Ferry Building Marketplace

I think this is something not to be missed if in San Francisco for any reason. I think we were fortunate to go as a group at 8am before it got crazy but great building with lots of local things to partake in. I ate seafood, mexican, Indian, etc. That was all inside the building. Turns out behind it there are tons more to eat and do and a great view on the water. Lots of great shopping as well. It’s near the trolly, the cable car, and almost any transportation gets you here. Great outdoor market in front with tons of art and local stuff. Go here!

Love this building and the marketplace. You can actually get a ferry to Sausalito here, or you can just eat your day away. There are so many great food choices and tastings. I’d really recommend the Cowgirl Creamery and Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream! But there is also a meat shop, olive oil shop, a couple of bakeries, a wine bar, an oyster bar, etc etc.

To me, the actual building reminds of what Ponce City Market (PCM) should be (
). Well — what PCM strives to be. I can only imagine maybe in 2 – 3 years they’ll maybe reach ¹⁄₃ of the Ferry Building Status.
SF Tourists should for sure check this place out. It’s in a great location, has loads of stuff to see, and fun places to eat.
My group went on a Saturday and boy was it packed and poppin’. You can walk outside — the view was so pretty and since the building is near a dock, you’ll see the waters and the boats. You’ll also see a ton of stands side by side that sell food and cool stuff. The food sold is delicious. Well — the breakfast food was. Folks in my group said it was much better than your typical stand. Oh — there are some benches outside you can sit on when you’re eating. No formal tables though.
Inside the building, there’s even more food places and shops. I wish I could have a bite at place! Smelled amazing.
Honestly, worth a trip. Even if you’re not hungry. The hustle and the atmosphere of the Ferry Building are enough to make you see what’s going on.

Really enjoy this tourist hotspot. It has some really good restaurants and stores. The farmers market runs every saturday. Great views around the area and I can walk to other areas in town like Union Square, Chinatown, North Beach, Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39. It’s about an 8 mile trek to walk through all these areas and back.
Some street parking is nearby along with some parking structures. Everything is expensive since it is SF and a tourist destination. Get there early if you want parking nearby and avoid the crowds. Saturday is the best day to visit.
My favorite places in the Ferry Building besides the farmers market are Hogs Island restaurant, Blue Bottle coffee and the two meat shops.

We love this place. We go every time we are in SF. Warning, it can get CRAZY busy at times. This last time we went on a Saturday… DON’T. The farmer’s market is also going on at the same time. It was shoulder to shoulder. We much prefer it during the week day.
They have a little of everything. Restaurants, bakeries, creameries, desserts, ice cream, olive oil, coffee shop, etc. Most things are probably the best of their kind… ie Blue Bottle, Cowgirl Creamery, Miette, etc.

There’s a variety of food offered from ice cream to seafood. You can find anything your heart desires. The view is amazing as well! My only complaint is that there are hardly any seatings. Once you get your food (mostly to go), there’s nowhere to sit and eat. If you’re lucky, you might be able to find a small table outside with the view of the bay. Otherwise, I hope you like eating while standing in the corner somewhere.
It gets even more crowded on the weekends, especially Saturday since there is a farmers market so the lines are a lot longer. If you’re going for lunch, I suggest adding an additional 20 – 30 minutes of wait time, especially at places like Roli Roti or Humphry Slocombe.

Pretty cool spot in San Francisco with a few variety of shops and eateries. It’s not a huge marketplace, they have a few shop vendors and eateries, not many but it’s still nice.
Came here on a Friday evening and it was pretty calm. Not too busy which maybe because it was end of the day and shops would be closing soon. Parking was very difficult to find and took us quite sometime.
There are various interesting local businessess and farmers market such as ice cream shops, restaurants, farmers market, olive oil producers, cheese shops. There’s even a wine bar. The view of the bay bridge from the other side is pretty. There is also outdoor shops outside the ferry building to stroll around, shop and eat.
Definitely a nice stop in the city to spend a couple of hours.

This is a pretty cool place. Word for the wise… stay away from here on a nice and sunny Saturday because there are people for DAYS. You literally could not even go to some of the shops even if you wanted to because of the number of people parked in front of the stores. The building really is not large enough for the amount of food traffic that comes through. And the stores really don’t have anywhere to even sit down to enjoy the food they offer. I did try, however, some of the fresh clams and oysters offered at one of the stores and they were amazing. I give the Ferry Building a 4 because of the coolness factor, but dropping a star because it really isn’t practical and the prices are a little out of hand. I realize that they are charging based on what they need to pay for space in that building, but holy cow. One store was trying to sell a canvas grocery-​like bag for $ 129 haha.
But anyways. Maybe try coming here during the week when you can beat the crowds because I don’t think you can truly enjoy what it has to offer when there are so many people.

