Yesteryear’s Comics

Unquestionably the best comic shop in San Diego. Mike (the owner) who is always there, is exceptional. There are many places in San Diego to purchase comics all The difference at Yesteryear is the owner. Mike is personable and knowledgeable. He clearly values his customers whether they be hardcore collectors or a parent with no comics IQ shopping for a kid. I personally watched Mike help a mother select books for her son who was into that «space movie with the talking tree.» He took the time to understand what she wanted, helped her select books and never tried to direct her to expensive back issues. None of the snark and condescension you get at many other shops. Always a great selection of back issues and new titles including variants. If they are out of it at other shops, check Yesteryear, they probably have it along after other shops sell out. Prices are always fair. I have asked Mike on multiple occasions how he priced a book and he always tells me exactly why. I stop by Yesteryear once a week and look forward to every visit. A great place to buy comics but just as importantly to me also great place to meet and chat with folks with similar interests. There is almost always a lively discussion going on with Mike and/​or his customers about the latest books or movies or any number of other topics. Casual shopper or dedicated collector Yesteryear is the place to buy comics in San Diego.

I have been going to this comic book shop for a few years now and there are plenty of reasons why.
First off, customer service. Mike is such a nice guy. He helped me start a pull list and the whole process was not intimidating at all. If there’s a book you need he’ll do this best to find it for you. Second, his prices are very competitive. Especially compared to other book shops that are down the road.
Third, he has a great selection of books and merchandise ranging from indie books to the Big 2. From Manga to trade paperbacks. From blind boxes to Funko. Trust me, he has a large selection. T-​shirts, toys, poster back issues. I’m surprised he has room for all of this stuff. Fourth, his place is pretty clean and has plenty of shelves. If you like to read indie books like Black Mask Studios or Double Take, he should be able to get you the books!
Lastly, events and the little things. He will have an occasional signing at his shop and will give his customers a heads up of who and when the signing will be. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that he has extended open hours on #NCBD. That’s New Comic Book Day… if you didn’t know, now you know. (Baby, baby!) Plus, to make things interesting he’ll have a Pigskin Pick ‘Ems during the football season and give extra discounts if you choose plenty of winners for that week. What other comic book shop does that?!

Great little store, Michael was helpful and had everything I was looking for. Outstanding pricing structure, had not seen a comic book store take this approach before. Great way to run a business.
As a big Star Wars fan and not an avid comic book reader I often feel comic book stores look down on «the Star Wars fandom», I did not get that feeling at this store.

Alright, it’s been over 3 years since I first reviewed this place. I still come here every week and this place is still the best comic shop in San Diego. I cannot recommend this place highly enough and have no problem telling you that this is where your pull-​list should be.
Mike (the owner) and the customers that come here every week are the reason I keep coming back. Don’t get me wrong, the nice selection and great prices are a huge plus too… but being able to walk into a friendly environment and chat comics with anyone else who happens to be perusing is a big deal to me. I’ve found that this shop is more like a welcoming community of people rather than just a place to buy comics.
Check this place out. You definitely will not regret it!

This is, hands down, the best comic book store in San Diego County!!! Mike cares about his customers and it SHOWS! Whether you’re coming in for the first time or have a pull list on file, Yesteryear Comics will take good care of you. Selection on new comics is second to none. There’s always a discount on new comics and the prices on back issues are more than fair. I have been to comic book stores across Southern California and beyond … but Yesteryear Comics continues to be the best experience of them all! Highly recommended!!!

The owner is very friendly and very helpful… which, oddly enough, is not something you get from a lot of comic shop owners. You’re very likely to catch a fun & lively conversation with other customers. You will have no problem finding current series, he always has plenty in stock. The older selection is «okay». I’ve found some random issues I was missing, but I feel like his main stock is the currents. He does have some really good super old comics at very fair prices. Be sure to peruse the display cases. The only complaint I have is I always leave with less money in my wallet.

This is the best comic book store I’ve been to in San Diego, hands down. I’ve been coming to Yesteryear’s Comics for years now. Mike, the owner, is always friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about comics. Also, Mike’s prices are below actual comic book cover price. As someone who buys comics almost every week, this saves me a lot of money.
I was disappointed when I recently moved pretty far away from Yesteryear and started looking for a new comic book store. I tried other stores for a couple weeks but the service does not meet the standard that this store has led me to expect from a comic book store. The service here is great, the prices are great, and the selection of comics consistently superior, so I will continue to drive from La Mesa back to this store every Wednesday so that I can actually enjoy the experience of buying comics instead of being treated like a wallet on legs, as happened at other places I tried.

