Alcatraz Island

Visita obligada si vas a San Francisco por primera vez. Es uno de los grandes atractivos turísticos de la ciudad (entre muchos), aunque con una vez que se visite, desde mi punto de vista, más que suficiente.
Hay que ir en barco, el trayecto está incluido en el precio de la entrada a la cárcel. Es recomendable coger el último barco de la tarde (sobre las 15:30 /​16:00) ya que esto te permitirá apreciar el atardecer sobre la bahía, que es impresionante.
Las entradas se pueden coger a través de
aunque hay varias páginas (yo lo cogí a través de esta). El precio suele rondar los 40 $ y si escoges el tour nocturno creo que sube unos 10 $ más.
El paseo por el antiguo penal es impresionante, está muy bien recreado y la audio guía es una de las mejores que he escuchado.

Sehr coole Tour. Schon die Anfahrt mit dem Schiff macht sehr viel Spaß. Tolle Ausblicke auf die Golden Gate Bridge. Wenn man der Insel dann näher kommt, kann man anfangen sich vorzustellen, wie sich die Gefangenen gefühlt haben müssen. Sobald man Fuß an Land setzt, erklärt ein Angestellter die Regeln und gibt ein paar Tipps. Bitte zuhören, es war sehr lustig und hilfreich für die Tour.
Danach kann man auf eigene Faust alles erkunden. Die Insel ist ein Naturschutzgebiet und man sieht viele schöné Pflanzen und brütende Vögel. Wenn man oben angekommen ist, kann man sich kostenlos einen Player holen, auf dem die Tour gespeichert ist. Ein Erzähler darauf führt einen durch die ganze Anlage. Es ist sehr interessant, nach einer Weile fühlt man sich allerdings bedrückt, von allem was man sieht und der Vorstellung, wie die Leute da gelebt haben. Trotzdem eine der besten Attraktionen in und um SF.
Tipps:
Unbedingt warm anziehen, auch im Sommer eine Jacke mitnehmen. Gerade der Wind auf dem Schiff kann eiskalt sein.
Auf jeden Fall im Voraus reservieren. Gerade wenn man am Wochenende fahren muss/​möchte. Wir haben 3 Wochen vorher die Tickets online gebucht. Für die Nachttour muss man teilweise 3 Monate vorher buchen.
Gute Schuhe anziehen, es geht bergauf und man muss viel laufen.

In meinen Augen eine der besten Sehenswürdigkeiten in San Francisco. Selbst wenn man normalerweise nicht viel für Museumsbesuche über hat, ist diese Insel einen Besuch wert. Das sollte Jeder mal gesehen haben.

We had a very nice time dieting the Alcatraz tour. My favorite parts without a doubt were the boat ride to the island and back to the mainland. We headed over at noon on a clear, cool, and sunny day which led to fantastic views of the city, the Bay Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Alcatraz. Many pictures were taken! The facility itself was pretty cool for simply being an old abandoned prison. We decided to not do the audio tour and just check it out and read along the way. The absolute silence due to everyone else doing the audio tour with their headphones made for a bit of a walking dead experience for us as well.
We waited in line for the boat back and made it back in around 3pm. Total trip time about 3 hours. With so much cool stuff in San Fran, I’m glad we stayed as long as we did so we had a chance to fit this in. We did have to book Alcatraz in advance or we would not have been able to do it at all.

I’ve been wanting to visit Alcatraz ever since I read «The Prisoner of Azkaban» and learned that Azkaban, the terrible island prison of the Harry Potter world, had been inspired by Alcatraz.
I took a night cruise here (but I have written a separate review of the cruise itself). I highly recommend doing the night cruise rather than a day cruise, as the sunset and view of the San Francisco skyline over the water at night is stunning!
The tours here are amazing. We had a tour guide that walked us up to the prison (it’s a bit of a hike, so wear the proper shoes) and he was obviously very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the history of the place. Once inside, you are given a free audio tour (not to be missed). Alcatraz is definitely an eerie place, and the audio tour illustrates this perfectly. At one point, you find yourself standing on the very place where prison guards were shot and killed in an escape attempt — with markings still on the floor. There is an old hospital upstairs, with strange looking machines and instruments that almost look like torture devices. Walking through the medical rooms, which are quite dark, you get the unsettling feeling of being in an abandoned, haunted place.
As you wander through the corridors and empty cells, frequently you hear cell doors above you clanging shut, and the clattering of keys — it’s not the audio guide, it’s real cell doors slamming — the employees do this every so often to give you a more realistic idea of the sounds of the prison.
There are some great stories here. My favorite was an attempted escape from a prison cell. I also enjoyed looking at the various books that prisoners kept.
As I said above, if you take the night tour, you’ll get to see a beautiful sunset over the water and the Golden Gate Bridge.
A very interesting place to visit, not to be missed!

O que falar de Alcatraz, a atração número um de SFO junto com a Golden Gate, mas com muito mais conteúdo e história pra contar. Fomos logo no primeiro barco, às 8h45, o que foi uma ótima pedida pois pegamos toda a prisão vazia e tiramos altas fotos. Só tenha em mente que vc precisa comprar com vários dias de antecedência pela internet. Logo depois ficou muito cheio! I thought Alcatraz was so cool! I’ve seen movies and read books about it, so it was pretty amazing seeing it first hand. The boat ride over is really nice as you get some great views of San Francisco and both bridges. The island itself is so well kept. There really is so much history!!!
If you go, make sure you look around for the guides, or make sure you pay attention when they are giving a talk. They just might invite you on a private tour. My mom and I got to go on a tour of the off limits upstairs hospital where Al Capone and the Birdman were kept! The guide also let us experience being locked in solitary confinement for 30 seconds. That was such an incredible experience!!! The room was pitch black. You couldn’t even see your hands in front of your face! I couldn’t imagine spending weeks or months locked up in a cell like that.
I HIGHLY recommend a visit to Alcatraz. Worth every penny!

PRO TIP: Book tickets at least a month in advance or you may have to pay an arm and a leg for tickets.
This is a fantastic historical and tourist attraction in SF. Obviously it is well known AND considered very touristy, however, it definitely still holds a lot of value to locals and much of it’s integrity has been well preserved. It is also considered a National Park (Sorry, I don’t think National Park passes are applicable here).
They offer an audio tour, which is very interesting, that guides you through your time on the island. Pros: stop and start when you’d like! Cons: if you have any questions, you obviously can’t ask your audio guide… maybe one day Siri will be our guide.
There is an offer for an evening/​night guided tour, but the groups seem to be roughly 20 people in size. Essentially, if you are looking for a private tour, I don’t think it exists. Maybe check 3^rd party places like Viator or TripAdvisor for special small groups — but expect higher prices and/​or full-​day half-​day SF tours.
Overall, the boat ride is about 30 minutes, while the audio tour takes around 1.5−2hrs. So be sure to plan for a 3 – 4 hour event if you want to spend some time on the island.
There is a giftshop on the island and sometimes they feature a speaker who either worked the prison or who was an inmate there for a book-​talk/​lecture, check online to see if anything new is happening on the island. There were some restorations/​demo work going on when I went here (Thanksgiving Weekend, 2015). I’d be interested to see what is going to change.
There is no food or drinks allowed on the Island to prevent waste, so eat ahead of time or finish your snacks on the ferry. Alcohol is only served on the return ferry — no body wants a drunken tourist gallivanting around an island prison with children present.
Overall, amazing expreince, I would do this again.

