Specialties

Vacation care for your cats and birds while you are away. Cats stay in a thier own private cage free room and birds get to spend most of the day on their own stand to forage, play and vocally interact with the other birds.

We have also added webcams to the bird and cat rooms. Cat owners can log on 24⁄7 to check on their kitties. Webcams have night visoion and pan/​tilt modes.

We also have developed our own certified organic cage seed mix, free of soy, salt, preservatives, additives and sugar, several varieties of fresh baked birdie breads, cooked mixes and our own line of hand-​made parrot and cat toys. Our emphasis on our products is to keep it simple and safe. We use human-​grade natural products with most raw materials coming from local resources or the USA.

We also cut and color our own wood for parrots toys and have a large toy making section.

History

Established in 2008.

The Purring Parrot opened in Sept 2008, to fill the much needed niche for upscale cat and bird vacation care. Each cat family has their own room, not a cage, to have room to stretch, play, and enjoy watching the bird guests through one way windows. Bird enjoy loads of out of cage time, fresh fruits, veggies, bath time, afternoon snack and a bedtime mush of sweet potato and bananas. All guests enjoys playtime, reverse osmosis water and loads of personal attention.

We also have a large selection of toys, cat scratchers, a bird toy making section and loads of bird-​safe toys.

Business Owner

We decided to open our business because we saw that dog places have greatly enhanced boarding care but cats and birds have been left behind and we wanted to change that. We try very hard to customize care as much as possible.

Patrick has the creative background and Maria has 8 years of veterinary technician experience. We make sure to spend one on one time with every guest every day to ensure that we make a connection which helps all our guests settle in so everyone has peace of mind. Maria and Patrick are always listening and learning a great deal from their guests and their human companions.

We have a few human employees and 5 bird employees that do a wonderful job of keeping our kitty guests entertained. Our guests have a great time and come back often. We are not a traditional boarding resort so come by and check us out.

This is the place to board your cats! Not only does every suite have a camera that allows you to check on your «kids» 24 hours a day, but the staff is extremely helpful. We had to leave San Diego due to work, but there was a gap between when the pet transport company could pick up our cats and when we had to move out of our house. The owners totally worked with us and our situation and that made the move so much better.

I recently left my cat, Roscoe, here for 3 weeks while I went out of the country. I was really nervous looking for a place to board him because this was my first time boarding him rather than just having someone check in on him at home. Every place I looked at seemed to have a setup where they leave your cat in a cage all day :(Then I discovered The Purring Parrot.
This is the only place in San Diego I could find that had rooms rather than some sort of cage for boarding cats. Not only do they have rooms, they have THEMED rooms. Roscoe stayed in «England» for part of his stay and «The French Café» for the other part. When I dropped him off the check in process went very smoothly, and the facility was clean, secure, and the room was full of toys, beds, scratching areas, and all other cat necessities.
For the exceptionally cat crazy– you can look at your cat via webcam (also has night vision and you can move the camera around the room from your device). The employees at purring parrot sent me periodic emails in the first person from Roscoe updating me on his activities, and upon checkout gave me a very thorough daily log. The log included info on his play times, food consumption, even the consistency of his poop. Seriously. These guys are thorough.
Given that food, litter, and a staff of employees dedicated to making sure Roscoe was happy and healthy were all included, the pricing here is super reasonable. Thank you purring parrot staff for taking care of the fur child while I was gone!

The world is a much better place with people like these in it. They truly care about the animals you leave in their care. This is a business about providing the best service possible without trying to take advantage of pet owners. I was able to watch my cat over webcam while away and they even sent me an email from her perspective! Haha it was glorious. I’m a customer for life. Thank you so much!

This place started out as a good place to board your bird but lately due to the rave reviews online the place is getting too crowded with the birds with no more space left anywhere. The place is so crowded that the customer service has gone downhill and the owner doesn’t have time to talk to customers on the phone when you have some concerns to talk to her about. She would say she doesn’t have time right now and she is in a hurry to do something else. This is not a good way of doing business after you have been successful. So they are not paying attention to the customer as they have used to. They don’t seem to have enough staff to take care of all the birds. The staff do not pay attention to customers request on behalf of the bird but they simply do whatever they want to do to get the job done. Maria doesn’t listen well. I will not recommend this place. They should learn to manage their business better as they get bigger. Right now they are failing.