My husband and I are avid comic book collecters and we had our worst customer service experience ever at this store. While on vacation, we entered the shop with his parents when my mother-​in-​law picked up a Jim Shore Disney figurine to check the price. It was prominently displayed at the front of the store on a simple shelf. The Dorothy statue fell off and she gasped, stating she picked it up by the base. I saw the owner walk over right away with an annoyed look in his eye, and he picked up the statue saying something along of the lines of ‘you broke it’. I hadn’t even made it past the counter at this point. She reiterated that it was an accident and that the piece just fell apart, but without hesitation he responded «What are we going to do about this?». My husband was in disbelief and proceeded to tell the owner it was an accident, and asked him if a customer would be forced to purchase a comic if they accidentally bent a corner. He immediately became defensive and answered yes.
As a family, we were stunned and stood around for a minute wondering what to do. My mother-​in-​law insisted we pay for the figurine because of the owner’s attitude, feeling we had no other option. My father-​in-​law then offered to pay for the item at the owner’s cost, negating the profit, but the owner started to object by citing how to run a business. He finally obliged after mention of a full-​price reimbursement not holding up in court, and my father-​in-​law forked over $ 40.
My mother-​in-​law spent the rest of the day crying. Funny thing is, my husband would have very likely spent $ 40 on a graded copy of ‘Nailbiter’.

I’m moving. And unfortunately have to get rid of all. This is an awesome place to buy and bring in to sell all used comics. It was prompt and simple.

My hubby is very into comics and we come here I would say weekly. It is a little small, but the service, the cleanliness makes up for that. They have a variety of items ranging of course for comics to manga. From books to graphic novels. They also have a wide variety of Funkos.

Seriously the best comic store I ever been too. The person who was working I don’t know if it was the owner but he was very helpful he knew where everything was at. Everything was organized and had a lot of back issues that’s the one thing my girlfriend and I loved. If I lived in SoCal this place would be my #1 store! Highly recommend!!!

Love this store! Clean, organized (very easy to find things) and great selection of comics. Mike is great owner and gives great advise/​recommendations on comics. Love the conversations that go on in the shop — - I do think that wolverine could still kick batman’s butt though. A++++++++

I stop in here about every other week on my way home from work. Mike is always helpful and remembers exactly what I had on order that he has behind the counter. He’s very helpful giving recommendations as I am relatively new to collecting. I have never paid full price for a book either.

This is the best comic book shop in San Diego, hands down. I love an hour away and drive down to Yesteryear because I know they’ll have what I’m looking for. The shop dude is always super friendly and knowledgeable, helping me find what I need and making suggestions on books and stuff I might like.

The amount of people that come to this comic book store is amazing. The staff is also very inviting and helpful. Will definitely be coming here more often.
UPDATE: Came in a second time about two weeks later, and I’m quite impressed that the guy remembered my boyfriend and remembered that he was on the pull list. A+!

Like all other comic book shops, this place is a little bit pricey. For some of the slightly older back issues, the prices are increased a lot. This isn’t a complete deal breaker though… Why??? Because their new issues, variants with blank covers, and 2 – 3 month old issues are discounted at 10 – 15 percent off which is awesome. Other stores actually charge a ridiculous amount for blank covers and do not give discounts for slightly older issues. Because of this I will keep my rating at 4 stars. I do highly suggest they decrease some of their back issue prices because they are over priced compared to their nearby competitors like Socal Comics and Comickaze.

My favorite comic book store. Mike, the owner, is nice and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this shop.

This is the best comic book store in San Diego! Mike is friendly and honest. He’s always willing to tell you what’s hot or whats worth reading. He may be running around alot but that’s just more proof to show how much he cares about his shop and the comics.
He always has a TON of new comics and variants that are priced better than any other store around, better than ebay usually. He has a huge collection of back issues and a large selection of new issues, variants, and trades. Plus most comics are discounted!
Check out his facebook, he is always updating new, hot inventory, and theres always guests coming in for signings.
I’ve been to many stores around the country and managed and ran a nerd store for 4 years, and this is probably the best comic book store I’ve been to. For him to do it all by himself… Simply amazing! I am in awe!
I’ve been in San Diego for a year, but I am moving soon and very sad to leave such a great store. Thanks for everything Mike!

I usually only buy graphic novels, until I started shopping here. You can usually find full series single issues available. Lots of back issues, but they tend to be kind of pricey. Lots of this big vinyls and he usually has a couple different series if mystery boxes. Anyone who says he is rude is crazy. Super nice guy!

The store was very organized and simple to navigate and they have a great selection. Awesome & knowledgable customer service too!
Highly recommended if you’re in the area, you won’t be disappointed!