Tickets are available through Alcatraz Cruises. Boats depart every 30 min. Purchase tickets online. They sell out fast. Especially the tours at night because of the «spooky» factor.
I would recommend eating before the ferry ride. The food at the shop and on board is a little pricey. I would also recommend dressing very warm! And bring sunglasses!
I would say we spent about 2 and a half hours on the island.
When you get off the ferry onto Alcatraz, there’s a tour guide waiting there to give you some house keeping rules about the island.
I would recommend first watching the 15 minute video from the discovery channel of the history of Alcatraz when you get off the ferry. It gives you important background information of the islands history.
I would recommend bringing your own headphones to pull into the audio tour. The headphones they give you are dated and uncomfortable to wear. Also remember if you stop and get distracted to press pause on the audio tour. The audio tour was interesting because you will get to hear from ex prisoners, and hear them describe their time on «the rock.»
Also toward the end we got lucky as we were walking through the book store, there was a real ex-​inmate of Alcatraz doing a book signing in the bookstore!

This is a must do in San Fran and a great way to learn about a very interesting piece of American history. Buy your tickets in advance, get the audio tour, and please, leave the kids at home– your 3 year old doesn’t give a crap about this island and they will take away from your experience and those experiences of others.

What kind of a f’d up tour is this? Who doesn’t remember that famous quote from The Rock, the 1996 starring Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, and Ed Harris. Alcatraz Island and San Francisco are synonymous, well, along with Gay men, cable cars, wind, and chocolate from Ghirardelli.
The ride from the island to the pier is approximately 10 – 15 minutes. What I love the most is looking back on the city once you are 5 mins out from Pier 33. It’s especially breathtaking on a clear day.
There is a narrated tour with headphones, I suggest taking them up on it. If you have great hair and don’t want to mess it up (I can relate), volunteers & guides also offer guided programs. I like taking teens on the tour. Up close, they get a real feel of a federal prison cell, and just what it’s like if they keep up their shit. Let’s say, it’s gives you new perspectives.

I took a short ferry ride in calm waters from pier 33 to Alcatraz. The ferry ride gives you spectacular views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge as you make your way to the prison.
When you first step onto the island you are greeted by a guide telling you some information about the island. My suggestion is to bypass this stop and head directly to the audio tour of the prison. Most people on the boat will stop and listen the guide’s speech and you will be with this large group of people throughout the tour of Alcatraz.
The audio tour is a must. Take your time and let the audio tour guide you through the prison. Hear the voices of the guards and inmates that take you back in time.
I was lucky enough to have a real ex-​inmate of Alcatraz doing a book signing in the gift shop. I purchase his book, at a very reasonable price, and had it personally signed by the ex-​inmate.

I finally got to do this tour after all these years. I’m really glad I went. I bought my tickets online and got the first boat out in the morning. Don’t think that it would be less crowded because there was still a lot of folks in line for the boat and the boat was full. We had our tickets printed and ready to go, so you just line up to get onto the boat. Once you get to Alcatraz you are greeted by someone who will welcome you onto the island. You don’t have to stay and listen. You can actually go ahead on in to the island and tour at your own pace. There really isn’t a tour guide that walks and talks with you here. They have videos, reading material and a self guided tour in the cell block. I think that’s where most people want to go when they come to the island. To see where the inmates spent most of their time. When you get to the top of the hill where the cell house is, you are handed a recorded tour of the place with headphones. You can pause, play or stop to go at your own pace. But it tells you where to go, the interesting stories behind it, and it’s all narrated by correctional officers and inmates from Alcatraz.
I found it to be very interesting and just a cool place to visit. Not to mention the views on a clear day. You could see all of the bay and the golden gate bridge.
Our tickets were $ 38 each adult. Not bad for the roundtrip boat ride and access to the island. They had about 3 different gift stores on the island. One of the inmates wrote a book and he was there signing his book in the main bookstore. Lots of Alcatraz memorabilia, books and gifts for sale.

After more than a quarter of a century, I can finally say that I’ve done the local touristy thing and set foot on The Rock… and I’m so glad I did!
The ferry ride is of course necessary, but it is also incredibly fun. The island itself is way bigger than you anticipate, so be sure to wear comfy shoes, pack some sunglasses and sunscreen, and of course because it’s San Francisco: DON’T FORGET YOUR JACKET!
You absolutely have to experience the audio tour, too. I feel like this review isn’t even necessary after so many have already been posted… But I wanted to comment on the fact that some major language translations were not provided, and I hope the park works on making more audio tours available soon. (Basically if you speak any Indian or Middle Eastern languages, you probably will have to stick to the English version of the tour if you’re comfortable with that.)
Oh, and why isn’t there more information provided regarding the Native American occupation? You clearly see the messages that were written on the walls when that all took place… But it seemed like the rangers and guides skimmed over that information for some reason. Oh well. Google it!

This is an amazing tour. If you are in San Francisco, make sure you make reservations to go to Alcatraz. The audio tour is very informative, and it narrates the different events that occurred in the island. I really enjoyed it.

Tuve la oportunidad de visitar este lugar, me encanto la experiencia, para conseguir los boletos los tienes que comprar con anticipacion a veces hasta semanas antes, pues por lo regular no hay para el mismo dia, siempre esta lleno.
Te llevan en un barco hacia la isla unos 15 minutos, puedes tomar fotos padres desde ahi, de la isla, de los puentes, de la ciudad, despues bajas a la carcel y te dan una breve explicacion del lugar, despues pasas a una sala de video para saber mas del lugar y su historia, subes y te dan unos audifonos con una aparatito en el idioma que quieras y te van dando la explicacion de por donde vas caminando y vas disfrutando y caminando por donde te dicen, y es de lo mas intersante puedes tomar buenas fotos y ver la carcel, las celdas, la cocina, las oficinas, los diferentes bloques de celdas, es impresionante pues solo de imaginar lo que se vivio en ese lugar y en ese pedazo de cuarto de estar por dias, años, te has de volver loco, te cuentan historias de las priosioneros que estuvieron ahi y de los escapes que hubieron, hubo 3 personas que se escaparon y de ahi ya no se supo nada de ellos, no se sabe si murieron en esa agua helada o de verdad si cumplieron su objetivo.
El lugar es humedo y frio.
Me gusto que todo esta super bien organizado, una experiencia diferente y vas a tu ritmo pues te puedes regresar cuando quieras pues hay salidas de barco de regreso cada determinado tiempo.
Si estas en San Francisco no dejes de vistar Alcatraz muy recomendable, algo diferente.

