I really regret not writing a review of this place while it was open. Andrew had a top-notch joint and I always brought people here when they came to visit. The food was great, the prices were reasonable, the waitstaff was friendly, and the music was good. Not your typical SF restaurant by a long shot. Such fond memories. Last time I was there my dad tried hitting on a 24 yo kiwi(NZ) chick. She just kept reading her book, amidst the loud jazz. Way to go old man. But alas, it has become something NB has been lacking for so long, a strip club. This year I guess I’ll bring grandma to eat jambalaya off Barbie’s rack. At least the old man should have an easier time getting some play.

Sadly this place is going bye bye. There are many reasons why I have grown to love this place(and not because our meal was comped!). Although they denied me and my party of 12 people because of their liquor license(most of my guests were 20 years old) and had basically ruined the evening so that we were forced to find another restaurant that would quickly accomodate all of us on that Saturday night. Steps of Rome came to the rescue and was probably more of a filthier place to celebrate my 21st, haha. But days later the manager from Jaeger’s calls me and apologizes, sends me a gift certificate and a card promising a «special evening». Stumbling upon the news of their recent departure from SF, I quickly made reservations for my parents and I since it was their wedding anniversary. And yess. I can’t miss the opportunity for free food! And wow… we were blown away. My mouth had never felt so hot from sultry foods. the orgy of oysters and jambalaya and cornbread intermingling in my mouth. So sad to see New Orleans cuisine leave the bay. :(For appetizers we ordered: Oysters Bleu Cheese, Creole Gumbo. And for our dishes: Chef’s Jambalaya, Chef’s Soulful New Orleans B.B.Q., Softshell crab. Dessert: Fresh fruit beignets and Crème brûlée. Their cornbread was so tasty! And their speciatly drinks were laced with enough 151 to make any dinner with the parents a quite memorable(regrettable) one. :) Last day to get yourself a hearty meal: June 30! Even if you don’t like the food, you can stare at the walls and at all the PRETTYBOOBIES, especially the ones that light up, hehe.

We wanted to try this place out before it closes next Fri 6÷29÷07. I’ve walked by here a bunch of times but never thought to stop by. They had a live jazz band playing when we went in. We met up with our friend who was sitting at the bar enjoying some drinks and he was watching the Giants on TV and listening to the music. Then we sat down at a table close by so we could talk, eat, and still hear the music. Food is pretty good here. After ordering the waiter brought out some bread and some garlic/spiced butter. Love the butter, bread was average. When we finished it, he brought another basket, but this time he added sweet potato cornbread w/jalapeño that was really tasty. We ordered: gumbo $ 7-pretty good pulled pork entrée comes w/gumbo, potato salad, coleslaw for $ 19-pretty tasty stuff. Chef jambalaya(seafood) $ 19 –hubby liked it. Friend got a po boy oyster sandwich $ 14-he didn’t like it at all. anchor steam bottle bear $ 5.5 Subtotal $ 64.50 tax $ 5.49 = $ 69.99 before tip. Separate men/women bathroom. Women’s 2 stalls/2 sinks.

Unfortunatley, our dear friend Andrew is closing up is House of Seafood & Jazz. The old Condor space is beyond beautiful, his food was just fine for what he was doing. If it weren’t for the AH that come through our Broadway corridor, and cause a bunch of BS, maybe business owners would not get fed up and want to leave, not to mention the exorbanant amount of increased rent. I wish Andrew the best and lots of sucess back home ! Thanks for the good times Jaeger !!!

I KNOW my ETOH!!! Professional drinker for years. They make the WORST mojito in da world!!! It tasted like sugar water with no alcohol. When we asked the bartender if perhaps he forgot to add the alcohol(since he seemed«busy», taking 15 minutes to get our order with only 2 – 3 people ordering in front of us), he said he did. We kind of hinted to give us a courtesy shot into our glass, he said he couldn’t. We proceeded to leave our unfinished drink and left with disgust. I rather drink water…