WOW, a little of everything inside this place. Great restaurants, shops, and tasty goodies. Definitely try the Cowgirl Creamery and their melted cheese on lightly toasted bread. It’s only set up out front of the store at certain times. Also the best Farmers Market on weekends you will find. Plan on several hours to walk around and eat lunch at one of the many restaurants.

For the avid explorers and foodies, this place had an array of options for every taste bud. Ranging from seafood to Chinese food to Italian and little side vendors that specialize in sweets, coffees and teas, and even mushrooms!

Lots to see and eat at this spectacular marketplace center at the Ferry Building. Farmers Market takes place Tues, Thurs, and Saturday. Views of the water and the Bay Bridge make your visit worthwhile along with shopping local and organic produce. Vendors and food stands galore, selling high end tableware, specialty grocery, and lunch all in one stretch.
I was a little disappointed that Roli Roti was closed on Tuesdays and currently Cowgirl Creamery is undergoing renovation.
Do your research beforehand if you want to avoid being overwhelmed by the selection. The options to me, may be the best part, so grab a few friends and get to trying and sharing your culinary bites and buys. As been said, we tried the meat cone at Boccalone, empanadas from El Porteno, and candies from Miette. Nothing to write home about, but fun to try everything.
Tip: Avoid the throngs of people on the weekends and come on a weekday, if you can. For mommas who are driving with your little ones or other drivers: Validated parking is available Tuesday and Thursday at the ACE lot located on the Embarcadero and Washington St. Per the CUESA website as of 05/​2016, $ 3/​hour for the first 2 hours with validation; $ 7/​hour after that). Most vendors will validate if you are a customer.

Oh Ferry Building, you are always there for me when I need a place to take visitors. The Ferry Building is possibly my favorite «tourist spot» in the city. There isn’t exactly a lot to do per say but I can easily kill an hour or two just walking around the little shops and pondering what I want to eat. It’s also a great place to sample foods like cheese, almond brittle, olive oil, etc. Don’t forget to actually buy some of their products because they are very tasty!
Like anywhere in SF, parking is a pain. Luckily it is located only a block or two away from the Embarcadero station so the walk is very easy. The building itself also has a great view of the Bay and restrooms. The only downside I’ve experienced here is lack of general public seating and the short hours.
Tip: Go to the hotel across the street and sneak up the elevator to the top floor for a gorgeous view of the building.

Yes, this is a must visit spot! Not only is the building itself beautiful and borders the ocean, but it is a food lovers paradise. But, it’s not JUST food, they have beauty and household good store fronts too.
Try to line up your trip with one of the Ferry Buildings Farmers Markets. Fresh fruits and vegetables galore and lots of additional local vendors (everything from seafood establishments to bakeries to olive oil producers and can and jammers). First, before you feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of visual stimulation, take a walk through the building. Scope out the shops and restaurant fronts. One great thing about the Ferry Building is that it is not Mall Food Court, you won’t find many (if any) of the establishments trying to get you into their door first. This is a great place to «appetizer» hop and sample bites from literally around the globe.
My recommendations: meat cup from Boccalone ($ 5) filled with incredible proiccuitos and samumis, make sure you peak into their cured meats coolers. Grab a number off the wall at Cowgirl Creamery and do a cheese tasting. Purchase some cheese to go or try their house-​made sandwiches at the shop next door. Try an expensive empanada at El Porteno Empanadas (apparently voted number 15 on the top 100 things to do in San Fransisco – so the shop says). Take a peak at the incredible mushrooms at Far West Fungi! Stand in line for a coffee at Blue Bottle (or leave the Ferry Building and head across the street for a true California experience at Philz!) Try a $ 2 oyster or clam at San Fransisco Seafood Company. But be careful, that atomic horseradish sauce really is HOT! Go out on a lim, try something new, honestly, it’s hard to go wrong and trying is half the fun.

