Float Matrix

I purchased a Groupon for a 30 min infrared sauna and a 60 min float. I spoke to someone I believe was the manager or owner when I called to make my appointment and he was super friendly, informative and made me feel at ease to come in for my first time float.
Ok, so my excitement was definitely diminished when I arrived. First off, the facility is pretty dated and not in a classic way, lacks a soothing ambiance as well as privacy. When I arrived I had to wait in the in the cramped entryway that contains two chairs in the corner, while a man in a bathrobe stood nearby waiting for his friend to get done showering. Apparently, there is only one shower in the entire place so the chances of taking your time getting dressed, undressed or rinsed off might be slim because odds are there will be one or more people waiting directly behind the door to get in after you.
Eventually I was given a robe and shown the infrared sauna. Immediately I was struck by the lack of privacy. The employee gave me a glass of water and told me he would let me know when the half hour was up. He didn’t pull a curtain around the sauna area before he left so basically if the two men in the deprivation tanks next to me got out and turned the wrong way when exiting their curtained off area, they would see me totally naked in a tiny box WITH A GLASS DOOR!!! I asked the attendant if I was supposed to wear my robe in the sauna because the area seemed very exposed and he said it was my choice. So If I pulled the curtain around the sauna area myself how would he let me know when my time was up? Would I hear him in the sauna? (keep in mind he had to use a hushed tone because people were in the tanks nearby) Would he possibly have to peek his head around the curtain to get my attention? Not wanting to risk it I decided to keep my robe which was brutal, add to it that the sauna was, I kid you not, 2.5ft x 2.5ft, maybe 3×3 tops. Cramped is an understatement. The bench inside was app 2.5ft long and 12″ deep. I couldn’t lean back, couldn’t stretch my legs out, couldn’t even sit with my back against the side wall with my legs bended in front of me. I just sat straight up, feet on the floor, hands by my sides… in a robe… sweating. I’ve felt more comfortable and spacious sitting the middle seat of a fully booked flight for 6 hours on an economical airline. I didn’t expect it to be like the huge steam rooms at a health club but this was unbearable. I don’t have problem with small spaces but after 20 min or so I had had enough and left. I didn’t even bother with the float. All I wanted was to stretch my legs and get some fresh air.
In the end, not only did this experience not relax me but it kind of stressed me out.

I’ve been to Reboot spa and i enjoyed it very much (clean, private rooms, music, soothing… top of the line) then decided to try this place out. The fact that the pods themselves were old didn’t bother me so much, but my pod (#4 i believe) water temperature was not warm enough. Also there was some plastic sheath on the inside which made it feel a bit unclean. The towels were smelly, like someone stuck a wet, used towel in the dryer without washing it first, then we were asked to reuse the smelly towel which ruined my whole experience as i think of cleanliness and smell as an important feature in such establishments. There was only 1 shower, and there were 4 of us. So we had to wait in the tiny hallway with only 2 chairs until each of us finished showering. The whole atmosphere is like a drive through spa. Unclean, unsoothing… Also they knock on your pod when u need to come out which doesn’t help matters. If i could recommend one thing it would be focusing on cleanliness and comfort ambiance.

This place is nirvana! You would feel amazing and it is must to go eat afterwards! Senses are intensified!

Service and experience was excellent. Felt like home. Was a great experience. Could have used another floor sweep but other than that really clean and a good experience.

The staff was very friendly and answered all of my questions.
The shower is nice and private, though the towels are a little run down.
It was my first time doing a float and the experience was unlike anything I’ve ever done. I was a little uncomfortable at first in the tank but this was due to my own hang ups. I got over this pretty quickly and embarked on one of the most calming experiences of my life. I’m definitely converted and look forward to floating here in the future. I have trouble meditating at home, but in the tank you lose track of your body and are able to be with just your mind which was just what I needed.
They offer a great discount if you come back within 30 days which can make the experience significantly cheaper. I might try to do a 2 hour float next time!

I’ve done Float Matrix twice now because the first time was so good.
A typical float is an hour long, though I think it should be about 75 minutes.
Nonetheless, this sensory deprivation abyss is able to reformat my posture into an anatomically correct position. Though, like I mentioned earlier, I felt like I needed an extra 15 minutes to completely unwind.
The aftermath kind of feels like getting a massage, though I would not substitute it for the former because nothing compares to human touch.
It is definitely a relaxing experience, one may argue an out of body experience due to the pitch darkness and feeling of floating in a neverending sea. The environment conceptually lets your mind wander, and perhaps the moment of letting go in a dark void is what can be potentially transformational beyond a physical understanding.
It may take you beyond, maybe because the absence of light stimulates production of melatonin despite the short duration. It didn’t occur to me until float matrix to sleep in a very dark room-​so the pineal gland can operate properly, providing proper health functioning and the potential to transverse galactic realities. So yes, after the first time, I slept like a baby. It felt like gravity was nailing me down so hard to the bed.
The second time was good, but not as moving as the first time. I will be a regular though-​out of curiosity to see how the experience compares to the last. Never leave a good thing.

