I didn’t book nor pay for this hotel, so I’m keeping in mind that I lost no money here. 1 Star
This hotel isn’t horrible, but I’d never stay here again or recommend it. There is no air, the beds are pretty firm and the bathrooms are itty bitty.

Stayed at this hotel for the Saturday and Sunday for MDW. At first I was a little worried about this place. But boy were those fears unfounded, once we got there we were greeted by friendly staff, one staffer that did our check-​in I believe her name is Sabrina was amazing. She explained all the cool points to see in the city and most importantly where is the parking. I highly recommend this hotel. Great rooms you get to hear the sounds of the city union square park is right there.

I enjoyed my stay at the Chancellor Hotel. The room was quiet and very comfortable.

Pros:
— Good location for use of public transit, with a CVS just around the corner.
— Friendly staff, including the cleaning staff.
— 5% coupon for hotel breakfast received when checking in.
— Soft towels
— Courtesy apples daily, at the bowl sitting on the front desk. Also, found courtesy self-​serve popcorn was out on a Sunday.
Cons:
— Our automatic bathroom fan was not automatic, despite the automatic setting option. To access the «on» switch, located inside the shower; I had to stand on the ledge of the tub, brace myself against the shower wall and reach up to toggle the switch on. Repeat, to turn off. (This technique may not be required for those standing 6′ or taller.)
— Discovered that our single 8^th floor, street facing window allowed in a significant amount of street level noise (trolley bells, bagpipe, drum kit, jack hammer). An open window was necessary, as the historic hotel is not equipped with air conditioning.
— The hotel bed mattress size was described as a queen but seemed closer to a full in dimensions, which may only be an issue if there is more than one guest is using the room.
Tips:
— Have the classic eggs Benedict at the hotel. It comes with hash browns and both are tasty. Coffee is just okay.
— Book a room above the 8^th floor and not facing the main drag, if possible. Or bring your own ear plugs.
— Discovered on the 2^nd day, that the pin used to confine the opening width of the window to a few inches, is actually removeable (no special tools required) to allow for more air flow.
— Heed the «step up» sticker placed on the 1& ½″ inch step into the bathroom. Or trip atleast once, and remember forever.
— Acquire your tp before sitting down on the toilet or access the tp behind and above your left shoulder (while seated).
Notes:
A hotel upgrade was in progress during our stay. Perhaps those visiting later will experience less worn and more user friendly facilities.

My husband planned a weekend getaway in Union Square to celebrate my birthday & anniversary. The hotel gave us a complimentary bottle of champagne to help us celebrate!
Love how there’s a menu of pillows you can choose from for your comfort level.
We stayed on the 13^th floor with a view of union square. The only thing I didn’t like about the hotel was the $ 45 valet parking and no a/​c. There’s a ceiling fan in the room but I still felt hot during the night. Overall stay was decent. The mall is fairly close and restaurants were all walking distance from the hotel.

We drove for about 5 minutes and found street parking on a Saturday night around 9 PM 2 blocks from the hotel.
The hotel is really nice, has a charm. The stairs to go upstairs are quite narrow. The room was also very small, or maybe the queen/​king sized bed made it look smaller? Either way, nice hotel. Not sure if the price is worth it since we had stopped by to meet friends.

My boyfriend and I stayed to see a concert in the area, so this was a nice choice. The staff was extremely friendly and knew who we we were seeing and were excited for us to go! Our room was cozy but comfortable, perfect for two people, along with the witty pillow menu (which worked nicely for us), William the duck in the bathroom, and HBO. Happy hour downstairs was 4.50 a drink, and we also received a 2 for 1 drink coupon. After coming back from the concert, we were surprised to a complimentary bottle of champagne in our room with turn down service. I have no complaints at all. Great price, great location, great staff, great experience.

Stayed here for two nights after a horrifying check-​in at another SF hotel not-​to-​be-​named. Perfect location, clean but small room, friendly staff, fairly affordable. Would stay here again.

This hotel is a wonderful deal! It’s so close to Union Square that you can see Macy’s through the front window and the cable cars go right by. The staff is friendly and helpful. The building has those classic architectural details that are really nice, and they have great in-​room extras (specialty pillows, a candy jar, an umbrella for use during the trip, and great toiletries). It was also significantly cheaper. I’d recommend it to anyone!

