Established in 2010.

Alexander Tutoring was founded by Sean Alexander who is a professional educator and physicist. For years Sean was a high school math, physics and astronomy teacher. He went on to complete his graduate work in physics and founded Alexander Tutoring to combine his passion for education and the physical sciences. Sean tutors math and physics at all levels to all ages.

Hello, my name is Sean Alexander and I love my job! I am fortunate enough to make a living combining my two passions of physics and teaching. I studied physics first at UCSB and then followed with graduate work at SF State. There I was fortunate enough to teach astronomy to incoming freshman. I then began my career as a professional educator. For five years I taught all levels of math and physics to high school students. One of the high schools I taught for specialized in students with severe learning disabilities. This was a huge challenge and forced me to grow as a teacher. I have been involved with learning disabilities ever since. Four years ago I decided to combine my passion for teaching and physics by founding Alexander Tutoring. I now tutor algebra, geometry, pre calculus, calculus and physics at all levels. My students learn much more than just math. They develop confidence, study skills, motivation, a love of learning, and a curiosity about the world around them.

Sean pulled my son up from the abyss last year in physics. There was no pulling teeth to get my son to go for sessions. This year, Sean was our pre-​calc go-​to. It was a really difficult class, and Sean was available for an emergency FaceTime session, and was also really responsive to my frequent inquiries. I recommend without reservation.

In her first year of high school, my daughter was struggling with physics, and Sean was able to use his knowledge, skills, and patience to help her learn what she was not learning in class. Sean has tutored our son who is currently a junior in high school for the past 3 months. Math has always been a strong subject for our son and for whatever reason it has been a struggle for him in the last year or so. Not only was he suffering in math my husband and I were worried that he was also losing interest in math which had always been one of his best subjects. Ever since Sean has started working with our son his math grade has dramatically improved and we think he is starting to like math again.

Sean is fantastic.
Sean tutored our son in honors physics. Our son just completed 10th grade at a competitive high school in SF and just missed an A in the first term by a percentage point. Sean helped him improve his score in the second term to an A with plenty of room to spare. Yea Sean. Gifted teacher, communicator and good guy as well.

Sean is someone in whom you can trust your student’s academic present and future! He helped our 11th Grade daughter tremendously so far this year, so that she has been able to pull a solid high A in a physics class where the teacher «does not» give A’s.
Most importantly though, Sean was able to establish a rapport with our daughter so that she could go deeper in her learning and further develop a passion for physics as she mastered the material and learned to feel an ownership of that mastery.

I was referred to Sean by my daughters former Math teacher when she was having trouble transitioning from Integrated Math into Pre-​Cal. She went from being an A math student her whole life to getting the first F she had ever received in any class. After working with Sean for a short time she made significant progress. My daughter has a learning difference, and Sean was able to work with her on strategies. In addition to helping her with the basics, he helped her re-​gain her confidence. He was great about keeping me in the loop and addressing any concerns, and is very responsive. My daughter also enjoyed his teaching style and found him much more informative and helpful than her Pre-​Cal teacher and the tutors provided by her school. He really helped us tackle and move past a horrible experience.

Sean tutored my son in AP Physics and did a lovely job. My son is gifted in math and in the sciences, but he was jumping into this as the only high school junior in a class of seniors. At the time my son had not completed a calculus class nor had he taken any regular physics prior to enrolling. Sean really helped him fill in any gaps he had. As a tutor Sean was patient, kind, and flexible. Sean can work well with both gifted and challenged kids. I recommend him highly.

Sean is a wonderful math tutor! Sean tutored both of my boys, in grades 8 and 6. Very different situations, equally great results — I’m highly satisfied with Sean.
Last year, my 8th grade son needed help with the math sections in the SSAT/​ISEE exams — the exams required of San Francisco’s private and parochial high school applicants. My eldest son was stressed about the math sections, but Sean calmly and enthusiastically diagnosed which areas needed help, and tackled each area of need. Sean provided guidance and very practical tutoring, including drills and reinforcement. Sean was very patient throughout it all. My son made big gains, did great on the actual exams, and got into his top high schools. Thank you Sean!
My 6th grader was in a completely different situation. This younger son absolutely loves math, was bored at school, and I approached Sean about providing summer math enrichment tutoring for him. I wasn’t sure exactly what this entailed, but I trusted Sean would figure out it. Sean did — with accolades. My math loving son was thrilled with finally being challenged and completely engaged. They explored all sorts of math concepts, advanced topics, and very practical techniques to reduce errors and develop good math habits. This son had a great summer of math and wants to continue lessons during the school year so he can continue his independent study and love for the subject. By the end of the summer, my 6th grader is doing 11th grade work.
Bottom line, Sean is an effective teacher who understands kids, figures out how to help each one individually and engages them through the process. My husband and I highly recommend Sean!
