History

Established in 1908.

For 100 years, the Embarcadero YMCA has been building strong kids, strong families and strong communities. Founded on Beale Street as an Army/Navy YMCA, the Embarcadero YMCA served soldiers shipping in or out of San Francisco. It was so popular that in 1917, locals called for a dedicated facility. Built in 1926, our current building was a hotel and social club for enlisted men. Fast forward to the 70s – times were changing: women began to be admitted. In the 80s the residential hotel was leased to the Kimpton Group to become the Harbor Court Hotel. After the 1989 earthquake, when the Embarcadero freeway came down, views opened up and membership grew. All along, we offered the camp programs, swim lessons and community programs the Y is famous for. Today, with a new satellite on Treasure Island, after school enrichment programs for elementary school students and children from formerly homeless families, we’re still here, better than ever, enriching lives in spirit, mind and body.
