Specialties
I am an Educational Therapist Specializing in Mathematics. I am very experienced in helping students with Learning Disabilities master math. I work with students from 4th grade through Calculus and Statistics. I employ various math manipulatives, games, puzzles and software to help students really understand math concepts so that math is no longer a meaningless routine of memorizing steps and instead leads to Eureka moments of real understanding.
History
Established in 1986.
After tutoring on a part-time basis for several years, I learned about the Educational Therapy program at San Francisco State University and earned their Certificate in Ed Therapy which provided the basic training for my work with students with learning differences. I furthered my education by receiving additional training from Mary Laycock and in Math Special Education from Joan McNichols, MS. I have worked with students from nearly every elementary, middle, and high school in San Francisco and many other Bay Area schools for the past 26 years. I have often consulted with schools and teachers on best teaching practices for students with learning disabilities and have advocated on behalf of my students so that they may be allowed appropriate accommodations by their schools. As a former Child Psychotherapist I have the training and the skill to deal with students with a variety of emotional issues as well as learning issues.
Meet the Business Owner
Bill D.
Business Owner
I am a San Francisco native who attended local schools and colleges. For my first career I was a Child Psychotherapist. I left this field because of the glut of colleagues in that field and my desire to earn more than the roughly minimum wage salary that local mental health agencies were paying for child therapists. I have always enjoyed children and wanted to continue to work with kids, so I made a horizontal career move into the field of Educational Therapy 26 years ago. Partly because I had tutored math on and off since my teen years and partly because of the lack of good math learning specialists in San Francisco, I have specialized in teaching math to students with learning differences. I also work with students who aren’t hampered by a learning difference but who want to experience more confidence and success in their math classes. I try to make the sessions as fun as possible by frequently using humor to lighten our work together.