I took my visiting parents there last night, and was actually quite dissappointed. My rating is not for the food but for the service. Our waiter was crap. When our appetizers arrived, we were given 3 of 4, and the waiter walked off… to get the 4th you would think… so we all sat there looking at our food while my mother told us all to start and not wait for her(bless her). We insisted we would wait… and wait… and wait. I managed to grab a waiter(not our waiter, he was off taking someone elses order) and ask where the other appetizer was. They went away, and in a couple of minutes brought back the appetiser. No apology… The chef did come out a minute later to apologise though which was good form. We hardly saw our waiter again. When we did he didn’t acknowledge the late appetizer. That was left to the waiter… The food was pretty good, although my father and I both tasted a bad clam in our Jambalaya(and worried all night if it was going to come and get us later. luckily not). Their cornbread is delicious. The crab cakes are good too. When I asked for the check, our waiter gave me the wrong one and walked off. I sat their for a few minutes trying to find him and tell him but he was hard to find. When he did come and I told him we had the wrong check… no apology, just«ok» then he went to get our check. When he came back I didn’t quite catch what he said, but there was some kind of sarcastic comment and no smile. I gave him a pretty bad tip in return for his pretty bad service. On the Ambience… the music was OK, the plasma screen TV’s on the wall do not add to the ambience at all, and generally, this seems like a bit of a crappy tourist trap. I realised after we left and walked down Columbus to Toscas that I had actually taken us to the wrong restaurant after all. I had intended to take them to Jazz at Pearls which looked much nicer. Oh well, next time…

Nice change from the old Condor. Went here with two of my Southern pals, one from NOLA who was pretty sure he was going to hate it, but turns out Jaeger’s is a mini chain down there, so he knew he would be ok. The food is quite pricey for what you get, but it’s delicious. We had the crab cakes, grilled artichoke, shrimp roumalade & jambalaya. The jambalaya was different than any other kind I’ve ever had, not bad, just different and not all that ‘authentic’. There are a lot of $ 12 cocktails, which I do not buy, beings how I’m not a tourist and they aren’t coming in any ‘souvenir glass’. We stuck to beer, bottled. The best part of the experience was sitting in the booth right up front, next to the piano and band. They had a great bluesy jazz band that really rocked it out. They were clearly having fun & we were bouncing around in our seat. The service is really good and the place is massive, sort of shabby chic. Like a brothel that’s been neglected.

The food is a solid 3. It didn’t have me stepping down memory lane of my insane, bead throwing nights spent on Bourbon Street or my days spent trying to channel the Voodoo Priestess, Queen Marie Laveau prior to Katrina. I was totally hyped to visit this place for some authentic, cajun cuisine. Unfortunately, I left slightly disappointed with the fare. My boyfriend chose to have the gumbo and I opted for the sweet, barbeque ½ chicken. In the middle of the meal, we switched plates and although, spicy, the gumbo lacked the normal flavors that I’ve come to associate with great New Orlean’s gumbo. It had the kick, but the andouille sausage was pretty flavorless. The beignets were overly dry and after 2 bites, I felt completely ambivalent. I understand that Andrew Jaeger is a notable Cajun chef, but I just wasn’t feelin’ the New Orlean’s cooking here. The music on the other hand, rocked and I had a blast listening to the live Jazz. It definitely added flavor where the food was lacking.

I was walking around northbeach one night and got a flyer from here which I did not pay much attention to. Then one of my cousins ate there and said this is the new spot… Were always looking for the new spot to eat at in the city. After leaving that crappy Steps of Rome, we decided to go somewhere else — House of Seafood and Jazz. To my surprise, this place which used to be a strip club became an amazing joint. Kudos to the owners for turning it around but keeping parts of the old Condor Gentleman’s club legacy. The music and the ambience were outstanding. They had great service, the menu was averagely priced and the food was scrumptious. Serving cajun style cuisine, this is a great way to break the monotony of Italian restaurants in that vicinity. I would definitely go back there again. Next time I might be brave enough to try some delicacies like turtle soup of alligator.

i can only comment on the bar. i didn’t have to pay the cover so that was good. also, it was nice to hear a jazz band while getting the night started. i was there with a huge group and the common complaint was that getting drinks took forever. my friend just ordered multiple drinks at once to avoid the bar so we were double or triple fisting. very classy looking, i’m sure. i tried a raspberry wheat beer which was pretty good. i also had a lemon drop which was not my thing. i don’t like sweet drinks so i’m probably not the best judge for that. maybe i’ll try the food next time.

The Chef is super cool. Did you see the knives slung next to his hip how raw is that! The waitress a na’wlins girl with a tat on her collar bone, really how naw’lins… is that! The gumbo was unexpectedly good, the alligator piquant was spectacular honestly. The beignets could have been better a bit too smooshy. Man. Man … Man though I was full as hell. I seriously was in a food coma. It was really pleasant looking out onto columbus street and pretending you’re in the quarter although your in N. Beach(that’s a weird sensation honestly) so try it out if you feel like some cajun and creole food one night.

