Dan Simon, DDS, MMSc – Stonestown Endodontics

So, I’ve got a beard and chest hair, I drink my whiskey straight and eat super spicy food without flinching. I’m a manly man.
However when it comes to dentists and having dental work done I loose all my hair, wear a tutu and suck my thumb. I’m a dental pansy.
when I had to have two root canals done my main dentist referred me to Dr. Simon. I was extremely nervous and anxious about the procedure. Walking through the building to get to the office it looked dated and drab and I could already smell the latex gloves and sterilized equipment from various practices. The sinking feeling in my gut was intensifying as I was thinking about the pain I would endure.
When I walked into the actual office it was nice, almost like a fancy coffee shop. I was greeted by two friendly receptionists and filled out out the necessary paperwork. Generic music was playing a touch too loud to be background music but not interesting enough to be mood music but I’m nit picking. Dr. Simon came out and introduced himself and said he would be with me shortly. Soon after his assistant called me in and I was seated in the chair, THE CHAIR, and started looking at all the instruments around that would soon surely scar me for life. My nerves were on high alert and I wanted none of this.
Dr. Simon then came in and explained everything, told me the work part would the the local anesthetic and then rest would be fine. I believed none of it and imaged it would all be horrifying and excruciating. He work very quickly and as i thought i was around the halfway point of the operation, I was done.
I was wrong, he was right. The shots to get numbed up were unpleasant but everything else was fine. Don’t let me mislead you, someone was still drilling into my teeth so it wasn’t enjoyable but it wasn’t painful like I feared. I also feared the pain i would feel once the local wore off and insisted I be given pain meds. Again still not believing, and again i was still wrong. The next day i had only the most minor pain, certainty not worthy of prescription meds, however I’m still happy he gave them to me, better safe than sorry. I have a habit of hurting myself anyhow so I’m sure they will find purpose.
So in summary, I’m not good with dentists, I thought I was gonna have a bad time, Dr. Simon did a really good job, I was wrong and didn’t have a bad time. Very happy with results.

This is an exceptional practice, both in the quality of the clinical care and in the care and support given to the patient. The office staff reports up front what the likely cost will be to the patient. Dr. Simon genuinely connects to his patients and takes the time to give a thorough explanation of your procedure and the expected outcomes. The office calls to ask about any concerns following the procedure, and Dr. Simon is available to contact after hours if needed. It is refreshing to see such devoted care. That kind of approach is not only memorable; it also supports patients during a time they are worried and concerned. I’m grateful for the outstanding capability of the entire clinic’s staff in addition to the rare pairing with supportive, genuine, and patient care. This clinic is one in a million!

Dr. Simon and staff are awesome in every way. Really… truly… I’m not lying… IF you have to go to an Oral Surgeon, you will thank Unilocal and all the other 5 Star Reviews for making sure you are cared for expertly, with kindness and respect. They are amazing.

Attention fellow reviewers: This ain’t no bogus review. Its a real review from a real Unilocaler who had a real killer toothache. And there aiin’t nuttin more real than a toothache.
Here’s the tale. Bad headache, sinus problem? Heart problem? Brain tumor? Bad enough to miss an eagerly awaited birthday party.
Pain. Pain. Up all night. Called my longterm dentist just as her office was closing for a holiday weekend. Said the dentist, «call Dr. Simon right away. Maybe he can fit you in.»
So I did. And Kirsty at the good Dr. Dan’s office got me in right away. Arrrgh, the pain, the pain… had to have my dearest hubster guide me into the city. Just to make sure I didn’t do anything stupid. Like jump the BART tracks, climb a bridge tower or… well, you get the picture.
Now I can say it was not my finest hour. I can’t say that trying to feign politeness from a dental chair is easy. Nor can I say that I remember much about the CNN broadcast which was available to distract me, the patient. I don’t remember the magazines, the book that I brought to read, or what the technician’s name was. But this I do remember.
Dr. Dan Simon exudes confidence, quality and professionalism. In other words (to quote another reviewer) he’s awesome.
Never want to see the man again. But if I do, I’m going to remember to say thank you. (I think I forgot these words as I exited from my last visit.)

