Umi Sushi

Good sushi, Ordered to-​go. No major complaints but I have other sushi places that I like better for the price point. $ 40 for two rolls, edamame, and a hand roll.

Umi Sushi never disappoints! Fresh, tasty, unique! And huge portions. Definitely a favorite place for Sushi in Point Loma.

The service was very poor in my opinion. Our food came out in a hodge podge fashion. Never had a same person bring anything to our table. Had to ask for my hot tea twice and then when I finally got it, it tasted like ass. Had to ask twice to get something else to drink. We were still waiting for appetizers at the end of the meal. They had one larger party that came in after us but they were served and were leaving before we got done. Totally unimpressed with their lackluster sushi. The sesame chicken my son ordered weirdly tasted like peanuts and had no sesame? Not impressed

We decided to try this place out on a random night. It happened to be one of those rare rainy San Diego days, so we were craving some warm noodle soup. Now, even though this is a sushi place, we have heard some good things about their ramen which definitely sounded good on a cold evening.
We arrived to the restaurant just as it opened for dinner and were seated as soon as we walked in. The menu had some pretty delicious sounding food, but after going through the different options, we decided that we were going to stick with our original ramen plan. We ordered the Challenge Ramen and the Shoyu Ramen. The Challenge Ramen is a hot and spicy soup with chicken, assorted seafood, half of a hard boiled egg, and vegetables. We were hoping that this ramen was similar to the Korean spicy ramen challenge as seen on YouTube which appears to be extremely hot/​spicy. It wasn’t. In fact, it wasn’t spicy at all — maybe a bit, but not much. With the bar set so high on spice level, we were a bit deceived by the name of the dish. Aside from not being spicy enough, it was still pretty good. The Shoyu Ramen is a soy sauce based soup, topped with a slice of roasted pork, fish cake, dry seaweed, half of a hard boiled egg, and mushrooms. This was OK as well. Good, but not quite memorable. We aren’t much ramen people, but we can recognize a great ramen from a decent. These were the latter. It’s good in a pinch, but maybe go to an actual restaurant that specializes in ramen if you’re really looking for that particular dish. Unfortunately, we didn’t try the sushi. We probably should have, but that will have to wait for another day…
The staff was really nice and the restaurant was clean. The only thing that may deter us from going back is one of the older guys working the sushi bar. He actually made it quite uncomfortable for us as he kept staring in our direction. At the time that we were there, there were only a handful of customers with none of them seated near us AND there were no TVs around us that he could have been watching. To add to the staring, when one of us (a female) took off our coat, he made an effort to lean in a way as to get a better view. At that point, it was decided that the coat would stay on.
As stated earlier, we’d possibly come back to try the sushi, but we’ll be sure to request a table far away from the sushi bar.

So this place is was not good. Got the noodle dish with beef and it was inedible. The beef was all fat and grizzle.
We then got the spicy tuna which was just okay. I was very disappointed as my fellow Unilocalers gave it 4 stars. I would steer clear. Any place that uses that cheap of beef isn’t using high quality fish.

Our new sushi place! I wanted to come here because of all of the reviews on the lobster roll. Although it was loaded with seafood and pretty good, the roll was way too sweet for my liking and I probably won’t order it again. I have been there twice this week. The fisherman’s roll is probably my favorite so far! The 911 roll and the Big Bang roll is tied for second. I might make it there for a third time this week, we’ll see

Unimpressed with the staff, ramen, gyoza, and vegetarian sushi roll. We didn’t try their sushi, as I was hoping to find a local place for ramen. The 3 of us tried all of the ramen choices and none of them were good. I might be spoiled from living in Japan, but the ramen here was sad. Why bother having it on the menu if it’s not good? The fried gyoza and sauce it came with lacked flavor. The rice on the vegetarian sushi roll was mushy and the roll fell apart. There were no plates on the table to share dishes. My husband wanted some chili oil or hot sauce to make the ramen more interesting and it took a while to get that. Maybe the regular sushi is great, but I wanted to leave a review about the other things on their menu. I won’t be back.

Best sushi in the OB/​point Loma area by far. We got a sushi boat and some simple rolls but everything was beyond expectations. Yooya our chef gave great service and food was amazing. The price is right and the food is right!

We don’t know where to go for dinner, and we ended up here. We tried ramen with mussels and hot & spicy ramen for my man, he likes his food because he was so hungry and I hate mine. The worst ramen I ever tasted. A home cooked style :(however, we enjoyed the umi sushi special and we ended up go home together and with smiles.

I had my birthday dinner party here four years in a row throughout high school. My friends and I were obsessed with this place. I’ve been taking my man here too and he absolutely loves it. He’s very picky about sushi rice and likes umis rice the best! It’s got the right amount of moistness for sure. Fish is always fresh. My favorite rolls are the lobster roll and crazy boy. Never gets old. Love it here! Sit at the bar for a good time with the chefs. They’re super nice and you always get their little cucumber salad for free which is quite delicious. Wish they had a beer sake special though. It does get pricey here so we have saved it for special date nights.

I bring all my friends here for great sushi.
I recommend sitting at the sushi bar, so you can get the service you really want. The table service is usually slow, and they don’t really focus on you as a customer.
But, the sushi is good enough to overlook the bad service!

Great food, clean restaurant, very hospitable. Get the Charger roll, it is delicious. We never pass up an opportunity to eat here when visiting SD.