Tough one. Andrew used to have a place right on Bourbon St. and now only has this jazz hole in Strip town Nobe. Upon recommendation, I set up a 4 seat birthday dinner on a Friday night for an out of town friend. The atmosphere was upbeat and friendly. The backroom has tele’s that project the live band in the front.(The front bar area is loud-make sure you get the back). The luke warm entrees that came out was for sure sitting under heat lamps no question about it. The restaurant wasn’t that busy, but it was obvious that the attention for the evening was to a large 12 top in the corner. Regardless, upon bringing it to Andrew’s attention, he was happy to send flowers and take care of our birthday desserts. Smiles across the table. THEBEST Beignet’s I’ve had in a long time. I recommend Andrew’s for a night cap of jazzanova, stiff drinks, and hot dessert.

I had a very disappointing evening at this restaurant last night. Quite frankly, I’d rather see an 80 year old Carol Doda relive her glory days before coming here again. First off, our waiter appeared to be extrememly busy which was funny because there was no one in the restaurant. We ordered a bottle of malbec, and it took three tries for him to actually bring us the bottle we ordered. Once he did bring it, he couldn’t open the damn thing and broke the cork off in the wine! He tried to play it off like it’s ok, but we obviously sent him scurrying back for another. Meanwhile the turtle soup and gumbo we ordered were both lukewarm at best. I considered sending it back, but those of you who have seen Fight Club will understand why I didn’t. Equally as unimpressive was their selection of hot sauce(they only had Tabisco). The soup was not so good and the shrimps in the gumbo were soft and slimy. The crab cakes were decent for California and were served at their proper temperature. We ordered the seafood platter for dinner and that was not bad either, but again the waiter dropped the ball, bringing only one crab cracker, and one measly napkin for eating messy crab and lobster. It took about ten minutes for our guy to bring us the extra napkins and utensils. The band was decent, and the resident cougars seemed to enjoy themselves. Overall I would not reccomend this place if you want authentic Cajun Cuisine. I’d give the food 2 out of 5 stars, and the service –5 stars — it was atrocious.

Andrew Jaeger’s House of Seafood & Jazz… One of my dearest girlfriends came to visit from Shreveport, Louisiana, and instructed me, not suggest, we go here. She dined in the one in New Orleans, very recently(after Katrina) and loved the Creole food, even in THE Creole capital! So the«instruction» paid off. We happened in on a Monday night(not knowing it had the Seafood special)…the host seemed a little put off that we did not have reservations, but it was EMPTY. He sat us, and explained that Monday’s are the 5 course seafood special night, great! I am a pescatarian after all! The lobster bisque was the best, the most wonderful lobster bisque I have ever had(and trust me, coming from moi the lobster bisque queen, that is saying a lot) I t was so simple, and the visible lobster infused a clear, not salty or spiced with other things broth, as to not take away from that delicate lobster! The BBQ crab, stained my pale hands(for 2 days!) and were the smallest crabs I have ever seen… I was not sure if they were in fact crabs, but they were tasty. The lobster was good(when is it really Bad, anyway?) However, while not being the biggest fan of mussels, they really shined and the broth they were in, which was a slightly spicy tomato broth, I could have had just bowl after bowl of it, if I was allowed. It is messy eating, where juices from shellfish squirt all over(hmmmm…that could be erotic, or smelly, stain-the-clothes-yuck, depends) Their drinks are really strong, we each only had one(the hurricane… and sincerely, no pun intended) and I was glad we had a taxi ride. The staff is cute and warm, you’ll like it. P. S. Maybe to be more polite to the host, I suggest making reservations, even though they hardly seem necessary!

5 words: Late Night Steak & Lobster. One night out in North Beach and instead of the usual 11pm Pizza run, we stopped into House of Seafood and had their Steak & Lobster special($ 20!!!). It was the highlight of my 4 day weekend. This meal was on not on par with what you might get at other fine dining establishments but still good for what it was. What took it over the top was that there was a fun jazz band and people dancing. People just don’t want to leave this place once they get here. Great vibe.

