Funkanometry SF

Ok, I took some time update since the completion of PW11 but here I am again!
It was such an awesome experience. If you are someone who like to challenge yourself and have admiration to perform on the stage, I highly and strongly encourage you to sign up for another PW with EM. For PW11 was directed by Emerson and Maricar, aka Kay. Level of dance was truly intermediate. For those who are beginners, you can challenge yourself to next level and for those who do pick up routine well but not strong enough to make into the professional team, go for it and learn how to execute yourself as a performer. You will be able to experience what its like to stage, block and act through out the workshop. Not to mention you’ll meet so many fantastic friends. I still keep in touch with many friends from PW11 and some I still dance with. Because Emerson has such great sense of directing and staging, he will make everyone look good and stage the way everyone can be standing out on the stage.
I am currently skipping out on PW12 because I’m exploring other style of dancing but I am definitely going to sign up again for PW13. I have a full-​time job and cannot make it to teams because it’s a big commitment to be on the team as well as I’m not that stronger of a dancer yet XP, with that in mind, PW is the best opportunity for me to reveal my dancer spirit and enjoy being on stage.
Anybody interested but not sure? JUST DO IT. You will not regret!

it has been a while since I’ve take a class with Funks, but it is still definitely the best I’ve had, as far as hip hop. They hold their classes at City dance. A wonderful facility! it is well kept, clean, and kind of tucked away, so be ready for that!
I am by no means a dancer… NOT AT ALL… I have a hard time picking up choreography, but when I take the beginners hip hop class with Emerson, I don’t feel intimidated. The environment is safe and encouraging. I still get really shy, but that is my own fault. Emerson’s beginners class is great because he does break it down, and goes step by step. Many instructors don’t do across the floors, and Em does. It is not just about the movement either. there is an emphasis on attitude and confidence. Every style is different, so the attitude changes with it. I most definitely recommend this to the ones wanting to learn and are willing to put in the work.
The De La Femme class is a more Intermediate session, or even advanced. I can do this class once in a while… but i like it because it is never the same thing twice! they have difference choreographers every week, and different styles coming in. It is great for those who have little dance experience, and even for those who have been dancing for a long time. The class is challenging, but also well taught!
The Funks company class is the scary class for me. It is always packed! they bring in great choreographers to teach this class, whether from their own company or from somewhere else! This class is intimidating unless you know what you are doing. They move through the choreography quickly, but makes sure u get time to ask questions as well. This, to me, is the super advanced class, and it is a whole lot of fun!!! FUN FUN FUN!!!
They do all kinds of performance workshops as well, so if that is your aim…
Lastly, there is the Funksters program. It is their 18 and under dance performance program for youngins. It is an audition based group, and many try out, but only a few make it through. My brother went through this program, under the direction of Krystle Pascua, and came out an even better dancer than he did coming in. They practiced twice a week for a good 2 – 4 hours a day. This program gets the kids out, performing in the community, and exposing them to a lifestyle that many only dream about. From what i see, it helps them grow in their movement, and in their own skin, teaching them confidence, respect for them selves and the arts, team work, and the value of hard work.
so what ever your background is, or what ever u are looking for (in predominantly hip hop dance), u will find it with Funks SF.

Amazing! =) I only know a handful of them… maybe less since I don’t dance as much, or not around it… but I like em!

FunkanometrySF’s 1^st Annual Sockhop

The concert, showcasing the diversity and talents of a dozen renowned and accomplished dance companies from near and far, was ASTOUNDING!
Though referred to mainly as a «hip-​hop» dance show, the artfulness of movement and emotive choreography of some pieces imbued this show with unforgettably powerful moments, transcending any categorization aside from captivating.
All the performances and performers were outstanding, but there are the few that stood out in my mind.
The performance by Team Millennia had a feel (and look) of being something you might find in a musical; the large ensemble cast was dressed in various everyday attire (jeans, tees, backpacks, caps) instead of a fabricated stage look/​outfit, giving the routine (and its asymmetric formations and movements) a great look.
Kaba Modern, with an army of a cast, performed a piece that is perhaps the most explorative of genre, tempo, style as a single piece could be. As always, Kaba is ever engaging and entertaining!
DS Players, representing Mission College, brought a fun routine, homage to classic and timeless hip-​hop and funk styles. And perhaps, DS cast were the slickest/​most theatrically outfitted…
And, as is it should be, Funkanometry SF, FunkanometrySD, and Funksters were very much the headliners of their own event, showing passion, zeal, and creativity in all of their routines… In particular, the FunkanometrySF piece, «Lesson Learned», was an immensely sensual display of dance-​interpreted lust, passion, and jilted love. Easily, this was one of my favorite pieces of choreography in the entire show.
It would be terrific if this became an Annual endeavor as intended…

Its undeniable… the members of Funkanometry love and live their art…

It’s been almost 7 years since I last hit the hardwood floor surrounded by mirrored walls and balance bars.
I decided to go back to dancing and find my passion in the art again.
Funkanometry has recently been able to do that for me. The first session was a little intimidating since I was probably twice the age as some of the group in the Advanced class.
People of the company noticed I was new and welcomed me and made my first class (in 7 years!!) really comfortable.
I’ve attended their Hip Hop class and Emerson’s new Raw and Sexy class. What I love about the staff and services of Funkanometry is that their classes are very diverse as they switch choreographers each week to teach versatility. But, the capability to provide classes to all kinds of skill levels is very key and attractive to the community. People in attendance are those who just want to «try it out» to people who have all sorts of dance expierence. Their choice of music also adds to the value of the learning experience.
So far the choreographers I’ve had and the people attending them are very enthusiastic and open minded. What I once thought was intimidating is now something I find myself coming back to week after week.
