Gregory Zabek, DDS

I grew up having my grandfather as my dentist and now that he is retired I found Dr. Zabek through friends.
Dr. Zabek is very helpful. I had my first appointment last year and he went through a detailed first exam. Afterward, we reviewed my insurance and he explained to me what benefits I had and what I should use to help my teeth. Since then, i have filled 2 cavities and one old filling that chipped off. He talked me into teeth cleaning every three months and it makes a huge difference. Happy to have found a Dentist i am comfortable going. Highly recommend.

How often in your life do you look forward to going to «The Dentists?» I have to tell you that his visits always leave me feeling super-​wonderful and extra-​clean. The gentle water-​pik-​type cleaner thing he has is so so so gentle. Lenora and Sheryl are awesome, too, and the whole office setting is a very relaxing experience (translation: tinglies on the back of your neck). The one-​star reviews below are really quite funny — and wholly inaccurate, which is unfortunate. He has digital (instant) x-​rays. He is accommodating and helpful and available and knowledgeable. Highly recommended!

Dr. Zabek is a very knowledgeable dentist with a great sense of humor. His cleanings are incredibly thorough and cavity fillings are painless. His office staff are super friendly too. Love them!

I was a patient for a couple of years. I believe he overcharged me and did several unnecessary procedures. He told me I needed extra cleanings, and every time I went in I had a couple cavities or cavities that needed to be re-​done. I have been going to a different dentist for a year and a half now and she confirmed my suspicions that I don’t need extra cleanings, and somehow I’ve gone this entire time without cavities. In addition, he was always trying to upsell special gels or treatments. He also kept asking me to write a Unilocal review.
In addition, Dr. Zabek made several sexually inappropriate remarks to me, at least one or two per visit. If you are a dude, this probably won’t bother you, but as a woman it’s really annoying. I think he means well, but he’s basically a good old boy living in the 1950s. He thinks it’s appropriate to talk about women’s mini skirts and gag reflexes. Seriously, how uncomfortable is it when your dentist comments on another patient’s gag reflex?
His employees are really quite nice, but I always got a weird vibe from them like they knew he was a little off, but what could they do? The office is quite dated and all of the equipment is pretty old (no digital x-​rays). Anyway, he’s not going to injure you or anything, but there are tons of other dentists out there.

I love this dentist! From his friendly staff to his chair side manner, Dr. Zabek is hands down the best dentist I’ve ever had.
I lost my tooth and went to Dr. Zabek after another dentist wanted to charge me $ 5,600 for a bridge. Dr. Zabek discussed my options, and got me a tooth the very next day.
We also discussed more permanent procedures, and I will most certainly use him for that.
I highly recommend Dr. Zabek and his friendly staff. You will not be disappointed!

Dr. Zabek’s office team is very professional and I’m happy with the work I’ve had done. A crown, cleaning and a cavity filled. The filling on a back molar caused me some inflammation for a couple weeks after but Dr. Zabek was very patient and helped me through it. I think this last time I saw him for adjustment of the bite did the trick. I’m sure I’ll be back when I need to. very satisfied customer

Dr. Zabek is a hero. I had pain in a tooth and couldn’t eat on one side for over six months. And he fixed it in 20 minutes.
On top of that, he’s a great guy and his team are all bright and happy. Couldn’t be happier! Highly recommended.

Dr. Zabek is a fantastic dentist. I’ve been a gay patient for over 12 years and was shocked to read the negative review posted implying Dr Z. is anti-​gay. Those of us who know Dr. Zabek well would all agree he is anything but prejudice. I actually love the fact that the office has fun and they have always made me feel right at home.

I went to Dr. Zabek («Dr. Z») yesterday for the first time. My visit was the most thorough, well-​explained and helpful I’ve had to a dentist in over 10 years. Dr. Z and his staff are funny, helpful, and take the time to explain what they are doing. Dr. Z takes care to study the whole maxillofacial area, not just the teeth.
Unlike any other experience I’ve had, Dr. Z kept up a non-​stop explanation of what he was looking for and why he was doing what he was doing. He took all the time needed to do the most thorough dental exam and cleaning I’ve ever had. I’m now a big fan!
As regards gay-​bashing (in Rex G’s review), I found no such problem. I and the other patients were treated with the utmost respect.

I stopped going to Dr. Z after overhearing him make anti-​gay remarks when I was waiting in an adjacent room for a cleaning. He and another male were discussing prop 8 and he let his feelings be known, albeit, a little too loud. dumb, dumb, dumb… You just cost yourself a loyal patient.
As for a dentist, he was good, I never had any problems with any of the work he did on my teeth. My only complaint in regards to his work was that he’s a spitter when he talks, and he liked to talk while performing dental procedures, and would occasionally spit on you when your mouth’s agape. The last thing I want is my dentist spitting on me, especially when my mouth is wide f**king open. That use to annoy the hell out of me. I would be lying in the chair thinking… «would you please STFU». Based on this alone, I was planning on finding a new dentist, but his anti-​gay comments made me expedite the process.

