Don’t let the cute cozy store front receive you. This place manages to hold a massive amount of stuff on the inside. Having moved recently to the city and requiring some hardware (screws, washers) for some home repairs, this place had almost EVERYTHING that I needed.
You can even call their customer support and let you know if they have in stock the items you need. There’s even a pretty cool option to just text them for support so you don’t have to look like a complete fool when being asked follow up questions. Switch to chrome Google the answer and respond back with details.

Always a great place to pick up what you need for household fixes. Had many keys made here as well and always had a good experience with the staff.
Sometime the wait can be a little long, but it’s totally worth the convenience. Also they are packed with cool stuff and things I never knew you could still buy. See the light bulb selection and random kitchenware downstairs. Also plenty of the hardware items you’d expect; tools, power stools, doors, locks, paint, cement, plumbing, electrical…

Great customer service! Attentive and friendly. Went in with a dead garage door opener. The gentleman opened it up and put batteries in for me.
Out of towner new to San Francisco and they showed great hospitality and service.

This store has just about anything you might need. There is plenty of helpful staff looking to answer your questions so be sure to let them know what you’re looking for cuz chances are, you might not find it on your own. Defintiely a go to for me.

I had stopped at Lowe’s somewhere south of the city trying to find a place that cold duplicate a set of keys for me. Drove my car all the way there (inconvenient), took my keys in — got them duplicated. Get all the way to the Mission District only to find out that they keys were a total flop (no good whatsoever).
I was a bit worried about trying to find a place to duplicate keys — in a rush — on a Sunday — in the city. But Cole-​Fox Hardware had my back. They were quick, helpful, and they keys WORKED.
Would definitely return here for hardware needs.

When you walk into a hardware store in a rush to get some keys cut and come out feeling better about the world, noticing birds chirping, the wind in your hair, and the blue of the sky. That is the Cole-​Fox Hardware experience.
It really was pleasant. The employees were so warm and friendly; I felt like I was living in a small quaint town where everyone at the local store knows who you are, and is probably going to ask about your mom. There is an adorable trail of keys painted on the floor leading you to the key cutting area in the back. I honestly wish I had more time, because they had a huge selection, …plus I really I just wanted soak up the refreshing, neighborly vibes.

Are you a dumbfuck renter like me who who did something stupid to your apartment that slightly damaged it? Specifically doing something you were explicitly told not to do when signing your lease? If so, this review will settle down that nausea and cure your sweaty armpits as you figure out how in the hell you are going to save your security deposit.
It all started 3 years ago when I bought some hooks from Target that stick to the wall with adhesive. Landlords hate that shit, but then again, they hate everything. So I figured if it’s made for a wall, it can’t be bad for it, right? Wrong. So wrong.
Took off the wall hook one day while redecorating, and a 2X2 inch chunk of wall decided to go with it. No worries though, I’ve watched about 10,000 hours of HGTV so clearly I am an expert in self home repair. So I enlist my boyfriend to patch up the wall with spackle. Which actually worked pretty well, aside from the fact that the spackle white did not match my wall white.
Thanks a lot Property Brothers, so now I have to re-​paint an entire wall? Or even my whole fucking room? I can’t even paint my toenails. Not only that, but I have to match ONE shade of white amongst what is literally billions. I mean, I checked out paint swatches and almost screamed when I saw how many swatches there were — how is that even possible? Who thought this was ever a good idea? Probably the same asshole who designed the first high heels.
Anyways, an extremely kind associate smelled my fear and asked me more questions about why I was looking for paint. I sheepishly explained I made a hole in the wall and fixed it with spackle, but that only made another problem for me. They told me they had paint matching software that was incredibly accurate. Jesus Christ, am I in the year 2050 or are Cole-​Fox associates wizards?
They are fucking wizards. I don’t think I ever imagined being able to spot paint a room in my lifetime without having the original paint bucket.
The best part is, I only spent $ 40. You always hear about how expensive local shops are but this place has great deals. I even went over-​kill with the things I bought (which they actually encouraged me against) and would have been fine spending half the amount of money. Either way, $ 40 is chump change compared to a $ 1000 + security deposit.
Everyone was also super sweet, helpful, and honest. Never felt like someone was hiding a snicker because I didn’t know what the hell they meant when they asked what my wall’s sheen was. And I was never pressured to buy something stupid/​useless even though I clearly wouldn’t have known any better. They are the nicest wizards ever.

This place has basically anything one would want except larger pieces of wood or plants. I’ve bought screws, wiring, plumbing supplies, glue, paint, canning equipment from this place over the years. Great location near Powell BART that allows me to grab and go on the way home from work. Wonderfully helpful people there (as in all Cole-​Fox locations) and popcorn in the back for a quarter.

