The Urban Seed: Home and Garden

As of March 2015 the Urban Seed has closed for business in the Fiesta de Reyes.

What a breath of fresh air in the midst of tourist shops! Walking in I felt slightly like Alice in Wonderland, the shop is ethereal and beautiful. Items for sale are fantastic and reasonably priced. The person working here was also very pleasant and helpful. They will be moving to a different location, so the next time I will definitely plan to add this place to my list!

You could possibly wander through this store for ages and still discover new items for sale here. Walking through here evokes a sense of calm and peacefulness as you look through various garden items and plants. Definitely a nice place to shop if you are in the Old Town area.

My mother absolutely fell in love with this little shop. It is so quaint and quiet tucked away in the heart of the historic park in old town. Along with a nice variety of moderately priced plants they had the cutest nick-​nacks it was just a lovely shop to go in and wander around for 5 mins to break up the day and look at some unique little trinkets.

Such a beautiful serene oasis tucked away in touristy Old Town. The woven vines and artistic touch transport you to another place. They use to be on Adams many moons ago and destination spot for many locals and a fixture for the community. Still worth a visit. Nothing here is for the tourist trade. Home and Garden Mecca for your sanctuary. Unique plants and gifts. Glad we rediscovered them again. The owners were always warm and welcoming. Worth a visit after you finish a icy Margarita

The most unique store you will find in SD! A hidden gem tucked away in a tourist mecca. When you step into the serene garden, your senses will be overwhelmed with all there is to see, smell, and taste. Yes! The time my husband and I visited this shop the owners offered us Champagne! What a fabulous couple!
You MUST stop here when you’re in the area! Great gifts for friends and for yourself, you won’t be able to resist!

I went to the store this afternoon with my mom who is suffering from breast cancer. We are visiting from out of state. She stepped into the back and began taking pictures. The very rude sales lady snapped at her and when my mother apologized she was treated very rudely. I had been looking at one of the large buddha statues and was about to make a purchase but was very out off at the rudeness of the woman. The area is a tourist area which makes money from tourists around who visit. I have never experienced such rudeness in my travels everywhere especially to my sick mother who loves gardening. I do not recommend this place to anyone and even in the Christmas season I hope this place is cursed with horrible business this year. This experience completely soured my feelings of this place and coming from the south this lady could learn manners, I also found it offensive that she appeared racist as she treated white customers fine but being Asian she was extremely rude, I suggest Asians to stay away from here.

I love this store! It is fun and eclectic with so many objects to delight all your senses. Don’t be disheartened by the other stores in this tourist dominated part of town. Bypass them and head back to the far northwest corner of the Old Town Historic Park to find this delightful shop.

Tucked away amidst the touristy shops of Old Town is a feast for the eyes known as The Urban Seed. It’s not a very large store but there’s so many things to admire and be inspired by, that a few rounds are necessary to take it all in.
Sadly the store has «no photos» signs throughout the place, because it truly is beautiful. There’s an array of plants, vases, books, and other home décor items that you may not find in other places. I was in the area for a work-​related conference but fell in love with a few items but feared they wouldn’t last on the plane. Their business card has a web site address, however it seems to be no longer working which is sad because I would love to order items to be shipped.
If you’re in Old Town and love an eclectic view of urban greenery, definitely make this one of your shopping stops.

This store IS a hidden gem among the other more touristy shops in Old Town! LOVE it! It is my favorite home store in San Diego by far! I could easily spend an hour in here browsing and looking at all the great merchandise ~ plants, decorative items, stationery, candles, you name it! This is where I will do my holiday shopping for sure! I hope they ship!

This is a wonderful jewel in Old Town San Diego and each time I’ve visited, I’ve never been disappointed. The shop sells an eclectic mix of unique and beautiful treasures from all over, South America, Africa, Italy and more. Also a great selection of live plants and exotic florals to buy for yourself or as a gift. My teen daughters LOVE to come here because they find jewelry and trinkets that you won’t find anywhere else.
The owner, Maurice is a doll. She is warm and genuine, I’ve never encountered her without her beautiful smile. If you visit Old Town, take a look here and you won’t be disappointed. Or if you just need a unique gift, visit The Urban Seed.

This is a great store! Whenever possible I take my out of town guests here, and always get great feedback about it being one of the best shops they’ve been to in San Diego!!! For some reason Google maps and Unilocal show it as closed, which it is NOT. I think the confusion arises from the fact that they closed their location on Adams Ave a couple years ago, when they opened their store in Old Town, across from Fiesta de Reyes.
I highly recommend the Urban Seed for great gifts, including plants, heirloom seeds, and great books too! The owners, Maurice & Michael and staff are also exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable about antiques and architectural landscape design suggestions and solutions.
This cozy store has to be seen to be believed!

Really cute botiquey stuff for your home (mainly) and garden. They carry a more unique selection than anthropologie but their items are equally pricey. Found some adorable decorations but would not shop here often due to the exorbitant prices.

Love, Love, Love this place. It is so cute and quaint with beautiful accessories for your home. It is so serene to walk through and see the beautiful plants and displays. The owners are awesome!!! Maurice helped me pick out special pieces for my home that I love to look at and always get compliments on. I have sent many of my friends there and they too have found special items for their homes as well. I love the location in Old Town, always fun to walk around and grab some lunch at the near by restaurants. You must check this place out you will not be dissapointed.

This is one of my favorite places to shop for gifts in San Diego.
I typically stay away from Old Town for anything related to shopping — but this is a neat gem in the midst of the tourist shops.

I just got back from vacation (Mexico) and forgot to purchase a gift for a friend. Since I was having lunch with my family at Casa de Reyes, I decided to purchase a gift from the urban seed. I must have wore my «I’m a poor uneducated non white person» shirt, because two employees, maybe the owners, didn’t even attempt to help us and to make matters worse, they followed us around the store giving us stink eye like we were trying to steal something. What a HUGE BUMMER! I’m not from San Diego but I am in SD often for business. I have never experienced racism in San Diego. I would never spend my money in an establishment that condones this type of behavior. I hope others will not as well.

I will say it is the best store in San Diego. The location is wonderful. Merchandise is unique, amazing, something for everyone, worldly. Displays are dreamy and this is the place where you spend some time meandering, discovering — the way retail /​boutiques are meant to be… an escape so that you can find the perfect gift for anyone. As a designer myself, I’m wondering, why didn’t I think of this? It’s gorgeous all the time!
The owner’s eye is very special and I can’t wait to go there again.