I love this place for my two cats. The facility is beautifully laid out with all attention on the cat’s comfort. They have a webcam in each of the suites so you can check in on your babies. They also take great care of your babies while there. I love the attention to detail, the daily journal, and I think my two babies really enjoy their stay. I highly recommend this place to anyone that needs to put up their kitties.

They’re awesome! I had to go on vacation for a week and didn’t want to subject my cat to lonely days hoping that the person I asked to come by would actually come by and not only freshen his food and water but also spend a more than a minute letting him. I searched round alot of of places that board cats and found this one to be superior before I even set foot in the location. 1. The rooms are far bigger than most boarding facilities. Not that my cat exercise much, but he could jump up, stretch, and be far from litter box. 2. Webcams are installed in each room. I’m not looking to be on vacation watching my cat, but I found it peaceful to take a peek at him every couple days when I checked my email. 3. Structure of the building. How genius to house birds safely behind a one way mirror and allowing the cats to watch them from behind there glass door enclosure. When I logged in to check on my cat, he was often sitting on a perch outside the door looking out. I’m assuming he was watching the birds. AND lastly and most important, the staff. I scheduled the appointment, they sent me a set of forms ahead of time to complete. That was very convenient. They send an email half way through just to check in let mw know how he was doing. Then, when I logged in, I got to see one of the staff members interact with my cat and he was LOVING IT getting a combing/​rub down. She also played with him and his toys. You could just tell that she cared about taking care of my pet and not just spending an allotted time in room. This the place to take your pet for true piece of mind and care.

Very satisfied with my experience! My two cats stayed here for 4 nights. I was really impressed with the kindness and care this place offered. The ability to check on my cats with the webcam was so comforting! I loved that they kept a daily diary and emailed me in the middle of my cats’ stay with an update. I get anxious leaving my cats with strangers and not being able to care for them, but the Purring Parrot took such amazing care of them. They understand that every pet has different needs, and they accommodate for everyone. My husband and I got a discount for it being our first time with the Purring Parrot, which was much appreciated!

It is tough having multiple animals (two dogs, two cats, and an Amazon parrot), so, first off, finding a place where we can drop off three out of five is great, in and of itself. Then, to have such a great experience as well is just the proverbial frosting.
Look, cats are cats and ours would definitely prefer staying at home. But when they do have to go to Purring Parrot they settle right in. Whenever I check on the webcam they are napping or exploring. I know my pets and could tell if they were upset or distraught in any way. Nope, they just look out the window or watch the fish or do whatever it is they would do at home.
My bird LOVES going to Purring Parrot. I was boarding her at a vet where she was basically stuck in a broom closet with no one to talk to. That was really what prompted me to seek out a new place. She likes it there so much that this morning I dropped her off for a couple of days just to give her some excitement and the feeling of being in a flock. She started calling and doing her phone ring imitation as soon as we were up the stairs.
Anyway, so happy PP is around. The only drawback is the location – parking is tight and if you don’t find a place out front you might have to park a ways away. That’s okay. It’s worth it for the care they provide.

Every time I leave town for an extended amount of time I always bring my little guy to The Purring Parrot. I get updated via emails while I’m away. There’s also a online camera you can log into to check up on your little furry friend! It can be a bit pricey but for everything they do for your kitty (or kitties!) I think it’s completely worth it.
They even have extra services like nail trimming and special treats for an added extra fee. I’ve had my cat’s nails trimmed by Maria (the owner) and she did an amazing job since he never lets me cut his claws without a fight.

Just picked up my kitty Megumi from The Purring Parrot after a two week stay. Let me just this place is absolutely wonderful and will give you so much peace of mind if you board your pet there. The ability to check on your pet with the webcams will make you feel so much better about going away, plus they send you periodic emails about how your pet is doing. They also keep diaries about your pet’s daily doings, health and mood. The room that my kitty had was stocked with plenty of toys, and perches and was plenty spacious for her. It was kept scrupulously clean for her entire stay and I often saw the lovely TPP staff playing with/​cuddling/​brushing my kitty on the webcam. I appreciate their efforts so much and will definitely be returning. I wish I could give this place 500 stars.