I’m just going to have to pile on the five-​star ratings. I always leave here feeling like the thing that I thought was the «big problem» and was afraid of tacking at home was nothing more than some expert advice away, thanks so much to the crew here at Cole-​Fox.
They are just the best people around and always remind me that in this AMZN (
) world we live in, this experience will never be matched. No diss on getting info and hardware online, but man, these people make it so real, so human, and most importantly, make it all appear so easy to do. They have become my de facto first stop for any at-​home job.

Walked into the store today to get some keys cut and was hoping to see Alice and that smile of hers. When I got to the back and asked for her I was told by Joseph that yesterday 7÷15÷15 was her last day and that she retired.
Although I was sadden by the news, I am very happy that after 32 years of service to all of us she is off doing something else that she enjoys other than being the rock of this incredible little store that has it all.
Now it’s in the hands of Bill, Frank and the rest of the awesome staff members that work here. Cheers Alice!

Hands down the best customer service you could ask for AND receive at a hardware store!
The employees care about your need, they think outside the box. And get this: when they see you, they APPROACH you instead of running in the opposite direction like those who wear blue or orange vests!
I was in the other day, and the incredible rep remembered my NAME!
We all love to hear our own name, but when it’s from a retail store that you visit often, but not regularly, it’s incredibly impressive!
This review is LONG over due! So thank you Cole Fox for your exemplary customer service! You could charge twice what the big box stores do & I’d still come in! (but please don’t, though!)

For most city-​dwellers this is all you need. I just walked in, asked the first person I saw for Teflon tape, and he pointed me downstairs, turn left, 3^rd aisle, 3^rd shelf on left. Easy. I walk downstairs, and the lady at the bottom says «teflon tape? that way» (points). I walk down the aisle she pointed, and this 3^rd dude pops up and says «what type of teflon tape, gas, hvac, water?» and to that i respond «damn, you guys are good.»
I get the $ 1.49 roll that I’m looking for, and go up and pay. I’m still amazed, that really if all businesses treated their customers with this type of fast service, then this world would be insanely awesome.
Props to you guys.

Convenient, friendly and knowledgeable service and they carry Benjamin Moore paint, including Aura (which is the only way to go! No fumes, and best coverage of any paint I’ve ever used).
And they have a great inventory, managed to get everything on my shopping list which is generally not true when I go to a smaller hardware store. I’ll be back for sure.

I was walking to Target and remembered I needed to get some picture frame hooks and decided to hop in here while I walked by. I’m so glad I did! This place has great stuff and the prices were very similar to Target. I ended up getting a cute retro clock that I had seen online at another retailer and also some cute housewares stuff. I found myself walking all the aisles downstairs just to see what cool stuff they had. The staff was super friendly too– don’t be afraid to ask for help– they have a lot of stuff and it can be overwhelming.

I just had a mail key copied here for $ 2. It was quite a problematic key and several other shops had tried and failed. But the Asian guy here was quite experienced and was able to manually file the duplicate to the right thickness. Not a simple task, it seemed.
So glad I didn’t have to go hunting for some crazy specialty key store outside the city!

All of the Cole Fox’s are terrific, but I tend to shop at this one because it’s close by. I’ve been a customer since 2001 and have always had good experiences.
Today, I wanted to acknowledge a gentleman named Frank, who I must say is a key/​lock expert. Not only did he spend a lot of time solving a key mystery for me, he educated me on the intricacies of key making. His dry sense of humor kept me chuckling throughout the visit and I left feeling like a happier human being.
The HR department needs a big, giant thank you for cultivating a team like the one on 4^th Street. They’re all nice and helpful, plus you can’t help laughing at the quirky jokes they toss back and forth through their ear pieces.

This has been my local hardware store for almost 10 years, and all of my little projects have required a visit here, from buying paint, installing custom shelving from scratch, or some little things to secure a hook to dry wall or kill some moths or replace a weird light bulb. Always, there was someone knowledgeable that gave me advice on what to buy and how to use it. They’re so helpful that I’m sometimes amazed how much knowledge there is under one roof.
I once was getting advice on red climbing rope versus red flat nylon straps with a store employee, and he was completely unfazed when, as he was describing comparative rope features for rigging/​climbing, I told him that I was actually building some bed restraints for a kinky gal I was dating. Without batting an eyelash, he smoothly switches gears and analyzes the options based on this new information («The straps will cut into skin, the rope will be softer…»). Ha. I love this place.
They also have power tool rentals, can duplicate keys for you, custom cut raw materials to your specifications, and have regular household items, like buckets, bug spray, cleaning supplies, etc.

Glad I found this place! I have only bought mason jars and window screens here but they store is organized and they have great sales. The sales associates are always nice and helpful! They have different sized mason jars and nice glass bottles that are twice the price at The Container Store.

T H O U G H T S: When you live in a building from 1906, removable screens are a necessity. They have window screens in a variety of sizes to accommodate your needs. Prices for them range from $ 9.99-$ 23.99. Take measurements! This shop is deceptively large with so many home goods tucked away in the crevices, look around you! If you are outfitting a shop, they also have cash boxes, signs, and bathroom door stickers. I wish I had a store to put a toilet sign!