I am a regular at float matrix. For me, it is one of the most deep relaxation experiences that can be had: body and mind, in one hour in the city…(For reference, the only other place I have floated was years ago and far away.)
As I am a long term meditator, I usually find my time in the tank is a mini (dark) retreat. and when i re-​emerge, I feel I have been away a long time, and am much rejuvenated .
Staff is always very helpful. Facilities, from my perspective, are well kept up.

The facilities were great, the infrared was awesome, the float was out of this world. I didn’t have any visions like I wanted too but I did see a lot of shapes and colors and very vivid thoughts of being one with the universe. My friend had a vision of a flower growing out of the dirt into the air and becoming hands. Trippy. Afterwards I felt disoriented but in a complete bliss kind of way and my body felt amazing. The spa attendant was a young man who’s name I didn’t catch but he was extremely helpful and attentive.
Going back next month to get my float on for sure!!!

Not impressed at all. I floated at the other place in town the previous weekend, so my experience was biased by that. First, I got claustrophobia when the elevator came along to take me to the basement. The entire place is dated and a bit dingy. There are no private rooms, only curtains separating the float tanks and saunas. The tanks themselves are old, coffin-​like, and so dark that you can’t see inside them. Really, I’m supposed to climb naked into a black pit?!?
I had to wait 20 minutes to change into a robe, because the one shower room was occupied. Finally, after stripping, I discovered that the shabby robes didn’t even come close to fitting me. I’m big, but I’m not THAT big. Most spas have robes that fit me.
Since I wasn’t about to parade through the seating area and hallways in a robe that didn’t close, I put all my clothes back on and left. Kind of relieved, actually.

I left before I even got in the IR. The attendant took me in to get in the IR and told another woman she could get out and get in the shower. She responded by telling him that her flip flops were covered in bugs. I followed him to look and there they were, baby cockroaches swarming her flip flops. He told her he didn’t know what they were, and she told him «they’re cockroaches» and I said «they’re cockroaches.» he picked up the flip flops with the clockroaches on them to carry them away and there were more baby cockroaches crawling under them. I high-​tailed it out of there before my personal belongings could be infested.
And used dirty flip flops, yuck. I’m forfeiting my living social investment. They should use it to clean up the place.

The facilities are clean and well maintained.
The service was excellent.
The pricing policy was more than reasonable.
Will become a regular here, will return soon.

My husband got us a couples float to kick off my birthday. We had no prior floating experience and only heard good things about what the experience would be like. We arrived late but they were still gracious enough to allow us to float for the entire hour. My husband and I both had different experiences but positive ones.
For him, it was the deepest meditative state he had ever been in. All of his aches and pains went away and he came out feeling like a new man.
For me, I am a little claustrophobic so I was hesitant to close the door all the way. I did freak out and had to sit up and open the door for a little bit because the air in the tank was hot and stuffy. After I calmed myself down I laid back and tried to relax but my breathing was so loud. My earplugs kept falling out so I did most of the float without earplugs. After some time, I felt myself spinning and drifting away and finally relaxed. It was only at that moment that I got the knock on the tank letting me know my float was over.
I highly recommend going to Float Matrix. The people are nice and supportive and the float experience is unlike any other. We will definitely be back.

This is the first time I’ve ever been in an isolation tank so I don’t have any thing to compare it to (thus 4 stars, not 5). It was definitely an interesting experience to say the least. Lots of forced introspection I don’t think I would have had outside of this experience.
My husband wanted to try this for his birthday so I did a quick Unilocal search and found Float Matrix and gave them a call to make the appointment.
First off, in customer service the person I talked to (I think Kane?) was incredibly polite and helpful in explaining to me what it is and what to expect. Booking the appointment was painless and super simple. Also, he noticed that our appointments were 2 separate single ones and gave us a discount when he switched it over to the Couples.
On the day of the appointment we got there about 30 mins ahead of our time slot and we were given a walk through. The location was clean, well kept, and gave off a very soothing vibe.
I can’t tell you if the tank was spotless as it was, literally, pitch black inside but I didn’t feel the need to worry as generally it all seem to be kept together nicely. The only issues I had were things I did to myself (ie. messing around with my ear plugs after getting in the water and trying to scratch my face with salt water dripping into my eyes). Other than that it was a different experience that I think is worth doing at least once.
Words of advice for newbies: Don’t even bother having makeup/​product on when you get there, it’s all gonna have to come off before. Make sure your earplugs are in tight BEFORE you get in. If your face feels itchy try to ignore it cause the salt water burns like a mother when it gets in your eyes.

