I have a PhD in math. I’ve been doing mathematics for a long time. However, I am not at all enamored by the subjects taught in most high school math courses. Frankly, practically all subjects after algebra are rather esoteric and pointless and should only be taught as an elective for those who have a desire to continue with that learning. Calculus? Differential Equations? When’s the last time people, in general, use them? The only time I use calculus is when I tutor or teach the subject. Now, don’t get me wrong. I think calculus is one of the pinnacles of man’s intellectual achievements. So was the phoenician language, but you don’t see too many people required to learn that nowadays. I understand, you want your child (or yourself) to be well versed in math to increase the chances of being accepted at a top-​tier college. I get that. But when college tuition is rising at 4 times inflation, and when your ninth grader child goes off to college, she or he may be looking at $ 80,000/year tui