Das historische Ferry Building ist zum überdachten Marktplatz umgebaut worden und beherbergt nun viele kleinen und große Anbieter, die regionale Lebensmitteln und Angeboten zum Kochen und vor Ort essen, anbieten. Das Angebot ist ebenfalls auch auf Spezialitäten, die biologisch angebaut und hergestellt wurden, ausgerichtet.
Man schlendert durch die großen Hallen und kann hier und da Sachen probieren und sich einfach treiben lassen. Perfekt für einen Tag, der wettertechnisch vielleicht etwas kühl ist. Denn der Wind in Wassernähe weht schon kräftig.
Das alte Gebäude hat seinen Charme von damals nicht eingebüsst und man sieht den großen Uhrturm schon von Weitem. Das Building ist liebevoll renoviert worden und wieder in seinen Ursprungszustand zurückgeführt worden, nachdem eine wechselvolle Geschichte mit wirtschaftlichen Hochs und Tief und diversen Erdbeben hinter sich gebracht hat.
Als San Francisco Reisender sollte man hier unbedingt einen Blick reinwerfen.
Ist man auf der Market Street unterwegs, braucht man diese nur Richtung Wasser weiterlaufen und kommt direkt auf das Gebäude. Kaum zu verfehlen. Auch ohne Karte oder mobiles Navi gut zu finden.
Der Weg von hier zum Pier 39 und Fisherman’s Warf geht dann einfach nur noch an der Promenade entlang.

Our weekend SF getaway was basically a weekend of being tourists. The Ferry Building was our first stop. The Farmers Market was practically «hipsters on steroids», according to my fiancé. We loved all the sampling at the booths. We even picked up a few goodies to bring back home (eg. organic garlic salt, apple caramels and granola).
Since we had a late breakfast at the hotel, we didn’t try any places inside Ferry Building. It was extremely overwhelming. You pretty much need to know exactly where you want to eat, because it’s so spread out and the selection of eateries is enormous. However, I found out later from a cousin of mine, that I need to try the ahi burger, with garlic fries and a white pistachio shake at Gott’s Roadside. That would be his «last meal on earth». That’s a huge statement to make right there!

Parking and traffic is terrible around the area. I usually park at the meters a few blocks away.
Like I said, it is always crowded on weekends and in the morning/​brunch time.
I would consider it dog friendly on the outside but it was pretty stressful because my dogs got anxious from all the smells and people around.
Great selection of food, coffee, desserts, and random things you find at a market. Not much space to eat if you buy from the carts, so you have to find a bench and eat there.

The Ferry Building Marketplace is truly an iconic part of San Francisco, not only because of how gorgeous it looks in the daytime and illuminated by fairy lights at nighttime and during holidays, but also because of the famous and fantastic San Francisco based artisan shops that are contained within the Ferry Building.
It houses one of my favorite ice cream shops, Humphrey Slocombe, the famous Blue Bottle Coffee, Miette Patisserie, a wine and cheese shop, various restaurants, and the list goes on.
Not to mention the gorgeous view of the Bay it has in the back of the building where you can look out and see the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz, and various boats sailing that day.
Oh and did I forget about the glorious Farmer’s Market that happens in front of the Ferry Building every Saturday morning?
To me, the Ferry Building represents everything I love about The City, from its world-​famous foods to its gorgeous views and to my absolute favorite — its sense of history and community. Whenever I look at the building or have the opportunity to roam around the marketplace, I feel a huge sense of pride at being able to call this city and the entire Bay Area home, and I always introduce tourists to the Ferry Building because of course it is a foodie heaven and also that they can get a sense of that pride as well.

The Ferry Building market place is a really nice place to spend a few hours if you are down in the Embarcadero area. In fact, it’s only a few minutes walk from the Embarcadero Bart station, and sort of close to Pier 39, Fisherman’s Wharf and Chinatown. The charm of this place is the various shops both inside, and the nice farmer’s market that we visited on a Saturday morning. They really have unique, non franchise shops inside, and serve a wide variety of ultra high quality fare. During the Farmer’s market, one of our favorites things to do is wander around and pick up food from the various vendors and then sit and watch the bay bridge.
One thing we have never done, is actually take the Ferry to this building. That’s a must try the next time we come down here. Always fun to people watch here as well!

How have I not reviewed the Ferry Building Marketplace? This place is one of my favorite stops in San Francisco and is a perennial favorite of me and millions of other visitors. The restored Ferry Building sits at the base of Market Street on the bay near the Embarcadero Station and is easily recognized by the classic clock tower and signage.
Whether you arrive by land or by sea, the marketplace quickly overwhelms your senses. This is a gourmet market with many indoor permanent businesses and many external farmers markets. Many of the purveyors stock the best items available in the city. Far from a tourist trap, this is an authentic foodie paradise.
It is also a transit hub for several ferries and located on the MUNI. The Saturday Farmers Market is especially crowded and wonderful lingering around sampling foods and buying something special for dinner.
The architecture of the building is equally impressive with excellent views of the city and the bay and encourages long strolls, even while dodging strollers and gawking tourists.
This should be a top destination if you enjoy the finer things in life or just want to see lots of happy people!

One of my favorite destinations when visiting San Francisco. I love everything about this building. The history, watching the ferries, being by the water, the shopping, the food and the people watching.