I was referred to Dr. Simon for a root canal, him and his staff were great! Friendly patient and informative! The procedure was pretty fast and painless ! Thank you Dr. Simon and staff!

I am more like 4.5 stars, but this option doesn’t exist…
I was referred to Dr. Simon by my dentist, and I liked the convenience of having both offices in one building. They also coordinated the scheduling and shared my insurance information, so I was able to get the consultation and procedure done pretty quickly and at convenient times, which was much appreciated in light of my busy work schedule and dental emergency.
Dr. Simon did a superb job in re-​treating a root canal done more than 20 years ago. Cleaning someone else’s mess cannot be easy; not to mention the unusual «S» shaped canals he had to treat. Seeing the pre– and post-​procedure pictures, I knew he’s done a great job and appreciated his humor that lightened up my mood before and after.
The half star I didn’t give was because of the assistant. The procedure was one hour and very invasive, lots of pushing, pulling and drilling, and I even forgot to breathe at times. It didn’t even occur to her to perform regular suctions. I had to raise my hand to remind her and twice I almost choked on my saliva unable to talk with 2 – 3 instruments in my mouth… and she still didn’t get the clue. Not sure if she was in training, but she was assisted with the first x-​rays and did a poor job taking them after the procedure when my jaw was tender and sore… she kept pushing into my cheek and jaw to take pictures from different angles.
My tooth is healing well, and overall I am satisfied with the service and would recommend Dr. Simon to family and friends.

My experience is quite horrifying due to the fact that the same tooth he worked on had been done 2times without any resolution, he made everything as smooth as he could. Will def come back and service is recommended.
Oh and love the renovation!

Dr. Simon is somewhere between 4 and 5 stars (b/​c I am not sure anyone should EVER have 5 stars). A few years ago, he’d done 3 root canals for me. The quality of the work was superb, his office staff was very helpful, I would recommend him to anyone.

Dan Simon is brilliant. He was the one who discovered the «root» of all my problems with one of my molars… literally. I’ve had two root canals that failed on the one tooth because both previous dentists missed an extra root that was never filled and became the reservoir for a never ending abscess. He found and filled it but unfortunately because the infection had become so entrenched I had to go back for apical microsurgery to remove the tip of the problem root. If only I had seen him first.
As others have noted, he’s a really funny guy. I can understand why one reviewer might have not gotten along with him as he has a cynical, even sardonic, sense of humor (which is sometimes directed at you and sometimes at himself). But if you don’t take yourself too seriously and can laugh at horrors of dental work and at yourself, he’s definitely your guy and you’ll have the best time possible while he labors on what he likes to call the «rocks in your head.»
Also, his rates are very reasonable. He isn’t working out of one of those expensive fancy downtown offices. So you’re not paying over the top for the privilege of being in swanky surroundings. Plus he will always try to find ways to save you money, if you’re paying out of pocket.
PS: He’s the only dentist I’ve ever been to who ended up making jungle animal noises while musing that this might be an improvement on the muzac you usually have to endure in the dental office. It’s hard to laugh with your mouth full of instruments but I did.

Yet another 5 star review! I don’t know how this guy could be any better. Super friendly guy who can’t help but to crack wise and lighten the mood. VERY VERY good at making things as pain free as possible, and REALLY good at what he does.
Never heard a doctor tell me «I’m stoked about how good this came out» before!!! I’ve certainly never smiled that many times in a medical setting!!!
On top of that the staff is friendly, scheduling is pretty easy, and parking is convenient!
My experience was so good that I almost want more messed up teeth just so I can go back :) I feel so lucky that my regular dentist recommended Dr Simon. You can tell that they genuinely care about their patients and the well being of those patients.
If you’re in need of the services that are on offer here you’d be a damned fool not to goto Dr Simon.

Dr Simon certainly does have a «cheery, laid back personality» He tries to bring humor into the situation. More importantly, he is an excellent endodontist. I had a root canal that was in a difficult location. He spent an hour and a half on it and it came out perfect with no pain. His staff is friendly and very helpful also.