Got a chance to visit Alcatraz Island a while back when I was in San Francisco. I personally think it’s a great thing to do for the first time, and the audio tour was very informative and interesting because you can actually hear the stories of people who have been imprisoned there.
The tour guides knew their stuff and kept the crowd entertained. The place has a long history and it’s a great way to spend half of the day. I would have liked more interaction (perhaps being able to see what was inside of the cells), but there were a large amount of tourists, so this wouldn’t have been feasible. I enjoyed the commentary and it really gives you an idea what Alcatraz was like. I would suggest watching the free program at the beginning as well. Great day out and close to Pier 39, so you could plan an entire day just around that!

I left at 8:45 am and I loved it, we were the first. The audio tour is the best thing ever and the whole experience takes you back in time…

Have you seen the movie? I guess it really be any of the movies. The island has a lot of history. Besides it makes a great backdrop.
Well now you can see the island. It is a nice boat ride out to the island. Once there you walk up to the interpretative center then look at the island.
The prison its self is cool. Solitary confinement is interesting with great views. The guide said they left the windows open so prisoners would hear the city life they were missing.

My favorite thing on the island was sitting in the yard on a sunny day. Amazing views of San Francisco. Watching tour groups go past.

Once again, I’ll keep my review short due to the fact that I’m on vacation. Alcatraz is definitely a place that I would recommend visiting for two simple reasons. First of all, it has so much history behind it! From the time it was used by the military during the Civil War, to the time it became a max security federal prison, then to the time when the Indians resided there… so fascinating! The other reason why I highly recommend going is because of the scenic views you get from the boat ride and from the island itself. It’s absolutely beautiful!

I must say that I absolutely love the audio tour because all you had to do was press play. Unlike other national parks where you have numbers to press. This made the tour much easier to follow.

A great time and must visit for the whole family! we are so glad we came today to learn and be able to experience the famous island.

DO THE SUNSET TOUR. Trust me when I say this. I have visited both during the day and in the evening. The Sunset tour allows you to see the most spectacular sunset in the Bay Area.
A short ride from Pier 33 to the Island, you’ll have a chance to snag beautiful pictures from the city as well as the Golden Gate bridge. Do not miss out… You’ll thank me later.
Visiting Alcatraz at night also has its perks. You get to visit sections/​areas that are not open during the day such as the hospital. Also you get a full-​on demo on how the cell doors are opened and closed. The sound is just amazing. Really neat how guards/​officers were able to control these doors.
The program also included talks about history, myths, and inmate stories. Cool stuff!!!

Alcatraz is a must in San Francisco, everybody knows that, so… i will only write some facts:
1. The Ferry is huge, no need to be hysterical on getting 40′ before the time of arriving. 20′ is mooooooore than enough.
2. Do not eat at the Alcatraz Landing Canteen at the pier, no variety, suuuuuper overpriced (water $ 7). The coffee is good, but nothing amazing.
3. There is a less expensive store on board, wait to get on the ferry and enjoy the view having a warm beverage and something to eat.
4. Do not wait on line to use the bathroom at the Alcatraz Landing store, there are bathrooms outside (where the line) and also on the ferry.
5. Plan to be on the Island about 3 hours, more than enough time.
6. From the Market St (union square), take F Line and get down on Pier 33 or Alcatraz. The cost is $ 2.25 per person, no change given so plan the money in advance.
7. Buy the tickets in advance!!!

The number one travel spot that is a must in San Francisco! First things first, buy your tickets online at least a couple weeks in advance! (you will thank me later) Then, arrange how you will arrive here, I would suggest über if you did not use your own vehicle to travel to San Francisco. Next, take or buy a water bottle, it will come in handy once the hiking starts on a nice summer sunny day. Then, just arrive on time for you need to get on a boat ride to go to the island. Once you arrive and start your walk keep those water bottles handy you will need them! Once inside you will be given a set of audio accessories to make the tour more interesting and after the audio device takes it from here! Very interesting to see the cells and how the prisoners lived their lives in this location. After that you will get back on the boat for a safe drive back to shore.

Having lived within a couple hours of San Francisco her entire life, my wife had never been to Alcatraz. She works within the California prison system (not as a guard) and has had a fascination with institutions of history. We picked an awesome weather day to head to the Island.
Transportation to Alcatraz Island and tour tickets are available only through Alcatraz Cruises. Boats depart every 30 minutes during the day. Purchase tickets online for your desired departure time. The island is a national park. The island and tour are operated by the National Parks Service. After disembarking, you’ll gather at the pier area for an orientation of sorts. A little history and a short list of Don’t Do rules.
The tour includes some self guided (via map and placards about the island) as well as an audio tour inside the cell block. A bit of advice, when on the audio tour, remember to «pause» the narration if you decide to dilly-​dally. I get distracted fairly easily (like looking at a bullet hole in the wall) and forget that I’m listening to a narration that requires me to move. Alas, I’m now confused and cannot «rewind» the narration. I did this at least twice.
The last time I was on the island was at the age of (about) 13. The tour was different then and do to aging buildings and prison equipment, some areas are now off limits and they no longer lock you in cells. There are some excellent views of the City.
It was great to see my wife explore and learn the physical history of this federal penetentary and see this historic prison first hand and touch it (visually and physically). So much of it reminded her of her (work) time in Folsom Prison.

