I am giving Rolando and his company one star, not because of the work they did, but for the work they did not do and for wasting my time.
I called to arrange for a meeting at my parents home where I am planning to do a complete remodel, starting with the downstairs. Since that initial meeting, there was no follow-​up, zero initiative, and no proposal. Being the customer and the one flipping the bill, I should not have to chase him down for a proposal. It was very apparent this was not a job he wanted to do as they probably do higher end work. The home is in a rough neighborhood located near the Cow Palace. If your home is located in a blue-​collar neighborhood, don’t waste your time calling these guys as they have no interest in providing services to your home and budget.

Rolando and his team are amazing. They helped us match the tile design in the lobby of a historic landmark building in downtown SF and install in the elevators. They do an excellent job cleaning up and are ultra detailed oriented. I would not hesitate to recommend them for any high e d project. Top notch!

Rolando and his team are phenomenal! Rolando is incredibly friendly, responsive, communicative, and a joy to interact with. His team (Erik, Colima, and Gregorio) were very nice and quite respectful of our home. They always put down cloths and left the place cleaner than when they came.
We had some major leaks and El Niño was coming so we had them redo our center patio and front exterior stairs. Rolando’s quotes were fair. He ended up having to invoice us for some extra costs but that wasn’t totally unexpected since we didn’t know exactly what would be there when we opened up the stucco and pulled up the tile. His time estimates were pretty accurate and he only had to go a day or two over what he initially planned.
The work they did was top notch. Rolando spent a lot of time helping us decide on a design. Once we decided and the tile arrived (which, incidentally, takes forever if it’s not in stock, so be sure to account for that in your planning) they worked quickly. They were very thorough, always encouraging us to authorize them to do it the right way — not the cheap or easy way. My father, who’s a general contractor, was there for some of the work and he was impressed with how they did the job. The finished product is gorgeous!

I called Rolando Fonseca to come by my mother’s home in San Francisco for an estimate to tile her kitchen and hallway. Additionally, I needed this project to start on my vacation week, so I can fly up to SF. Surprisingly enough he was able to carve out the time that was conducive to my schedule. A lot of contractors won’t commit to a time frame but he did.
Rolando and his crew were very professional. They were promptly at my mother’s house at 8 AM ready to start. They prepped the kitchen to ensure dust didn’t get everywhere and moved the appliances as needed. His crew worked fast, and was able demolish the existing floor at remarkable speed. Rolando was always present supervising his crew as well. Furthermore, he was in communication with me throughout the process to ensure that the project was to my satisfaction.
Also, did I fail to mention my mother can be a pain in the butt? Yes, as much as I adore her she can try a person’s patience. But these guys managed to smile and laugh it off, and continue to work with no problem. Thank goodness…
I like the fact that Rolando gave me an estimate and a completion time and stayed right on target. We were very happy with his workmanship and want him to return to remodel the bathroom.
I highly recommend Fonseca Marble & Tile to anyone who is looking to remodel their kitchen or bath.

Rolando and is team recently completed phase one of our kitchen redo. Step one was to replace the kitchen counter, sink/​fixtures and backsplash around this area.
Rolando really listens to what you want, then jumps in to recommend ideas to carry you forward. He suggested great local SF companies to select my new sink, faucets and tile. Just like him, these individuals were the top in terms of customer service proving excellent guidance, and follow up in a world of bewildering choices. My God there are a lot of stainless sinks, fixtures, and tile choices out there!
Things that really impressed me about Rolando and his team:
1. They show up when the say they are going to show up — not an hour early or an hour late
2. They are very careful to protect the rest of your home from damage while working.
3. The work is FANTASIC! My countertop and tiles are BEAUTIFUL and Rolando does not miss any detail (i.e. where should we place the filtered water dispenser, what sort of overhang should exist here or there, how do the tile seems line up with other elements — his thinks of everything and has a designer’s eye).
4. All the over and above things. For example, with a job like this there are often small details that require the contractor to return after the bulk of the work is done — Rolando will not let you down — he does what he says is going to do. He ran errands for me picking up and returning items to the supplier for me, touched up a few things at the end etc. until everything was perfect. It was the way a person would treat the project if it were their house. Impressive. Even my super detailed picky husband was 100% satisfied.
Honestly, these guys killed it in every way a customer would really want– the design guidance, finished product, the process, the professionalism. And all of this during a very busy time for them right now.
Rolando — we can’t thank you enough and I am daily in awe of my gorgeous gray quartz countertop and Carrera subway backsplash, with the excellent gray grout you guided me to! THANK YOU!