Stayed here for 5 nights for a conference in SF. Conveniently located near Union Square. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. They make fresh cookies and popcorn for you in the morning. The hotel rooms are kept clean. The price is actually good for SF, specially since it’s located in a nice part of town.

Located steps from Union square, the Chancellor is a charming historic hotel with lots to offer travellers. The rooms are fairly small, but arranged in a sensible way to allow easy movement. Similarly the bathrooms are small but still manage to fit standard tubs, and have standard other amenities. Interestingly, there was also a walk-​in closet in my room, which most travellers would not really need, but provided the opportunity for me to put the baby crib in there and not need to walk on eggshells every evening after 7pm. Persons in wheelchairs should beware that the room doors and bathroom doors are very narrow, and there was a small step up into the bathroom for my room. The rooms facing the rear are very quite, but those facing the square have a lot of noise due to construction etc in the daytime (and bright morning sun, just FYI). I enjoyed local wine at the bar, charged to my room. For ease. And I enjoyed the free fruit, popcorn, flavored water, coffee and tea in the lobby. Staff was polite and accommodating but not syrupy, which is perfect for me.

We worked with Joanna when there was a error that occurred with our reservations. She was extremely understanding and polite during the conversation and was able to correct the situation and keep our rate low. We are really looking forward to our trip in December.

Superb location
literally across the street from Union Square on the Powell Street cable line, walking distance to all relevant points of interest. Cable car stop right in front to Fisherman’s wharf.

Good place to stay. Very reasonably priced and in the heart of Union Square, near the entrance to Chinatown. Old place, but clean and well-​appointed. You can hear the beat of the city at night, including a street musician blowing his horn. It was great. Service was very nice.

Located walking distance to shops, restaurants, and all transportation. Complimentary fruit and ice water in lobby. The front desk and concierge are always friendly, knowledgable, and eager to help!
There’s a cool bar next to the lobby and happy hour nightly!
Very good breakfasts are available in their own restaurant, but Sears Restaurant (right next door) does a better breakfast, and Sears has a nice dinner menu as well.

This hotel has no AC! (just a heads up)
My boyfriend and I visited SF this weekend for a mini vacation and we had a great time. This hotel is located perfectly in the center of the city. It is walking distance to chinatown and financial district. You walk down the street and you will be at the mall and lots of shopping. There’s so many wonderful restaurants and bars around you. My boyfriend and I basically just walked every where this weekend with no issues at all. We did take the bart to get to ferry building marketplace. We also had to take lyft from pier 39 back to the hotel but that was less than 15 dollars!
It was a very hot weekend in SF so it was a bit unbearable to stay in the room during the day with just the window and a ceiling fan. But at night it cools down a lot so it wasn’t really a big issue. The hotel is very historic but it doesn’t have a dirty and old vibe to it. Everything was very clean and the staff was always so helpful.
There’s always iced water, cookies, and coffee/​tea in the lobby for the guest. There’s happy hour at the bar too and the price is VERY REASONABLE!
I really don’t have anything to complain about.
Parking: Valet = $ 45 a night

We loved staying here. The bed is so comfortable, their goose down pillow top bed and pillows made all the difference! The hotel is very well maintained and has its own charm; very close to everything in Union Square! The staff is pleasant and helpful. Checking in and out was a breeze. They do have free wi-​fi, ceiling fan in the room, a fridge, flat screen TV and I would definitely stay here again. BART is just a few blocks away!

We stayed here at the recommendation of family who stayed there many years ago. The hotel exceeded my expectations based on knowing it was an older hotel and Unilocal reviews. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others. All but one of the staff went above and beyond for us.
Very convenient location for much lower than other hotels in the area. We drove in from Napa and got rid of our rental car once we got to the city (on Post St) and we took the BART to the airport. Very convenient.

I’m extremely late on this review. I stayed here on Halloween Weekend last year, and arrived Halloween day which was the day of the Giants Parade. The parking was 20 a night and it’s fine to leave your car in the lot because the Bart station is a nice walk away and it is definitely a lovely area. I’m from LA and I wish we had a place as nice as Union Square.
PROS:
–Reserved this place literally the night before and got a pretty good price (350 for two nights).
–EXCELLENT Customer Service. The gentleman with the flesh colored plugs (or ear gauges) was extremely helpful in guiding us on the fun times that were happening Halloween Night and helping us throughout the weekend.
–The Hotel is location is PERFECT.
–The room is a perfect size for a couple who wants to get away.
–Great restaurants/​stores all around and the mall food court is nuts, and Rasputin Records!
–RUBBER DUCK IS LEGIT.
–Bart stations/​Buses/​Trolleys all right outside.
–THAT PILLOW MENU THO.
CONS:
–NONE. the only thing is that there was a $ 1,000 fine if you overflow the tub. I assume this is because it is a very old building, which is perfectly understandable.
WILL GO HERE FOR EVERY SF TRIP.

