on a groupon, what now? I am sorry, that will expire, but I have some openings two days from now. I then asked if the groupon deal would continue to be valid, I was kindly told, no it was not. WHAT?! Not only that, but I could barely hear her as her dog was barking the entire time.
Btw, I finally got a return call from my text at about 4:30pm, I missed the call, but my voicemail stated that I could schedule an appointment the next day… ok, that is not what you told me earlier? I was so frustrated at that point, that I did not bother returning the call.
She may be the most wonderful hairstylist in the world, but her customer service skills suck. Please, do not place groupon deals and advertise your business on groupon if you don’t intend on valuing the customers purchase. I will get a refund from groupon, so no problem there. Good thing I have money in the bank, because it was still debited from my account.

I had a Coppola Keratin treatment and this was the best by far (I’ve had a couple before). Helene was so gentle and thorough. My hair looks absolutely wonderful. She was punctual and so pleasant. I had a great time. I would strongly recommend her for this type of treatment. She is the best!

She is such a lovely lady! She gave me some great tips on caring for my hair, which is borderline fine in some spots and has become difficult to style based on that fact alone. I enjoyed my time with her, learning about her life and chatting during the haircut and highlights. She definitely does a great job listening to the client while providing her professional experience, I respected that tremendously! I was happy with the work she did.

I got the Coppola Keratin treatment from Helene today and I love it! I have been thinking about it for quite some time, but when I saw Helene’s hair after the treatment and after she explained how it worked, I was convinced to try it. Helene is very knowledgeable about all her hair and makeup services and products. She keeps you informed as she goes through the processes. She told me about pH balance in shampoos and how indoor heat may be the reason my hair has been so dry recently. She has product suggestions for everything I asked her about.
The treatment took about three hours and I felt comfortable in her salon. She has a cute private room where she makes sure I always knew what was going on! She makes sure her clients are happy and offers to help out if we need anything after we leave her salon!
Helene also offers her own makeup and beauty line and makeup lessons! I highly recommend her for anyone wanting to learn, as she is a great teacher. You can tell by the passion she has for what she loves to do — making us all happy from our necks up!

I’m happy to say I met the owner of this salon several years ago when he taught once a week at my former cosmetology school and was very loved by all.
Helene does great blondes and highlights and always uses all the best products.
She down to earth and a very special person.