I’ve been hesitating to write this review in the fear of not doing the island justice with my words. Going back in time… Once California was acquired by the United States Alcatraz was fortified as a military site to strategically secure and protect the bay. The island was also used as a military prison during the Civil War, housing war prisoners as early as 1861. Once the war was over it was decided a proper jailhouse would be built, and in 1867 a brick jailhouse was constructed. By 1868 Alcatraz was officially designated as a long-​term detention facility for military prisoners. At one time there were more than 450 war prisoners held at Alcatraz. Three years after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake in 1909 the concrete main cellblock was built, and this structure remains the dominating building we see when we look at Alcatraz to this day. In 1933 Alcatraz was deactivated as a military prison and in 1934 became a Federal Prison when the island was acquired by the United States Department of Justice. Alcatraz was meant to house problem prisoners and during its 29 year duration as a Federal prison it held some of the most well-​known American criminals. The penitentiary claims no prisoner ever successfully escaped the island, although 36 prisoners made 14 escape attempts, and 5 of those were declared missing and presumed drowned. You be the judge…

Moving onto my own experience of Alcatraz Island… I’m astonished at what an impact this island had on me. I’ve visited historical sites over time, but none affected me the way Alcatraz did. It’s overwhelming knowing the history the island has seen and the secrets it holds. When I first visited San Francisco in 2013 I didn’t get a chance to visit Alcatraz, so when I planned another trip this summer in 2015 I made sure to get my tickets early as not to miss out again. I was not sure what to expect when I arrived on the island. I took my time and looked around the grounds before I made my way up to the main cellblock. There are many small structures around Alcatraz, and there are plaques dictating what a building was and what it was used for when the prison was in operation. It’s a steep hike getting up to the main cellblock, and they say it’s the equivalent of walking up 13 flights of stairs. I’ll definitely say the main cellblock is the most impressive part of the island along side the light house. They say Alcatraz was the site of the first operational lighthouse on the West Coast. I’m partial to lighthouses so I found the one on the island to be impressive in its own right. Back to the main cellblock… it is intimidating to enter even knowing you can walk out again. Once you do enter you can get a headset which gives you an audio guided tour. I highly recommend doing the tour with the headset! It makes the prison come alive with the voices and sounds you might have heard when the prison was occupied. You can pause and rewind or fast forward so you can take your time in a particular area if you choose to do so. They also have some of the cells open and you can walk in, and the isolation cells are open so you can see what it was like. Very creepy to go inside the isolation cells. I definitely breathed a sigh of relief when I walked out of that cell. Even though you’re walking through the corridors with hundreds of other people it does not matter because it’s your own experience here that you will remember. Another impressive thing on Alcatraz is the birds! Alcatraz actually means Pelican, and although the pelicans no long nest on the island its constantly surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of gulls, cormorants, pelicans, and other types of birds. The level of noise they can make if they all get started at once is quite impressive. I’ll never forget how it felt to be on Alcatraz, and I would absolutely do this tour again. If you have never gone on this tour, weather you’re a native San Francisco resident or a tourist, it’s worth it even just once. I can guarantee you will never forget it nor will you regret it!

I have been to San Francisco many times and Alcatraz Island has always been one those places I wanted to see. The trip to the island is about 15 – 20 minutes and I believe the ship departs every 30 minutes.
One thing to note is that they offer day trips and night trips and my advice would be to make sure to book ahead of time cause they sell out fast.
Once on the island you are given several options for your tour:
— you can explore the island on your own with a free headsets that is narrated by previous wardens and old inmates
— you can pick the guided tour where you are told stories about the inmates, the attempted escapes and the notable residents
— or you can watch a short video that gives you an overall history of the Rock before exploring it on your own.
We decided to pick up the headsets and explore the prison on our own. The narration was very well done and detailed. The stories told by the former inmates were chilling but very interesting. Another thing to note, while on the island you have a fantastic view of the Golden Gate and downtown San Francisco.
I’d recommend this historical tour to anyone who is visiting San Francisco for the first time and want to do something different. Another word of advice. wear layers cause it gets chilly on the Rock and wear comfortable shoes because it involves a lot of walking.

I’ve lived in the Bay Area my entire life and never really came here until yesterday for a good Halloween scare. The boat ride does take a bit longer than I would have imagined, but once you get here you can stay for quite some time.
There is an audio tour which is fantastic and well done and you’ll get your history of the island in a matter of an hour. Take your time and you can pause it at anytime. I’m actually surprised as to how small the prison area really was, as I imagined it was quite larger.
The staff are all very helpful and while it’s said this place is haunted, I wouldn’t put too much faith in that. Still, it’s a very interesting place, and hey, they filmed the Rock here! Or at least part of it.
I would highly suggest giving this place a visit, especially if you live in the Bay Area, as most don’t ever decide to come here.

If you’re a first timer in San Francisco, Alcatraz is a must! It’s obviously a hotbed for tourists, but I felt it was well worth the island tour. How many prisons do you get to visit that are an island of its own, and with so much history to boot?
I’ve been to Alcatraz twice and each time I spent about 3 hours on the island. The cruises leave quite often and the trip thru the bay to the island takes about 15 minutes. Once there, you’re given a quick debrief of the significance of the island and what to do and not to do there. After that, you’re free to roam around and take pictures as you please. Also, be warned, there’s tons of bird poop everywhere outside on the island so be careful of what you touch.
After visitors enter the main entrance to the prison, they’re given audio headsets. You can listen to the audio and follow it thru the prison … or you can be a rebel and not listen to it at all, but I thought the audio was a nice compliment to the tour and very informative of what events took place where. That’s pretty much the gist of the island tour. There were many unique sites inside the prison and tons of great stories told during the audio tour. I have to say it was one of the best tours I actually ever went on and there wasn’t even anyone guiding it!!!

We went here a couple of days ago and learned a lot about this place. I don’t wanna be telling too much here but you learn how it served as a military base, later as a federal prison (penitentiary) and was occupied by Indians after the island was shut down. You hop on the boat at pier 33 and go over to the island. There, you can attend some guided tours and other services.
You definitely should be taking the recommended audio guided tour that take like 30 – 40 minutes approximately. There you learn a lot about the prison and what living was like. There’s also a short 18 minute movie to watch and some others that treat the occupation by the Indians. Unfortunately, many areas of the island are currently closed for renovation but it’s still worth it. However, although you’re kinda getting used to it, 31 $ a person is again expensive. Plus they always try to sell you expensive souvenirs as well. Maybe at least lower the prices on those as more people (including myself) might actually buy stuff in your stores.
Coming back from the island make sure to check into pier 39 to see the sea lions chilling on floating panels ;)

Alcatraz was an amazing interactive tour that leads you along the historic prison facility. There is a comfortable ferry ride over to the island with light food and drink available for purchase on-​board. We arrived at the island in approximately 10 minutes and were immediately welcomed by the staff over loud speaker.
Alcatraz has sooooo much ground to cover you could spend hours here; however if at any time you’ve had enough there are ferry finds departing on a rotating schedule to take you back to the pier.
I opted to stay for the long haul to get my money’s worth. I walked the enormous grounds with my headset and was guided by the voice of an awesome narrator. I highly recommend this tour; it really made me feel one with the place. Super informative and interesting from beginning to end. I was able to take a look inside the morgue, cells, recreation grounds, kitchen, solitary confinement, warden’s housing and many areas where the country’s most infamous offenders were once housed.
Please do not visit San Francisco without experiencing this amazing structure!