I went to another dentist before and was diagnosed with a possible root canal therapy. When I saw the quote from my previous dentist I was like: «HUWHAT!!!»
Then I found out that the dentist that I went was not «in-​network» with my company’s dental insurance company, I immediately went online to find an in-​network dentist.
As you might’ve guessed, a ton of names came out and I basically Unilocaled them one by one. I was flummoxed to see that Dr. Zabek actually has a full five star rating on Unilocal.I was slightly skeptical, but then I went in anyway (cause he’s in network.)
After I went and meet the team, I was impressed! They really do deserve a full five star rating on Unilocal.Everyone was so nice!
Dr. Z told me a funny story about his last name. The whole team were there to make me feel safe and welcomed. Dentist offices can be daunting, but everyone here made you feel like you’re part of the family & friends circle.
You can really tell Dr. Z has had years and years of experience – which is always a good thing!
Lastly, I just have to dedicate this one paragraph to Dr. Z’s assistant: Cheryl Green. Cheryl was just awesome. She’s very helpful, nice and funny (and basically a lot more positive adjectives, but I don’t want to bore you guys).
I’d hope my teeth get better after the filling that Dr. Z did, but I wouldn’t mind meeting them again! :)

I grew up going to one of the best dentists in the Portland area (Dr. Alan Montrose — Smiles Northwest), and was never able to find a dentist in any other city that compared until I came to Dr. Zabek. He is awesome. Very thorough, very knowledgeable and he even went to the best dental school in the nation (per my UofP dental student girlfriend).
His staff is also amazing. Plus I’ve never been able to get a dental appointment within the week of calling or had my teeth cleaned by the actual dentist before. Amazing. I highly recommend him.
Only negative thing is that once my girlfriend graduates from dental school in two years, I’ll most likely have/​be forced to go to her. But I might sneak back to Dr. Zabek once in awhile…

Dr. Zabek puts my old dentist to shame.
Just like Ken U, I mainly chose Dr. Zabek because of my insurance and his location, which is only a couple blocks away from Union Square. His website also mentioned his background in treating TMJ, which was a plus. My old dentist in Southern California had only one star reviews, and I was pleased to see so many five star reviews for Dr. Zabek.
Because I was a new patient, Dr. Zabek took plenty of time to examine me before cleaning my teeth. It was the most thorough dental exam I’ve ever experienced. He had me move around my jaw, evaluate my bite, measured how far I could open my mouth, and even examined my neck, cheeks and eyes before he even got to my teeth. My old dentist would have a dental assistant do the cleaning, but Dr. Zabek did this himself, and spent the entire time telling me an entertaining but educational story about dental hygiene. After cleaning my teeth and giving me a fluoride treatment, he had me show him how I brush and floss my teeth. Apparently I’ve been doing this incorrectly my entire life. If my old dentist taught me what Dr. Zabek taught me in just a few minutes, I probably would have saved thousands of dollars on fixing my teeth and gums. The entire experience was life-​changing, and I’m not exaggerating. I learned so much in just a short amount of time and I can’t believe I went over twenty years before visiting a REAL dentist.
The icing on the cake was his cheerful staff who made booking the appointment and handling my insurance as easy as can be.

Not only is Dr. Zabek a great dentist, not only are his assistant and receptionist cheerful and professional, not only are they loads of laughs, I must say that they sort of renew my faith in the human race. How’s that for a teeth-​cleaning.
First of all, maybe it’s just my tough Midwestern standards, but I’m continually disappointed by San Francisco service/​professional/​medical businesses. I’ve had terrible experiences with chiropractors, accountants, hair salons, etc., who have a terrible work ethic and try to take you for all the money you have. That’s why it’s so awesome to find a pro like Dr. Zabek.
I first went to him a few years ago as I was leaving a job and wanted to squeeze the most out of my dental insurance before it went «poof.» I’m a terrible person and ignore my teeth and so there was a lot to do, all sorts of cavities and receding gums and yada yada. I’m not going to lie and say it was a walk in the park, I mean, I’m a wuss with pain, but Dr. Zabek was considerate, thorough, and clear in his explanations.
More recently I noticed a tooth that had always been slightly discolored had suddenly turned, like, brownish. Ew, I know. Why didn’t any of my friends mention this to me, was my first thought. I was scheduled to make a professional appearance in front of people in just a few days, and I didn’t want to do it looking like a rotten-​toothed hillbilly, so I called Dr. Zabek to see if they could squeeze me in, not knowing what the issue might be and expecting to pay through the nose (now that I’m «sans» insurance). They saw me right away, and it turned out all I needed was just quick cleaning, which he did in like 8 minutes and then charged me a ridiculously low amount of money. Of course he did make me promise to come in for a more thorough cleaning and checkup. Sigh. Fine. So I came back and he filled in a few cavities nearly painlessly.
The other thing is, I would like to propose to a major TV network that they just film an afternoon in this office and add it to their fall lineup because Dr. Z, his assistant Cheryl, and receptionist Leonor are all hilarious. It’s almost like… I look forward… to going to the dentist. (Faints)

Another 5 stars for Dr. Zabek.
I chose Dr. Zabek due to my insurance, location (short walk from Powell BART station area where I work), and excellent Unilocal reviews. I agree with the other Unilocalers on this one, as indicated by the 5 stars in this review.
The other members were right on about Dr. Zabek’s thoroughness, humor, and friendliness. In particular, I appreciated that he took MORE time to answer questions, made sure I was flossing effectively, etc, despite the fact that I was the last patient of the day (instead of the other way around).

Dr. Zabek has been taking care of my for over 12 years. I learn so much from him as he is very patient centric and ensures that you are informed about all aspects of your care. I recommend Dr. Z highly. I love it when people ask me who my dentist is because they compliment me on my teeth and smile.

Dr. Zabek is an excellent dentist and I have no complaints. He is very thorough and takes time to explain things. He is definitely out for the patient’s best interests. His office staff is very friendly, as well. If you want a fantastic dentist, go here!
