Liang’s has been my go-to place for seafood for years, and the only place in the city where I’ve been able to find whole, fresh squid. My primary purchases have been salmon, though. The best steaks and fillets I’ve ever had, with prices up to a few dollars less per pound than the supermarket. Clams are another favorite. The price per pound tends to run at around $ 3.99. I haven’t yet attempted to cook a whole fish, but there’s definitely plenty of that available there, either on ice or swimming in a tank. Live turtles also, if you’re into that. And if you want trimmings and bones for stock, they’ve got that too. Even though they try to close at around 6 p.m., I’ve found the workers to be pretty flexible and accommodating. More than once I’ve rushed in after six when almost everything’s been put away and they’ve pulled what I wanted out of the chiller. Just don’t be dressed too nicely because it’s almost impossible not to get fishiness on you. In other words, this ain’t the fish counter at Whole Foods.