He must be great, as he is so busy he doesn’t return calls. I called multiple times, left a message detailed the work I needed performed and never received the courtesy of a return call. No, «Sorry, I am booked. for the next ten years, nada.»
I know when things cool down I will be seeing printed flyers in my mail box with «no job too small», etc. Bad business people are all the same.

Everyone who has ever remodeled a kitchen or a bathroom knows the old adage — double the $$ AND time the contractor tells you it will cost and take to complete the job. Rolando and the team at Fonseca are the exception. They completed our project on budget and on time. The complete kitchen renovation looks fantastic — great looking quartz counters and crisp subway tile backsplash. Rolando went above and beyond to make sure we picked the right materials and helped with design input. Definitely consider Fonseca for your next project, large or small.

We have a tile balcony outside and above our living room. When it started to leak, we contacted a number of contractors for repair work and, although there were a couple who were contenders for the job, talking to Rolando, and reading his reviews on Unilocal,were the deciding factors.
I am highly critical of any work done to our home, but I can’t find one thing to fault about Fonseca Tile. Rolando and his crew are true professionals. They were punctual, clean and, most of all, true craftsmen (you have to see the cuts on the tile and trim to fully appreciate their attention to detail).
There is simply not enough space in this review to fully relate how pleased we are with the finished product. If you need tile work, don’t waste your time. .. just call Rolando.

We recently had our master bathroom shower completely redone by Fonseca. This involved destruction, installing new tiles, a niche, bench, rain shower and additional plumbing/​fixtures.
Overall our experience was very positive.
Rolando was very punctual in showing up to assess the project and give us an estimate. At one point before the work was to start there was some confusion as to the final estimate due to an error by the office and Rolando honored the lowest price estimate which was very professional of him to do given the circumstances. We accrued a few small additional charges during the project, but they were not unreasonable.
Our project took about 2 weeks and finished right at the expected time. Throughout the project, Rolando was very accessible for us to consult with and make ongoing decisions regarding options for finishes, etc.
They were also accommodating when we changed our minds about our shower bench and asked for a change to be made after part had been completed. All of the workers were considerate and very attentive to cleaning up dust, etc each day and keeping the rest of the house spotless during the work.
We found the work quality to be very good and have been thrilled with the shower since it was completed.

When I look at my bathroom, I truly have fond thoughts, appreciation and gratitude for Mr. Rolando Fonseca and his team. It began on a Sunday, when they were closed. I left a message asking them to call me because I needed a granite deck for my bathtub. On Tuesday, when I did not hear from them, I called during business hours, again leaving a message. After connecting with them, they return calls very quickly, usually within 15 minutes to a half-​hour.
We set up an appointment, and Mr. Fonseca, along with the fabricator and another associate, came to my home to take measurements and see what needed to be done. He listened to what I wanted, gave some input, then later emailed me a quote. I especially appreciate that he made suggestions and gave ideas for color, shape and edging of the granite and grout to coordinate with the rest of my bathroom.
On the specified day, the fabricator and an assistant came to work in my bathroom. They cut the granite carefully so that everything looked beautiful and fit perfectly. Their workmanship was flawless. Their cuts resulted in several large usable «scraps;» Mr. Fonseca came up with ideas to use these leftover pieces for shelves and a small table in my garden.
When the fabricator and his assistant finished the job, they cleaned up and left my bathroom cleaner and tidier than they found it.
Mr. Fonseca works quickly and efficiently, yet in a professional, friendly and unhurried manner. He and his team were a pure pleasure and easy to work with. This was absolutely the smoothest and least stressful home project I have ever had. To top it off, their prices were the best. We have another bathroom to remodel, and we definitely will call Fonseca Marble & Tile.