Pleasant experience all around. Greeted graciously upon entering late in the evening. My greatest fear about ordering takeout from sushi restaurants is that chefs might take the opportunity to dispense with lack luster cuts but all around the color and taste were above expectations.
I recommend their tuna and energy roll

I heard about this place from a friend of mine, so I decided to give it a try. I’m not a HUGE fan of sushi, but if made correctly I wouldn’t mind chowing down on a crunchy roll.
Came a little after 12pm on a very rainy day in San Diego, so keep in mind if people are traveling in the rain to eat some sushi it must be worth it. so the lunch rush hour was headed my way. I found parking right away, but their parking lot was a little small but what can you do?
Came in, was seated right away. The restaurant was clean and tidy. Got my drink, and looked over the lunch menu, I considered the teriyaki chicken plate that came with the entrée, rice, miso soup (that was very appetizing) and a combo of a tempura mix. Which I thought was a pretty good price of 9.99 for the size of the meal. I asked my waitress who was very attentive btw, what good sushi rolls she would recommend. She knew her sushi, but as good as they all looked and sounded I settled for a crunchy roll. Let me tell you, it was probably one of best crunchy rolls I have had EVER. Even though my roll was made incorrectly the first time, the waitress did not hesitate to get another one made, it was possibly my mistake I wasn’t very clear on my order. I also settled for their ramen, as good as the teriyaki chicken sounded on a rainy day ramen sounded a little better. I did a few tweaks and made it a spicy ramen and it actually came out so good I took home what I couldn’t finish, and ate it as soon as I got home. In San Diego it’s hard to find a good place to serve good ramen besides all the ones in Clairemont where that’s practically all they served. Any who, I’m glad I tried this place out where I can get some good sushi and ramen at the same time. Excited to come back and try the rest of the menu out!
SERVICE: You deserve the 5 stars! Again my waitress was very attentive as it got busier during my visit. The rush of people coming in and ordering and being seated, yet I was not once left unnoticed. I believe her name was Rosel! Thank you for the excellent service I will be definantly coming back

Umi Sushi was a pleasant surprise and suits me almost to a T, with unpretentious, friendly and attentive service, a large sushi bar, tables for couples and smaller groups, and rooms for friends and larger groups.
The menu have good selection of sashimi and sushi combinations, and some come beautifully prepared on boats of various sizes, giving air that something special is served.
On the tasting note, our rice was slightly soft, however, it did not detract too much from the overall yummi-​ness of the sushi combination, thanks to the expertness of the sushi construction, and fresh fish cuts that had lovely texture and flavor.
I am glad I finally tried Umi Sushi, and it is my new favorite go-​to sushi joint in town. I will be back.

The restaurant doesn’t look like much, but the reviews for Umi Sushi very quite good. After being there, I’m not sure why though. My Orange Spicy Chicken was luke warm the «spicy» was the salad dressing while I’ve yould just have ordered a Teriyaki Chicken for the chicken part.
Overall not quite a 3 star rating, since I did have better for the same money.

Not knowing what to do for dinner, my husband and I decided to make a to go order via eat24 this past Sunday since this place was close by our hotel. We ordered:
Assorted Salad, $ 14.95 prior to tax– My husband ordered this salad for himself, which came with large slices of ahi tuna, yellow tail, albacore and salmon. My husband liked his salad, including this ginger dressing that was packed on the side (to prevent the salad from being soggy). But he was still hungry afterwards.
Albacore Salad, $ 10.95 prior to tax– I ordered this salad for myself and rather enjoyed it. The large pieces of albacore tasted fresh and the ginger dressing was really good. I thought the portion was perfect for myself for dinner.
Since we had already paid for our item through eat24, we just had to show up and pick up our food. When we arrived (30 minutes after making the order), our food was waiting for us at the cash register. We had chopsticks, 2 packets of soy sauce per to go order and napkins packed in our plastic bags. The employee who gave us our meals was nice.
Umi Sushi, located in beautiful Shelter Island, has it’s own parking lot, but it is rather small and so we had to park around the block, on the street (was free when we came Sunday night around 8 pm).
With our salads tasting fresh, I would want to come dine here in person some time.

I haven’t been here in over 4 years but I had a
gift certificate to use and was back in the old hood. We tried a couple of specialty rolls. The one we really liked was called New York and it had soft shelled crab in it with salmon outside. The Umi Sushi roll was pretty good too. The surprise was the teriyaki chicken lunch special for 9.95 that could practically feed two with the huge amount of perfectly fried tempura veggies, salad, soup, rice and tons of juicy teriyaki chicken.
Will probably buy another certificate on a concert night!

Sushi is always good, most places do a good job of getting it right and I always appreciate when there’s either a protein roll or a cucumber roll on the menu as I don’t care to eat that much rice.
The sushi is good here but the atmosphere is really quiet, I’m okay with an atmosphere like this on a week night but I like a more upbeat place on a weekend night, I’d probably come back here for lunch or maybe even get it for take out.
We had some good food and drinks though. We had a bottle of the sauvignon blanc which was only $ 24, you really can’t beat that. We of course started with edamame and had the baked lobster roll. That was definitely a heavier roll for me, I’m a pretty small eater but I was with a guy so of course he’s going to want that. It was really yummy though, big pieces of lobster and it was baked to perfection. I of course then chose the protein roll and this was beyond fabulous! The presentation alone was fantastic, the sauce was delicious and you could taste every piece of the roll as it wasn’t submerged in rice.
We came here on a Saturday night and it was super quiet, we sat around 8:30pm and a little after 10 the waiter basically told us it was time to leave. At that point I realized we were the only ones in there and all of the bathrooms had been cleaned. So overall they have good food, and like a lot of places in SD even in the Gaslamp you really have to eat early so you don’t feel rushed to eat and pay.