Highly recommend Alcatraz tickets are booked in a month advance as this is a hot ticket in town! They were booking for 2 weeks later when we went to get our tickets. We walked from our hotel in Union Square to Pier 33 where we catch the ferry to the island and arrived about 30 minutes before the departure. There are a couple of food vendors, and washrooms before you join the ferry line. They take photos of each group for those interested in paying $ 20 for a photo with the Alcatraz Island behind them.
The cruise is windy and short but nice ride to get out to the island. Once we arrived, there was a guide that was providing information but we bypassed it and walked up towards the entrance and audio tour. There was a short line and they asked what language we wanted our tour in. This is a great service to meet the needs of all the tourists that visit.
This was my second visit to Alcatraz and although the audio tour was as I remembered, it was still an awesome experience. I like the stories by the correctional officers and inmates and reliving the experiences through the details they shared. At one point, we were outside and it was a great view of San Francisco and nice to walk around the grounds.
After we returned our headsets, we browsed the gift shop. They sold tshirts, books, comic books, and almost everything Alcatraz theme. I bought a book about the escape from Alcatraz and I didn’t know the author was signing books. The cashier informed me and the author happened to come to the counter. She personalized my book and we chatted briefly, she was lovely.
In the past, I remember we could walk around the island more to get an awesome view of San Fran but it was closed off now. We made our way to the ferry area about 3 hours from when we arrived and there were fewer people on the trip back than going.
Would definitely recommend for those visiting San Fran!

Probably my one reason in life for ever wanting to come to San Francisco — Alcatraz! And after visiting I do feel kind of guilty for saying that… some bad things went on here! But truth be told, they do some what glamorize this prison and give it catchy names regarding no one ever escaping etc etc. and that on top of all the movies filmed (who doesn’t love Sean Connery in The Rock?), so this may have fueled some sort of obsession with coming here.
We took the 2:10 ferry across ($ 30 and you need to chose your ferry time when you purchase tickets). Also, get these tickets in advance online, they are usually sold out on the day of.
After arrival and off the boat we were given some brief notes on exploring the island we headed off to do our own thing. We originally planned to explore a bit and then head up to the cell block to do the audio tour (included for free) but excitement got the best of us and we were immediately in the cell block. Got our headsets and followed the instructions.
The audio tour must be about an hour + long because we ended up killing some serious time in there, but definitely worth it. Gives you great insight into how the inmates lived as well as two of the most infamous escapes «attempts». Some of the cells are «decorated» to show exactly what the living standards were like and you’ll even get to walk in to a cell, including the solitary confinement cells.
Somehow we ended up downstairs in the gift shop at exactly the time of the «slammer» and missed that in action, so I guess I’ll have to come back! The gift shop itself is pretty complete and I ended up getting two magnets, one of Alcatraz themed and one San Fran themed since I have a magnet collection of my trips.
After that we finally toured the rest of the grounds which are quite beautiful in terms of landscaping in some areas as well as seeing all the natural birds in their glory. Actually it almost made me feel disappointed that this island was used as a prison because it could have been so much more!
Ferries back are every 30 minutes and you’re welcome to grab any time slot you’d like, so really you can spend all day here, or just an hour. We grabbed the 4:45pm back so I’d suggest you allow for 2 and half hours here to explore it all!

Alcatraz, Tour-​Attraktion Nummer 3 (oder so) in SF. Klingt spontan nicht wie meine allererste Wahl bei der Gestaltung meines Sonntags. Wenn da nicht die Empfehlungen der Einheimischen gewesen wären.
Das Organisatorische vorweg: Ja, rechtzeitige Planung hätte theoretisch Sinn gemacht. Aber es geht auch so. Am besten ein paar Tage vorher vor Ort die Tickets kaufen. Sie kosten hier nur 30 Dollar, im Internet ist es deutlich teurer. Teurer ist es auch bei den Leuten, die an den Piers am Straßenrand stehen. Vor allem weil sie dir gleich ein Paket mit Bus– oder Walking Tour andrehen wollen, angeblich die einzige Möglichkeit nach Alcatraz zu kommen. Wenn doch mal jemand «ausnahmsweise» die Alcatraz-​Tickets solo anbietet, dann für 50 Dollar. Was als Einzelperson immer geht: Direkt an die Schlange stellen, da gibt es immer jemanden, der ein Ticket übrig hat.
Rüber kommt man per Schiff, die Überfahrt dauert ungefähr 15 Minuten. Ich empfehle die letzte Tour des Tages, weil dann insgesamt weniger Menschen auf der Insel sind und weil das Licht dann so schön ist. Oder die Nachttour.
Vor Ort bekommt man Kopfhörer mit einer Audio-​Tour. Gesprochen werden die Texte teilweise von ehemaligen Insassen und Wärtern. (Zu der Qualität von Übersetzungen kann ich nichts sagen, ich hatte mich für die Originalversion entschieden.) Die Tour ist super gemacht, weil sie neben der Vermittlung von Informationen auch Geschichten erzählt. Meine Nummer 1 all meiner bisherigen Audio-​Touren. Was sie mit allen anderen Audio-​Touren gemein hat, ist dass man jederzeit auf Stop drücken kann und die Insel oder den Ausblick genießen oder Fotos machen.
Meine Empfehung: Machen!

Wirklich sehenswert und ein Highlight dieser Stadt. Der Ausblick ist besser als von der Golden Gate Bridge und teilweise von den Bergen. Unbedingt eine der ersten Touren in der Frühnehmen, denn da ist die Insel noch ziemlich leer und die Tickets rechtzeitig (gut 2 Wochen vorher) online buchen. Der Audio Guide auf Deutsch ist sehr gut gemacht. Absolute Empfehlung!

Merece la pena, ¡y mucho! Ayer tuve la oportunidad de visitar esta emblemática y famosa ex-​cárcel y fue una mañana de lo más entretenida.
Te subes en un barco que te lleva hasta la isla (el viaje dura unos 15 minutos y puedes hacer fotos bonitas). Una vez allí, lo mejor es ir hasta el lugar donde te dan un aparato y unos cascos para que puedas visitar el recinto con un guía (puedes darle al «stop» cuantas veces quieras, lo que es genial, ya que vas a tu propio ritmo). Esta muy bien montado y las explicaciones me parecieron súper interesantes.
El sitio me impresionó mucho (las celdas, los pasillos…), pero sobretodo me impresionaron las vistas, creo que son las mejores panorámicas que hay de San Francisco (también se ve el Golden Gate, el Bay Bridge…). Ya solo por las vistas merece la pena ir.
Aunque no deja de ser una atracción de lo más turística, me gustó y lo recomiendo a aquellos que visitan San Francisco.

Sensationelles Ausflugsziel. Am besten zum späten Nachmittag, damit man schöné Fotos von der Dämmerung machen kann. Die preisgekrönte Audiotour sollte man sich nicht entgehen lassen. Man kann so lang wie man möchte auf «The Rock» bleiben. Die Preise für Souvenirs sind in Ordnung. Auf jeden Fall mal hin!