I initially contacted Rolando Fonseca after reading Unilocal reviews. He was prompt, knowledgeable, and provided a very reasonable estimate for replacing the tub surround tile and linoleum tile floor that had been damaged by a leak in one of our bathrooms. I don’t think I’ve ever work done on my home by a more conscientious team. At the end of each work day, everything outside of the immediate work area was cleaned away, and the finished product is excellent. We asked for some additional work while his team was here, and they put new flooring in a stairway landing and replaced some areas with loose plaster with sheetrock that was ready to paint when they finished.
I note that another reviewer rated Fonseca Marble and Tile poorly because of unresponsiveness to emails. I had some problem with that, as well, initially, and Rolando gave me an alternate email that worked fine. I recommend using the business phone number and then ask for the best e-​mail address, if that is how you want to contact Rolando or his staff.
Fonseca Marble & Tile will be my first call for any tile work I need in the future.

Fonseca Marble and tile came to the rescue again! I have a big party coming up, and my darn front tile stairs (I have three levels) still looked sad! The only part that looked OK was the damaged corner that Rolando fixed last time!
I emailed Rolando and he came by to take a look and came up with a brilliant plan to both cosmetically upgrade the look AND protect from further water damage. The plan involved caulking in some places, and filling in gaps in the concrete and repairing and filling in missing grout,
No doubt I need new stairs in the future, but right now, I’m having a party!
Rolando and his team (Javier!) showed up on time, and worked hard all all day to fill in the gaps, caulk, regrout, clean, AND clean up, and Now! I have a decent looking stairway (So so so much better!)– that won’t get any worse any time soon!
It’s hard to find a professional to do a small job in a big way. Thanks Rolando!

Bumped into Rolando at a lunch place and talked with him about our leveling issue. He offered to come by with his team and take a look. They just left, and I’m really happy with the job they did. They figured out a subtle solution by polishing the stone down a bit more. It looks like it should work pretty well, and I couldn’t be happier with that customer service. Highly recommended.

I called, left a message and was contacted quite quickly. Rolando came over a few days later to give me a reasonable quote and the next day one of his partners, Eric, came by and did a great job installing some tile for us.

Rolando was recommended to our HOA by the painter that did the outside work last year. Of 3 quotations we obtained, his was the middle-​priced one to replace the lobby tile of our building. He came to the house a few months ago within 1 day and I was impressed with his knowledge and business-​like demeanor.
We sat on the project for a while but finally engaged him last week. His crew, including Rolando himself, Colima and Eddie showed up right on time, and were courteous and totally professional. They finished the job sooner than we expected and cleaned up every day.
I have now asked him to quote on a complete bathroom remodel and countertop replacement in another bathroom. He’s giving me several great ideas and has the right contacts for plumbing and demoltion. His cost estimates are fair & reasonable.
We had purchased the tiles for the lobby at the same we had our foyer tile replaced last year (another contractor), and Rolando is perfectly comfortable with the client providing or specifying their own materials, or he can recommend products, too.
After a bad experience with the other tile job last year, I was skeptical about this re-​do job, but Fonseca Marble & Tile is very high on my list now. I think my partners in this 2-​unit building may also be talking to him soon about a kitchen job. I recommend them whole-​heartedly.

Rolando and his crew were absolutely awesome! We just moved in to a new condo and had a backsplash placed in the kitchen along with getting our entire unit painted.
From initial consultation to completion of project. Rolando was very professional and attended to the most minute detail. His guys were very courteous, hard working, and professional.
They completed the project on time, as promised, and at a totally reasonable cost.
We are actually having them return to add a peninsula to our kitchen in a few weeks.

I really liked the owner, Rolando, as his commitment to detail;. I told them we’d be picky about the tile work in the kitchen. It was a new kitchen and the tiling would be the finishing touch.
They did very good work. But we noticed a day after paying that a few tiles were nicked. I called and asked why with left over tile they selected damaged pieces. They came back the next day and replaced all the pieces, and they wouldn’t sign off until we were completely satisfied.
They’re clean and efficient and honest.