9÷10÷06 Update: Had to demote this one to 4 stars after my visit last night. Went to pick up some food and the bartender screwed up my to go order and I had to wait for him to get a manager and figure out how to fix it in the computer. Then I spent 45 minutes waiting for my food and when I went up to bartender to ask where my order was, he tells me it’s BEEN ready. I said why didn’t you tell me? He said I walked around the bar twice and couldn’t find you! I hate liars… as I was sitting at the bar the whole time. The lady singing last night sounded to lounge-y and held notes for way too long. 4 stars now as I still stand by my other review of the New Orleans All Starz and I also tried the red beans and collard greens last night… pretty tasty… I’ve been to the Condor once… when I first moved to San Francisco and there was absoutely NOTHING going on inside the place. Fast forward 12months and this is now one of my favorite spots in the city. I went there earlier in the week on Fat Tuesdays for dinner and watched the New Orleans All Stars play with front man Curtis Lawson. I knew I was going to be in for a great time when Curtis brought his washboard with him to the stage. I mean who plays the washboard anymore??? Especially on the West Coast? Anyways, he was awesome. I had the New Orleans Sampler($ 16) with file gumbo, red beans and rice, jambalaya, and catfish. I enjoyed the red beans and rice and fried catfish, but the jambalya was a little to wet/mushy for me and the gumbo was ok, but I’m from Texas/Louisiana, so I’m a gumbo snob. I had the beignets($ 4) as well for dessert and they were good. I went to this place again last night as I was entertaining some friends from out of town and we had a glorious fun time. The New Orleans Alls Stars were playing again with guest singer Lisa Kindred, and I’m telling you this woman could sing the blues like no other! We tried the appetizer sampler for two($ 10 per person) which actually had a lot on the plate(crawfish salad, fried catfish, crab bread, shrimp remoulade, grilled andouille sausage, fried shrimp, and something else… i forgot) and that was really tasty… but I was on my 5th Fat Tire by that point, so who knows??? The servers and greeters are all lively and dance with patrons during the songs and did I mention they give people their own tambourines to play while band is on? It was slow on Tuesday night and most of the people in there on Friday night were tourists, but I don’t consider this place a tourist trap at all(this place 12months ago is another story). I hope some more locals find this place and add to the party. If you’re into good music and having a good time, check this place out.

I was surprised how well i liked this place when i went shortly after Katrina for a memorial dose of jazz and wine — so why just 3 stars? …still too touristy to feel really comfortable, but if you’ve already had a few rounds, you might not notice or care at all. Food was decent(mussles were fresh and tasty, not as fast-foody as i feared they might be), the live music good, the service a little off, but not terrible(it’s a bar, after all). Was neat to see the change from Condor Club. Still seemed to be the same owners or something(«Condor» was still on the computerized register screens), but a nice improvement.

My four star review is because of one thing: Their bread pudding. So warm, so complex in flavor with the raisins and the banana with the whiskey sauce and coconut rum. Both of us had bad Fridays and that dessert just brought total wide smiles to both of our faces. It was so comforting and good that we couldn’t find words to describe it. Stick me on a deserted island with bread, whiskey, and coconut rum and the rest of the ingredients along with their recipe and I will be in heaven for the rest of my life. The seafood was fresh done with a true Cajun and Creole kick. For those of you who can’t decide. I suggest their«Taste of New Orleans», it has the gumbo, bronzed catfish, jambalaya and red beans & rice. Great solid choice for friends who never had Cajun or Creole food, the basic starter set. If you are looking for a great appetizer, I recommend the«Double Shrimp Remoulade» — with jumbo fried and boiled shrimp served with baby iceberg wedges and fried green tomatoes all slathered their New Orleans remoulade sauce”…oh my god… so very good. The staff there is awesome. They are fun, attentive and can get into the groove with the band. When we left, every single one them on the way out greeted us a great evening while jiving away with to band. Our waiter was way cool and attentive for a person who started on his second day. I was impressed. And the band? The band tonight was playing all the music that just makes you jive and groove along dinner. Strong drinks, good music, fun atmosphere, food that can fill you up and their Bread Pudding. It sure took us away from the rainy San Francisco to a night of New Orleans in its heyday. Don’t give its location as a mark down. Give it a try and then decide.

Fun and friendly jazz club where most people get up and dance. Great to just drop-in while passing through, plenty of comfortable seating. Most importantly(and something which is a nice suprise for once), the drinks were reasonably priced. Next time I am going to try to seafood.