Gehört beim San Fran Besuch einfach dazu. Die Audiotour ermöglicht es, dass man sich auf der Insel relativ frei bewegen kann, das war sehr gut, da man sich dann auch mit den Dingen beschäftigen konnte, die einen am meisten interessierten.
Die ganze Story drumherum ist auch sehr interessant und man erhält einen kleinen Einblick in den damaligen Gefängnisalltag. Kuriose Geschichten von Gefangenen gibt’s dazu.

Alcatraz fait bien sûr partie des incontournables d’une visite de San Francisco, et c’est justifié.
Il y a toujours du monde, et la queue pour embarquer est longuette, même avec un billet mentionnant l’heure de passage, qu’il né faut pas oublier de réserver sur
(et nulle part ailleurs, c’est la page officielle de la seule compagnie habilitée à transporter les visiteurs d’Alcatraz) plusieurs jours (voire plusieurs semaines en été) à l’avance pour avoir l’horaire de votre choix. Prix pas donné (30 $ !) mais comprenant le bateau et la visite.
Pendant l’attente avant d’embarquer, on vous oblige quasiment à poser pour la photo débile qu’on vous vendra une fortune à votre retour sur la terre ferme: ignorez les protestations des marchands du temple et zappez en dépassant d’autorité le photographe.
Voilà, le désagréable est passé, on peut maintenant profiter de la visite. :-)
Le trajet en bateau d’une petite quinzaine de minutes est déjà agréable et permet de belles vues sur l’île et sur les deux ponts de la ville.
À l’arrivée, il y a le briefing du garde national (l’île est un parc national donc sous leur garde) pour la sécurité et le règlement (pas trop méchant, les piqué-​niques sont interdits mais on peut quand même boire à sa bouteille d’eau…). On vous propose de prendre un plan de l’île contre une obole d’un dollar (à glisser dans une urne, on vous fait confiance). Puis c’est parti pour la visite, on peut au choix commencer par se balader autour de l’île (le tour est vite fait), s’arrêter à mi-​hauteur pour un petit musée sur l’histoire des prisons et un film sur Alcatraz (la partie la moins intéressante, n’ayez pas trop de regrets si vous n’avez pas le temps de passer par cette étape), ou monter directement tout en haut pour la visite de la prison proprement dite, qui débute par la remise (sans supplément de prix) d’un audio-​guide dans la langue de votre choix.
Mention spéciale pour la qualité remarquable de l’audio-guide, la version française est très soignée avec par exemple des interviews traduites par des comédiens pour coller à l’original.
La visite est passionnante et on né voit pas le temps passer. Le fait que l’affluence soit régulée par la contrainte du bateau fait que le nombre de visiteurs né devient pas gênant, mais je recommande quand même de prendre le premier bateau vers 8h30 du matin pour avoir le plaisir d’être parmi les premiers à rentrer dans le bâtiment et donc l’avoir (presque) pour vous tout seul…

La balade à l’extérieur, s’il fait beau, offre bien sûr de superbes vues sur la ville et ses ponts, comme depuis le bateau.
Conclusion: même si c’est la visite la plus cliché de la ville (à égalité avec le Golden Gate Bridge), vous aurez passé (au moins) une super demi-​journée ! La prochaine fois, j’essaierai le tour en soirée, de nuit l’expérience doit être différente.

Ouais je cote un prison: D, la claaaaasssse ! On s’était posé la question avant d’aller à SF entre potes de savoir si Alcatraz méritait le détour, la réponse est Oui avec un grand O.
Alcatraz, tout le monde en a déjà entendu parler, que ce soit via des reportages, des films ou des livres. C’est un lieu mythique et c’est pas tous les jours qu’on peut approcher ce genre d’endroit.
Les petits américains ont bien fait leur taf en préparant l’île pour les visiteurs. On s’y retrouve facilement et la visite avec l’audio guide est bien foutue. En fait, c’est même obligé de prendre l’audio guide sinon la visite né vaut pas la peine, ça permet de vous plonger dans l’ambiance de la grande époque d’Alcatraz.
2h plus tard et avec qques photos de vous dans votre appareil, vous êtes prêts à reprendre le bâteau pour rejoindre la ville.

sehr interessant, vor allem die Audiotour durch den Knast mit all den Geschichten die dieser Knast schrieb. Selbst die Spuren der Handgranaten sind noch auf dem Boden zu sehen, ebenso wie die selbstgebastelten Köpfe der Flüchtlinge und dekorierte Zellen. Ein Muss wenn man in San Fran ist

Ich fand meinen Tag auf Alcatraz echt super, obwohl es bei mir schon etliche Jahre her ist. Damals war es sehr schwierig Tickets spontan zu bekommen, wir hatten damals Glück das wir am Fishermens Warf von anderen deutschen Touristen angesprochen wurden und deren Tickets kauften, da sie keine Lust oder Zeit hatten. Es war dann ein sehr schöner Tag auf der Insel. Ich war erstaunt, daß das Gefängnis relativ klein und eng ist, im TV kommt es immer so riesig rüber.Auch die einzelnen Zellen sind so klein, da mußte man als Gefangener echt schon Platzangst bekommen.
Nichts desto trotz ist es für jeden San Francisco Besucher absolutes muss, da drüben gewesen zu sein, denn sonst war man nicht da (ist so).Es war ein unvergesslicher Tag.

WOW, sollte man mal gesehen haben.
Auch wenn es schnell nur noch eintrittskarten für den nächsten Tag gibt. So lohnt das warten.
Besonders die Isolationszelle ist beachtlich!

Aufjedenfall ein Must Seen in SF, allerdings war ich etwas enttäuscht, da man absolut nix über die Geschichte der Insel erfährt bevor sie ein Gefängnis darauf gebaut haben.
Noch ein weiteres Manko für mich war, es war einfach zu touristisch, zu amerikanisch-​patriotisch.

Auch Alcatraz sollte man unbedingt besuchen. Hier würde ich aber jedem Raten die Tickets entweder im Internet vorzubestellen/​kaufen oder direkt morgens an den Pier gehen und die Tickets für den Tag kaufen, ansonsten steht man in einer langen langen Warteschlange.
Die Überfahrt zur Insel dauert eine knappe halbe Stunde und ist sehr schön. Auf der Insel selbst kann man eine Audio Tour kaufen oder die Insel/​Gefängnis auf eigene Faust erkunden.
Ein sehr sehr beeindruckendes Erlebnis!