We were a bit nervous about bringing our indoor/​outdoor kitty to lodge for 18 days while we were on vacation. We weren’t sure how she’d adapt to the confines of the suite and not being able to get fresh air outside. We are SO HAPPY to have found the Purring Parrot! We booked Blondie’s suite several months ahead of time, based on the fantastic reviews. From the beginning, the staff was very helpful and answered all of our questions. They are truly fantastic and made the drop off easy — we had plenty of time to be with her in the suite and for her to get settled before we left. It was really great to be able to check her progress on the webcam and to see her get more and more comfortable in her new pad. It was also nice to get the email updates every three days to see how she was doing. It was also really nice to get a thorough diary of her stay to know how she ate, her behavior, her play time, etc. She was thoroughly cared for and pampered by the fantastic staff of PP. Blondie sends her heartfelt thanks to Maria, Alexandra, Ally, Dominique, Megan [insert paw print here] for making PP her home away from home for almost three weeks.
A++++ Recommended and we will happily use PP again.

We first found this place because we needed a place to watch our fur balls; the 20% discount for first time customers clinched the deal. Our fur balls have a very special diet, because they are very special fur balls. Enter the Purring Parrot’s crack team. Maria et all are very patient, despite the neurotic quirks of said fur ball’s pet parents.
P2’s staffs’ patience and accommodating personalities extends to the pet parents as well. Even though I’ve employed their services for at least three different occasions — ranging from a quick weekend getaway, to a full 7 day getaway, they ALWAYS are patient, despite the fur balls’ quirky diets/​needs.
My fur balls are in an air conditioned environment, with their own water FOUNTAIN; we have the option to use our own litter — after lugging the fur balls’ food, food dishes, meds and them, I finally gave in and used P2’s litter. And guess what?! The fur balls didn’t mind it at all. I still bring in my own Feliway plug and liquid calmness, for my own peace of mind.
When I pick up the fur balls, they are always delightfully cool — which means they are always in air conditioned comfort, and I have no concerns about fleas. All cats are checked over for fleas. Since my fur balls are strictly indoor cats, its a non issue.
All I can say is: THANK GOD FOR THE PURRING PARROT!!! Thank you, Maria and staff for your patience, and for taking excellent care of the cats in your charge. I can sleep better when away from my fur babies, because I can watch them via the web cam. Worth every penny!

Amazing Pet Hotel!
We’ve let our cat stay here multiple times and he actually comes back a lot better than when we let him our parents’ cat-​sit him. His coat is all shiny and he doesn’t seem stressed at all!
Other than the amazing, clean rooms, you can tell they take care of each of their tenants very well. They also have a 24-​hour camera connected to the rooms so you can see your cat online!
But I think the best thing about the Purring Parrot are the journals they keep for the pet. They let you know exactly how he/​she is doing everyday and they even check the stool for any problems or anything to be alarmed about.
The staff is also very friendly and very welcoming. You can see that they really care about the animals and they do their best to accommodate your pet’s needs.
Definitely, DEFINITELY recommend the Purring Parrot.

Omg I thought I already reviewed this wonderful place! Our first experience with the purring parrot was when we needed to find boarding for our Sphynx (cat) during our honeymoon. There aren’t too many places in San Diego that board cats and after searching forever, I found this gem. It’s a 45 min drive from our house but it’s totally worth it!
My cat being a special breed, I’m very selective on the accommodations and care that will be provided. I want my cat to be as comfortable and happy as possible. Purring Parrot provided all that and more! Staff is always nearby to check on your pets and you are able to bring your own toys, food and litter box, but they can also provide it for you for no extra charge. I love that play time is standard with stay and the staff are so sweet. The rooms are large and provide plenty of space for your cat to explore and play. The best part about purring parrot is the have webcams! I love that u can check on your pet anytime. its a much relief when your gone for a week. They also give report cards on how you pet behaved… so cute :)
There prices are also unbeatable. we have added to cat family since our last visit and look forward to booking on of their larger rooms for our 3 cats!