I went last Sunday after seeing a deal on Groupon. I had never really looked into this type or experience so it was definitely and impulsive decision. I mean the idea of floating in the dark inside a tank sounds unusual at the very least. I was pleasantly surprised with the overall experience.
I initially had a hard time finding it — there’s a small street sign outside on the sidewalk, but I wasn’t paying too much attention. There’s a code they provide and then you have to read the signs to find it. I would have liked if the website disclosed the instructions for entering — the last thing you want to do is be confused and stressed trying to find this relaxing place.
Moving along, Chris was there — super cool guy. A great demeanor and the tone was appropriately calming yet friendly. I had a 30 min infrared sauna session to start and my only issue was that there was no timer — I feel like I got out maybe 20 minutes in because I was unsure. To Chris’s defense, it was a busy day and he was there working alone.
On to the floatation — I loved it. Contrary to other reviews, I found it to be completely silent (no sound coming from the streets above or anything!). It was experience I would gladly go through again. You’re restless at first and it feels stuffy but once you get inside your head and just relax, it’s worth it.
The only reason I can’t give this place 5 stars is because my initial concern is always sanitation. Upon opening the tank, Chris caught an ear plug floating around in the tank and took it out — being the germaphobe that I am… I still ignored it. Upon my exiting of the tank I found the second stray ear plug that had apparently been floating with me the entire time. The more I think about it, the more it bothers me. How clean are the tanks? I’d be inclined to return, but wouldn’t pay full price given the concern I have.
So what is the regulation and procedure for cleaning these tanks after every float? I’d like to know for my own peace of mind.

Absolutely fantastic service and a wonderful experience! Superior for the price. I recommend everyone to try floating at least once in their life and if you are in SF, do it here.
I interacted with Chris and he was extremely helpful. I found him to be a gentle soul which totally fit the environment and added to my positive experience.

I had made an appointment for myself and a friend of mine was interested in joining me very last minute. Kane accommodated the last minute adjustment with ease and greeted us like a dear friend. He was personable and welcoming which complemented the relaxing experience like a perfect wine paring at a nice dinner.
His accelerating discount system makes it affordable for you to keep a regular float routine and melt the stress of the world away.

The float tank is quite small. I’ve floated at other places, and Float Matrix has the smallest tanks I’ve seen. The float tanks also look like they’re at least 15 years old.
The shower is all the way across the room, so you have to put on your robe and walk across the hall before you can start washing off the salt water. The shower is also in a group locker room instead of a private area.
The general area is in a basement with no natural lighting. There aren’t really any decorations or plants. The whole experience was not very calming.

First time going into a sensory deprivation chamber.
I had a blast. It was as if I was floating into the depths of space and whatnot. I experienced an out of body experience ten minutes into the chamber, and felt like my consciousness was out of my own body. It was a very surreal and relaxing experience.
The owner, Kane was awesome as well. We chopped it up for about ten minutes after my session. I was talking to him about OBE’s and he told me other methods I can use in order to achieve them.
He even signed me up for the accelerating discounts program after my first session. I will definitely be coming back soon. Still need to try out the IR sauna.

I travel quite a bit and wherever I go, I look for a place to float. Of all of the places that I’ve floated, I like the closed Samadhi floats the best.
No gravity. Nothing to see. Nothing to listen to except your own mind. It’s very therapeutic.
I’d float daily if I had one of these.
One thing that stuck out to me about Float Matrix was the lady working there, Marie or Maria… She has one of the most zenful, beautiful souls that I’ve encountered on my journeys.
My experience was peaceful and healing, followed by some engaging, nurturing conversation with Maria.
I’ll definitely visit Float Matrix next time I’m in SF, plus… The more you go, the greater the discount!

So, the experience was overall very pleasant — everything from the smooth check-​in to the facilities were pleasant: «A-​OK», which is 3 stars. Can’t say I’m a fan…
Here is why: we had a LivingSocial for IR Sauna and a tank. The sauna was nice, but I am not sure 30 minutes is a good time and it is very tiny. The tanks didn’t seem very fresh or nice (I added pictures), and by the end of the hour it got so stuffy inside I could barely breath. I also was bumping from one wall to another, and my husband (in the tank next to me) later complained he could hear it all even with ear plug.
On the positive note, the greeter was very helpful and the rest of the facilities is very-​well thought out. Robes, flip-​flops, unlimited towels, earplugs are all GREAT touches! May be I just can’t relax… and it’s my fault?