Eins der Highlights in San Francisco…
Nach der 20 Minütigen Überfahrt kommt man also an und begibt sich auf einen kurzen Spaziergang rauf zum eigentlichen Gefängnis. Der Rundgang ist toll gemacht und man kriegt über den Audiguide viele Interessante Infos. Danach kann man noch Teile derInsel auf eigene Faust erkunden, was allerdings nicht lange dauert, dafür hat man aber je nach Wetterlage einen tollen Blick auf San Francisco und auf die Golden Gate Bridge.
Egal wie das Wetter ist, sollte man aber immer einen Pulli mitnehmen, da es auf der Insel und im Gefängnis eher kühl ist.

Genial und auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen, die Tour über die kleine Insel in der Bay. Beim ersten Besuch in SF wollte ich da noch nicht hin, beim zweiten Mal hat man mich überzeugt und das war KEIN Fehler.
Der Besuch war einer der Highlights des Urlaubs und die Audio-​Tour durchs Gefängnis ist echt ein Erlebnis, die nimmt einen total «gefangen».
Einen halben Tag sollte man mindestens einplanen, und wie alle anderen vorher schon sagten: Auf jeden Fall versuchen, mit der ersten Fähre hinzukommen, denn dann ist noch recht wenig los und man kann sich freier bewegen.

O passeio consiste na travessia de barco até a ilha de Alcatraz, aliada ao tour, muito bem organizado, por toda a ilha, com explicações de funcionários. Além disso tem um «audio tour», individual, feito por meio de um player dado a cada visitante.

ca peut etre tres intéressant parfois de faire le touriste de base et d’aller là ou tout le monde va. bien sur ca a ses inconvénients aussi, mais la visite est instructive et impressionnante, on se croirait dans Shawshank Redemption (Les Evadés en français). la traversée en bateau vaut le coup car elle offre une vue inédite sur la ville.

Heute steht das Gefängnis leer, ist aber zur Besichtigung für Gruppen und Einzelpersonen offen und ein absolutes Muss für jeden, der nach San Francisco kommt.
Sie können Alcatraz nur mit einem Schiff der Schifffahrtsgesellschaft Alcatraz Cruises erreichen.
Wenn man die erste Fähre nimmt ist es noch nicht so voll und man hat mehr ruhe zum gucken. Da man so lange bleiben kann wie man will hat sich gegen Mittag der Morgennebel auch verzogen und man hat einen tollen Blick auf San Fran.
Sobald man auf der Insel ist, nimmt einen nicht nur die berühmte Vergangenheit, sondern auch die wirkliche Schönheit hier gefangen.
Sehr gut fand ich den MP3 Player den jeder bekommen hat. Das ist sozusagen eine eigen Führung durch Alcatraz. Man kann sich die Sprache aussuchen und dann nur noch auf Play drücken und es wird einem erzählt wo man hingehen muss und bekommt so die ganze Geschichte, in seiner Muttersparch, über Alcatraz erzählt.

la roca, la carcel mas famosa del mundo, esta un poco descuidada pero mola verla, se puede visitar su interior ahora es un museo.

Una visita ineludible en SF, la sensación de estar en medio del agua sin posibilidad de escapar es única, recomiendo la visita nocturna aumenta la sensibilidad.

Umfangreiche und hilfreiche Infos bieten bereits die anderen Beiträge. Als Tipp möchte ich ergänzen, dass es sich empfiehlt, die erste Fähre am Morgen zu nehmen. Verweilt man sich nicht zu sehr am Steg und auf dem Weg nach oben, kann es passieren, dass man den Zellentrackt für einige Zeit für sich alleine hat, bevor die Massen einströmen. Das ist besonderes Erlebnis in einer eindrucksvollen Stimmung von bedrückenden Stille und abschreckender Leere. Die Audio-​Tour kann man auch später machen, hier gibt es genügend Geräte bzw es werden ständig welche zurückgegeben, sodass man nicht lange warten muss.

Mensch, nach dem ich mir die anderen Beiträge so durchgelesen habe — kann ich kaum was ergänzen.
Einzig, dass man die Guided Tour in Deutsch auch kaufen kann (was ich getan habe). Sie ist wirklich toll gemacht und mutet schon bald wie ein Hörspiel an
Viele Filme habe ich wiedererkannt und war von dem Bauwerk beeindruckt.
Noch ein Tourist-​Spot der mitgenommen werden muss, wenn man in Frizco war :)

Eigentlich hat Rini05 schon alles Wissenswerte erzählt, ich kann da nur meine Erlebnisse beisteuern, alles andere ist schon gesagt.
Nun, wir waren ein paar Tage in San Francisco und das war gut so, denn es ist eine tolle Stadt. Hier will ich wieder hin!
So, nu aber: Parken würde ich außerhalb des Zentrums oder das Auto ganz im Hotel lassen, denn San Francisco verfügt über ein hervorragendes öffentliches Verkehrssystem.
Wir haben zum Beispiel die Station Embbarcadero als Start ausgesucht. eine gute Entscheidung.
Steigt man aus, ist man erst einmal von den Hochhäusern überwältigt und kommt aus dem Staunen kaum raus. .weiter, Alcatraz. Nun steht man nach paar Metern vor dem Ferry Building, also Pier 1.
Wenn man sich nun weiter links hält, entlang ewig langen Reihen von Hafengebäuden in denen immer etwas interessantes passiert, gelangt man nach einiger Zeit den Pier 33. Und nu auch das noch! Ausverkauft. Die nächste Tour, die zu bekommen ist geht erst morgen, 13:10 los… Also brav Karten kaufen und nächsten Tag wieder hin.

Eine ziemlich lange Schlange schlängelt sich am Boarding des Pier 33.
Endlich geht’s nach Alcatraz.
Nach einer kurzen Wartezeit ging es dann auf das Schiff und nun: auf dem Weg nach Alcatraz.

Das war ein ganz schöner Wellenritt, aber hat Spaß gemacht.
Auf der Insel angekommen bildet sich erst einmal eine Menschentraube, die brav «good afternoon» zu Bob, John, Bill oder sonstwen sagt. Hier würde ich ein wenig warten, wenn Ihr die Insel besichtigt. Es ist schöner, wenn man nicht in der Menge mitläuft. Nun geht es weiter auf der Insel, die heute ein Vogelschutzgebiet ist, weiter Richtung Haupttrakt.
Vorbei am Wasserturm und tausenden von krächzenden Möwen. Am Hauptgebäude angelangt, betritt man so ziemlich als erstes den ehemaligen Duschraum, hier werden mp3 Player verteilt, die die Besucher in sämtlichen Sprachen über die Geschichte und die Geschichten des Hochsicherheitsgefängnisses berichten.
Und das nicht schlecht. So wird man durch das gesamte Gefängnis geführt und bekommt alles zu sehen. Und das noch interessant dargeboten.
Da läuft man also durch dieses Gefängnis. Irgendwie bedrückend. Denn es ist kalt, eng, unwirtlich. Aber die Jungs, die hier saßen waren schließlich keine Engel und nicht zum Spaß hier.
Ich war sehr überrascht, wie interessant der Besuch auf der Insel war. Alcatraz wurde erst von Mexico für 5000 $ gekauft, dann eine Festung, Militärgefängnis, Hochsicherheitsgefängnis, dann gab’s nen Aufstand, der sehr blutig niedergeschlagen wurde, einige Ausbrüche (?), die Schließung, die Besetzung durch Indianer und nun ist es ein Vogelschutzgebiet und Touristenmagnet, die Insel hat eine turbulente Geschichte…
Ich würde sagen, das Alcatraz eine Pflichtveranstaltung in San Francisco ist.
Außerdem kann man von hier aus die Stadt und ihre Skyline wunderbar auf sich wirken lassen.
Nur sturmfest sollte man sein, ich als Niedersachse bin es.
Ein toller Ausflug den man gemacht haben sollte, wenn man dort ist. Wers nicht macht ist selber schuld.