This place is truly amazing! They took excellence care of our cat Mochi! We checked in on her daily via their web camera which gave us peace of mind that Mochi was enjoying her time exploring her suite. She even had a cat diary where we found out what she had been up to while we were out of town! Of course, I think she probably spent most of her time looking through the glass door that every suite has looking at the birds in the middle!
We will definitely board our cat there again!

This place is a spa for cats and parrots. If I was a cat, I would have no problem staying there. There suites have plenty of shelves to move about and stay high. The place is VERY CLEAN, NO FOUL ODORS. The staff works nearby and can easily monitor activity — not like some places where the cats are sectioned off in a wing. The staff offers bowl of water or a drinking fountain. There is a pet cam to monitor via the internet. The glass door and parrots offer plenty of distractions. If it had an internet connection and a TV, I would probably stay there.
Staff is friendly and helpful. Price is very reasonable. It’s not easy to get a reservation, because they are in demand, which I’m fine with. We generally prefer cat sitters, because we are wary of the problems of hygiene and comfort that pet lodges usually have. Purring Parrot turns the equation around with their superior facility and service. Highly recommended.

I have never actually physically been to this facility, but I have boarded my cats here twice (I travel a lot and my roommate took them there, once due to a fumigation and last week so they could get picked up for a flight by a pet transport company). Even though I’ve never been here it’s obvious that the staff cares for the cats. I love being able to check in on them via webcam and I love the little emails I get from them. I wish I wasn’t moving away because this was really the only place I ever trusted to board my cats!
(like most other reviewers mention, it kind of feels like your own home is inferior after all the attention the kitties get here!)

When I dropped my cats off, I jokingly asked the girl who helped me «…Can I stay here?» I’m pretty sure they get that A LOT.
My oldest cat is almost 10 years old, and I have somehow managed to never have to board any of my cats until now. So I was understandably a bit nervous. I tentatively emailed The Purring Parrot asking for availability and pricing, and they got back to me right away (and mentioned discount for first time customers). After receiving their email I called back to discuss plans further. The woman (I feel badly, I don’t recall her name) I spoke with was very friendly, efficient, and professional.
I just told them which days I was picking up/​dropping off. You do not have to set a specific time. Which means they didn’t know when I’d be popping by and didn’t do a last minute clean up to make things nice for the customer. Nevertheless, the place was perfectly clean when I came in to drop off my cats for their stay.
I was thrilled to leave my cats somewhere they would get to stay in a ROOM, not a cage. Not to mention that my 3 cats got to stay together.
The emails «from» your cats while you’re away are really kitschy, but cute and I’m sure some people eat that up. Being able to log onto the webcams and visually check on the cats is also a nice touch (plus you can adjust the camera yourself to look through the whole room).
Dropping off and picking up my cats were both simple procedures. Both times I stopped by I was impressed by how clean the whole place, and how friendly and efficient the staff were.
Obviously the costs add up, but they are only minimally more than Petsmart/​Petco and the like, for significantly better care.
I plan to use Purring Parrot again for future boarding needs, and will happily recommend them.

I had left my wonderful kids here while I was on vacation. Xuxa and Puto are my life and I’m the crazy cat lady so… I was amazed that I could see them on camera on the regular, this option kept my anxiety at bay. They got brushed, feed, massaged, and loved on. I checked on them frequently since I’m overly protective. Puto takes amazing photos, and Xuxa was just chilling watching the birds In the Royal Suite! The only thing they could add is a cat toy to the camera so when you move it you get your cats attention.

I wasn’t about to board my cat of 12 years anywhere-he’s like my son. So after reading reviews I opted for The Purring Parrot.
So glad I did-​after reviewing the facility and talking with the staff I felt assured he’d be in good hands. Not only are their fees very reasonable, they have webcams in each suite so you can watch your feline from home. Snowball had the ‘royal’ suite which is not only ridiculously funny but awesome (it included a mini king size bed).
Upon picking him up I received a report card of the night and morning he spent.
The staff is knowledgable and friendly.
Definitely coming back!