There is simply no comparison. I have had 3 root canals. Two from 2 other SF endodontists that were both horrendous in totally different ways. So when Dan Simon was recommended to me for my 3^rd, I hesitantly went in but was very pleased immediately with his calm, cheery and laid back personality. The experience was just completely different. He listened, worked efficiently (fast in a good way), and the outcome is phenomenal. The only real way to describe the difference between other endodontists and Dan Simon is like trying to compare cheap Easter chocolate from Walgreens with the finest Godiva.

I hope I never have to see Dr. Dan Simon again.
Let me rephrase that: I hope I never have to see Dr. Dan Simon again from the chair. I don’t want any more root canals (I think he’s done three for me.) On the other hand, I would be happy to see Dr. Dan Simon again if it was in a bar after work. I’ve been to lots of oral surgeons (I think I have ten or twelve root canals and three extractions) and Dr. Simon is the best of them, along with Dr. Scharf who did my most recent extractions. It’s as relaxing an experience as you can have with a bunch of hands and tools in your mouth, the work looks excellent on the x-​ray, he tells you what’s going on, and nothing has needed to be re-​done.
And he’s funny. Really funny. If I was sitting in a comedy club, I’d be laughing and cheering. Instead, I’m going «ummflg…fnee».
The office staff is great. The location is great for me, I can walk there in fifteen minutes. And if I wasn’t having a root canal, I would really enjoy being there.

The whole staff and Dr. Simon are awesome! With the obvious good vibe in there you can tell the dynamics in the office is very team oriented. Dr. Simon is personable, down to earth but professional and he is great at what he does. I highly recommend them all :)

Sure his office is in a good location– not far from me, lots of free parking, the staff is friendly and nice and they are all awesomely cute. But the main thing that seals the deal is that Simon knows what he is doing so all the rest is gravy (also like other reviewer, I am also an 80’s fan).
Feeling like someone really knows their stuff really helps you relax and not be a complete spazz, which I can be, and I had to have something relatively complicated done (apicoectomy) in 2010 and no problems and total relief so far– when someone relieves you of off/​on again pain you have had for years, believe it you are grateful and it is so worth it. If it is something he doesn’t do or can have a ‘regular dentist’ do he will tell you.
I was so afraid to be awake for the apico since I usually elect to get knocked out for any kind of oral surgery (my reg extraction guy doesn’t do apicos, see my other reviews), but he numbed me up, which wasn’t that big a deal, and it didn’t take forever, but best of all… he was precise and did it right ! He’s also done other more routine stuff for me and no problems, as well as worked on family members and they were happy with his work also.- he seems to make a special effort with his microscope or whatever that thing is to make sure he ‘gets it all’ and one can tell he wants to do everything to an exacting standard, which is something I appreciate in any kind of dentist/​endodontist/​surgeon.

Dr. Simon is wonderful! I tend to be more scared than most people when I get dental work, but he went right to work at putting me at ease. He has a great attitude and did a terrific job. There was no pain, and the work was done quickly. Both he and the office staff were friendly, helpful, and informative. Absolutely the best!

Just had my root canal today. I was referred by my dentist to Dr. Simon. I was dreading it. heard horror stories etc. It was not that bad after all. the worst part is getting the Novocain shots, but once that was over there was NO PAIN during the procedure. He is a personable guy and explained everything. If you need a root canal he is DA MAN.

Dr. Simon is a friendly, patient, knowledgeable guy. He thoroughly explains what he’s going to do and what your options are, so I never leave feeling uninformed about the procedure I need or might need. Heidi, the woman who runs the reception is also very friendly. The prices are average, not over-​inflated for oral surgery, and of course i’d rather spend the money somewhere else, but like everyone else I HATE going to the Dentist, and Dr. Simon tries to make it as pleasant as possible. And listening to alternative hits of the 80’s rather than the 80’s stuff like the Pointer Sisters and Huey Lewis and the News makes the trip more bearable too! Also, I don’t have insurance, which I told them upfront, and they were willing to work with me. Hopefully I wont need more work, but if I do, I know here i’m in good hands.