Die Fähren nach Alcatraz Island gehen von Pier 33. Dieser befindet sich entlang des Embarcadero und ist eigentlich nicht zu verfehlen. Parken kann man gut in der Nähe des bekannten Pier 39, wo sich u.a. ein Parkhaus befindet. Ansonsten empfiehlt es sich eher, mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln anzureisen, da mehrere Bus– und U-​Bahnlinien fast unmittelbar vor dem Pier halten.
Sehr zu empfehlen ist es, sich vorher online Tickets zu kaufen, da besonders an Wochenenden und Feiertagen die Fähren ausgebucht sind. Wenn man keine Karten hat, kann man sich einfach anstellen. Man sollte jedoch darauf achten, dass auf dem grossen Schild Next Tour available auch noch der heutige Tag steht, denn sonst kann man sich das Anstellen sparen. Es gibt dann zwei Reihen, eine für vorbestellte Tickets und eine normale Reihe.
Die Dame war etwas sehr schnell bei uns, so bekamen wir Tickets für die 11Uhr Fahrt, obwohl wir eigentlich erst später fahren wollten. Die Tickets kosten normal $ 24.95, also etwa 17,50Euro. Hierin ist aber auch die Audiotour enthalten. Schnell ging es dann zum Boarding. Hier soll man sich auch zwanzig Minuten vor Abfahrt anstellen. Wir mussten also etwas anstehen. Dann wurde noch vor einem riesigen Plakat von Alcatraz ein Foto von uns gemacht, welches wir dann nach der Tour kaufen konnten. Da zwei Fotos allerdings $ 22 kosten sollten, haben wir das nicht getan.
Als das Boarding dann begann, ging es zügig voran. Das Schiff ist recht groß und hat drei Etagen. Man kann sich drinnen hinsetzen oder oben auf das Deck. Unten gibt es auch einen kleinen Kiosk, an dem man ein paar Kleinigkeiten zu Essen kaufen kann, sowie Getränke. Die Preise hier sind natürlich teurer als in der Stadt, aber immer noch okay, finde ich. Ein Kaffee kostet z.B. $ 1,60.
Die Überfahrt dauert etwa fünfzehn Minuten. Man hat eine wunderschöné Sicht auf San Francisco, die Golden Gate Bridge und natürlich Alcatraz.
Das Aussteigen hat eine Weile gedauert, da das Schiff voll war. Wir wurden dann gebeten, zunächst uns ein paar generelle Infos anzuhören, was wir aber nicht wirklich getan haben. Es gibt hier auch einen Informationsschalter und einen Souvenirshop.
Am besten folgt man anfangs zunächst den Audio Guide Tour Schildern. Es geht ziemlich steil hinauf zum eigentlichen Gefängnis. Für Gehbehinderte oder ältere Leute gibt es aber auch die Möglichkeit, sich hochfahren zu lassen. Schon beim hochgehen hat man bei schönem Wetter eine wunderbare Sicht auf das Meer.
Man kommt dann in einem Raum an, wo die Insassen gewaschen wurden und ihre Kleidung bekamen. Hier bekamen wir dann die Audiotourgeräte ausgehändigt. Diese gibt es in diversen Sprachen, u.a. auch holländisch, deutsch, spanisch, französisch etc. Ich entschied mich jedoch für die englische Tour, während meine beiden Freunde sich für die deutsche entschieden. Die Dame erklärte uns kurz, wie man die Lautstärke einstellt und wie man die Tour anhält und wieder anfängt. Dies war aber auch wirklich simpel. Es ging dann eine Treppe hinauf und am Starpunkt konnten wir dann die Tour beginnen.
Man sah zunächst den Broadway, also einen Gang, der zwischen den Zellen der Häftlinge vorbeiführt. Die Insassen gaben diesem Gang den Namen. Links und recht gab es nur Zellen und das jeweils auf drei Stockwerken. Die Zellen waren sehr klein, hatten zwei kleine Regalbretter, ein Bett, ein Waschbecken, eine Toilette sowie zwei ausklappbare Platten. Es gab keine richtige Tür, sondern von aussen konnte man alles in der Zelle sehen. Dies war absichtlich, da man auf Alcatraz den Insassen keine Privatsphäre gönnen wollte. Zudem wurden die Zellen irgendwann mit Kopfhöreranschlüssen ausgestattet, so dass die Insassen ab und an Radio hören konnten.
Es war schwierig, dem Audio Guide richtig zu folgen, da nicht nur ich, sondern auch meine beiden Freunde plötzlich in der Dining Hall standen, obwohl wir dort gar nicht hingehen sollten. Wir gönnten uns eine kurze Pause von der Tour und gingen auf den Gefängnishof hinaus. Hier gibt es hinten links eine kleine Tür, durch die man unbedingt gehen sollte! Von hier hat man eine wunderschöné Sicht auf das Meer und die Golden Gate Bridge! Es führt dann eine schmale Treppe hinunter. Hier kann man am Meer entlang gehen und schöné Fotos schicken. Entlang des Weges befinden sich zudem schöné Blumen und andere Pflanzen. Was auch positiv ist: es ist recht leer hier, da nur wenige Besucher hierher finden. Man kann dann bis zu anderen Ende der Insel gehen und kommt dann am Haupteingang des Gefängnisses wieder an. Wir sind dann einfach durch das Gebäude wieder zurück gegangen und haben unsere Tour dort fortgesetzt, wo wir sie unterbrochen hatten.
Weiter ging es im D-​Trakt, wo nur Häftlinge hinkamen, die gegen die Regeln verstoßen hatten. Die Zellen waren grösser und die schönsten im ganzen Gefängnis, aber dafür mussten die Gefangenen hier 24 Stunden bleiben und durften nur einmal die Woche duschen, sowie eine Stunde sich die Füsse vertreten.