We enjoyed our stay here. The hotel is very well maintained and kept most of its historical charm. It is very close to main public transit lines, which is a big plus.
Additionally, the restaurant was quite tasty. Staff was very pleasant. Definitely would stay here again.

Wonderful location! That is the best part of this hotel! It is a charming older hotel but still very clean. Nothing fancy but the price you pay for the location is everything. So affordable! Rooms (bathroom, bed, closet, carpet, desk) were clean. No mold, dust or bed bugs. And room service is optional everyday. Huge plus! Will definitely return next time in San Francisco!

After a night on the town in San Francisco, I will often stay at a hotel if I can get a good price. I was at some Holiday parties last night, so I stayed at the Chancellor Hotel.
I have walked by this place hundreds of times, and have never been inside. I do know that in the 50s, 60s and 70s it was where my grandparents would stay any time they went to San Francisco. Location is excellent, just steps from Union Square.
I found the front staff and the bar staff to be helpful and engaged. My room was small but clean. Only two elevators for the place, and during «rush hour» last night I did have to wait about five minutes for my elevator to arrive to my floor.
I paid $ 149 for my room, which I booked on Expedia. This was an excellent deal as many of the big chain hotels in the area were charging $ 300+ that evening.
I’ll be back!

The Chancellor straddles a very fine line between old-​fashioned and just plain old. It’s a charming place though, and the friendly staff and great location cover up some of it’s rougher edges.
Our room was a bit odd, but nice over all. It’s all a bit «Mad Men» as far as decoration was concerned. The room was really cosy though, and a great place to recharge the batteries.
I wouldn’t write home about the facilities, but you didn’t come to San Francisco to stay in your hotel, did you?

Though at times it’s all about who you know, sometimes it’s all about location.
I made a reservation for 2 nights for my mother and I the week of Thanksgiving. We wanted to stay near Union Square to do some shopping and sight-​seeing prior to staying at my brother’s apartment.
CHARMED:
The hotel is QUITECLOSE to Union Square restaurants and shopping, and a mere 5 minute walk from Union Square Park. Comprised of just 15 floors, the hotel has a small but quaint lobby, and is served by 2 not-​so-​spacious (small!) elevators.
DOWNTON ABBEY:
All the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. The check-​in process was quick and efficient thanks to the very competent and polite girl at the front desk. Other staff we came into contact, which includes maids, maintenance, and the bellhop, greeted us warmly.
A ROOM WITH A VIEW:
Although the actual «view» was of the buildings of the SF Skyline, at least there was somewhat of a view. The room, truth be told, was cozy but slightly smaller than I expected. I booked the room thru
, and I was very THANKFUL my preference of 2 twin beds was accommodated. Room amenities included:
ceiling fan
mini-​fridge
alarm clock
flat screen tv
in-​room safe (located in the closet)
As stated on the hotel website
guest rooms are not equipped with air-​conditioning. Initially I had my doubts about this absent feature, but the cool weather of SF naturally took the place of AC. The room was fairly clean, but the bathroom seemed a bit outdated and could use a facelift. Also, there is a warning posted that the tub should not be left unattended as there is a risk that it may overflow.
Lastly, there is an abundance of furniture in the room that is unnecessary. In fact, the extra furniture makes the room seem cluttered. I felt the 2 chairs, table, and lamp situated near the window was not needed. In fact, the oversized lampshade hindered the curtains from closing properly.
NO RESERVATIONS:
There is a restaurant, Luques, located just off of the lobby near the bar. It’s open daily for breakfast and lunch from 7am to 230pm. My mother and I took advantage of the on-​site restaurant and chose to eat breakfast once during our stay.
BOTTOM LINE: I feel the best quality of this hotel is its proximity and location to Union Square. Other positive aspects of our stay included the friendly staff and decent room. I wouldn’t rule out making another reservation at this hotel.