A European feel, open marketplace. Very unique merchants and a great place to pick up gifts for others from chocolates, organics, cheeses, wine and more.
The bathrooms are clean and its easy to get to. The ferry terminals are part of this area and it is always hopping with people. I recommend the mushroom shop and the bread shop.

It was so enjoyable to have the opportunity to visit the Ferry Building Marketplace multiple times over this past weekend.
Something I found interesting about my experience here was the difference in the hustle and bustle of it all from day to day. After checking in at the Hyatt Regency SUPER close by at about 5:30 on Friday evening, my husband and I decided to explore the area on foot and get some food before a SketchFest show. We ended up arriving some time after 6:30 pm to find that a lot of the vendors were getting ready to close for the evening, though they were still eager to help us in our search for a light dinner. I noticed how quiet it was and that there were so few people walking around — and for a couple that just spent nearly 2-​and-​a-​half hours in traffic getting to SF from San Jose, this was a welcomed sight. Because it was so close to closing for a lot of the businesses, we told ourselves we would come back on Saturday to scope it out further.
The next day, it was a whole different atmosphere; there were people everywhere getting breakfast and shopping the farmer’s market. I particularly enjoyed ducking out of the crowds and getting to walk along the water behind (or in front of, depending how you look at it) the building along the bay. You may not get to go far, but the sights are awesome. I would definitely liken the Marketplace to San Pedro Square Market in San Jose — only with more diverse vendors and infinitely better views; I can’t wait until I have the chance to go back!

One of my favorite places in San Francisco, if not the only one.
This ferry marketplace was just like a farmer’s market, where you could purchase all kinds of California-​made fruits/​meat/​delis, as well as daily produced dairy goods. I even found one blue bottle coffee shop next to the entrance, a place I visit frequently back in New York. The entire hallway was not at all fancy, yet it provided me a familiar hometown type of feeling. I would like to return here every time visiting this area.

Cute marketplace with delicious and fresh products. I love the outdoors market when I visited on a Saturday where there were many vendors with booths set up outdoors and DELICIOUS and sweet samples of many fruits grown locally in California.
The Ferry Building Marketplace has two visible floors, though only the first floor is used as a marketplace. Just inside the building consists of a few stores (not too big), compared to other markets I have been to. Definitely come here nice and early and try out the blue bottle coffee — a classic selection of San Francisco residents!
In terms of the price however, these products are EXPENSIVE. $ 40 for soya sauce!!! I guess that was a good brand of soya sauce. I saw a few Lee Kum Kee ones that are still more expensive than your ChinaTown vendors. I guess the raise in prices suggests that the Ferry Building Marketplace is a tourist area?

Das alte Ferry Building ist zur Markthalle gewandelt, was uns sehr gut gefallen hat. Es ist so gut wie alles an Lebensmitteln zu kaufen und zu probieren über Olivenöl, Fleisch, Brot und o weiter! Die Preise sind auch nicht höher als woanders uns scheint aber die Qualität besser zu sein, also auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert!

Le Ferry Building, construit dans les années 1890 au bout de Market Street, l’artère centrale de la ville, a bien résisté au tremblement de terre de 1906 et mérite toujours son nom aujourd’hui car il reste le point de départ de quelques lignes de ferry autour de la Baie. Évidemment, depuis la fin des années 1930 et la construction des deux grands ponts de la ville, son activité n’a plus rien à voir avec l’affluence qu’il connaissait à son heure de gloire (jusqu’à 60 millions de passagers annuellement !), et partait à l’abandon.
Heureusement il a fait l’objet d’une rénovation intelligente il y a une dizaine d’années, dédiée à l’artisanat local, au travers de boutiques et restaurants valorisant la production et la gastronomie californiennes. Le résultat aujourd’hui est une sorte de halle très plaisante à parcourir, entre les bistrots, bars à vin, boutiques de cosmétiques, vendeurs de glaces, créateurs de mode locaux… le tout aussi qualitatif qu’agréable à l’œil.
Présence de WC gratuits et accessibles à tous (pas seulement aux clients des restos).
Très bonne adresse donc pour flâner, se faire plaisir ou trouver le bon cadeau à ramener de SF !

OK, yeah. I’m ‘tarded and of course I am talking about the whole Saturday market and not just the Marketplace. But, still. Soooooo many great shops and good things to eat and drink here.

A little crazy on a rainy Saturday but a lot cool for an experience of San Francisco. Several restaurants are open, even if it’s not a Farmer’s Market Day. Expect the crowds and you’ll be fine. This place is awesome and I had about a half hour to wander while waiting for my friend’s ferry to arrive from Vallejo.