We have a bit of history with Rolando and I’m happy to share my experiences.
Last year, Rolando and his crew re-​tiled our entire outdoor deck. This wasn’t an easy job given they had to strip the deck down to its studs and re-​lay the concrete in order to fix the sloping of our deck. Rolando worked with us from start to finish and even my extremely particular mother in-​law (aka Home Improvement Queen) praised his work. I agree that Rolando wasn’t the cheapest to work with based on the other estimates we’d received but I’m glad I trusted my husband’s intuition at the time to go with Rolando because «the guy seems to know what he’s doing.»
Fast forward one year later. We decided to replace our main bathroom shower pan and floor glass tiles (as we’d come to find out, glass tiles definitely look good but not the most ideal for floors!). In any case, we were remodeling two fairly large bathrooms so this was not a small job by any means. Which is why we solicited several estimates. Our preference was to go with Rolando but we thought it smart to get some other data points, right?
After meeting with the other tile installers, we ultimately decided to go with Rolando again (even though his estimate was highest!). The other guys we met with just didn’t seem knowledgeable enough and also didn’t really provide us with much guidance. It was also obvious they didn’t work a lot with high-​end materials. Given the magnitude of the job, we felt comfortable going with Rolando.
Both our bathrooms took a little over 2 weeks to complete and Rolando was there every step of the way. He came at the start of every day to give me and/​or my husband an update and checked in with his crew throughout the day (as reported by my housesitting parents). I saw the other review here about Rolando being non-​responsive and I’m actually quite surprised because he was always super responsive with us. And I’m not a very patient person!
All in all, we were very satisfied with the quality of the work that was done. Thanks Rolando!

Rolando did a fantastic job on our bathroom. We were able to collaborate with him to completely redesing our bathroom. He walked us through the advanatages and disadvantages of different materials and made sure we selected the products that would be durable yet look great.
The pictures posted here won’t do his work justice, but the bathroom came out amazing. Very clean, modern and exactly what we were looking for.

First off, I want to acknowledge that we found Fonseca Marble and Tile on Unilocal!Secondly, the pictures of the shower stall I have posted is the work of Rolando. The one with the 2-​tone Porcelain Eco-​Friendly tiles, multi-​colored glass floor. Rolando Fonseca, who is the owner is not your ordinary tile contractor. I’d like to point out a few points that made our decision to use his services.
#1) His shoes were off before we opened our front door upon meeting him for the first time! Point is, is that he cares about your home as if it were his own. He has respect for the largest investment in our lives, our sanctuary. Each work day, coverings were brought in to cover the floors. Work space was always tidy and cleaned up after the end of each day. Shop Vac was always present and «on.»
#2) He listens and explains! Unlike most contractors who think they know everything, Rolando has the patience to listen to what you want. If there is a question, and I had A LOT of them, he will answer them and make sure you understand the answer and also are satisfied with any explanation of the work performed. He is detail oriented.
#3) He’s always on time. Each work day was on schedule with what was promised and explained. If he were running late because of traffic, he will call to let you know. My time was never wasted. His dedicated staff (Eduardo & Enrique) do not speak much English, but they know what to do and take direction very well from Rolando. Execution was spot on.
#4) Rolando is «hands-​On» if needed. He knows what his staff is capable of and what their limits are. When it came to the detailed glass tile work required on our design, he came in to «do it himself.» He has great pride in the work required. He always emphasized that if the work is not according to the agreement, changes will be made to correct them. Although we never had that situation.
#5) Aside from his excellent work ethics, Rolando is a «foodie!» He is quite knowledgeable of the SF food scene. He knows quite a few high-​end restaurant owners. I assume it’s because he has done quite a bit of commercial work for these establishments.
Overall, we are very happy with the work from Fonseca Marble and Tile. We did our due diligence to interview 3 contractors and we have had personal experiences in the past with other contractors. He is the BEST we have worked with. We did not choose Rolando because of price. We chose him because we always believe you get what you pay for.
Lastly, his dedicated plumber and Shower Glass company are also great!
